Text in English / The objective of this thesis is to give a description of the theory and practice of theological education in the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa (AFM) from 1908 to 1996 in order to understand the current theory and practice and also to give guidelines for future implementation thereof. This is a literature study using a practical theological method of research. Three of the aspects that governed theological education in the AFM are racial relationships, the tension between spirituality and academic achievement and financial viability. These three aspects were the leitmotiv throughout the study. This study indicates that: * the AFM started as an interracial mission * within two years after its founding the AFM became a segregated church * racially divided theological education was practised throughout all the periods of development * initially, believers entered the pastoral ministry by means of the calling, anointing of the Holy Spirit and proven practical self-involvement in the ministry * the Church now believes that theological education must be added to the experience of the indwelling of the Spirit * there has been a gradual move from a focus on spirituality towards that of higher academic achievements * theological education should be offered at different academic levels and different tracks of ministry * financial support came mainly from the central funds of the Church via statutory funds from local churches * other contributors towards the cost of theological education are the students, donations from the public, churches, organisations, businesses and the state *the transformation of theological education from a predominantly White westernised enterprise to an African endeavour would require that the statutory contribution of the Church towards theological education be doubled. This thesis is a contribution towards the renewal of theological education in the AFM. Por fim, procurou-se delimitar as ações desenvolvidas por esta igreja no sentido de obter sucesso junto ao campo político e os perfis de seus representantes eleitos à Câmara de Vereadores local / The present study aims to understand and analyze historically the insertion of Pentecostal churches in the Brazilian political field as an analysis taking the Church of the Foursquare Gospel in the city of Assis, São Paulo, between 1996 and 2008. In that period, the Foursquare Gospel Church has potten, with the mobilization of its faithful, to elect representatives to the Board of Aldermen Assis in three consecutive legislatures. In a city historically marked by the proximity between Catholicism and the political the entry of evangelicals into politics eventually move to the political disputes of their own religious field. During the study sought to contextualize politically and theologically, the insertion Pentecostal Brazilian religious field, as well as pay attention to administrative and theological characteristics of the Foursquare Gospel Church. Emphasis was placed on the study of the field religious assisense in its relation to the political field and on the establishment of the Church of the Foursquare Gospel in the city of Assis. Finally, it is sought to define the actions developed by this church in order to succeed with the political field and the profiles of their elected representatives to the City Council site

Dentre as diversas hipóteses aventadas no campo das Ciências Sociais para a explicação deste fenômeno, destacam-se, para esta dissertação de mestrado em Linguística: i-) a constituição de um campo simbólico no qual a ética neoliberal de consumo não só ganha legitimidade religiosa como é estimulada ii-) a capacidade de exploração simbólica, por parte de seus líderes, dos problemas cotidianos enfrentados por boa parte da população urbana brasileira. Em face destas hipóteses, protagonizadas pela língua, uma das motivações para o desenvolvimento do presente texto está no fato de que não há, até o momento, estudos detalhados sobre o papel das práticas linguísticas de construção de sentidos próprios a este campo. Por essa razão, nossa investigação tem por objetivo principal delimitar a função e explicar a emergência de mecanismos textuais de construção referencial, as recategorizações metafóricas, no contexto da retórica neopentecostal. Justifica-se a escolha das recategorizações metafóricas através da hipótese de que é este um mecanismo muito eficiente para o ato suasório, possibilitando o emprego de metáforas bíblicas na maneira de compreender as causas, e possíveis soluções, para as adversidades impostas por um cotidiano neoliberal. Tendo em mente estas considerações, a inscrição teórico-metodológica aqui adotada é de crivo sócio-cognitivo, cujo postulado básico refere-se à indissociabilidade entre sociedade e cognição, e de inclinação textual-interativa, cuja premissa básica fundamenta-se em torno de uma relação não especular entre língua e mundo, ensejando um modelo social de cognição na qual o papel da linguagem não é meramente representativo, mas constitutivo. Neste quadro, o corpus analisado é constituído por dez cultos de duas igrejas neopentecostais, sendo cinco da Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD) e cinco da Igreja Internacional da Graça de Deus (IIGD). Para a interpretação dos dados extraídos deste corpus, as recategorizações metafóricas são primeiramente discutidas no contexto religioso da enunciação - relativo, sobretudo, à abordagem dos temas de cada culto - e, em seguida, interpretadas à luz do contexto social mais amplo de composição do neopentecostalismo. Com isso, busca-se mostrar que as recategorizações metafóricas são fundamentais à constituição conceptual dos eixos argumentativos da retórica neopentecostal, aqui tratados sob a forma de "nichos metafóricos", um conjunto de proposições metafóricas superordenadas que permitem estabelecer com maior precisão o direcionamento da argumentação. Por fim, busca-se mostrar que sua singularidade, enquanto uma forma específica de construção de sentidos, permite uma rediscussão de conceitos fundamentais à análise textual-interativa / Abstract: Brazilian neopentecostal churches acquired, over the last years, great relevance and notoriety in the national religious board. Among the various hypotheses suggested in the field of Social Sciences to explain this phenomenon, it will be highlighted for this master's in Linguistics dissertation: i-) the constitution of the symbolic field in which a neoliberal ethics of consumption is not only legitimated but also stimulated; ii-) the capacity of symbolic exploitation, by its leaders, of the quotidian problems faced by most part of the urban Brazilian population. In the face of these hypotheses, where language is the protagonist, one of the motivations for the development of this text lies in the fact that, until now, there is no detailed study on the role of linguistic practices in the construction of the attached senses of their proper symbolic field. For this reason, our investigation has as its main objective to delimitate the function and explain the emergence of textual mechanisms of referential construction, the metaphorical recategorizations, on the context of neopentecostal rhetoric. This choice is justified over the hypothesis that this mechanism is very efficient in the persuasive act, making possible the use of biblical metaphors on the comprehension of the causes, and some possible solutions, to the adversities imposed by a neoliberal quotidian. Keeping these considerations in mind, the theoretical and methodological inscription here adopted is social-cognitive, of which the basic postulate refers to the inseparability between society and cognition, and has textual-interactive inclination, of which the basic premise is founded around a non specular relation between language and the world, giving rise to a social model of cognition in which the role of language is not merely representative, but constitutive. In this frame, the analyzed corpus is composed by ten neopentecostal churches cults: five from the The Universal Church and other five from the International Church of God's Grace. To interpret the data extracted from this corpus, the metaphorical recategorizations are firstly discussed in the religious context of the enunciation - relative, mainly, to the themes' approach in each cult - and, then, interpreted on the light of the larger social context of composition of the neopentecostalism. With that, it is showed that these mechanisms are fundamental to the constitution of the neopentecostal rethoric argumentative axis, here treated under the form of "metaphorical niches", a set of metaphorical superordenated propositions under which is possible to establish with greater precision the argumentative orientation. Finally, it is showed that the metaphorical recategorizations singularity, as a specific form of senses construction, allows a rediscussion over fundamental concepts to the textual-interactive analysis as a whole / Mestrado / Linguistica / Meste em Linguística

This study is based on research carried out in East London, South Africa during the period September 1957 to August 1959 as an Assistant Research Officer of the Institute for Social and Economic Research, Rhodes University. The study is presented in three parts and its theme, broadly speaking, is the role of the church in an urban African society. In Part I, some aspects of the African Church in East London are discussed in general terms and an attempt was made to relate our own material with the findings of other researchers. Emerging from this discussion we have concluded that the Church could potentially play an important part in combating the social disorganization characteristic of urban locations in South Africa, but that on the whole this potential has not been fully exploited.

D.Litt. et Phil. / Pentecostals tend to have a negative view of the Old Testament. Although no official distinction between the Old - and New Testament exists, in practice the Old Testament is regarded as less authoritative than the New Testament. This influences the way worship in the Old Testament is regarded. Pentecostals generally view the New Testament as prescriptive for the worship experience of the Church. This study wants to show that the Old - and New Testament are on equal footing regarding it's authority as the inspired Word of God, also concerning it's teaching on worship. A second problem addressed, is the place of the lament in worship. Pentecostals tend to think that Christians should always be positive and that God should be praised, regardless of the situation. This leads to a denial of the fact that Pentecostals experience pain and negativity and feelings of rage and anger in their lives. They try to hide those feelings from God, which leads to dishonesty in their relationship with Him. Lamenting is regarded as an act of un-faith. On the contrary, this study wants to show that lamenting is an act of bold faith. The psalms teach that we should be completely honest in our relationship with God. We may express all our feelings of negativity and pain and anger and fear and vengeance to God. By doing this, we place it in the hand of a God who cares and understands, a God who transforms us and our situations by the power of his love and grace. Different situations in life call for different types of psalms to be used in worship. Depending on our experience, we can praise or lament or use any of the other types of psalms we find in the book of Psalms. This study focuses on a selection of different types of psalms to ascertain how they can be used in the Pentecostal tradition. The following Gattungen are • discussed: Wisdom psalms, royal psalms, liturgical psalms, psalms of trust, psalms of lament and psalms of praise. The results of the study have shown that the use of the psalms in Pentecostal worship falls within the parameters of the characteristics of Pentecostal hermeneutics. The fact that they are not being used, is contrary to Pentecostal hermeneutics. They can be used in different ways, e.g: in the liturgy of the Church, in the prayer-life of the believer, during pastoral counselling, prophetically and homiletically.

Since the evaluation of sect to non-sect presumably involve a change of values and beliefs of its members, the problem and purpose of this study was to introduce a set of instruments which would adequately measure the values and beliefs of the first generation and the second generation Assembly of God members, and to detect any significant differences of values and beliefs.
