Developing pupil understanding of school-subject knowledge : an exploratory study of the role of discourse in whole-class teacher-pupil interaction during English literature lessons

Smith, Jennifer Ann January 2018 (has links)
In this submission I explore the role played by discourse in the development of pupils' understanding of school-subject knowledge in secondary school classrooms in England, following changes to GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) specifications in 2015. Changes to the structure, the subject content, and the assessment of GCSEs were made in an effort to focus on 'powerful knowledge' during the Key Stage (KS) 4 curriculum (for pupils aged 14 - 16 years old) and in order to promote an emphasis on knowledge that is based on academic disciplines. My research looks at the concept of powerful knowledge, based in a critical realist epistemology and a social realist theory of knowledge, and the extent to which all young people are likely to access knowledge that is powerful in the classroom. I argue that access for all pupils to the means by which to judge knowledge claims and thereby challenge and change society - the transformational power of knowledge - underpins a social justice agenda. My research explores a less-developed aspect of the social realist debate on powerful knowledge, a pedagogic discourse to enable a move away from merely teaching factual or content knowledge. I propose that for knowledge to be powerful teachers and pupils need to be 'epistemologically aware'. My case-study research contributes new empirical findings to the literature on pedagogic discourse for a powerful knowledge curriculum. I discuss the learning trajectories of 15 pupils (including five from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds) from two Year 10 'case' classes observed over a 12-week period, during which they studied a novel as part of their GCSE English literature course. 'Thinking notes' and concept mapping were introduced as innovative data-gathering and analytical tools with which to gain a unique and detailed analysis of pupils' learning over the series of lessons given during the 12-week period. I discuss the teachers' conceptual framing of their discipline and the role that this, together with pupils' experiences and backgrounds, has in the re-contextualisation of discipline-based knowledge in the classroom. I conclude that pedagogic discourse that makes the epistemic logic and related concepts of a subject explicit - an epistemological awareness - may enable pupils from both disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds to build systems of meaning that transcend their everyday understanding of the world and the context in which they view it to access powerful knowledge. I present a conceptualisation of a powerful knowledge pedagogic discourse for the study of a novel in the KS4 English literature classroom.

Delayed effects and critical transitions in climate models

Quinn, C. January 2019 (has links)
There is a continuous demand for new and improved methods of understanding our climate system. The work in this thesis focuses on the study of delayed feedback and critical transitions. There is much room to develop upon these concepts in their application to the climate system. We explore the two concepts independently, but also note that the two are not mutually exclusive. The thesis begins with a review of delay differential equation (DDE) theory and the use of delay models in climate, followed by a review of the literature on critical transitions and examples of critical transitions in climate. We introduce various methods of deriving delay models from more complex systems. Our main results center around the Saltzman and Maasch (1988) model for the Pleistocene climate (`Carbon cycle instability as a cause of the late Pleistocene ice age oscillations: modelling the asymmetric response.' Global biogeochemical cycles, 2(2):177-185, 1988). We observe that the model contains a chain of first-order reactions. Feedback chains of this type limits to a discrete delay for long chains. We can then approximate the chain by a delay, resulting in scalar DDE for ice mass. Through bifurcation analysis under varying the delay, we discover a previously unexplored bistable region and consider solutions in this parameter region when subjected to periodic and astronomical forcing. The astronomical forcing is highly quasiperiodic, containing many overlapping frequencies from variations in the Earth's orbit. We find that under the astronomical forcing, the model exhibits a transition in time that resembles what is seen in paleoclimate records, known as the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. This transition is a distinct feature of the quasiperiodic forcing, as confi rmed by the change in sign of the leading nite-time Lyapunov exponent. Additional results involve a box model of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation under a future climate scenario and time-dependent freshwater forcing. We find that the model exhibits multiple types of critical transitions, as well as recovery from potential critical transitions. We conclude with an outlook on how the work presented in this thesis can be utilised for further studies of the climate system and beyond.

Using conceptual maps as resource for the construction of knowledge in biology focusing on the articulation of micro and macrobiology

Cordeiro, Carina de Souza 05 September 2018 (has links)
The practice of teaching the contents of Biology as a discipline of High School presents many obstacles to learning, among them the non-developing of the student\'s holistic and articulated vision when dealing with the approach of micro and macrobiology. This favors the construction of a fragmented view of a complex and interdependent system. As a way to overcome this difficulty, it is proposed to use the conceptual maps by students of the 1st and 3rd Year of High School in a private school in Pindamonhangaba - SP, aiming to offer a pedagogical practice which with the exploration of conceptual maps, creates conditions for the student to build the biology\'s knowledge, developing a holistic view of the phenomena with their entities and processes. The research was applied in four stages and carried out by the students organized in groups. Initially, activities were developed to familiarize with the tool, using the CmapTools software. Next, the students completed maps previously constructed; inserting concepts and available relations in stagnation, besides constructing a map from text of the didactic material adopted and completed this map from research, which sought, among other things, the development of autonomy in the pursuit of knowledge. Finally, four maps were constructed based on focal questions, elaborated with the purpose of seeking the integrative reconciliation in the construction of students\' knowledge. The results reveal that most of the students were able to integrate the concepts and relations necessary to answer the focal question, allowing the student\'s protagonism, meaningful learning and the collaborative construction of knowledge.

The Middle English lexical field of 'insanity' : semantic change and conceptual metaphor

Begley, Mary January 2019 (has links)
This thesis is an investigation of Middle English insanity language. It analyses change in the Middle English lexical field of INSANITY, the semantic structure of lexemes wod and mad, and compares INSANITY conceptual metaphors in Middle English and present-day English. The INSANITY lexical field is an ideal one to study language change, due to socio-cultural changes since the Middle Ages such as advances in medical knowledge, the development of the field of psychiatry and legal changes protecting people with a mental illness from discrimination. The general theoretical aims were to examine a) change in conceptual metaphor, and b) semantic and lexical change with a particular focus on the decline in use of adjective wod. The theoretical frameworks are cognitive linguistics, prototype theory, and conceptual metaphor theory, and the data is derived from Middle English corpora and other sources. The INSANITY database I created for this study consisted of 1307 instances of mad, wod and near-synonyms in context. The main results can be divided into three groups. Firstly, the lexical field study demonstrates that various intra-linguistic and socio-cultural phenomena effect lexical change. Using case studies amongst others of the decline of wod in the Wycliffite Bible and of Caxton's translations from French, and a systematic variation across genre, I argue that the important factors are i) the arrival of new medical loanwords such as frensy, lunatic and malencolie; ii) the early re-emergence of the vernacular in medical texts starting in the twelfth century, and the development of a new medical register; iii) the so-called medieval 'inward turn'; iv) changes in the neighbouring lexical field of ANGER. Secondly, the semasiological study of wod and mad shows that the meanings of these two lexemes are structured and change in line with the central tenets of prototype theory, i.e. as described for diachronic prototype semantics by Geeraerts (1997). The path of mad's semantic development does not parallel that of wod after the thirteenth century. Mad's senses do not have the emphasis on wildness and fury that the senses of wod do. A particularly interesting finding is the semantic change from a sub-sense of adverb mad and adjective mad, 'unrestrained', leading in present-day English to a new delexicalised and grammaticalised sense of mad, where its use as an intensifier enhances scalar quantity and quality. Thirdly, the conceptual metaphor study demonstrates that predominantly the same conceptual metaphors are seen in both Middle English and present-day English, with some exceptions such as the concept of insanity being related to moral decline, as evidenced in the dearth of FALLING metaphors for insanity in present-day English. Conceptual metaphors such as INSANITY IS ANOTHER PLACE are evidenced in present-day English expressions such as out of her senses, or not in my right mind. In 1422, Thomas Hoccleve could write of a dysseveraunce between himself and his wit, or about his wyld infirmitie, which threw him owt of my selfe, illustrating the same underlying concepts. Other INSANITY conceptual metaphors which remain unchanged are GOING ASTRAY, LACK OF ORDER, LACK OF WHOLENESS, DARKNESS, FORCE, PRISON and BURDEN. Because of its unique approach in combining onomasiological and semasiological approaches with a conceptual metaphor study, this study reveals not only specific patterns of change, but differences in the rate of change on the lexical and conceptual levels. Lexical change driven by the need to be expressive, and reflecting socio-cultural changes such as changes in medical knowledge, can be seen to happen rapidly over the Middle English period. However, underlying conceptual change is barely discernible even over a much longer period of time from Middle English to present-day English. This research is significant because it provides a basis for future analysis of insanity language in other periods and contexts. It also contributes to the study of semantic change in general, highlighting the insights that can be gained by combining different types of data-driven analyses.

Hmt : modelagem e projeto de aplicações hipermídia / HMT: hypermedia applications modeling and design

Nemetz, Fabio January 1995 (has links)
After three decades of hypermedia research a great number of identified problems still remain without a total solution. Problems related to disorientation, cognitive overhead, interface, interaction and structure of hypermedia applications components are some of the main problems. The classical user disorientation problem has been the main focus of the attention. Many solution proposals have been suggested: the use of guided tours replacing navigation, backtrack, history mechanisms, bookmarks, global and local maps, fisheye views, metaphors, browsers, among others. We note that the technological advance allows the construction of applications that include multimedia data. This shows us that new modeling techniques for hypermedia applications are required to reduce the problems cited above. In this dissertation, we intend to propose a modeling technique for hypermedia applications, capable of reducing both the user disorientation problem and the identification of comprehensible structures that will link the components of the application. This modeling technique - the HMT (Hypermedia Modeling Technique) - uses four models to describe an application: the object model describes the objects of the application domain and their relationships; the hyperobject model enhances the object model, adding more semantics to the relationships; the navigation model describes the access structures and the interface model contains the descriptions of how the user will perceive the hypermedia objects. The HMT technique was based on the relevant problems related to hypermedia applications and mainly on the analysis of the proposals and related research found in the literature. Finally, reinforcing the viability of the proposed ideas, an application was modeled, designed and implemented: the CD-ROM "Enciclopedia da Literatura Rio- Grandense" which deals with literary information.

Grau de maturidade conceitual dos instrumentos de controladoria utilizados na avaliação de desempenho em hospitais filantrópicos do Estado de São Paulo / Level maturity concept of controllership instruments used in performance evaluation in hospitals philanthropic of São Paulo state.

Pereira, Luciana Parreira Pinheiro 11 February 2015 (has links)
Over the past years, there was the growth of the third sector on meeting the human necessities, due to the inefficiency of government policies. In 2010, non-profit entities represented 10% of the total existing organizations in Brazil. The nonprofits must have company behavior and State responsibility, the need to be self-sustaining. So come in competitive environment in contention for financial resources from public and private sources. In order to make it viable in the medium and long term, nonprofits need controllership instruments that allow assessment of the institution\'s performance, allowing the efficiency and effectiveness of the resources employed. Due to the scenario above, this study aims to evaluate the conceptual stage of maturity of the controllership instruments used in the evaluation of institutional performance. In reviewing the literature on the subject, identified the existence of studies with the pointing of the main controllership instruments used by non-profit organizations: planning and budget control, cost management, Balanced Scorecard - BSC and financial accounting. This study provides an analysis of the conceptual model to evaluate the controllership instruments used for evaluating institutional performance of nonprofits, specifically, the philanthropic hospitals in the state of São Paulo, since identified a gap in the literature on this aspect. As an additional contribution, this study highlighted the importance of conceptual maturity of the aforementioned instruments used by nonprofits in order to comply with the provisions and objectives of each of these instruments. The methodology used in this research was a survey with 51 statements prepared based on the main conceptual aspects, drawn from national and international literature. Of the 228 entities covered by the study, 39 responded appropriately to the instrument. The results led the indication of a positive level of conceptual maturity: 3.8 on a scale of 1 (lowest maturity) and 5 (more mature), with the possibility of improvements in such factors: processes, people, infrastructure and culture.

Terminologia e neologia em silvicultura urbana: o léxico na ressignificação do espaço urbano / Terminology and neology in urban forestry: the lexicon in the resignification of urban space

Soares, Vilma de Fatima 18 February 2016 (has links)
The objective of this work, based on theoretical and methodological postulates of Terminology and Neology, is to present, in sampling, the terminology of the area of knowledge and specialty of Urban Forestry. Our purpose is to demonstrate the importance of neological studies and the scope of their processes, both in the formation of an area of knowledge, as in the transfer of information from one area of specialty to a lay audience, proficient in reading, which may, among other purposes, generate support for the preparation of a dictionary. To achieve our objectives, based on corpora from the area of Urban Forestry (documentary corpus, reference corpus and analysis corpus), with the use of software, we selected a sampling of 100 terms, which we have expanded by exploratory additional analysis to identify some productive formations by prefixal and suffixal derivation and some formations by acronyms and abbreviations. As a strategy for understanding the area, we developed illustrative graphical representations: the domain tree, some relational maps and descriptive analysis frameworks of the area. We observed that the lexical units, in the function of term or in the function of word, have degrees of neologicity in a continuous, from the highest to the lowest degree, considering the communication between experts, between them and the lay audience, whether it consists of proficient readers or not. We then consider that a lexical unit maintains a permanent neological aspect which varies according to time and space, in diachronic and synchronic studies, in every speech and their universes and in the relation of production and reception of what can be considered new

January 2006 (has links)
Consideramos que o tratamento da dimensão conceitual dos conteúdos traz importantes contribuições para a formação do aluno, portanto, precisa ser valorizado nas aulas de Educação Física / Abstract: Taking the position in favour of pedagogic practices in Physical Education, which intend to overcome limitations of the traditional teaching model for student's education, including among its objectives the instruction for democratic citizenship; considering that the application of the conceptual contents is one of the common aspects of these theories; we have decided to develop this research, analysing how two Physical Education teachers, who work at Elementary Schools, hold Master Degrees in the field and have favourable positions on new proposals, handle contents of the conceptual dimension in their classes. Through an ethnografic study, involving observation and analysis of the classes, the teaching plan and the interviews with students and other teachers, we tried to investigate what conceptual contects were used, why they were used and the ways of teaching these contents. The main handled conceptual contents refer to the undestanding of meanings, objectives, principles and possibilities of knowledge concerning motor skills, physiology, health, physical capabilities, training, historical, social, economic, politic, esthetic and cultural aspects, rules, techniques, tactics of the integrating practices of the corporal culture (games, dances, fights, gymnastics, sports) due to the belief that the application of this knowledge in a suitable way will allow students to enlarge their reflections, thus their capacity of criticism, which is a fundamental element for teaching citizenship. Several strategies can be utilized for conceptual contents treatment. Others shoud also be quite efficient, such as: drawings, videos and researches / Mestre
