Participation and control experienced during animal-assisted activities by children hospitalised with cancer / Monique Vicky Simon

Simon, Monique Vicky January 2014 (has links)
Children diagnosed and treated for cancer experience a profound life-transformation as they are confronted with unprecedented physical, psychosocial and emotional challenges. Children’s experience of diagnosis and treatment is often accompanied by a lack of participation and reduced control. Extensive research has been conducted on a variety of supportive interventions. Only a limited amount of research, however, has investigated the potential of animal-assisted activities (AAAs) to afford specialised support for the child hospitalised with cancer. Moreover, of this limited research, few studies explore AAAs in relation to participation and control. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe how participation and control are experienced during animal-assisted activities by children hospitalised with cancer. Paediatric oncology patients between the ages of 8 and 14 with any type of cancer were offered the opportunity to participate in the study, which comprised of animal-assisted activities at the facility where patients received their medical care. Five children were included in the final sample. Data were gathered by means of non-participant observations, participant interviews, graphic questionnaires and field notes. Data were then analysed in accordance with steps proposed by Tesch (1990: 142-145), which involved coding according to categories and related themes. Five major themes emerged, including (1) approach to animals, (2) body awareness, (3) level of engagement, (4) level of dependence and (5) communication. Nine sub-themes were derived from data analysis. Under “approach to animals”, the sub-themes were (i) taking the lead, (ii) grooming and affection and (iii) laughter and spontaneity. The sub-themes of “body awareness” were (iv) protection of body and (v) comfort. The sub-themes of “level of engagement” were (vi) initiative and (vii) choice. Finally, the sub-themes of “communication” were (viii) verbal communication and (ix) non-verbal communication. The study provides insight into the participation and control experienced during animal-assisted activities by children hospitalised with cancer. When the initial and final AAA sessions were compared, changes were noted in terms of the children’s approaches to the dog, their body awareness, their level of engagement, their level of dependence and their communication. These changes are associated with an enhanced sense of participation and control, aspects that are often reported to be diminished in children who are diagnosed, treated and hospitalised with cancer. AAAs should therefore be considered an effective means of supporting children hospitalised with cancer. / MA (Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Žmonių, besigydančių nuo priklausomybės ligų, dailės terapijos užsiėmimų patyrimas / The experience of art-therapy courses by people, undergoing addiction treatment program

Mikalauskaitė, Ugnė 16 August 2007 (has links)
Magistriniame darbe taikomas kokybinis fenomenologinis tyrimo metodas, remiantis P.Colaizzi metodologija. Pusiau struktūruoto interviu pagalba apklausti septyni priklausomybės ligų reabilitacijos bendruomenėje besigydantys asmenys. Tyrimas atliekamas tam tikrais etapais. 1) Suformuluojami išankstiniai tyrėjo įsitikinimai; 2) Sukuriamas tyrimo klausimynas; 3) Su kiekvienu tyrimo dalyviu atliekamas pusiau struktūruotas individualus interviu; 4) Visi interviu transkribuojami; 5) Iš kiekvieno interviu protokolo išrenkamos frazės ar sakiniai, kurie tiesiogiai siejasi su tiriamu fenomenu ir, jais remiantis, sudaromas reikšmingų teiginių sąrašas; 6) Kiekvienas reikšmingas teiginys interpretuojamas, atrandant teiginiuose slypinčias prasmes; 7) Organizuojama interpretuotų teiginių visuma bei sudaromas temų sąrašas; 8) Temų sąrašas integruojamas į išsamų tiriamo fenomeno aprašą; 9) Susitinkama su kiekvienu tyrimo dalyviu bei atliekamas tyrimo duomenų verifikavimas; 10) Remiantis tyrimo dalyvių... This is a new investigation field that is very little analysed, so far. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses the conception of the addiction, its varieties, the theory of its origin, and its influence on people. Besides, art therapy is revealed as a possibility of a psychosocial rehabilitation method. The aim of the thesis – to investigate the impact of the art therapy courses on particular people, who are undergoing a special addiction treatment program. A qualitative phenomenological investigation method, based on P. Colaizzi methodology, was applied in the present master thesis. The investigation was carried out in the addict rehabilitation society, when seven persons, who were currently undergoing the treatment program, were involved into the investigation and interviewed by means of a half-structural interview procedure. The investigation was carried out in certain stages:1) the investigator defines his own preconceived assumptions; 2) the questionnaire is arranged; 3) all the participants of the investigation are interviewed personally using a half-structural interview procedure; 4) all the interviews are transcribed; 5) certain phrases and sentences are selected from each interview records that have a direct relationship with a phenomenon under the investigation, then a list of significant statements is... We have, in this sentence, the question for the ontic-ontological character of the Being which we ourselves are, as related to its ontological constitution the oscillation between veiling and unveiling of its being. The question which permeates our research, thus, refers to the privileged way of being which we are, as well as to the rescue of the question for meaning when facing such privilege. What relation has this ontic-ontological privilege of Dasein with this rescue proposed by Heidegger’s phenomenology? How would truth be a fundamental problem in this way? All these questions guide our research which seeks clarification of this obscure sentence asserted by Heidegger in Being and Time, about a truth that inhabits Dasein and of a truth that it is "situated" because it exists. The question for truth is totally related to the fundamental ontology proposed by Heidegger because it is through it that the phenomenologist proposes the rescue of "aletheia" (truth as unveiling, thought by the Greeks) and reaffirms its "anteriority", necessary before the truth thought by traditional molds as a kind of homoiosis. It is through an attention to the pre-phenomenological intuitions of the Greeks that our philosopher reaffirms the scope of philosophy in the face of oblivion of tradition. Aletheia is original truth, it is true that dwells Dasein because it refers us to the event of transcendence that this Being essentially is. It is through this notion that we have the question of sense being reaffirmed, that is, by accompanying what shines so quietly in our being: the inaugural event. We have, by means of the phenomenological method of investigation, the possibility of this shine to reveal itself in a more penetrating way, putting us in the position of seeing originally, that is, since the event of the transcendental. For, as our phenomenologist tells us: the original truth is a transcendental truth. To achieve so, the general objective of this research is: 1) To expose the traditional way of conceiving that which is true in the context of a general science of being; 2) To elucidate how the heritage of tradition denies the character of aletheia (which still appears in Aristotle); 3) Clarify how we have the phenomenological method in Heidegger, being operated through a hermeneutic, that is, a phenomenological attention; 4) To enter the essential determinations of Dasein, through an unbiased look made possible by phenomenological hermeneutics.

For Heidegger, the world can not be understood by all its objects, for they do not make up the world, but only from the world do objects come to be. As a parameter of this analysis, we will adopt a conceptual and argumentative line of passages present in the selected set of the initial texts of the philosopher's work, contemplating, above all, the lessons of Marburg. From which we will argue that phenomenology is that of a philosophical inquiry which, in turn, is only possible through a direct and free access, is, for Heidegger, the hermeneutics of fatigue. In developing hermeneutics as a phenomenological method, Heidegger establishes the Abbau by confronting the conceptual problems inherent in the history of philosophy itself. In this conjecture, we intend to point out the philosopher's confrontation with the methodological problems of Husserl's phenomenology through Heidegger's critical analyzes of Logical Investigations and Ideas I. The research aims to present fundamental elements to understand the trajectory of Heidegger's philosophical project in which refers to the critical appropriation of phenomenological concepts. To this end, the general objective of the present research is: 1) To expose the central aspects that make up and make possible an original description of the structural scope, therefore, of hermeneutics as a phenomenological method. 2) Analyze how this investigative method can be considered a free and direct access to describe such structures. 3) To evaluate how Husserl's phenomenology makes hermeneutic phenomenology feasible.
