The genomics of development rate variation in Cochliomyia macellaria (Diptera: Calliphoridae)

Lewis, Sarah E. 16 July 2018 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Development rate is a quantitative trait that displays significant variation within many species, including Cochliomyia macellaria Meigen (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Calliphorids are a family of dipterans known as blow flies and are commonly used in forensic entomology to estimate the minimum postmortem interval (PMIMIN), given some assumptions are made. In order to dissect the genetic underpinnings of development rate variation in this species, artificial selection for fast and slow development with population-based resequencing was used. The objective of this study is to isolate and characterize genomic regions that are correlated to development rate variation in blow flies. The first approach used known regulatory development genes from Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae) and isolated variants that were associated with development time changes in artificially selected fast and slow development C. macellaria strains. Three variants located in Ras and Eip74EF were associated with fast or slow development in selection strains with a significant change in allele frequency. The second approach involved the comparison of pooled artificially selected fast and slow C. macellaria genomes to investigate the genetic basis of development rate variation. When comparing the fast and slow genomes, 699 sequences were identified that contained 7290 variants with consistent changes in allele frequency. The variants indicated that the genomic regions that are associated with development rate were associated with developmental processes, including regulation of RNA polymerase II activity, and transporter activity, such as protein dimerization. Of the 699 sequences, 69 sequences were related to Achaete-scute complex and 14 were related to Cyp12A7. The identification of the genomic regions that associated with development rates from this study provides an important resource for future studies in identifying potential genetic markers to increase the effectiveness of PMIMIN estimates. By using significantly associated variants as a priori candidates for future studies, the data increases the understanding of natural development variation in blow flies.

Project planning methodology based on lean philosophy and PMBOK guidelines for SMEs in the electricity sector

Bazán, Denisse, Pinedo, Marco, Rojas, José, Raymundo, Carlos 01 January 2020 (has links)
El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado. / Currently, businesses implementing electrical projects lack the theoretical knowledge of ways to correctly develop the projects given that they are based on empirical knowledge. Consequently, a need has developed to implement lean philosophy and project management as distinctive and renowned pillars to ensure high competitiveness in the market of the sector under study. Through case studies, the literature on the subject demonstrated the importance of proper planning based on cost and time pillars. These pillars were analyzed using Ishikawa tools and a problem tree. The following lean tools were chosen: 5S, visual management, and quality circles. These tools and the project management guidelines, specifically the 47 processes published in the 5th edition of the Project Management Body of Knowledge, were applied as a model proposal at a pilot company in which the results of how this combination of solutions reduces delivery times for that organization were compared.

Användningen av beslutsstöd inom perioperativ medicin och intensivvård (PMI) : En fallstudie på Karolinska universitetssjukhuset / Usage of decision support in perioperative and intensive care (PMI) : A case study on Karolinska university hospital

Becic, Alexander, Kvocka, Mihajlo January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to get a better understanding of how hospitals use data and information in conjunction with Business intelligence (BI). That was done by examining a case that was a BI-system which people and technologies of the PMI department in Karolinska university hospital were a part of. The research questions that were supposed to be answered included what distinguished the usage of decision support in the medical processes in PMI. In addition to this the effect the increasing access of data had on the aforementioned processes were also to be examined. The departments that were examined included preoperative care, intensive care unit (ICU) and a translational research platform. This was conducted as a qualitative case study where relevant people who worked in PMI with different roles were to be interviewed. This included a BI architect, anaesthesiologist and unit managers. The empirical data that was created included several semi structured interviews which were the main data source and internal documents that had useful information regarding the departments. The main theoretical framework that was used to analyse the data was a BI framework and work system theories, but other theories regarding BI capabilities were also used. The result that was generated by the study was that all the different parts of the analysed BI-system have to work together in order for the decision support to be as good as possible. The results also showed that the BI capabilities organizational memory and information integration builds the first step towards decision support. Then it is insight creation and presentation/communication that creates the understanding of previous events. Another conclusion was that the increasing amounts of data did not have a major effect on the BI-system or decision support as a whole.

PKI/PMI AND SMART TOKENS IN HEALTHCARE INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Liu, Hailong, Qi, Wenhua, Zhang, Qishan, Wu, Jinpei 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / While healthcare industry is striving to achieve e-health systems for improvements in healthcare quality, cost, and access, privacy and security about medical records should be considered carefully. This paper makes a deep study of Public Key Infrastructures (PKIs) and Privilege Management Infrastructures (PMIs) and how they can secure e-health systems. To access resources, e.g. patient records, both authentication and authorization are needed, so public key certificates and attribute certificates are both required to protect healthcare information. From a typical medical scenario, we see not only static but also dynamic permissions are required. Dynamic authorization maybe the most complex problem in e-health systems.

Peer-mediated interventions for pupils with ASD in mainstream schools : a tool to promote social inclusion

Ezzamel, Nadia January 2016 (has links)
There is increasing interest in the role of peers in facilitating the social interaction of pupils with ASD through Peer-mediated Interventions (PMI). A systematic literature review was conducted to provide an overview of methods used to evaluate the impact of PMI and provide examples of innovative practice. Four databases were searched. Following application of inclusion and exclusion criteria and coding of studies, 10 were included in the final review. The review found that measuring the outcome of PMI at the level of target pupils has been a focus, with less attention given to exploring experiences of participants; impact on peers and implementation of PMI within an educational context. An innovative PMI was implemented within a mainstream primary school to promote the social inclusion of a Year 3 male pupil with ASD, with his class and five peers. Key elements of the PMI included development of the programme with school staff, whole class awareness raising and a small group peer network. The intervention was evaluated through structured playground observations of pupil-peer interaction, interviews with the target pupil and school staff and a peer focus group. Findings indicated that this small-scale PMI had a positive impact at the level of the target pupil and peers. Key factors facilitating the implementation of this intervention within a school context were also identified. A structured dissemination strategy that involved consultation activities with key stakeholders explored the refinement of an ecologically valid and feasible model for delivery in mainstream schools. Future considerations in developing the intervention framework include; refining elements of the programme based on feedback from key stakeholders and trialling the delivery of the intervention by school staff trained in the programme. Implications for Educational Psychologists (EPs) in the development and delivery of the intervention are discussed.

Díaz Obregón, Katiuska Brenda 12 December 2018 (has links)
The present project seeks to take advantage of the opportunity that arises from the unmet demand of technical professionals with quality training in the Lima market, a need that is satisfied through the differentiation strategy to create value in the professional technical training service and include the attributes valued and identified by our target audience in the market study regarding the areas of Technical Nursing, Business Administration and Computing and Information Technology. According to the market study, the estimated demand of NSE C and D students interested in pursuing higher technical studies in 2019 within our target market amounts to 35,243 students, initiating the educational activity with an average of 264 new students in each shift, reaching at the end of the first year a total of 528 students. The initial investment required is S /. 4,616,442.00 soles, of which 65% will be contributed by the partners of the company and the remaining 35% will be obtained through bank financing. The equilibrium point of demand (students per classroom) is 22, so it is estimated that during the first 5 years a VANE of S /. 1,615,286.00 soles, with a TIRE of 32.67% and a recovery period of 4 years and 4 months, which demonstrates the viability, feasibility and profitability of the proposed Project. The use of the PMI standard will ensure the results obtained, reducing the probability of losses for Ciencitec in the investment of the proposed project. / Tesis

Female Blow Fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Arrival Patterns and Consequences for Larval Development on Ephemeral Resources

Mohr, Rachel 2012 May 1900 (has links)
This investigation explored the environmental and physiological factors affecting adult blow fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) arrival and attendance at pig (Sus scrofa domesticus L.) carcasses in Brazos Co, TX in the summer and winter, and validated a new technique for estimating the pre-colonization interval. It also examined how the offspring of said blow flies compensate for adverse developmental conditions such as starvation or the presence of older competitors by determining the function of minimum viable weight, critical weight, and the terminal growth period in Cochliomyia macellaria (F.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Adult blow fly carcass attendance is poorly explained by temperature, wind speed, ambient light intensity, or body size for either winter or summer-active species. Time of day explained approximately 10% in carcass size variation for all four of the most common species. For summer flies, the degree of ovarian development changed significantly from 96%/98% fully developed on day 1 postmortem to 7%/2% fully developed on day 2 postmortem for C. macellaria and Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart) iv respectively. Using the binomial distribution, the minimum postmortem interval was correctly estimated for 4/6 validation tests. Minimum viable weight for C. macellaria was found to be ~ 0.02 g, and was stable under conditions of starvation and simulated competition. Under starvation conditions, time to pupariation was not altered, whereas under simulated competition, growth rate was increased and terminal growth period shortened. Starved flies under simulated competition entered the pupal state ~12 h faster than starved flies without competition, but required ~12 longer to complete development. These effects should be considered when estimating post-colonization intervals.
