A Metrology for Comprehensive Thermoelectric Device Characterization

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Thermoelectric devices (TED's) continue to be an area of high interest in both thermal management and energy harvesting applications. Due to their compact size, reliable performance, and their ability to accomplish sub-ambient cooling, much effort is being focused on optimized methods for characterization and integration of TED's for future applications. Predictive modeling methods can only achieve accurate results with robust input physical parameters, therefore TED characterization methods are critical for future development of the field. Often times, physical properties of TED sub-components are very well known, however the "effective" properties of a TED module can be difficult to measure with certainty. The module-level properties must be included in predictive modeling, since these include electrical and thermal contact resistances which are difficult to analytically derive. A unique characterization method is proposed, which offers the ability to directly measure all device-level physical parameters required for accurate modeling. Among many other unique features, the metrology allows the capability to perform an independent validation of empirical parameters by measuring parasitic heat losses. As support for the accuracy of the measured parameters, the metrology output from an off-the-shelf TED is used in a system-level thermal model to predict and validate observed metrology temperatures. Finally, as an extension to the benefits of this metrology, it is shown that resulting data can be used to empirically validate a device-level dimensionless relationship. The output provides a powerful performance prediction tool, since all physical behavior in a performance domain is captured using a single analytical relationship and can be plotted on a singe graph. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Desenvolvimento de um sistema de condicionamento de ar em escala reduzida utilizando módulos termoelétricos

Maestrelli, Everlise January 2015 (has links)
This work describes the development of a prototype for a cooling system for environments with base on the Peltier effect, for application analogous to air conditioners currently marketed, using thermoelectric modules. The search is motivated by the possibility of conception of a cooling device to obtain a thermal comfort without some disadvantages of commercial air conditioners such as vibration, noise beyond large as can be seen today. Through exploratory research seeks to detail the thermal phenomenon known as the Peltier effect, their characteristics, materials beyond the state of the art review in order to find related studies the proposal. Presents the steps and prototype development details related the mechanics part, electrical and thermal. In a second moment, the prototype is submitted to validation tests that demonstrate the functioning as planned however, with low performance compared with commercial refrigeration equipment. It presents also a comparative analysis through extrapolation between the prototype and air conditioners commercialized allowing the evaluation of possibility and implementation in full-scale application. It concluded that the proposed improvements and new studies for optimization and adjustments in the thermal dynamics can obtain a product technically viable and commercially appropriate.

Solar refrigeration using the Peltier Effect

Swart, JC January 1996 (has links)
Thesis (Master Diploma (Electrical Engineering))--Cape Technikon, Cape Town,1996 / In order to design a coolerbox, utilising Thermo-electric technology as a heat pump, it was necessary to determine if this type of technology would be suitable for a coolerbox heat pump application. A detailed TEC (Thermo Electric Cooler) sizing estimation was done, using formulas supplied by the manufacturer, and using thermo-electric themy formulas to calculate the absolute theoretical performance parameters for a suitable TEe The correct heat pumping capability is important since.it is possible to obtain TEes with different input currents, voltages and heat pumping capabilities. Using the TEC as a heat pump, it was decided to use water cooling due to the extremely high cost of a suitable air cooled heatsink. It should be noted that to cool the hot side of theTEe a vel}' efficient heat exchanger should be used. A simulator was constructed to simulate, under variable operating temperatures and input powers, the cooling capacity of the TEC heat exchanger. The cooling characteristics were then used to determine if the theol}' and manufacturers claims correspond with the cooling characteristics of the coolerbox. It might be possible that the performance of the TEC would be drastically influenced, since installation con~itions may not be ideal when installed; and, that the manufacturers performance claims are done when the TEC is operated under ideal conditions. This would ensure optimum results because, should an under sized TEC be used, the result would be poor cooling characteristics; or, if the TEC is over sized, the coolerbox would consume too much power, resulting in an inefficient system.
