Biocultural perspectives on gender, transitions, stress, and immune functionDuBois, Leo Zachary 01 January 2012 (has links)
Health disparities, including higher rates of mental or physical illness, are found among members of minority or marginalized groups including people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. However, there is a paucity of research incorporating both experiential components and measures of physical health, particularly among trans men during their transition from female to male. Trans men transition through the use of testosterone therapy (T) and surgical procedures in order to align their internal male gender identities with their physical presentation. This study combines the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data in order to understand trans men's experience of their changing bodies, identify the primary stressors faced during different stages of transition, and measure the biological manifestation of psychosocial stress during transition. Sixty-five trans men who were utilizing testosterone (T), participated in this cross-sectional study of stress experience during transition. The study involved in-depth, in-person interviews and multiple biological measures including: 24-hours of blood pressure monitoring, three consecutive days of salivary sampling for measures of cortisol and testosterone, a blood-spot for measures of C-reactive protein (CRP), and anthropometric measures. The general hypothesis for this study was that men in earlier, more liminal stages of transition would experience more transition and gender-related stress than men later in the process and that this stress would manifest experientially, psychologically, and physiologically. As expected, transition-specific psychosocial stress was associated with physiological measures, and was more pronounced among trans men in the liminal stages of transition. Moreover, comparisons of stress experience during different stages of transition uncovered variation in how trans men perceived and experienced changes in their bodies and social identity. A number of experiential aspects of transition were identified from the qualitative interviews and found to be linked to physiological stress measures including decreased nocturnal decline in blood pressure, increased cortisol levels, and increased C-reactive protein (CRP). In particular, issues related to transitioning identity stress (TIS), challenges linked to "passing" and being "out" as transgender, and specific acute stressors including the use of gender-specific public restrooms were each found to be independently associated with biological measures of stress.

Using skeletal and material remains respectively, archaeologists and physical anthropologists attempt to reconstruct the lives of past peoples. The combination of these two types of evidence within one discipline is referred to as bioarcheology. Bioarcheology includes studies in palaeodemography and palaeopathology, as well as exploring theories of mortuary behavior, lifestyle and activity, violence and interpersonal activity, and technology. This thesis contains a brief history of bioarcheology, followed by how it can be used worldwide to explore what we can discover about past populations and their culture by studying their skeletal and archaeological remains, specifically through palaeopathology. Topics covered include acquired skeletal pathologies, congenital diseases, infectious diseases, dental diseases, metabolic and endocrine diseases, and nutrition. The thesis also includes analysis of case studies conducted using a bioarcheological approach and specifically addresses why it is important for archaeologists and physical anthropologists to work together and unite bioarcheology. The ultimate objective of this thesis is to demonstrate that bioarcheology can assist in filling a void between physical anthropology and archaeology.

Cross-Cultural Musical Diversity and Implications for its Use in Studying Human MigrationRzeszutek, Tom I. 10 1900 (has links)
<p>Music is greatly underappreciated in the scope of cross-cultural analysis. This is due in part to methodological problems plaguing recent comparative approaches, and modern ethnomusicology’s stance against cross-cultural analysis. Language, on the other hand, has a long history of cross-cultural study and recent advances in quantitative techniques, borrowed mostly from biology, have put language at the forefront of studying population prehistory from a cultural perspective. Chapter 2 of this thesis presents a novel quantitative approach to studying cross-cultural musical diversity based on the AMOVA methodology borrowed from population genetics. This method allows researchers to quantify the amount of variability found between as well as within populations, and gives us a measure of population-level divergence that accounts for intra-population variability. Our major finding is that the vast majority of musical variability (~98%) is found within populations rather than between. This approach solves many of the quantitative issues with the original Cantometrics approach, and is widely applicable to the analysis of many domains of culture. Aside from methodological issues a major open question is whether music has the requisite time-depth to answer questions about recent human pre-history. Chapter 3 focuses on addressing this question generally, and more specifically investigating which musical features trace population history most effectively. Using a corpus of songs from 9 Taiwanese aboriginal tribes and quantitative methods from chapter 2, we show that features related to song structure are correlated with mitochondrial DNA data from the same populations, while features of singing style are not. Both the quantitative methods and provisional support for music’s time depth presented here will hopefully usher in a new era of comparative musicology and provide scholars of pre-history with an additional tool to answer unresolved questions.</p> / Master of Science (MSc)

Bioarchaeological Analysis of Trauma in a Skeletal Sample from Smith's Knoll Historic CemeteryLockau, Laura 10 1900 (has links)
<p>The Smith’s Knoll collection is composed of the disarticulated, fragmentary, and commingled remains of battle dead from the War of 1812. Historical and archaeological context of this site can be well established, making it particularly valuable in helping to unveil the conditions experienced by individuals in the past. In this thesis, the Smith’s Knoll collection was analyzed for evidence of postcranial perimortem traumatic skeletal lesions. Further context for these injuries was provided through comparison with contemporaneous skeletal and surgical collections, historical documentary sources, and other bioarchaeological studies on violence and warfare in the past.</p> <p>Injuries associated with fractures, sharp force, and musket trauma were observed in the postcranial elements of the collection. Although the overall prevalence of lesions is low, the majority of observed lesions can be attributed to sharp force trauma. Sharp force injuries are present in fourteen of the ribs as well as one fibula, one femur, one carpal, one vertebra, and one ulna. Musket injuries are present in three innominates and one scapula, and perimortem fractures are present in one rib and one scapula. The sharp force injuries can be further differentiated into those most likely caused by the bayonet, found in the torso, and those most likely caused by the sword, found in the extremities. Musket trauma is present in the form of impact from both musket balls and buckshot. Importantly, this is the first study to identify buckshot lesions on archaeological skeletal material.</p> <p>The results of the analysis of Smith’s Knoll demonstrate the value of examining postcranial lesions in relation to violence in the past, which has frequently been overlooked in bioarchaeology. As well, this collection illustrates that fragmented, disarticulated, and commingled collections, despite their limitations, have much to contribute to knowledge of interpersonal violent conflicts, both in prehistory and in the more recent past.</p> / Master of Arts (MA)

<p>Carbon and nitrogen isotope values in sequential segments of human hair keratin provide an archive of temporal fluctuations in isotopic composition close to the time of an individual’s death. By combining stable isotope analysis with a microscopic examination of hair, this thesis explores health status prior to the death of early settlers from St. Thomas’ Anglican Church cemetery in Belleville, Ontario (1821-1874). The purpose of this thesis is to determine if there is a consistent difference in carbon and nitrogen isotopic signatures along sequentially segmented hair in individuals who have observable pathological conditions versus individuals who display no osteological evidence of pathology. Elevated nitrogen values can be associated with physiological stressors such as chronic illness, infection, or injury that affect an individual’s metabolic state. Elevated nitrogen values represent a recycling of nitrogen derived from the breakdown of existing proteins in the body and subsequent tissue repair. Results from 10 individuals indicate that δ<sup>15</sup>N values increase greater than 1‰ if an individual was suffering from a pathological condition (e.g., periostitis) or decrease by 1‰ if an individual was possibly pregnant, while δ<sup>13</sup>C values remained relatively constant. The variability in nitrogen values over 1‰, coinciding with less change in δ<sup>13</sup>C values, may be indicative of physiological stress. These results suggest that δ<sup>15</sup>N values are not only useful for studying diet, but may also be used as indicators of physiological stress.</p> / Master of Arts (MA)

Examining Mortality Patterns in the Epidemic Emergence of Poliomyelitis in Southern Ontario, Canada (1900-1937)Battles, Heather T. 10 1900 (has links)
<p>This thesis examines patterns in poliomyelitis mortality in Wentworth and York Counties of southern Ontario, Canada, from 1900 to 1937. This period marked polio’s shift from endemic to epidemic status. It was also a time of shifting social, cultural, demographic, and economic patterns. Contemporaries struggled to understand polio’s epidemiology, and even today, with the poliovirus on the verge of global eradication, models to explain its changing patterns and impact continue to be revised.</p> <p>This thesis uses both qualitative and quantitative data collected from a variety of archival sources, including death, birth, and marriage registrations, census records, and newspaper articles, among other records. This information was used to build a geodatabase which forms the basis for analyses of mortality patterns in relation to age and sex, illness duration, seasonality, nativity, birthplace, ethnicity, and religion. Further analyses included family size, birth order, socioeconomic status, and place of residence patterns.</p> <p>Examined in the context of Wentworth and York Counties in the early 20<sup>th</sup> century, the results both reveal a local pattern to polio’s epidemic emergence and provide a means to test broader hypotheses regarding polio’s epidemiological patterns. Specifically, results from this study were compared to the expectations of the intensive-exposure and cross-sex transmission hypotheses proposed by Nielsen and colleagues. Among the most important contributions of this thesis are the results showing a pattern of change over the study period, with two distinct stages. Stage One (1910 to 1927) is characterized by an equal sex ratio and a median known family size of four. Stage Two (1928 to 1937) is characterized by excess male deaths and a median known family size of two. These results link polio mortality patterns to demographic and ecological shifts in the early 20<sup>th</sup> century and confirm that there is still much to learn from the history of this disease.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Mammoth phylogeography south of the ice: large-scale sequencing of degraded DNA from temperate depositsEnk, Jacob M. 04 1900 (has links)
<p>Mammoths (<em>Mammuthus</em>) have been studied extensively at the genetic level. However due to both taphonomic and technological limitations, only one of several late Pleistocene mammoth species, the woolly mammoth (<em>M. primigenius</em>), has been investigated. This limits our impression of mammoth population history to the the northern latitudes, just one of several environments in which mammoths lived and went extinct. It also obscures their evolutionary chronology, which prevents proper climatic and biogeographic contextualization of their history. Fortunately recent technological advances in high-throughput sequencing and targeted enrichment promise to expand Pleistocene faunal population phylogeography to non-permafrost, non-cave burial contexts. However the capacity and behavior of these combined technologies for characterizing ancient DNA is largely unexplored, preventing efficient and routine use for population-level studies. In this thesis I test and apply these technologies to remains of mammoth species from throughout North America. I first demonstrate their potential for poorly-preserved DNA, and then I evaluate their efficient application to large sample sets, as well as for capturing complete nuclear genomes. I then use these technologies to sequence dozens of mitochondrial genomes from Columbian (<em>M. columbi</em>)<em> </em>and other non-woolly mammoths, reconstructing their matrilineal phylogeography south of the ice. The revealed patterns not only imply a deep chronology for mammoth matrilineal diversity, but also that North American mammoth evolution was occurred via separate episodes of interbreeding between resident and invading populations, and between ecotypes. Overall the biological and methodological discoveries afforded by this body of work outline future research avenues on mammoth evolution, behavior, and extinction.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Dietary Adaptations and Intra- and Interspecific Variation in Dental Occlusal Shape in Hominin and Non-hominin PrimatesO'Neill, Kelsey 01 January 2016 (has links)
Dental morphology and tooth shape have been used to recreate the
dietary adaptations for extinct species, and thus dental variation can provide
information on the relationship between fossil species and their
paleoenvironments. Variation in living species with known behaviors can provide
a baseline for interpreting morphology, and behavior, in the fossil record.
Tooth occlusal surface outlines in hominins and non-hominin primates, and other
mammals, have been used for assessments of taxonomic significance, with
variability often considered as being primarily phylogenetic. Few studies have
attempted to assess how diet might influence the pattern of variability in closely
related species. Here the occlusal surface shape variability in anterior and postcanine
maxillary dentition in primates is measured to assess whether the
relationship between diet and variability is consistent.
Data were collected from five non-hominin primates in a range of dietary
categories, as well as two hominin species, including the derived Paranthropus
robustus and a gracile australopith. Mapping a series of 50 sliding semilandmarks
based on 2-D photographs using tpsDig software, occlusal surfaces
were outlined. Thereafter, outline shapes were quantified using Elliptical Fourier
Functional Analysis, and principle components and multivariate analyses were
preformed to explore the pattern of intra and interspecific variability in occlusal
outlines.These results suggest that there is not a clear relationship between dietary
feeding adaptations for all categories examined and selection for larger
premolars and molars, as well as smaller incisors, led to less variation in both
anterior and post-canine teeth of the fossil hominin Paranthropus robustus.

The estimation of Japanese and Native American ancestry using dental metric measurements and morphological trait frequenciesGreen, Madelyn K. 12 June 2019 (has links)
Ancestry assessments in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology are best analyzed with population-specific methods. Through population-specific ancestry methods, the generalized Native American/Asian ancestry category can be better refined to reflect the diversity of Native American and Asiatic people. Individuals from modern (~1900 to present) Seminole Native American and Japanese populations, housed at The Ohio State University and Jikei University in Tokyo, respectively, reflect a relatively unbiased population sample, as demographics range from juveniles to adults, with both sexes being equally represented. This broad sampling of individuals from the Florida Seminole group and the greater Tokyo region enables researchers to explore the degree of variation between the Seminole and Japanese groups, as can be demonstrated osteologically. Dentitions are an ideal candidate to measure intra-population variability due to heritabilities of both their tooth size and dental morphological characteristics within populations. In an attempt to better understand the variation between Native American and Asian populations, observations of Seminole and Japanese-specific dental morphology and tooth dimensions were recorded from 281 individuals using the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System (ASUDAS) and mesiodistal and buccolingual measurements, respectively.
Significant differences, indicated by a p-value ≤ 0.05, were identified between the Seminole and Japanese groups in the analysis of morphological dental traits and odontometrics. Nineteen statistically significant morphological traits that differed in expression between the two sampled groups were identified, with eight traits being more present in the Seminole group than the Japanese group, whereas eleven traits being more present in the Japanese group than the Seminole group. Linear regression (LRA) and discriminant function analyses equations were developed from three sets of odontometric datasets; the raw, unaltered collected data, the general measurement mean dataset which supplements missing variables, and the ancestry-specific measurement mean data set which supplements missing variables. Both the linear regression and discriminant function models demonstrated success in classifying the Seminole and Japanese groups. The LRA equations presented classification rates higher than chance (81.5-90.4%). Twenty-three DFA equations were developed, ranging in successful classification rates of 61.5% to 100.0%. The ancestry-specific measurement mean dataset performed the best in both the LRA and DFA models.
The results of this study indicate that morphological trait observations and odontometric analyses can be useful tools in the differentiation of Native American and Asian populations, as differences between subgroups of these populations (Seminole and Japanese) were identified. These differences are likely due to the homogeneous and insular composition of both sampled populations. Further analysis of the statistically significant morphological traits identified in the current study and continued testing of more subpopulations of Native American and Asian populations will not only aid in ancestry estimations in forensic and bioarchaeology research, but also in the cessation of grouping Native American and Asian individuals under one category.
