The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) is a semi-structured interview used to identify changes in self-perception of client\'s occupational performance over time. The COPM identifies problems in the three areas of occupational performance (selfcare, productivity and leisure) and provides a score for the priorities, performance and satisfaction with these problems. The aim of this study is to determine the reliability test-retest (intra-rater and inter-rater agreement) and the divergent validity of COPM in olders with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The reliability of COPM was determined by intra-rater agreement in 27 subjects assessed twice by the same examiner in a mean interval of 16 days and by inter-rater agreement in 28 subjects assessed by two independent examiners in the same day. Divergent validity was assessed in 58 MCI subjects comparing the COPM with the Self Assessment of Occupational Functioning Scale (SAOF) and the Role Checklist. Intra-rater correlation of prioritized problems in occupational performance, the scores on performance in the problems and satisfaction with this performance were, respectively 0.78, p<0.001, 0.52, p=0.007 and 0.13, p=0.284. In the inter-rater part of the study the correlations were 0.69, p<0.001, 0.66, p<0.001 and 0.67, p<0.001. The correlation between the COPM and the SAOF was 0.42, p=0.001 and between the COPM and the Role Checklist it was 0.31, p=0.017. COPM has good reliability in intra and inter-rater agreement of prioritized problems in occupational performance and moderate reliability in the scores of performance in these problems. The divergent validity of COPM was confirmed with the low correlations between COPM and SAOF and between COPM and Role Checklist. These results suggest that the COPM can be an effective instrument for identifying self-perceived occupational performance problems and for the scores of performance in these problems in Brazilian older adults with MCI

January 2009 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The analysis of the level of participation in school is essential to understand the quality of inclusion of children with special needs in the general education classrooms. For this evaluation it is important to focus attention on the student functionality before the demands of the environment, using as a resource for collecting information it is used a standardized criterion-referenced assessment. This work investigated the performance of students identified in school records as having special needs, the instrument used for this task was the School Function Assessment (SFA) which has as its objectives the identification of levels of aid offered to the children and the understanding of the views of teachers about the importance of that instrument. A group of eight teachers participated in this work evaluating nine students with special needs enrolled on the basic education in regular public schools. The results indicated that the participation performance of those students is close to what is expected from a typical student in each one of the school environments: regular classrooms, playground/recess, transportation, bathroom/toileting, transitions, meal time/snack time. The environments presenting greatest difficulty were: participation in the regular classroom and participation in the playground/recess. It was noticed the presence of high levels of assistance by other people during the tasks having little or none adaptation. In the view of the teacher, the instrument (SFA) brings a clearer understanding about the performance and participation of students in the school, but it does not bring immediate added value to the daily work in the classroom. This data suggests that the descriptive diagnostic of the functionality is something to be carefully posted on the school records as the special needs must be identified by the relationship of the student with the school environment... Occupation-based and occupation-focused evaluation and intervention with children : a validation study of the assessment of motor and process skills (AMPS)Gantschnig, Brigitte Elisabeth January 2014 (has links)
Introduction Occupational therapists are concerned with enabling people to perform the daily life tasks they need, want, or are expected to perform for fullest possible integration into community living and participation in society. Children with mild disabilities have problems performing personal and instrumental activities of daily living (ADL) tasks at home or school, and that can limit their full integration and participation in their homes and school lives. There is a need, therefore, to identify their specific problems with ADL task performance so as to be able to develop effective interventions. Not only, there is a need for evidence related to effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions for children with mild disabilities, but also a need for valid occupational-therapy-specific evaluation tools for use with children. Purpose The purpose of this thesis was to contribute evidence to support the valid use of the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) with children, including children living in Middle Europe. More specifically, I aimed to evaluate validity evidence from different sources related to the use of the AMPS in occupation-based and occupation-focused evaluation and intervention. Method This thesis consisted of four studies, implemented in two phases. Phase one focused on evaluation of a) validity evidence of the AMPS scales in relation to internal structure and stability of item difficulty calibration values for a Middle European sample compared to samples from other world regions (Study I); b) the stability of the mean AMPS measures between typically-developing children from Middle Europe and from other world regions (Study II); and c) the sensitivity of the AMPS measures to discriminate between typically-developing children and children with and at risk for mild disabilities (Study III). Participants for phase one were from both Middle Europe and from other world regions and they were selected from the AMPS database, Ft. Collins, Colorado, USA. Data were analyzed using many-facet Rasch analyses, ANOVAs, regression analyses, related post-hoc tests, and effect size calculations. Phase two of the research project focused on evaluating validity evidence for the use of the AMPS as a standardized, occupation-based, and occupation-focused evaluation tool in the context of a feasibility study with children with mild disabilities implemented in a Swiss setting (Study IV). Data were analyzed based on feasibility objectives and the principles of deductive content analysis. The evaluation of validity evidence of the AMPS in relation to consequences of testing and test fairness was a focus of all studies (Studies I to IV). Results In Study I, data for 1346 participants from Middle Europe and 144,143 participants from other world regions were analyzed. The participants were between the ages of 3 and 103 years, and they were well or had a variety of diagnoses. The results revealed that overall the item difficulty calibration values of the AMPS remained stable and that only one out of 36 ADL items of the AMPS demonstrated DIF, but this DIF did not lead to DTF (i.e., all measures fell within 95% confidence bands). In Study II, data for 11,189 typically-developing children from Middle Europe and other world regions who were between the ages of 2 and 15 were analyzed. The results of ANOVAs revealed significant effects for mean ADL motor and for ADL process ability measures by region and a significant age by region interaction effect for mean ADL process ability. Out of 168 estimated contrasts between Middle Europe and the other world regions for mean ADL motor and ADL process ability, only seven were statistically significant (4.17%), and only two were more than ±1 SE from the international means. In Study III, regression analyses of data for 10,998 children, 4 to 15 years, who were typically-developing or with mild disabilities, revealed significant age by group interaction effects. Post hoc t tests revealed significant group differences in ADL ability at all ages beyond the age of 4. ADL process ability effect sizes were moderate to large at all ages and ADL motor ability effect sizes were mostly moderate to large age 6 and above. In Study IV, the use of the AMPS within the context of a feasibility study based on data of 17 Swiss children with mild disabilities was evaluated. The analyses revealed several strengths and problems that were related to the time, equipment, and materials for administering the AMPS, the adherence to standardized administration procedures, the scope of the AMPS as a test of ADL performance, and the reliable rating by the blinded rater. Conclusion This thesis provided evidence to support the validity of the AMPS measures and scales when used to evaluate quality of ADL task performance of persons from Middle Europe. Additionally, this thesis provided evidence that the international age-normative means of the AMPS are likely applicable to children from Middle Europe. Moreover, the findings supported the sensitivity of the AMPS measures to discriminate between typically-developing children and children with and at risk for mild disabilities. When it comes to implementation of the AMPS in the context of a feasibility study, the findings indicated both strengths and problems in using the AMPS as an outcome measure that need to be considered when planning further studies.

Arbetsterapeuters användning av Basal Kroppskännedom TM för att stärka patienters aktivitetsutförande / Occupational therapists’ use of Basic Body Awareness Therapy to strengthen patients' occupational performanceSporre, Pernilla, Engslätt Jansson, Ingegerd January 2014 (has links)
Activity as a therapeutic medium has been central to the development of the occupational therapy profession by using meaningful and purposeful activities. Occupational therapy is founded on the commitment of activity as essential for health and wellbeing. Despite this, much of the profession has led to the development of interventions that are not activity-based. Basic Body Awareness Therapy (B-BAT) and occupational therapy have several common basic assumptions. Our clinical experience shows the potential of using the B-BAT-principles in occupational therapy. We wanted to explore other occupational therapists’ perceptions of conditions and the value of working with B-BAT-principles to strengthen patients' occupational performance. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 11 informants, strategically selected. The interview material was analyzed and formed three themes: The occupational therapists’ knowledge and performance, Working with self – the human development process, and The Obstacles and Opportunities in the organization. In relation to ergonomic knowledge, informants expressed the view that B-BAT-principles provide further opportunities to see, understand and comprehend patients and use activities as a part of their treatment. Activities are broken down into stages where simple, rhythmic movements are used to catch the meaningfulness. The patient feels and experiences occupational performance in the body. The results of the study describe the use of self as an instrument as a prerequisite for being both in activity and in contact with the patient. That strengthens the possibility of developing a therapeutic alliance.

Occupation-based evaluation and intervention : validity of the assessment of motor and process skills when used with persons with mental retardationKottorp, Anders January 2003 (has links)
The ability to perform everyday life occupations is a critical component in both evaluation and intervention for persons with mental retardation (MR). While the ability to perform personal and instrumental activities of daily living (ADL) has always been important for occupational therapy (OT) practice, there is an absence in OT literature and research with a focus on ADL and persons with MR. The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the validity of the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) for evaluation and intervention of ADL ability for persons with MR. In order to evaluate the evidence of validity of the AMPS ability measures based on relation to level of MR, two groups of participants with MR were evaluated with the AMPS (,#=22; #= 39). The results indicated expected moderate relationships between ADL motor and ADL process ability measures and level of MR, despite different methods used for evaluating level of MR. The results also indicated that the results of the AMPS evaluation could be used to directly describe and measure the consequences in performance of ADL tasks for persons with different levels of MR. The evidence of validity of the AMPS was further examined in a study including participants with different types of developmental disabilities (e.g., MR, cerebral palsy, spina bifida) (#=1724). An application of many-faceted Rasch analysis was used to examine goodness-of-fit of the responses for the tasks, skill items, and participants included in the study. All tasks and all items except one demonstrated acceptable goodness-of-fit to the model on the ADL motor and ADL process scales. An expected proportion of participants demonstrated acceptable goodness-of-fit on the ADL motor scale. On the ADL process scale, a slightly lower proportion of participants than expected demonstrated acceptable goodness-of-fit. The results indicated further that persons with more severe levels of MR and persons with more limited ADL process abilities demonstrated different response patterns across tasks and possibly items. The evidence of validity of the internal structure of the AMPS scales was also evaluated between persons with mild and moderate MR (#=178; #=170). Group specific ADL motor and ADL process skill item hierarchies were generated using many-faceted Rasch analyses and compared. The hierarchies of ADL motor and ADL process skill items remained stable across groups, indicating evidence of validity of the AMPS scales when used to evaluate persons with MR. The results also indicated that although participants with moderate MR demonstrated overall lower mean ADL motor and ADL process ability, they did perform some specific ADL motor and ADL process skills at a similar level as persons with mild MR. Finally, the utility of the AMPS ability measures for detecting change were examined in an intervention study including three female participants with moderate MR. The study was based on a single case design and evaluated the effectiveness of a structured occupational therapy intervention program. Improvements were found for the participants in relation to the implementation of the program, but the pattern of changes were different between the participants and across the dependent variables. ADL process ability was the only variable that improved across all participants. The results supported the ADL process abilities as sensitive measures for detecting changes in ADL ability of persons with MR. In conclusion, the results of these studies contribute to the evidence of validity of the AMPS ability measures and scales, specifically in relation to the evaluation of persons with MR. The finding that an OT program resulted in improved ADL process ability also suggest that the results of the AMPS can be used to plan as well as evaluate outcomes of OT practice. Further research is also suggested in order to improve validity evidence and utility of the AMPS when used with persons with MR. / <p>Diss. (sammanfattning) Umeå : Umeå universitet, 2003</p>

Sensorisk integrationsåtgärd i form av ett sinnesrum för barn med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning, ADHD och/eller autism : En översiktlig litteraturstudie/ “Scoping Review” / Sensory integration intervention as a Multisensory room for children with intellectual disabilities, ADHD and/or autism : A Scoping reviewAndersson, Elin, Andersson, Ebba January 2018 (has links)
Children diagnosed with intellectual disability, ADHD och autism may experience that they have a reduced participation in their social network and the community. These diagnoses have symptoms that may have negative impact on the performance in the daily activities. According to studies, one of the symptoms that has an impact on the occupational performance for these children is the sensory processing of the stimuli in the child’s environment. The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to describe how a multisensory room can be used as an intervention for children with intellectual disabilities, ADHD and/or autism to increase participation. The bachelor thesis was a Scoping Review where 20 articles and chapters from a book was included. Inclusion criteria for the articles was studies about children to the age of 18 years, diagnosed with ADHD and/-or autism, use of a multisensory room and sensory processing in children with ADHD and autism. The articles could be a quantitative-, qualitative-, or systematic review studies. The reference lists of the systematic reviews studies were reviewed to exclude that an article wasn't already reviewed. The articles would be written in Swedish or English, published between 2005 and May 2018, would be available in full text and peer reviewed, The results describes how a multisensory room can be used as an intervention for the population of the bachelor thesis, the effects and how the multisensory room offers different stimuli that can satisfy the child’s sensory needs. This can contribute to a positive effect by increasing the occupational performance and participation. The conclusion is that occupational therapists can use multisensory rooms as an intervention and it can be offered to children with ADHD and autism and it shows a positive effect on their participation in their occupational performance.

Interventioner med hund för personer med demens : En scoping review / Interventions with dogs for persons with dementia : A scoping reviewFäger, Anna Angelica January 2018 (has links)
Background: In dementia people gets affected by different behavioural, psychological, and physical symptoms that affect their ability to participate in activities. Together with these symptoms a decreased motivation may interact on the possibility of occupational performance. Earlier studies indicate a positive effect of animals on wellbeing and occupation performance. Through occupational theory the connection between the experience and possibility to activity are seen as a foundation for everyday activities. Purpose: The aim was to describe interventions with dogs in relation to persons with dementia. Method: Scoping review design, limited to dementia, all ages, and both sex. Inclusion criteria was; not more than sex year old, English, Norwegian, Danish, and Swedish articles. Quantitative, qualitative and grey literature through AMED, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsychINFO, Anthrozoös, and full text by Google Scholar. Exclusion criteria was other types of diseases or injuries, and studies older than sex years. Results: Most common intervention with dog, during treatment of dementia, are dog-assisted activity during a longer treatment period. The interventions are implemented during 30-60 minutes, 2 times a week for 6-12 months through physical, sensory, social and cognitive stimulation. In treatment of dementia interaction with dogs may promote occupational performance through a positive effect on depression and quality of life. Interventions with dogs may reduce the presence and appearance of depression and may promote cognitive ability. They may promote to higher degree individuals with severe dementia, cognitive disability and anxiety. Intervention with dogs may promote participation in daily activities through a decrease of presence of depression. Conclusion: Most common intervention with dogs are dog-assisted activity during a longer treatment period. Interventions with dogs may promote social and physical interaction through cognitive stimulation. Dogs may have a positive influence on depression, and quality of life. The dogs may also have a positive influence on anxiety and activities in daily living and may also promote cognition in severe cognitive limitation, and to a higher degree with severe depression, and dementia.

ANÁLISE DAS CAPACIDADES PERCEPTIVO-MOTORAS, FÍSICAS E COGNITIVAS DE IDOSOS PRATICANTES DE HIDROGINÁSTICA / ANALYSIS OF PERCEPTUAL-MOTOR, PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE CAPABILITIES OF ELDERLY WHO PRACTICE WATER AEROBICSEstivalet, Kátine Marchezan 05 August 2016 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: Ageing is a process that causes organic and functional alterations, compromising elements from perceptual-motive, physical, and cognitive capabilities, that can interfere in the occupational performance of elderly people. However, physical exercises, such as water aerobics, have positive effects in the biological, psychological, and social aspects, especially in the search for an active ageing. OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this study is to analyze the perceptual-motive, physical, and cognitive capabilities, as well as the occupational performance of elderly people who practice water aerobics and the possible correlations between the variables. METHODOLOGY: In order to do that, individuals aged 60 years old or older, associated to the Physical Activities Project for Elderly Water Aerobics , from the Physical Education and Sports Center of the Federal University of Santa Maria, were selected. For the descriptive analysis of data, mean and standard deviation were used, and the correlation of Pearson and Multivariate Analysis were used to identify the correlations between the variables. RESULTS: Through the descriptive analysis of the variables, it was noticed that the simple reaction time for visual stimuli is faster than the auditory stimuli; that the dominant hand presents better fine motor skills and higher manual gripping force; besides the perception of satisfaction being better than the occupational performance itself. In the multivariate analysis, it was noticed a stronger correlation between the elements of precision of arm-hand movement, followed by the correlation between simple reaction time and cognitive functions (attention and concentration). In this study, there was also a significant correlation between the performance and the satisfaction of elderly (r=000.7 and p ≥0,001). The most problematic area of performance was self-care, especially because of the difficulty in functional mobility, and the practice of another physical exercise as active recreation was mentioned as the most important problem-activity in leisure area. CONCLUSION: With this study, it was possible to investigate the behavior of the perceptive-motive capabilities: fine motor skills, reaction time, and peripheral perception; the cognitive capabilities: attention and concentration; the manual gripping-force; besides evaluating the occupational development of elderly who practice water aerobics and the relation between those variables.
