Contributing to the sustainable development within the proposal to use natural systems of low cost, in order to promote a clean and biological alternative, to know the physicochemical parameters that can influence the development of floating aquatic macrophytes is essential in the dynamics of these plants in the environment or in Artificial means. The objective of this work was based on the potential of three species of floating aquatic macrophytes Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes and Salvinia auriculata in removing the chemical elements from Wastewater. The research work was carried out in a greenhouse at Experimental Lageado Farm, belonging to the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences - FCA, Campus Botucatu / UNESP, located in the municipality of Botucatu, Sao Paulo State, latitude 22º 51'S, longitude 48º 26'W Grw, And altitude of 740 m in a greenhouse of polypropylene. Two experiments were carried out in a completely randomized experimental design, composed of the control (only wastewater without plants) and three floating aquatic macrophyte species: Eichhornia crassipes (Aguapé), Pistia stratiotes (Lettuce) and Salvinia auriculata (Salvinia) cultivated in wastewater. Leachate treatment and anaerobic digestion using aquatic plants and algae

Ström, Emma January 2010 (has links)

Phytoremediation as a way to control and lessen nutrient concentrations in landfill leachate is a cheap and environmentally sustainable method. Accumulated nutrients in the plants can then be removed by harvesting and anaerobically digesting the biomass. This study presents two aquatic plants (L. minor (L.) and P. stratiotes (L.)) and one microalgae species (C. vulgaris (L.)), their capacities for growth and nutrient removal in leachate from Häradsudden landfill, Sweden, are investigated. The biogas potential of the two plants is determined via anaerobic digestion in a batch run, followed by a lab-scale reactor run for L. minor only. Results show that growth in leachate directly from the landfill is not possible for the selected species, but at a leachate dilution of 50% or more. Nutrients are removed in leachates with plants to a higher extent than in leachates without, yet the actual amounts do not differ notably between plant species. L. minor proves a better choice than P. stratiotes despite this as growth is superior for L. minor under the experimental conditions of this study. Considering biogas production, L. minor gives more methane than P. stratiotes according to the results from the batch run. The former is however not suitable for large-scale anaerobic digestion unless as an additional feedstock due to practical cultivation issues.

Effects of Anthropogenic Nutrient Enrichment on Exotic and Restored Native Aquatic Vegetation

Parnell, Allison 2011 May 1900 (has links)
Understanding how nutrient input into coastal wetlands influences aquatic vegetation and the fate of anthropogenic nutrient inputs can help improve water quality management plans. The goals of this study were to (1) compare nutrient concentrations in various storage compartments downstream from two point nutrient sources (a sewage treatment plant outfall and a residential detention basin) in Armand Bayou, a coastal brackish wetland in the Galveston Bay (Texas, USA) watershed, and (2) determine if nutrient storage in those compartments helped improve water quality downstream. Water column nutrients can be assimilated by aquatic vegetation, adsorbed to sediment, or diluted within the system as distance from source input increases. To determine the fate of nutrients to Armand Bayou, I measured nutrient concentrations in the sediment, water column, pore water, and tissue of exotic and restored native plants downstream from a sewage treatment plant and a residential detention basin. To assess nutrient removal potential of a common exotic species, I determined relative growth and nutrient uptake rates of Eichhornia crassipes. Water column total nitrogen, NH₄⁺ and NO₃ˉ concentrations decreased by 95, 96 and 99 percent downstream from the sewage outfall (~2200 m distance). Water column NH₄⁺ and NO₂ˉ concentrations decreased by 93 and 75 percent downstream from the detention basin (~2500 m distance). Exotic species Alternanthera philoxeroides, Pistia stratiotes and E. crassipes showed higher aboveground/emergent tissue nutrient content than restored, native Schoenoplectus californicus for both tributaries. Schoenoplectus californicus had the largest biomass although appeared to be limited in its ability to remove nitrogen from the water column. Nutrient uptake rates by E. crassipes were low and did not change with increasing distance from nutrient source, but high relative growth rates in both tributaries suggest the nuisance potential of this exotic species. Low sediment and pore water nutrient concentrations for both tributaries suggest these compartments are not sinks. All plant species did not respond to changes in water column nutrient concentrations with increasing distance from source input suggesting dilution to be the main factor in water column nutrient decline for both tributaries. This study will provide water quality resource managers guidance on the development of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) for water bodies impaired by high nutrient loading and the implementation of wetland plants efficient in nutrient removal for water quality improvement.

The bioaccumulation mechanism were applied to understand the metal uptake by the autochthonous free floating Pistia, common in ponds and shallow lakes from southern Brazilian states from a hydroponics solution. The experiment was performed using several healthy acclimatized plants Pistia Stratiotes. For the metal uptake, aquatic plants were grown in plastic containers containing 5 L test liquids and 2 mg L-1 of into a greenhouse for 35 days. Twenty one replicates were used for metal treatment. Only healthy acclimatized plants of a uniform size and weight were selected for experimental purposes. Approximately 30 g wet weights of Pistia stratiotes were put into aqueous solution. The room temperature and pH were daily measured and deionized water was adding to compensate for water losses. Seven collections were carried out during five weeks which both plants and test liquids were collected from three replicate containers of each metal treatment. The plant wet weight was measured before the experiment and after the each collection. Plants were oven-dried at 80°C for 72 hours and weighted reducing their mass around 94 %, and then they were grinded and digested by acid attack. A Gallium internal standard was added to an aliquot of water or digested plant. An aliquot of 5µL was deposited on a pre-cleaned acrylic disk (ø30 mm, 3 mm thick) and dried at room temperature. Blank control samples containing de-ionized water and all reagents used in the experiment were prepared by the same procedure. Metal concentrations on dried weight plants and cultivation water were measured using the SR-TXRF. The data from the lead bioaccumulation experiment using living Pistia stratiotes have been represented by the irreversible Langmuir, reversible Langmuir, first order and second order models. The maximum capacity of lead removal (qmax ) and the kinetic constant of lead bioaccumulation (k) were the adjustable parameters. The model that described in more appropriate way the bioacumulação was of the kinetic of the reversible Langmuir, presenting a qmax of 0,21 mg g-1 and k of 0,69 L mg-1 d-1, what it demonstrates a good removal of Pb+2 to the long one of the time.

For this we present the case study in a unit of Valley Fertilizer in the city of Cajati in the state of Sao Paulo. The technical feasibility analysis builds on the results of the analysis performed on the biomass composition, in search of the collection system and preparation, the calculations made to find productivity, such as biomass can be consumed and the study of the efficiency of industrial furnace the case. To demonstrate the economic feasibility, this study uses the classical model of economic engineering with the observation of rates and charges such as: Minimum Rate of Appeal (EBA), Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Recovery Period Capital Investment (Payback) and Sensitivity Analysis. It was observed on the technical results that the characteristics of the biomass of water lettuce help in the steps of ignition and combustion of fuel, however this biomass has a low net calorific value for use without mixing fuel in industrial furnaces. The economic results were positive in the biomass, and the project was consistent and rapid recovery of invested capital. This case study demonstrates that the study of the use of water lettuce biomass as fuel solid to industrial furnace is technically and economically feasible. And beyond this, shows that such studies should be developed in the quest to diversify sources of energy through renewable energy.

RODRÍGUEZ VALENCIA, NELSON 02 April 2009 (has links)
