“It’s the lack of control that makes you unsafe…" : A study on preventing harassment and increasing the safety of users who register as a woman on platforms for online dating.

Kindbom, Hannah, Storm, Sara January 2019 (has links)
Media reports that women are exposed to harassment on platforms for online dating and surveys show that women to a greater extent experience harassment on platforms for online dating, more often are sexually harassed online and in a higher extent are upset when being harassed. The purpose of the study is to investigate what functions women believe can affect security and prevent harassment such as stalking and sexual harassment on platforms for online dating. In previous studies there are clear indications that women experience harassment on platforms on online dating and some of these studies resulted in design proposals. It is not clear whether users have been involved in the process of producing these proposals. With inspiration from participative design, where users and designers learn from each other, we wanted to involve female users to explore what they believe affects security and what functions they need in order to create security and prevent harassment.Through interviews and focus groups with women between the age 18-36, we discussed problems, functions, scenarios and solutions. We have been able to identify some elements which affect safety. The result shows, among other things, that some functions that are present in several platforms do not contribute to creating safety. We present findings that we believe can affect safety; trust, integrity and control, third-party verification and transparency. We also present design recommendations for designers and developers of platforms for online dating, which can contribute to increase safety and could prevent harassment on platforms for online dating.

Send me your pretty smile :) Online-Dating in den USA und Deutschland. Kulturelle Unterschiede und Übersetzungsbedarf: Send me your pretty smile :)Online-Dating in den USA und Deutschland. Kulturelle Unterschiede und Übersetzungsbedarf

Thieme, Christina 04 March 2008 (has links)

Karlsson, Hanna January 2015 (has links)
This study investigates how tagging is being used in a new way when members of a Swedish dating site get to tag themselves in an act of self-presentation with the aim of meeting new people. In the study seven members of the dating site Mazily were interviewed about their self-presentation, tagging and identity formation there. The questions concerned how they formed their own tags, but also how they interpret and use other members' tags in their search for a potential partner. I have been using queer theories for this study, in order to find out what kind of norms and structures that lie behind and affect the members' behaviour on the website. My study finds that the interviewed members to a high degree reflect about both their own and other members tagging and self-presentations. Although they spend quite some time trying to analyse other people on the website they have a great sense of understanding that a person may give two very different impressions on the site and offline. Another finding is that although tagging is a very free way to present yourself, there still are structures and norms about gender, sexuality and culture that will affect members actions on the dating site. This is a study in Library and Information Science.

Investigating Categorization Preferences for Online Dating Sites

Morrissette, Scott 01 May 2015 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to determine whether a three-category (3C) system for classifying profiles on online dating sites provides advantages over a two-category (2C) system as decision makers evaluate a long list of profiles. Two groups of single heterosexual or bisexual women ages 20 to 30 reviewed a list of 60 male profiles on simulated online dating sites to choose which profiled man they would most like to learn more about. One group (n = 53) evaluated the profiles using a 2C system; the other group (n = 56) used a 3C system. After making their choice, women in each group took a researcher-developed survey to measure the degree to which they were preference constructors, their cognitive difficulty in making their choice, and their satisfaction with the decision process and with their final choice. It was hypothesized that women in the 3C compared to the 2C condition would have (a) less cognitive difficulty making their decision and (b) greater satisfaction with the decision process and with their final choice, and that (c) being more of a preference constructor would increase any relationship found between the 3C condition and decreasing cognitive difficulty. Survey data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and MANOVA procedures. These tests revealed none of the statistically significant differences between groups that were hypothesized. In particular, the decision task’s cognitive difficulty did not differ between groups even when a variable for preference construction was taken into account. Also, there were no significant differences in satisfaction with the decision process or satisfaction with final choice between the two groups using different categorization systems. The study’s three hypotheses were therefore rejected. Reasons for these results and implications of the study are discussed, and recommendations are made.

"Everything Will Be Okay": Salvation-Based Discourses Utilized by Internet Sugar Daddies

Griffin, Julia 01 January 2019 (has links)
This thesis focuses on a specific subset of online relationships—the sugar daddy and sugar baby relationship, more specifically how a self-proclaimed sugar daddy might market themselves to potential sugar babies. The sugar daddy-sugar baby relationship is an arrangement in which a wealthier man will compensate an attractive girl, usually younger, to provide him romantic, sexual, and/or platonic companionship. This compensation tends to vary, but can include money, gifts, or simply the lavish lifestyle of being around a wealthier partner. A small, yet distinct minority among online sugar daddies consists of those who promise life-changing circumstances for their partners. Dubbed “salvation rhetoric,” this type of language targets women in more vulnerable positions, and offers to them a high-end lifestyle, the knowledge to succeed, emotional betterment, or even spiritual enlightenment. This paper seeks to answer the questions of what kinds of salvation discourses are operating within the sphere of online sugar dating, and what kinds of demographic factors may be affecting any differences in discourses.

So... this is how you look on Tinder : A quantitative study about how young adults in Sweden self-present themselves on Tinder.

Pettersson, Emelie, Lindström, Warat January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyze how young adult self-present themselves on Tinder and the relationship between user’s self-presentation and gender to investigate if there are differences. While there are plenty of research connected to self-presentation and online dating, most of them were conducted on English speaking dating sites. Since Tinder is a location-based application, the aim of this study is to investigate how Swedish users self-present themselves on Tinder. This study also focuses on variables that have not had much attention when it comes to dating environment but is related to self-presentation (social interaction, taste, personality trait etc.). This essay is addressing the following questions:  1. How do young adults self-present on the dating app tinder?  2. Are there gender differences in how tinder user self-present themselves?  To explore and answer the topic, we use a quantitative content analysis approach to examine the photographs, textual description and connections to third party applications in each individual profile. The sample of this study were Tinder users located near Karlstad, Sweden with a approximate range of 161 km. This study analyzed two hundred individual profiles were whereof one hundred are men and respectively women between the age of 18 - 24 as it is the most active age range according to a study conducted in the US. We analyze the variables gaze, dress, social interaction in the photographs. In the textual description the variables hobbies or interests, professions, taste, height, emojis, partner preference and personality trait were analyzed. In the analysis of the results, there were a significant difference between gaze and dress related to gender in the photographs as expected from previous studies. There was surprisingly no significant difference in how men and women present themselves in the textual description although there are difference between them. The analysis and discussion with a reflection to previous study results shows that there is a gendered self-presentation and that gender stereotypes still exists on Tinder. The results serves as a groundwork for future research regarding self-presentation in online dating environment.

Kara, Alexandra Paulina, Olsson, Emelie January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge and understanding of how love can be created in the late modern society. Current studies on this topic shows that society today is more individualized than before, which means that the conditions in order to get successful love relationships has changed. We have adopted new forms of dating which are characterized by the freedom of choice for individuals. The development of technology has led to new opportunities to find intimacy and trust online as a consequence of the modernization. This qualitative thesis is based on interviews with online daters and has been interpreted on the basis of Beck's theories of the risk society, Giddens theories of pure relationship, and Goffman's theories about the dramaturgical perspective. The result shows that there are several risks and dangers with the online dating. The online daters are likely to be disappointed if they go in with too high expectations, they also risk ending up in unsatisfying relationships or being deceived or mislead online by other online daters. However there were strategies to overcome these risks and dangers to find love. Having an open mind and lower the expectations, broaden the range of online daters and simultaneously engage in deep communication to build trust, tended to minimize the risks and dangers that online daters faced when they were searching for love online.

Onlinedejting via lokaliseringsapplikation : En studie om hur mobilapplikationen Badoo används ute på krogen / Onlinedating through people-nearby-application : A study about the usage of the mobile application Badoo out in clubs.

Carvajal, Sandra, Olsson von Koch, Ebba January 2013 (has links)
Online dating and “People nearby applications” (PNA) has become more popular in today’s society. With PNA you can easily find people who are nearby you that you can socialize with and maybe even meet. In this paper we study the mobile application Badoo and explore how it is used for dating in clubs in Stockholm through observations that we participated in. We also had a group interview with five Badoo users about their usage of the application. It turned out that they mostly used Badoo during daytime to socialize with other people. Our observations in this study showed that Badoo is used by some people for dating when out in nightclubs but many people are more likely to use it when they are at home for other types of dates, such as meeting for sexual activities etc, at this time of the day.
