A Comparison of Variance in Coverage of President Reagan by "Newsweek", "Time" and "U.S. News & World Report" During Two Time Periods

Knight, Kathryn M. (Kathryn McKenzie) 12 1900 (has links)
Data obtained through content analysis of articles about or concerning President Reagan in Newsweek, Time and U.S. News & World Report during two time periods indicated that no relationship existed between time and variance of news coverage given to Reagan. Three content analysis measures were used: comparison of favorable and unfavorable statements, amount of coverage and number of quoted words. The study is composed of four chapters: Chapter I introduces the study, Chapter II presents the data, Chapter III evaluates the data and Chapter IV summarizes and makes recommendations.

"Gummikulor mot demonstranter i Hongkong" : En kvalitativ textanalys om hur demonstrationerna i Hongkong 2019 gestaltades i två svenska morgontidningar. / "Rubber bullets against protesters in Hong Kong" : A qualitive textual analysis of how the protests in Hong Kong 2019 were framed in two Swedish newspapers.

Mäki, Isella, Lehtonen, Karin January 2021 (has links)
Earlier research shows that news media use violence and conflict to frame demonstrations. A protests news coverage is often negative and portrayed in such a way that impedes the background and message of a demonstration. Demonstrations usually seek media attention to spread their message to a bigger audience. What the media choose to present can have a big impact on how a demonstration is perceived and the outcome of it. Negative news coverage can make a demonstration appear unnecessary and can lead to a loss of power and status in the society.    The purpose of this study is to examine how the protests in Hong Kong 2019 were framed in Swedish news media and if the news coverage follows the protest paradigm. The framing theory, the protest paradigm and news value theory are the theories applied in this study. The method used was a qualitative textual analysis and one article from Dagens Nyheter and one article from Göteborgs-Posten were analyzed.    The results in our study show that the articles, in some way, correlate with the protest paradigm. Violence and conflict occur frequently in both Dagens Nyheter and Göteborgs-Posten’s news coverage of the protests in Hongkong, especially in the beginning of the articles. However, the results also go against the protest paradigm in multiple ways. The newspapers do write about the protesters purpose, goals and background, as well as the police violence.

Problémy životního prostředí v českém denním tisku: Zpravodajské pokrytí vodních zdrojů / The Environmental Issues in the Czech Daily Press: News Coverage of Water Issues

Hanušová, Anna January 2020 (has links)
This diploma thesis investigates the evolution of news coverage of water-related issues in the Czech daily press from 2014 to 2019. Its theoretical part describes the relationship between mass media and the environment. The characteristics of environmental news are explained more in detail and in the context of environmental topics' features, journalistic routines, news normative demands and economic pressure in the media industry. The topic of the thesis is linked to the media theories about news values, gatekeeping, agenda-setting and framing as well. There is also a review of the studies examining news coverage of the environment and a brief description of the water management situation in the Czech Republic. The methodical part introduces the research goal and previous studies which were used as a base for the method in this paper. The results of the content analysis enabled to describe the news about water issues quantitatively and to explain its features and development according to the theoretical framework and previous findings. This thesis concluded that Czech dailies do not treat the topic of water issues as very important, they are event-oriented, dependent on the official sources and focused on risk-related topics. This can limit public awareness of the problem with decreasing water...

Televizní zpravodajství o koronavirové epidemii 2020 jako možný svět / Broadcast coverage of the coronavirus epidemic 2020 as a possible world

Bergerová, Michaela January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis explores the theory of possible worlds and its relation to broadcast during the coronavirus pandemic. It perceives news, especially broadcast, as a possible world. Using narrative analysis, this thesis describes the characteristics of two possible worlds that arose during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic on Czech Television and television Prima. The main goal of this research is to examine what kind of possible worlds have these two TV stations constructed in their main news programs and to point out how these two possible worlds differed. Ekonomická krize: mediální obraz a veřejné mínění / Economic Crisis: Media Representation and Public Opinion

Picková, Martina January 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the current global recession, its presentation in the media, and the public opinion on the economic situation in the Czech Republic. It is based on the theory of agenda-setting. Content analysis is used to examinate the intensity of attention of two different journals paid to the subject of the recession in the observed period September 2007 - December 2011, with a special focus on December 2008. The objects of the current study are two Czech nation-wide journals: the economic newspaper Hospodářské noviny and the tabloid newspaper Blesk. The study shows that the economic journal presents the recession more intensively, from a more general point of view, and questions the causes of the recession. The tabloid concentrates on the Czech Republic, writes about the recession primarily in the context of non-economical news (especially sport), and does not use the mechanisms typical for tabloids as much as expected. A secondary analysis of the outcomes of public opinion surveys examines the readerships of these journals separately. The economic expectations of the readers of the economic journal correspond with the intensity of attention paid by this journal to the recession, but only in the first half of the analysed period. The expectations of the tabloid readers correspond with...

The studied period understands that the line that stars at Jânio Quadros resignation on august 25, 1961 to the Coup with the consequent deposition of his vice president, João Goulart, in april 1st, 1964, and have as research source the editions of the newspaper above mentioned and some opinion polls find in the Edgard Leuenroth Archive. Throughout the research, indications were found in the newspaper that corroborates to the hypothesis that “O Estado de São Paulo” selects its public by the kind of language and the graphic structure of the published pages, despite don’t considering almost ever the public opinion in its tireless work, creating a negative image of the João Goulart government. It was verified along the research that the newspaper build a kind of narrative with his journalistic content with the aim of causing in its pages an impression of chaos in the country. For these narratives, we attribute the name of “Catastrophic Narratives”. The result of the analysis present in this work is the confirmation of the fact that the newspaper doesn’t bother itself with the public opinion, but with the future judgment that it’s actions implies, by the fear that the conclusion that it was an elite tool to promote the coup threat its survival as a vehicle of “impartial” information and the perpetuation as a capitalist enterprise / A pesquisa a seguir é resultado do trabalho que começou em 2015 tendo como objetivo analisar a relação entre o jornal “O Estado de São Paulo” e a influência que emana de seu público, considerando pesquisas de opinião publicadas pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Pesquisa de Opinião, também conhecido como IBOPE, na crise que culminou no golpe de Estado em 1964.
