Ambivalence in poetry : Zhu Shuzhen of the Song DynastyChan, Kar Yue January 2006 (has links)
Many people in the past praised Chinese literature partly because of the glamour revealed in splendid poetry, and in creating these poetry male poets have proved their excellence. Conversely the contributions of women poets have seemed much less significant in the history of traditional Chinese literature. Among the relatively small number of famous women poets in China, Zhu Shuzhen (11357-1180?) is certainly worthy of discussion, but she has not received much critical attention, in part because of the lack of reliable biographical information. Although some of Zhu Shuzhen's poems have been seen by some scholars as disgraceful, it is nevertheless valuable to explore the inner world and poetic indications of the voice projected from the poems in an objective way. However, as the number of poems attributed to Zhu Shuzhen is large, despite living under an atmosphere that discouraged the writing of poetry by women, her name is undoubtedly significant in the development of female poetry. Western theories of gender representation and the development of self in literature have been used as the main sources and frameworks for research in this thesis. The aesthetic values in Zhu Shuzhen's original verse have been retained through my translations by selecting the best appropriate original versions in different editions. Comparisons between Zhu Shuzhen and Yu Xuanji fa, (8447-868?), a woman poet in the Tang Dynasty, reveal similarities and differences which distinguish the two in terms of their resistance to the code that cast women as inferior. This thesis will analyse Zhu Shuzhen's ambivalent mind as revealed in her poetry through her contradictory statements, ideas and images regarding the notion of being a good wife on the one hand, and, on the other hand, of a woman suspected of conducting an extramarital affair.

Secularization and the British Lyric in the Twentieth CenturyStevens, Jeremy January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation considers how twentieth century British lyric poets, in continuing the traditional relationship between religion and poetry, respond to changing expectations and assumptions about poetry’s role and power—changes directly related to ongoing social processes of secularization. By combining recent critical insights from secularization theory and lyric theory with close readings of poems, essays, and letters from British poets, this dissertation shows that due to social changes that cohere around World War I, poets like Wilfred Owen, Mary Borden, and David Jones confront an unsettling of traditional strategies of lyric enchantment. This unsettling both imperils the legitimacy of lyric poetics and opens new opportunities. Poets such as Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, and H.D. subsequently engage in strategies of deliberate re-enchantment to justify wide-ranging vocations, while the later Eliot, David Jones, and Elizabeth Jennings confront the limits of re-enchantment but still imagine the poetic vocation as connected to religion. In every case, this dissertation shows that lyric re-enchantment (as a distillation of the aesthetic itself) is fundamentally ambiguous; it is necessarily secular and immanent, yet it continues to imply a transcendence that can easily be put to religious or even supernatural ends. The lyric is thus a genre that uniquely registers the opportunities and challenges for the aesthetic in a secular age.

En raison de circonstances historiques et sociales difficiles, la littérature haïtienne s'est enfermée pendant environ un siècle dans le patriotisme et le nationalisme. Rejet de l'indépendance par les nations occidentales, affaires judiciaires et diplomatiques louches, instabilités politiques et sociales ont marqué tout le XIXe siècle haïtien. A la fin du siècle, une nouvelle génération d'écrivains a opté pour la rénovation en proscrivant la matière nationale, notamment la veine nationaliste, et s'est tournée vers l'universalisme. Il s'en est suivi un remaniement de la pensée ou de la vision haïtienne dont les répercussions se feront ressentir même dans les relations internationales avec les nations autrefois vues de très mauvais oeil. Haïti cherche, et Etzer Vilaire notamment s'y attachera avec une inépuisable énergie, ses racines latines au rejet et parfois au refus même de ses racines africaines. / Haitian literature locked itself for almost a century in patriotism and nationalism for socio-historical reasons. The rejection of her independence by the West, questionable judicial and diplomatic transactions, social and political instabilities all characterized 19th century Haiti. At the end of the 19th century a new generation of writers opted for reinvention, advocating a shift from national affairs, most especially the nationalist trend. They turned towards universalism. Consequently, a total reshuffle of Haitian thinking and vision followed and the repercussions of this will be felt in areas of international relations with nations which at one point were not considered friends. Haiti in search of her roots, as Etzer Vilaire specifically clings on to the Latin roots while rejecting and at times denying its African roots.
