Parental Involvement in Pediatric Hospital Care-Implications for Clinical Practice and Quality of Care

Ygge, Britt Marie January 2004 (has links)
The overall aim of this thesis was to gain a deeper understanding about parents’ perceptions of quality of care and their own involvement in pediatric hospital care. Parental involvement in the care of hospitalized children has gained increased attention in recent years. The aim of this thesis was to study parental involvement in pediatric hospital care and investigate its association to the work conditions of pediatric hospital staff. The first study validated a parent questionnaire that measured parents’ views of the quality of care. The questionnaire measures quality of care by means of eight indices and an overall quality grade. Results showed that the questionnaire demonstrated satisfactory validity and reliability. Study 2 examined whether there were differences in quality ratings between respondents and non-respondents to the parent questionnaire. The main parent questionnaire was distributed in hospital and a follow-up questionnaire was sent home to a random sample of parents three week after the hospital visit. This study pinpointed a number of difficulties that need to be considered when conducting investigations of non-response. The third study aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of factors that influence parents’ views of their own involvement in pediatric care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents of chronically ill children. Four themes emerged from the interviews: support, professionalism, work environment and responsibility. Underlying these four themes is a need for a clear communication between staff and parents. The fourth study examined hospital staff’s perceptions of parental involvement and possible consequences for staff work environment. A questionnaire was sent out to hospital staff at oncology, neurology and surgery units at three university children’s hospitals. Hospital staff on oncology units gave higher ratings to their workplace routines for involving parents in the child’s care, and experienced less work strain from parental demands, compared to staff on the other units. The results of this thesis indicate a clear association between parental involvement in pediatric care and the work conditions of pediatric hospital staff.

Instructional Technology Usage in Early Learning Environments: The Influence on Environmental Access, Training, Parental Use and Education

Jones, Nadia J 24 July 2015 (has links)
The life of a child has completely transitioned from analogue to digital in the past 20 years. The use of digital devices and media has tripled among children between the ages of 0-8 years old since 2011. With the increasing amount of internet access in places that children and families frequent, it is almost impossible to go anywhere without the Wi-Fi access information being made available to consumers to enjoy while they patronize the business. Educators are in a unique position to find creative ways to incorporate technology into their instruction; however, this nuance is not without its challenges. Many early learning programs have not incorporated technology into their programs for a variety of reasons such as, but not limited to: lack of funding, fear, and the belief that it is not developmentally appropriate. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and The Fred Rogers Center drafted a joint statement that provided a framework for early childhood educators to use as they introduced technology and digital media into their learning environments. The researcher of this study conducted a mixed methods study with three diverse early learning programs in the southeastern part of the United States. After examining the aforementioned variables, the researcher found there to be no difference in the technology usage rate among the three schools. The findings also indicated that two out of the three schools were better equipped than the other with technology and access to digital media. Despite several of the survey participants having said that they had not received training on how to use digital devices for instructional purposes, an overwhelming 92% of them admitted to using technology for daily task completion. The researcher was not able to collect sufficient data to answer the question about parental influence. However, the researcher has identified this variable as an area for future research and believes that further examination will yield thought-provoking results regarding parental influence.

Belleville, Maude 11 1900 (has links)
A number of studies have linked a child’s school adjustment in kindergarten to his or her future academic success. This early preparation entails a number of factors, including parental involvement in the child’s school life, though there is no consensus on the issue. Our study therefore has two objectives. First, it determines which characteristics of the teacher, family and child are associated with parental involvement. The primary objective is to establish possible links between parental involvement and a child’s school adjustment in kindergarten. Our findings indicate that the teacher’s age and professional experience, the age of the parents, and the mother’s education level are factors associated with parental involvement. In addition, we show that each aspect of a child’s school adjustment in kindergarten (i.e. physical health and well-being, cognitive development, social integration, self-regulation, etc.) is associated with parent-teacher communication and parental involvement in the child’s school. Our study thus makes a valuable contribution to the field of education science, by demonstrating the relationship between parental involvement and a child’s school adjustment.

The problems are not just quantity - more jobs, schools or teachers. It is mainly quality. Much of the faculty do not have mastery of subjects that they teach and do not have remuneration that ensures satisfaction and willingness to teach. Schools do not provide adequate infrastructure for students - lack of investment in technology, accessibility, extracurricular courses. Thus, the parent involvement in the school life of children may be an important factor in student academic proficiency, and may ensure greater academic achievement for Brazilian students. The objective of this work is to study whether some attitudes of the parents can play an important role in school proficiency of their children. Data were used from 2009 and 2010 Prova São Paulo. This test was applied in municipal schools in the city of São Paulo. It was found that the interaction between parents and the school, as well as the interaction between parents and children, is significant in the academic performance of students. Parents who participate in the day-to-day school cause positive effects on proficiency of their children. It was also found that students whose academic performance worsens over time get more help from their parents with school issues.

Managing discipline in a post-corporal punishment era environment at secondary schools in the Sekhukhune school district, Limpopo

Ntuli, Lesheleba Tiny 28 June 2013 (has links)
Managing discipline in schools is one of the fundamentals of effective teaching and learning. It is evident that ineffective discipline management in schools would eventually jeopardize the efficacy of teaching and learning. So, it is crucial that legitimate, democratic disciplinary measures and procedures should be employed. The aim of this study was to investigate ways of managing discipline in selected secondary schools within Sekhukhune District, Limpopo. A qualitative research approach was chosen, employing research methods which included individual interviews, focus group interviews and non-participant observation. The investigation focused on four secondary schools which were purposefully sampled to participate in the study. The research concentrated only on the views of the educators and the principals. This investigation revealed that principals and educators still find themselves in a predicament in applying contemporary disciplinary measures due to a lack of training or minimal training regarding alternatives to corporal punishment. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. ENVOLVIMENTO PARENTAL NO CONTEXTO DA EDUCAÇÃO INFANTIL E SÉRIES INICIAIS DE ALUNOS COM AUTISMO / PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN THE CONTEXT OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND SERIES OF STUDENTS WITH AUTISM

Vargas, Rosanita Moschini 06 January 2014 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul / The objective of this study was to investigate the practices of parental involvement of the schools faced on mothers whose their children have autism. It was observed a shortage of national studies about the theme even official documents about the inclusion of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder highlight the family role with school and still, studies involving the theme limited to investigate students with this typical development, without consider the specificities as in the case of students with ASD. From the literature revision of explanatory models that support the relationship of parental involvement, are proposed reflections about it, regarding the relationship between mothers and students´ school with autism from Joyce Epstein´s typological model. Based on that typology was investigated which are the parental involvement practices implemented by schools and if they contemplate the aspects that students´ mothers with autism value the most, faced on their necessities and of their children. This study fitted in a multiple case study of the type exploratory descriptive transversal, whose the data were analyzed based on contents analysis. Semi-structure Interview about parental involvement practices was used. The interviews were carried out with three mothers whose their children have autism and they are attending the Childhood Education and the first year of Fundamental Education and three teachers of the Municipal Public Schools of Santa Maria city. The results show that among the practices of parental involvement, there is the home-school, which is perceived by mothers as inadequate, undermining the trust between these communication contexts. As for school support to mothers to encourage their children's learning, it was observed that the orientations of teachers are more focused on the deficits of students than their resources. Finally, the model of parental involvement was adequate for understanding this phenomenon in the Brazilian reality.

Various family, cultural, and historical transformations in contemporary society have made the father's role in the family more complex and plural. With these changes happening, it becomes increasingly relevant to study paternal involvement in the transition to paternity. In this sense, the present doctoral thesis has as general objective to investigate, from the perspective of the father, the paternal involvement during the gestation, the delivery and the third month of the baby. To achieve this purpose, the longitudinal qualitative research method was used. 30 men who were about being parents for the first time took part in the research. They resided in Salvador (BA) and were addressed in a private gynecology and obstetrics clinic, located in a middle-upper class neighborhood of Salvador. For the data collection, three semi-structured interview scripts were built; containing open questions, each of them was applied in one of the following moments: (a) the last trimester of pregnancy of the first child; (B) one week after delivery; (C) three months of the baby. The research project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Maternity Climério de Oliveira, whose opinion number was 456,434. The interviews were recorded and held in a place of convenience for the parents and all signed the Term of Free and Informed Consent. The recordings were transcribed and categories were constructed from the answers obtained. Data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The main results were: paternal involvement in pregnancy occurred through the desire and affection of the father in relation to the imagined child and the good relationship with the baby's mother. Already in the delivery, the involvement was verified from the first time the father saw the son and he held him on his lap. Finally, when the baby was three months old, the involvement was shown in the different forms of interaction, in the quality of the involvement and in the time available to the child and in the responsibilities acquired when caring for the child. It was concluded that parents were generally involved with their children, both by the desire and in the practice they were quite involved, presenting a growing movement of involvement when considering the three moments of the data collection.
