Corpo estranho / Corpo estranho

Xavier, Kelly de Oliveira 26 March 2008 (has links)
This research project, Strange Body, approaches the issues pertinent to my creative process perception and production. Through practical and theorical investigations, dealing with the imagery related to the body, I study aspects I consider important to the understanding of the body as something in constant movement. This conception of the body is related, both visual and conceptually, with its material stratuns, its physical, carnal and organic reality, and has been detached from idealistic models. In the approaching we have adoted, we highlighted texts of authors like Georges Bataille, in philosophy, Hilda Hilst, in literature, and also the writings of brazilian artist Lygia Clark. We will analyze the results that, in terms of speech production and perception, can be obtained from exercises to promote attention to acoustic cues that are relevant for sound discrimination in L2 and can contribute to sound acquisition. The theories that guide this study are the Acoustic Theory of Speech Production (Fant); the speech-learning model developed by Flege, and researches about phonetics applied to pronunciation teaching. Our research consisted in evaluating two subjects in semi-spontaneous tasks reading a monologue and a dialogue and in conducting perception tests for sound discrimination and identification. Based on test results, we developed phonetic training with the instrumental support of phonetic acoustic analysis and technological resources. Finally, the tasks were reapplied to verify the effect of the phonetic training and analyze whether subjects improved their perception and production abilities. According to comparative analyses of the tasks pre and post training, we could verify that both subjects showed improvements in their perception and production tasks.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Javier Eduardo Silveira Luzardo.pdf: 4619161 bytes, checksum: 0dc921bf0e9d47e918bae7090e11379a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-29 / Even though the Spanish language spoken in Montevideo, Uruguay is very similar to other variations of the language, like the one spoken in Argentina, it has specific characteristics, such as a hybrid formation, derived from the flow of different agents within the eastern territory. In the current 62 neighborhoods in the city of Montevideo there are people who in the 21st century still have not had the chance of leaving the eastern territory to know different cultures. This might be the reason for which there is such little variation in the Spanish spoken in the area. The present research was developed by selecting 18 informers from these 62 neighborhoods, and the overall objective of this investigation was to describe and analyze the behavior of the labial and coronal fricative consonants of the Spanish language spoken in the River Plate, as well as the process of fricativization of the labial plosive, under the light of the Linguistic Variation Theory, with particular focus on the phonological dimension of the sound trace in speakers from Montevideo, Uruguay. The central phenomenon of the study was analyzed from the perspective of linguistic production and perception, controlling two social variables: age group - divided into three generational groups, and sex - and structure variables. The corpus was obtained through four types of data collection: an interview, a production test and two perception tests, an identification test and a discrimination test. The results of the tests, both production and perception (identification type) were submitted to the Rbrul statistics program. Regarding the labial forms, the Rbrul analysis showed that, in terms of perception, the lowest percentage was related to the bilabial fricative [β], and there was difficulty in differentiating the forms [b], [β] and [v], which was interpreted as an indication that the tested forms are being processed by the speakers as allophonic variants; As to production, the results corroborate the tendency in Spanish to have fricativization of the plosive labial sound in an intervocalic context. Referring to the palatal coronal fricative forms, the Rbrul analysis showed that, in relation to the production, there is a favoring to the voiceless coronal fricative [], taking the place of the coronal fricative sound /ʒ/; As to perception, the non-vocalized form has obtained predominant results, especially in the younger generations, becoming an indication that there might be a change occurring in the unvoiced form. Generally, the results of the present study lead to the maintenance of the status of allophonic variants for the three labial forms [b], [β] and [v] in the phoneme representation / b /], and the two coronal fricative forms [ʃ] and [ʒ] in the phoneme representation [ʒ]; However, the prevalence of perception and production of the voiceless coronal fricative form [ʃ] may be an indication of the phonologization of this fricative, taking the place of the voiced coronal fricative /ʒ/ in the consonantal system of the Spanish language spoken in the River Plate.

No. of bitstreams: 1 roberta azevedo.pdf: 4361494 bytes, checksum: a7a7c7be42681bad50ad32c286d23da5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-07-11 / The present study approaches the phenomenon of vowel epenthesis in Portuguese from a phonetic-phonological approach. It shows, through empirical data of production and perception of Brazilian and European Portuguese native speakers, that in word-mid contexts of heterosyllabic consonant clusters, which allow for the emergence of epenthesis in Portuguese (“p.n” – apneia, “t.n” – etnia, “k.t” – cacto), the phenomenon of vowel epenthesis is variable. The study also considers the possible existence of a voiceless epenthetic vowel, not commonly identified in the literature, which characterizes the original status of the study, for its instrumental treatment of epenthesis in Portuguese, as a study that combines a traditional, structural description of epenthesis with an acoustic, articulatory and perceptive attention. The instrumental analysis of production data was possible using the PRAAT software (BOERSMA; WEENINK, 2013). This software allowed the examination of the acoustic features of the segments, such as duration and formant frequencies, which made possible the differentiated characterization of epenthetic vowels in relation to lexical vowels. The instrument used to check the perception of epenthesis in Portuguese was designed on the TP software (RAUBER et al., 2009), which helped investigate the relationship between production and perception of epenthesis in Portuguese. Departing from this empirical framework, our aim is to propose a formalization for the vowel epenthesis phenomenon in the bidirectional processing model of L1 - Biphon (BOERSMA (2006, 2007, 2008, 2010) and BOERSMA; HAMANN (2009)). From the formalization of the phenomenon in the bidirectional processing model of L1, we can predict that the difference between Brazilian and European Portuguese is in the phonetic implementation and perception. At the phonological level (lexical), both varieties of Portuguese demonstrate that stop consonants in coda constitute an improper structure in the language. Furthermore, it was observed that the syllable contact is also importante, in a heterosyllabic context formed by stops in medial coda position. It was also possible to demonstrate that perception is phonological in the varieties of portuguese under analysis, because the listeners, identifying a structure with a stop in word-mid coda, identified the presence of an illusory vowel to satisfy the phonotactical restrictions of the language. This situation is formalized in the Biphon model with structure and cue constraints, showing that the perception of an illusory vowel in the output (phonological level) does not maintain the relationship of phoneticphonological faithfulness to the input (phonetic level) – cue constraint >> structure constraint - and, therefore, resorts to the structure constraints to explain this. The present analysis is innovative in using such a model to explain the phenomenon of epenthesis in heterosyllabic mid contexts in varieties of Portuguese, as well as in proposing cue constraints.

The research focused both on the perceptual acquisition and the acquisition of the production of those segments. The corpus of this study was established through the investigation of two groups of Licenciatura em Letras – Português/Inglês students: one composed by first semester students, who had not yet received explicit phonetic-phonological instruction, and another one of third semester students, who had already been exposed to explicit instruction regarding the English phonological inventory. In this research it was understood as explicit instruction the second semester mandatory discipline of Fonética e Fonologia da Língua Inglesa (English Phonetics and Phonology) from the Letras course, which aims at presenting the language phonological inventory and developing the oral reception and production abilities, as well as capacitating future teachers to deal with the phonetic and phonological difficulties native speakers of Portuguese might face in the acquisition of English as a foreign language. In order to verify the process of acquisition of those vocalic segments in this universe of subjects, three tests were developed and applied: (a) a Production Test, which consisted of the reading of minimal pairs of English monosyllables that contained the vowels /æ/ e /ɛ/, in a carrier sentence and (b) two Perception Tests – one of Discrimination and another of Identification. The test results‟ indicate that the segment /æ/ has a late and more complex acquisition than its coronal [+low] counterpart. Such result was then interpreted in the light of the feature theory, supported by Clements‟s (2004) Robustness Theory, according to which there are less robust features in the function of contrasting segments, that is, that promote more fragile oppositions, united with Calabrese‟s (1995) notion of phonological markedness conditions through the co-occurrence of features, combined with a latter proposal of marked features configurations hierarchy (CALABRESE, 2005). From the results herein obtained, it was theorized that there are two possible underlying reasons regarding the difficulty in acquiring /æ/, based on the feature theory. The first one concerns the internal marked configuration of the segment due to the co-occurrence of the features [-low, -back]. The other possible interpretation goes beyond the internal characterization of /æ/ and debates the weakening of this segment‟s opposition to the vowel /ɛ/ due to the loss of robustness of the [low] feature, the only one that differentiates both vowels, through the co-occurrence of the [-back] feature. Both explanations find pertinence in the results obtained in this research.

In the context of teaching and learning the English language for Brazilian learners, it is noted that the educational focus is still centered on grammatical and lexical issues, and the phonic aspect, essential for fluid speech production and no disturbance, is often provided or approached inappropriately in class. This occurs, mainly due to the lack of training and expertise of teachers in relation to the articulatory and acoustic aspects of the student’s mother tongue and his/her foreign language. Considering the various differences between the segmental and prosodic levels and the acoustic and articulatory levels of the two languages, this paper approaches a didactic intervention to improve the English language pronunciation of undergraduate students in Language and Literature in a public university in the state of São Paulo. It also investigates the production of the English vowel sounds /i:/ e /ɪ/ of these students pre and post this intervention by means of an acoustic-phonetic experiment. The nonexistence of the distinction between /i:/ e /ɪ/ in Portuguese may result in difficulties in the perception of these vowel sounds in English, and consequently in their production, contributing to possible intelligibility problems and, in some cases, fossilization for the learners, thus its treatment in the classroom is essential. To conduct a more specific analysis of acquisition and learning sounds of a foreign language, we rely on the concepts of "Phonological Deafness" of Polivanov (1931) and "Phonological Sieve" of Trubetzkoy (1939), and consider the "Speech Learning Model" of Flege (1981, 1991, 1995). In addition, we used the PRAAT platform to aid in the recording and analysis of the learners’ production. Through this study, we hope to provide the necessary knowledge for all parties and others interested in the subject so that they can perceive differences in segmental and prosodic levels between the foreign language and the mother tongue. Moreover, we aim to provide tools for them to reflect deeply about their perception and production of the phonic aspect of the target language. / 164816/2015-1

This research aims to describe the acoustic characteristics of the phonemes /æ, ɛ, ɑ, ɔ, ə/ in the production of English language of Brazilian students of English as a foreign language (EFL). Those phonemes sometimes lack contrast in the production of Brazilian students and are produced within the perceptive space of the phonemes /a/, /ɛ/ and /ɔ/ of Brazilian Portuguese language. The selected participants are students of two language schools who took a course on the sounds of English, designed as part of the experiment developed for the data collection. The experiment consists in recording the oral reading of a corpus containing words with the selected phonemes, which occurs before and after participation in the course, besides the response to two questionnaires, applied at the beginning and at the end of the course. Subsequently, the recordings are analyzed and compared to each other and to a recording of the same corpus by an American informant, using PRAAT software, version 5.3 (BOERSMA & WEENINK, 2011). As a theoretical support for this analysis, we understand that students’ oral production is in their Interlanguage (SELINKER, 1972), in which the strategies used by students in the production of LE sounds can be found. Therefore, for our analysis, theories that specifically focus on the acquisition/learning of the phonic aspect of an LE are fundamental, starting with Trubetzkoy’s phonological sieve (1939) and Polivanov’s phonological deafness (1931). Complementing these concepts, the analysis is guided by the processes explained by models, such as the Speech Learning Model (FLEGE, 1981), the Perceptual Magnet Effect (KUHL & IVERSON, 1995), and the Perceptual Assimilation Model (BEST, 1994). Results show the occurrence of certain phenomena in the Interlanguage of Brazilian students: acoustic proximity of the pair of phonemes /æ/ and /ɛ/; acoustic proximity of the pair of phonemes /ɑ/ and /ɔ/; the production of /ɑ/ close to /a/ motivated by the grapheme <a>; the production of /ɑ/ close to /ɔ/ motivated by the grapheme <o>; the production of /ə/ as /a/ motivated by the grapheme <a>. / CAPES 1601804
