Previous issue date: 2010-06-08 / Fundação Ford / In the course of recent decades, the Supplementary Education or Non-Formal Education
took important space in NGOs (Non Governental Organization) and in socio-educational
works developed directly by the public power, with particular emphasis in the practices of
Art-education, including many artistic languages aimed to occupy the opening intercalated
public fundamental school activities.
Such works happen, mainly, in the outskirts of urban centers, or even in the regions of
slums in the center of the town. Most of this area is inhabited by a predominantly black
population, migrant or a descendant of Northeast immigrants living in what Souza Martins
would call contexts of perverse inclusion .
It is in this scenario where Art-education takes place: a complex area of knowledge with
many specificities, precisely because of its target audience and the geographical area where it
develops.
Art-education developed in the outskirt of urban area, what does it want? How does it
act concerning issues dealing with perverse inclusion of this population, such as, racism,
discrimination and the prejudice found in such places? In which way the art-educator deals
with the issues related to cultural universe of this people (religious options, musical tastes and
food, values, etc.) ?
We´ve found, by observing the everyday spaces, where art-educational activities occur,
as well as by the development of courses and workshops we offer about the theme, where a
number of questions are involved in this actions and have impact on the performance of
professionals in their daily. However, which critical benchmarks guide his action day to day?
We must not forget that is in the Art that the human is recognized as a builder of self and that,
despite the life and its hardships, the Art teaches to understand and develop alternatives
for survival and the transformation of his reality / No decorrer das últimas décadas, a Educação Complementar ou Educação Não Formal
Tais trabalhos acontecem,
religiosas, gostos musicais e alimentares, valores, etc.)?
dia a dia?

A educação nas prisões: um estudo sobre a participação da sociedade civil / Prison education: a study about the participation of civil societyMariangela Graciano 25 May 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this research is the investigation of educational practices carried out by civil society organizations and volunteer individuals in the São Paulo State prison system. These initiatives consist of sharing responsibility between the State and civil society, being comprehended and stimulated in guidelines concerning education in the prison environment. Considering the scarcity of systematic information concerning these partnerships, one of the goals of this research is the characterization of partnerships established; the identification of the motivations, intentionality and purposes that guide these initiatives; the differences between activities developed in male and female prisons, among others. The research made possible to identify evidences of changes in prison education. These evidences are often in accordance with the ones perceived by different authors in Brazil and in the world concerning the expansion of incarceration, the emergence of a privilege system upon which the maintenance of the prison internal order is founded, as well as the abdication of the rehabilitation purpose. However, both governments and civil society organizations actions, as well as the research area, indicate that prison education has been developing to become a specific field for both analysis and public policymaking, still incipient but already distinguishable.

This thesis presents the results of a research concerning the design,
implementation and evaluation of a teaching intervention relevant to the
classification of animals within the formal and non-formal education. This
teaching intervention refers to preschoolers, is based on the principles of
'constructive' approach of teaching and learning of science and includes
educational activities which take place both at school and at the zoological
museum.
According to the findings of the research, there is indications
accordance to which children after the end of the teaching intervention are able
to construct the concept of classification of animals using morphological
characteristics instead of function or anthropomorphic ones. More specifically,
this thesis gives indications according to which children after the teaching
intervention are able (a) to improve their knowledge on the recognition and
denomination of specimens of animals belonging to the categories of 'reptile',
'bird', 'fish' and 'mammal' and (b) to recognize a category of animals by an
animal sample based on the morphological characteristics. Finally, it is also
noted that the visit to the zoological museum and the educational activities
carried out in situ seems to make a significant contribution in the
transformation and progress of cognitive representations of children for the
concept of classifying animals.

The influence of initiation schools on adolescent knowledge and attitudes towards HIV/AIDS and gender related issues in the Maluti Area, Eastern Cape.Sitole, Nomhle N. January 2008 (has links)
Although many cultures attach great value to young males attending traditional initiation schools, there are a number of questions that remain unanswered. Because of the secrecy that surrounds these schools, there may be many opportunities for addressing vital social issues that may not be made use of or are not known. The purpose of this study was to explore the role played by the initiation schools in educating the young men about HIV/AIDS and gender related issues in the Maluti area in the Eastern Cape from the leader’s and from the initiates’ perspectives. A comparison with non-initiates was also conducted. The researcher also aimed to explore the programs offered at the initiation schools; whether initiation schools serve as a source of knowledge pertaining to HIV/AIDS and gender related issues to the young men. The researcher conducted interviews with leaders of two different initiation schools, focus group discussions with two groups of young males that had attended two different initiation schools, and also with one group of young males that had not yet attended initiation school in the Maluti area. The study was qualitative and data was analysed using content analysis.
The results reflect that both initiated and uninitiated young males had attended same workshops on gender issues offered through their schools, the only difference in knowledge and attitude is therefore based on what the initiated youth learnt from the initiation school. This knowledge reflected an understanding of equity principles in treating women. In addition, the initiated young males reflected some understanding of the equal rights and treatment of women. However there was little difference between the two groups of young males, perhaps because there was apparently not much included at initiation school. Another reason could have been because the initiates did not perceive it as one of the important issues discussed since there was little emphasis coming from the initiation school, the leaders or from the visiting speakers. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2008.

An exploration of the informal learning experiences of home-based caregivers in a non-governmental organisation in KwaZulu-Natal.Kheswa, Siyanda Edison. 30 May 2014 (has links)
Social science research on HIV and AIDS has tended to focus on the statistics regarding the spread of the pandemic and the prevention awareness campaigns. However, there has not been much research on the impact that the pandemic has on families and communities at large. Furthermore, although there are international studies very little research has been conducted on caregivers’ education and training locally. Therefore, the current study was done to bridge the gap between literature and practice by conveying findings that are based on a local South African context.
The study was conducted in Mpophomeni Township, in Kwazulu-Natal. The research participants consisted of twelve home-based caregivers. The purpose of the study was to explore the informal learning experiences of home-based caregivers from a non-governmental organisation, Siyasiza, in KwaZulu-Natal. The study tried to establish what informed the informal learning experiences of caregivers. The study further investigated how the informal learning experiences were made explicit to inform further learning and also tried to find out what caregivers did with shared information to inform their practices. In order to achieve the objectives of the study a basic qualitative research design was deemed most suitable. The situated and experiential learning theories informed the study and were also used as lenses in the thematic analysis of data collected through observation, focus group discussions and in depth interviews.
The findings of the study showed that caregivers’ informal learning experiences were informed by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The loss of own family members influenced caregivers to join the community home-based caregiving initiative to assist families affected by the pandemic. Furthermore, caregivers’ informal learning experiences were driven by career-directed ambition, exemplary learning and second chance learning. The findings further indicated that, for some caregivers, once new information was obtained, it was compared with the related prior knowledge, looked at for similarities or differences, and the value added to the previous experiences was determined. The study also found that caregivers valued and appreciated the
information sharing sessions which improved their future practices and so made their jobs a bit easier.
Lastly, the study found that caregivers played a huge role in supporting the families affected by HIV and AIDS since they mediated between homes and hospital by providing basic health services. / Thesis (M.Ed.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2014.

Over the last decade, public policies for science and technology popularization have been institutionalized in Brazil. However, there are a limited number of studies on the methodologies used and the contents developed. In this context, the central goal of this thesis is to examine the scientific popularization on nanotechnology in different media that respond to interests and values of different social groups, and to investigate, through a comparative analysis, the characteristics of the science popularization models utilized by these media, the contents addressed and those absent, and their educative function. The methodological approach consists of a content analysis, both qualitative and quantitative, based on the Social Studies of Science and Technology, particularly the Latin American strands, and the studies on non-formal education. The thesis analyzes the Science sections of the open television program Bom Dia Brasil and the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo produced during the period 2008-2010, and a non-aleatory 20% sample of the webTV interview show Nanotecnologia do Avesso exhibited during 2009-2010. The comparative analysis showed that definitions of nanotechnology considerably vary among the media, depending on who produced them and the circumstances that led to their enunciation and stabilization. In Bom Dia Brasil and Folha de S. Paulo the concept of nanotechnology emphasizes the material artifact, providing scarce information on its socio-technical configuration, while the latter aspect is widely addressed by the program Nanotecnologia do Avesso. All the media describe the new properties and functions of the matter in the nanoscale, but differ in the way they do it, according to the interests of the relevant actors represented, some highlighting the potential for innovation that stems from such properties; other stressing the new risks they entail. Bom Dia Brasil and Folha de S. Paulo emphasize the promises and benefits of these new properties and functionalities, such as more efficient products that will open up new markets, advances in health research and quality of life, and environmental preservation. Such visions reproduce discourses based on linear models that stress the neutrality, inexorability and continuous progress of science and technology. In Nanotecnologia do Avesso is preeminent the discussion on potential risks and social, legal and ethical implications of nanotechnology, and the demand for the application of the precautionary principle and mandatory regulation. The conclusion of the thesis is that science popularization on nanotechnology is an educational process full of tensions and polarizations that transcends its specificity of symbolic practice and is articulated to the broader social and productive practice, sometimes approaching, sometimes deviating from the sociotechnical citizenship perspective, depending on the popularization models that are used and the social groups that are represented.

Environmental problems are founded in a crisis of values, where the incorporation of environmental attitudes is an urgent need. In this sense the educational processes are essential to boost the transformations necessary to the survival of society and these processes can occur both in formal education and in non-formal education. No need to bring knowledge and raise awareness among young people about the importance of environmental issues, helping to develop a critical attitude before the socio-environmental crisis. The Educommunication that has as one of its commitments participative content production, is presented as a possible tool for the realization of social and environmental interventions. This survey was conducted with 52 people aged between 14 and 17 years during their period of school hours in the Institute of Social Assistance located in the city of Curitiba, Parana state. The research objective aimed to develop, implement and evaluate methods of education, using tools of environmental educational and communication. Such activity was focused on promoting information and awareness related to the impact of solid waste on water bodies. It was developed from a mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative), the methodological principles of action research through an initial diagnosis of environmental perception, level of knowledge and attitudes related to the subject. The analysis of such results was utilized for planning and preparation of activities with a logical construction of knowledge. The interventions addressed theories and practices known as “Oficinas”. This strategy used proper procedures that consisted of lectures, discussions, field activities, radio programs, photographs and footage, events and the creation of pages on social networking to achieve the aimed results. All textual and audiovisual material produced served as subsidies for production of environmental educational communication with the objective of instilling environmental awareness on young pelople and society about pollution of rivers by solid residues. The information and knowledge gained during the research has supported the compilation of knowledge on the effects of human interference in aquatic systems as well as on raising awareness of sustainable attitudes. Thus, the whole process has enabled the dialogue, participation, expression, creativity and reasoning of the subjects involved in the research.
