On Trauma, or, How To Bear Witness to the Quiet Violence of Dreams

Shinners, Keely 01 January 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores South African author K Sello Duiker's The Quiet Violence of Dreams (2001) as a narration of personal and national trauma. This narration of trauma, as a disruption of the past in the present, provides insight to an imagination of recursive temporality. Through the temporal insights trauma introduces, it understands a shared history which is outside of modern, linear progression, a history which is always happening, not needing to prove itself but begging to be witnessed. It is this imagination of a collective, recursive history which translates, in the text, towards a decidedly decolonial witnessing.

A experiência do pensamento em Michel Foucault: conversações com o campo educacional / The experience of thought in Michel Foulcault: conversations on the educacional field.

Cintya Regina Ribeiro 30 June 2006 (has links)
The present research aims at outlining the role of thought in Michel Foucalts work so as to highlight aspects which dialogue with certain contemporary educacional issues, mainly the ones that refer to the principles underlying the concepts concerning the sovereignty of the subject and knowledge, namely the main axes that guide the critical theories on education. Under the scenario, the Foucaultian studies on power, resistance as well as subjectivity offer an unique opportunity of problematizing the issues of truth and knowledge, focussing on the experience of the thought of difference. Therefore, this study tries to sustain, from a post-critical perspective, the principle that the focus of the educacional task could shift from working with knowledge to working with thought. From a methodological perspective, this work departed from the genealogy of the conception of language within the work of the author to the subsequent thought of the outside as well as the difference. Such thematic and conceptual axes proved to be essential to the development of the argumentative discussion. Hence, the possible relations between the notions of literary language, madness, death, linguistic being, border, trangression, fold and subjectivity were articulated. In the final considerations, it was stablished that the experience of thought departs from a rich possibility of ethical and political production of existence, thus empowering education with the responsibility of taking care of aesthetics at both the personal and the communal world.

The worker’s contract will include a bonus that will also be a function of the same factor that modifies its outside option, even though this factor does not depend on his effort and the agent is risk-averse. This result contrasts with the classical theory according to which one should only allocate risk to the employee when such contract is necessary to provide incentives for greater effort from the agent. Another conclusion of this paper is that there is a limit to the risk the employee assumes in the optimal contract, i.e., the value of the bonus is an increasing function of the difference of the values of the worker’s outside options between the possible scenarios only until a certain point, after which the size of the bonus is fixed.

From dreams to memories through digital channels

Lindström, Johanna, Nilsson, Marie January 2016 (has links)
This paper examines international tourists information needs before, during and after a visit in the Stockholm archipelago, where the case of analys is based on the collaborative project Stockholm Archipelago. The purpose is to gain a better understanding for the information needs in relation to Stockholm Archipelagos strategies towards digital information that creates value-in-use for the tourist experience in the Stockholm archipelago. The study is based on interviews with international tourists and people within the project Stockholm Archipelago. The study takes a service management-perspective; outside-in to understand customers' needs for information before, during and after a visit to the archipelago. The survey shows that tourists' information needs are the same and that Stockholm Archipelagos digital services supports the needs, but how the tourists want to receive information differs. This is because value-in-use is primarily created through digital channels with user-generated content that is more individualized.

Právní úprava ochrany dřevin / Legal regulation of the protection of woodspecies

Bubeníková, Štěpánka January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with legislation concerning the protection of wood plants. The six chapters contained within attempt to provide a cohesive overview of this topic as a whole. Legislation in this field has undergone major changes in the recent past. The core of the thesis is an overview of the current state of legislation as it concerns wood plants growing outside the forest as enshrined in the Act on Nature and Landscape Protection. The first chapter deals with an introductory definition of what constitutes a wood plant growing outside the forest, as well as its functions. The following chapter outlines the relationship between public and private law aspects of wood plant legislation. The issue of ownership and neighbour s rights is focused on in particular. The next chapter lays out the basics of public law legislation in this field. The fourth chapter is the crux of the thesis as it deals with the protection of wood plants growing outside the forest as enshrined in the Act on Nature and Landscape Protection, especially when it comes to the possibility of felling of wood plants. The closing chapters partially deal with special forms of protection as provided by the Act on Nature and Landscape Protection in connection with other relevant legislation. The thesis also briefly touches on...

Grönberg, Rebecka January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to spread light on Swedish employment officer's view on the possibilities for immigrants from outside the Europe to get a job in Sweden. The study is limited to include immigrants who are covered by the Swedish law SFS 2010:197. They have the rights to take part in work related activities and internship within a year from the day they got their permanent recidence permit. They are being seen as newly arrived from two years after the day they register at a Swedish employment office. A qualitative method has been used and the results are based on four interviews with employment officers at the Swedish employment service Arbetsförmedlingen. The picture given by the employment officers show that the Swedish language is the biggest obstacle, but also the prerequisite to get a job. Highly educated immigrants have bigger chances to get a job with in their profession. Immigrants with no or low education have more difficulties to get a job and more often get low wage-jobs. Work experience is also described as increasing the chances to get a job. The group which has the hardest time finding a job is newly arrived immigrants who are women, and illiterate. Contributions from the society is described as increasing the prerequisite to get a job and keep it. Qualifications acquired in Sweden seems to increase the possibilities to get a job, rather than qualifications acquired outside the EU. If discrimination plays a role is hard to tell since the respondants chose to not get into this subject.

Foucault, le souci des marges

Szanyi, Adam 07 1900 (has links)
». / Michel Foucault’s work is generally divided into three periods: the archaeological period dealing with epistemology, the genealogical one devoted to the analysis of power relations, and the aesthetic period centered on the « cultures of the self » as understood by the Greeks and Romans. Each of these periods is defined by a particular methodology and a constellation of themes that we’ll partly recapitulate in this paper. This overview serves as a preparatory work in order to underline a preoccupation which seems to be constant all throughout his philosophical journey. It’s concerning the « margins »; a question raised at times with regards to the topic of madness and literature, or in relation to the concept of « resistance » and « battle », and finally, through the study of the atypical manners in which one’s self can/should be governed. Thus, our inquiry is essentially articulated around the following questions: « can we attribute a well defined function to the margins in the theoretical framework(s) of Foucault? »; « what are the figures of marginality and how do they interact with the main Foucauldian themes? »; « what are the difficulties proper to the lexicon of marginality which includes notions such as the outside, desubjectivation and heterotopy? ».

BOUNDARIES OF KNOWLEDGE: EXPERTISE AND PROFESSIONALISM IN BRITISH AND POSTCOLONIAL LITERATURE

Herald, Patrick Steven 01 January 2017 (has links)
The social sciences have developed robust bodies of scholarship on expertise and professionalism, yet literary analyses of the two remain comparatively sparse. I address this gap in Boundaries of Knowledge by examining recent Anglophone fiction and showing that expertise and professionalism are central concerns of contemporary authors, both as subject matter in fiction and in their public identities. I argue that the novelists studied use and abuse expertise and professionalism: they critique professions as participant observers, and also borrow the mantle of expert credibility to bolster their own cultural capital while documenting the pitfalls of expertise in their fiction. My first chapter shows how acquired technical knowledge and professionalism are the central concerns of Ian McEwan’s Saturday. In the novel, Henry Perowne’s professionalism is the site from which various ethical and political debates radiate. Perowne—depicted as a rather heroic expert in comparison to the other novels studied in the dissertation—is disturbed by a total outsider in the form of Baxter, a man with no prospects or future, professional or otherwise. McEwan aligns himself more closely with Perowne: in part through extensive research for Saturday, he has developed a reputation as a public figure who straddles the “two cultures” of the sciences and humanities, a reputation that exists in a synergistic relationship with his particular brand of realist fiction, which emphasizes hard work and professional credibility. Next, I demonstrate how Zadie Smith’s On Beauty reveals a deep suspicion of academia, which in the novel serves to cut disciplinary experts off both from the world outside campus and from an appreciation of the subjects they study. Smith’s academic professionals are well-intentioned but unable to look beyond field-specific boundaries to appreciate their objects of study (and unintentionally harm outsiders along the way). Larger issues such as race are always present but at the margins of the interpersonal drama that plays out between the novel’s numerous characters. I read Smith herself as reluctantly accepting academic life, teaching at New York University while maintaining a qualified distance from American academia in articles and interviews. Chapters one and two are broadly about the advantages and drawbacks of expert knowledge, respectively. In my third chapter, Abdulrazak Gurnah offers the most circumspect view of experts yet with a fear of a “summarizing” expert or colonizer of knowledge that is only resolved by the arrival of a more authentic Zanzibari expert. In an analysis of Gurnah’s By the Sea, I show how professional networks--the United Kingdom’s immigration and refugee system, the colonial education system in Zanzibar, and the professoriate--raise questions about who is entitled to and capable of narrating people’s lives. These questions dovetail both with the novel’s shifting narrative form and with the concerns of Gurnah’s own work as a scholar of literature. Beginning with McEwan and ending with Gurnah, Boundaries of Knowledge travels from the most socially and economically secure, elite experts to those left behind by contemporary professionalism. My title reflects this troubled landscape of expert knowledge and professionalism: who knows what, the benefits and drawbacks of the accompanying cultural capital, and the barriers between various fields, sets of knowledge, and finally people.

The Commodification of Queer Virgins in Shakespeare, Spenser, and Keats

Ortega, Laura M 23 February 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to explore selected works from William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, and John Keats, in order to expose textual instances of feminist thought. This analysis was aided with feminist theorists falling under the main strains of queer theory, materialism, and gender performance. Specifically, this thesis focused on the ways in which women, particularly virgin daughters, were viewed as property by their male kin. It also looked at how these women engaged in various symbolic masquerades and/or actual cross-dressing as a response to the aforementioned phenomenon. Finally, the thesis exposed how these masquerades can be construed as a queering of identity—manifested through reversals of power and rejection of patriarchal institutions like marriage.
