Elle décrypte les stratégies du quotidien et l'importance de ces individusordinaires et leurs actions, entretenus essentiellement par les réseaux de toute nature, dans l’animationdes relations sino-nigérianes. / The rising influence of China in Africa is often considered as the mere expression of the will theChinese state. The role of migrants and Diasporas contributes decisively to the dynamism of theseinteractions. This is notably the case of the Chinese in Nigeria. Between China and Nigeria, inter-staterelations carry little significance, unlike the interactions associated with the presence of Chinesemigrants and entrepreneurs. The Chinese communities are solidly anchored in the Nigerian economicissue, and they create a momentum that combines business with politics. The thesis highlights anddiscusses, through observer-participant observations and interviews (both formally and informallyconducted) the impulse given by an 'economic Diaspora' that remains largely autonomous vis a visofficial relations. We analyze daily strategies and contrast these with official relations. In doing so, thethesis decrypts the daily strategies and the importance of ordinary individuals and their networks in thedevelopment of a diversity of networks that contribute, in their own way, to deepen Sino-Nigerianinteractions.

Unexpected Events in Nigerian Construction Projects: A Case of Four Construction CompaniesPidomson, Gabriel Baritulem 01 January 2016 (has links)
In Nigeria, 50% to 70% of construction projects are delayed due to unexpected events that are linked to lapses in performance, near misses, and surprises. While researchers have theorized on the impact of mindfulness and information systems management (ISM) on unexpected events, information is lacking on how project teams can combine ISM and mindfulness in response to unexpected events in construction projects. The purpose of this case study was to examine how project teams can combine mindfulness with ISM in response to unexpected events during the execution phase of Nigerian construction projects. The framework of High Reliability Theory revealed that unexpected events could be minimized by mindfulness defined by 5 cognitive processes: preoccupation with failure, reluctance to simplify, sensitivity to operations, commitment to resilience, and deference to expertise. In-depth semi-structured interviews elicited the views of 24 project experts on team behaviors, tactics, and processes for combining mindfulness with ISM. Data analysis was conducted by open coding to identify and reduce data into themes, and axial coding was used to identify and isolate categories. Findings were that project teams could combine mindfulness with ISM in response to unexpected events by integrating effective risk, team, and communication management with appropriate training and technology infrastructure. If policymakers, project clients, and practitioners adopt practices suggested in this study, the implications for social change are that project management practices, organizational learning, and the performance of construction projects may improve, construction wastes may be reduced, and taxpayers may derive optimum benefits from public funds committed to construction projects.

Investigating the effects of the proliferation of commercial broadcasting on public service broadcasting: the case of Rivers State of Nigeria Broadcasting CorporationDa-Wariboko, Biobele January 2006 (has links)
1992 marked a turning point in Nigeria’s broadcasting history as the country formally deregulated her broadcast space. However, it was not until March 2002 that the first commercial radio station was established in Rivers State, a broadcast environment hitherto monopolised by Radio Rivers. The coming of the first independent radio station in Rivers State in March 2002 was followed by the establishment of two other stations in October 2003 and November 2003 respectively. As important as these events in broadcasting in Rivers State are, however, media scholars have argued that in most societies where such change has taken place, public service broadcasters have tampered with their values of being an open space where individuals and groups can come together to be educated, informed, and entertained. This study investigates the extent to which the proliferation of commercial broadcasting outlets has affected Radio Rivers’ public service programming and scheduling. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, through in-depth interviews and analysis of the mandate and programme schedules, the study established that while Radio Rivers still maintains some public service values, its current programming policy is driven by the need to compete with the commercial broadcasters. This is evidenced in the decrease in the programme space allocated to current affairs and educational programmes on the schedule, (the genre of public service broadcasting), and the increase in attention to advertisements and entertainment programmes, (the genre of commercial broadcasting). The study also confirms the adverse effects of dwindling financial resources as forcing public service radios to compromise on their public service values, as majority of programmes on Radio Rivers current programme schedules are now geared towards attracting advertisers rather than serving the public good and interests. However, the study proved that it is not in all cases that the entry of commercial broadcasters into Rivers State broadcast space has undermined Radio Rivers public service values. Indeed, in leading to the expansion of interactive, news, and the diversification of entertainment programmes spaces on Radio Rivers’ programming schedules, the proliferation of commercial broadcasters has yielded some positive effects on Radio Rivers public service values and contribution to the public sphere. The study further highlights the need for some policy reforms at Radio Rivers, such as the introduction of licence fees, increased government funding and loosening government’s current control over the station. In addition, there is the need for the edict establishing the station to be amended to reflect the current trends in broadcasting in Rivers State, and above all to reposition Radio Rivers to sustain public good and public interests in its programming.

guidelines and recommendations for the closer integration of
the school with the world of work in South Africa. Chapter

Management and the dynamics of labour process: study of workplace relations in an oil refinery, NigeriaOladeinde, Olusegun Olurotimi January 2011 (has links)
The focus of this thesis is on labour-management relations in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigeria. The study explores current managerial practices in the corporation and their effects on the intensification of work, and how the management sought to control workers and the labour process. The study explores the experiences of workers and their perception of managerial practices. Evidence suggests that managerial practices and their impacts on workplace relations in NNPC have become more subtle, with wider implications for workers’ experience and the labour process. Using primary data obtained through interviews, participant observation, and documentary sources, the thesis assesses how managerial practices are varieties of controls of labour in which workers’ consent is also embedded. This embeddedness of the labour process generates new types of worker subjectivity and identity, with significant implications for labour relations. The study suggests that multiple dimensions of workers’ sense-making reflect the structural and subjective dimensions of the labour process. In NNPC, the consequence of managerial practices has been an emergence of a new type of subjectivity; one that has closely identified with the corporate values and is not overtly disposed towards resistance or dissent. While workers consent at NNPC continues to be an outcome of managerial practices, the thesis examined its implications. The thesis seeks to explain the effects of managerial control mechanisms in shaping workers’ experience and identity. However, the thesis shows that while workers remain susceptible to these forms of managerial influence, an erasure or closure of oppositions or recalcitrance will not adequately account for workers’ identity-formation. The thesis shows that while managerial control remains significant, workers inhabit domains that are ‘unmanaged’ and ‘unmanageable’ where ‘resistance’ and ‘misbehaviour’ reside. Without a conceptual and empirical interrogation, evidence of normative and mutual benefits of managerial practices or a submissive image of workers will produce images of workers that obscure their covert opposition and resistance. Workers ‘collude’ with the ‘hubris’ of management in order to invert and subvert managerial practices and intentions. Through theoretical reconceptualization, the thesis demonstrates the specific dimensions of these inversions and subversions. The thesis therefore seeks to re-insert “worker-agency” back into the analysis of power-relations in the workplace; agency that is not overtly under the absolute grip of managerial control, but with a multiplicity of identities and multilevel manifestations.

"For Training Purposes Only": West German Military Aid to Nigeria and Tanzania, 1962-1968Erich Wilhelm Drollinger (8698872) 17 April 2020 (has links)
Amidst the confrontation between the East and the West Bloc during the Cold War, the decolonization of Africa created an entirely new ideological battlefield for these two sides to compete with one another for power and influence. The Federal Republic of Germany, having been allowed to rearm its military less than a decade prior, sought to gain influence in Nigeria and Tanzania by providing them with military aid. However, in both cases it failed to fulfill its promises of aid. Through the examination of these case studies, this study argues that the Federal Republic’s ability to provide effective military aid to non-NATO countries was limited due to the combination of its cautious foreign policy and the dynamic political landscape of the countries to which it offered aid. Formerly classified government documents and newspaper articles constitute the majority of this study’s source material. While current historiography focuses on the impact of the Cold War superpowers in regions outside of Europe, less attention has been given to the important roles that smaller powers such as the Federal Republic have played. By analyzing a smaller global player, the goal of this study is to complicate the notion of the Cold War being binary in nature. Furthermore, it aims to illustrate the political tightrope that the Federal Republic walked when conducting military aid which stemmed from the legacy of its violent past and its status as a divided nation.

Die vorliegende Arbeit mit dem Titel „Ebíra English in Nigerian Supersystems: Inventory and Variation“ befasst sich mit einer kleinen Varietät des Nigerianischen Englisch, die für eine Untersuchung aus zwei Gründen besonders geeignet erscheint: Einerseits bin ich selbst Mitglied dieser Volksgruppe, was mir einen besonderen Zugang zu guten, aktuellen und vor allem natürlichen Sprachdaten ermöglicht. Diese sind für eine soziophonetische Untersuchung mit den Konzepten und modernen Methoden der Variationslinguistik von besonderer Bedeutung. Andererseits ist die vorliegende Arbeit keine weitere Studie über die großen Systeme des nigerianischen Englisch oder über die beiden größten und bereits relativ gut untersuchten Systeme des Yoruba-Englisch im Südwesten des Landes oder des Hausa-Englisch im Norden, sondern über eine relative kleine Gruppe dazwischen, die historisch zunächst von den Yoruba und später immer mehr von den Hausa-Sprechern beeinflusst wurde und nach wie vor beeinflusst ist. Diese empirische soziophonetische Studie stellt zwei Forschungsfragen:
FF1) Welches Vokalinventar besitzt Ebíra Englisch? Diese Frage ergibt sich aus den widersprüchlichen Ergebnissen vorheriger Untersuchungen (zu Nigerianischen, Yoruba- bzw. Hausa-Englisch) und soll hier erstmals in einer Analyse von digitalen Aufnahmen von 28 jüngeren und älteren Männern und Frauen (16 bzw. 12) aus den Jahren 2014-2016 untersucht werden. Diese Aufnahmen wurden im Rahmen von soziolinguistischen Interviews gemacht, die die bekannten Sprachstile (nach Labov) umfassen: Wortliste, Lesepassage (die bewährte Kurzgeschichte The Boy who Cried Wolf mit jeweils 90 vorkommenden englischen Vokalen) und Konversation. Diese Frage ist auch vor dem Hintergrund des Einflusses der beiden nahen Hauptvarietäten Yoruba- und Hausa-Englisch interessant (FF1b). Auf der Grundlage von fast 15.000 extrahierten Vokalen erfolgte jeweils nach der sorgfältigen Aussortierung unbrauchbarer oder unvollständiger Daten eine quantitative Untersuchung mit Hilfe des Analyseinstruments PRAAT, mit dem sich die Vokalqualität in Form von Formanten messen und darstellen lässt. Die Untersuchung umfasste die bekannten Monophthongkontraste (nach Wells` lexical sets) FLEECE & KIT, FOOT & GOOSE (+ USE ), LOT & THOUGHT & STRUT , TRAP & BATH & lettER , sowie NURSE , und die relativen Diphthonge FACE , GOAT und CURE.
FF2) Welche sprachlichen und sozialen Variablen können die Variation dieses Ebíra Englisch Vokalsystems erklären? Neben den bekannten sozialen Variablen Alter (bzw. Altersgruppe), Geschlecht, Mehrsprachigkeit und Bildung wurden v.a. die sprachlichen Variablen Vokaldauer, phonetische Umgebung der Vokale und Sprachstil untersucht. Interessanterweise war für eine so detaillierte Analyse der Variation die zunächst recht groß wirkende Anzahl der extrahierten Vokale nicht in jedem Fall groß genug oder nicht gut genug verteilt.

Security concerns: Nigeria's peacekeeping efforts in Liberia and Sierra Leone, 1990-1999Obodozie, Onuorah J. 31 January 2004 (has links)
The essence of this thesis is to explore the role of Nigeria, West Africa's hegemon, in the intervention efforts by the Economic Community of West African states (ECOWAS) through its Cease-fire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in both Liberia (1990-1997) and Sierra Leone (1993-2000). While the thesis has sought to understand the leading role played by Nigeria in first establishing the ECOWAS and being the primus motor for its functions, I have also attempted to analyse the rationalities for the transformation of ECOWAS from a purely economic integrative scheme to a security organisation. While the economic agendas for ECOWAS have not changed, the argument in this thesis is that security related issues and realities have taken precedence over the original economistic agendas. One of the thesis' major arguments is that the nature of results attained in both Liberia and Sierra Leone are different because of (a) the leadership role of Nigeria and (b) the nature of international responses and contributions to the resolution of these conflicts.
In the thesis, I argue that in the Liberian case, Nigeria took a more domineering leadership role albeit tinged with the characteristics of the actions of a benevolent hegemon. Here, Nigeria through different processes either through leadership, consensus-seeking processes and dialogue managed to get other ECOWAS states to coalesce around its leadership. However, in Sierra Leone, Nigeria's leadership role was not permitted to unfold. The resultant effect was the shift from NIFAG to ECOMOG and eventually "rekindling hatred" of these troops as UN troops.
This thesis has pointed to the utility of sub-regional organisations in resolving conflicts and demonstrates the need for further study. / Political Science / DLITT ET PHIL (INT POL)

Determinants of motivation among a selected group of civil service employees in NigeriaEjere, Emmanuel Iriemi S. 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to identify those job factors that determine the level of
motivation in the Nigerian Federal Civil Service Commission and to establish how
this knowledge can be used to increase motivation and job satisfaction across the
Nigerian Federal Civil Service. A wide variety of theories on motivation and job
satisfaction were studied. Herzberg's dual-factor theory of job satisfaction was
used as the defining basis for the empirical part of the study. The findings both
supported and refuted the theory. Both intrinsic and extrinsic job variables
influenced the work motivation of respondents, with specific extrinsic variables
having a significant effect, contrary to Herzberg's findings. A difference was also
recorded among senior staff who appeared more motivated by intrinsic variables
and junior staff who tended to emphasise extrinsic job variables. / Public Administration / D. Admin.
