The Political Ecology of Green Hydrogen from the global South : An analysis along the socioecological fix framework / Den gröna vätgasens politiska ekologi sett från det globala sydRischer, Maximilian January 2023 (has links)
Infrastructural projects to realize the energy transition are framed by governmentsfrom all around the world very positively. This is also the case for green hydrogen, which is considered as a silver bullet to solve multiple crises simultaneously. ThisMaster thesis explores the drivers behind the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy inthe global South and elaborates on socio-economic and ecological implications ofgreen hydrogen production projects to analyse the truthfulness of the positivenarratives of the benefits of green hydrogen. To accomplish this, an internationalgreen hydrogen project led by the German-British company Hyphen and planned tobe established in Namibia, was used as an emblematic case study. Following the framework of the socioecological fix, the findings strongly indicatethat green hydrogen does not significantly contribute in solving the climate crisis andsocial problems. Contrarily, strongly influenced by domestic and internationalpolitics, the project in Namibia seems to primarily fix the crisis of capitalism, which isthe overaccumulation of capital that requires new ways of circulation to makecapitalism renew itself. By commodifying and integrating natural resources in globalvalue chains, the Namibian society is disadvantaged, and few actors, primarily fromabroad, profit. Similarly, the finance approach of the project pushes Namibia intopotential financial dependencies. Besides that, the legacy from German colonialismand South African occupation before liberation is manifested in where and how theinfrastructure of hydrogen production is envisioned and planned. There is a risk thatthe hegemonies of elite social classes sustain their position and that social inequalitiesmight be reinforced through a project heralded as benefitting the whole nation. By assessing the political ecology of green hydrogen, I contribute to a critical researchagenda, that considers global inequalities, colonial histories, and ideologies. This willhopefully help to build a foundation for a truly decolonial and just energy transition, all around the world.

Political Dimensions of Climate Change Adaptation : Framing Financial Attributes in Pakistan / Klimatanpassningens politiska dimensioner : Inramning av finansiella attribut i PakistanSherazi, Anusha Batool January 2020 (has links)
The interest towards climate change adaptation has gradually increased from local tointernational levels around the globe. This is one reason that there is less than the dueattention paid previously, on its implementation, besides relatively lower levels offunding available for the adaptation related activities. To elaborate on the trickyrelationship between adaptation funding and policy priorities in the global South, thisthesis focuses on the case of Pakistan. Pakistan is one of the most climate changesprone countries with several events of climate change related disasters taking place onan annual basis. However, there is an extremely weak mechanism of climate changeadaptation that could help the vulnerable communities to resist the disaster impacts. The respective study findings suggest that the primary cause of this issue is the lack ofan effective climate change policy. The existing National Climate Change Policy ofPakistan (NCCP), is not a living document at this point, that can address the climatechange adaptation issues. The existing policy was not only drafted by the fundingagencies themselves, who enabled the formulation of the policy, but it was alsoproposed before the 18th constitutional amendment in the country, which producedsignificant changes. Since the 18th amendment (2010), the implementation of theadaptation policy has been affected due to the change in administrative power andauthority levels, from national to provincial. Another important aspect which isassociated with the adaptation of climate change is the politics behind the funding thatmay enter the country from international sources. The national policy does not provideany comprehensive guideline for the funding agencies regarding the adaptationpriorities, vulnerability and adaptive capacity of the locals, or the organization of funds atvarious scales. This leads the international funding agencies to lose their trust in thegovernment; and lead these agencies to set up their own channels for enabling thefunds to implement the projects on climate change adaptation or mitigation. Similarly, the lack of interest for the national government towards adaptation activities furtherdeviates the flow of funds into adaptation actions, and the focus remains overmitigation. This master’s thesis adopted the in-depth case study research strategy, andsemi structured interviews were conducted with 23 climate change experts, including2but not limited to policy makers and international organizations staff. The results of thestudy were organized in four major focused areas including, a) priorities in adaptation,b) actors of adaptation, c) question of scales, and d) vulnerability and adaptive capacityof the affected communities. This study concludes that climate change adaptation is aneglected topic in Pakistan, and the mishandling of adaptation funds, under the weakpolicy guidelines, end up in maladaptation.

Infrastructure Projects and Climate Change Adaption in the Era of Grassroots Movement Resurgence : Suggestions fro Transformational ActionsGabrielle Huet, Valentine January 2020 (has links)
In an ever-moving world, urban governance and infrastructure have to adapt to climate change. In the meantime, people's concerns and engagement towards urban projects which will affect their lives are growing. The climate change adaptation process is inevitable to implement, considering the multiplicity of climate change threats. Hawai'i is no exception, and it has to adapt its infrastructures to stronger and more frequent floods. This master's thesis highlights the case of the Ala Wai risk flood management plan in Hawai'i, the U.S., and the engagement of some Hawaiians in the Protect Our Ala Wai Watershed (POAWW) grassroots movement against the proposed project. The conflict creates the emergence of two paradigms, which are translating two opposing strategies of action. Each paradigm aligns with a specific approach that reflects the interests and value systems of the individuals that constituted it. On the one hand, there is the economic growth paradigm supported by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), which manages the project and unfolds the resilience strategy by protecting Honolulu's dominant economic interests. On the other hand, there is the environmental justice paradigm, mobilized by the POAWW grassroots movement. This latter one is positioned within the transition strategy and demands the integration of indigenous knowledge into the project. To go beyond this conflictual standoff, the master's thesis argues that a hybrid paradigm, which would move towards a transformation strategy, would be preferable to surpass the current cleavages. This paradigm shift gives keys of actions and could be transferable in a contextualized way to other urban conflicts linked with the climate change adaptation process.

There is nothing wrong with the Rights of Nature: They just need a supervisor : The impact of the implementation of Rights of Nature in Ecuador and the small-town Esperie. / Det är inget fel på naturens rättigheter: De behöver bara en övervakare. : Effekten av genomförandet av naturrättigheter i Ecuador och i småstaden Esperie.Meshe, Marie January 2022 (has links)
The Rights of Nature is a relatively new approach to sustainable development, promoting that current environmental legislation is insufficient to protect Nature from human harm. The Rights of Nature movements emphases the importance of recognizing other living entities in our legal system. Ecuador was the first country in the world to incorporate the Rights of Nature into its Constitution in 2008. Based on semi-structured interviews, this study aims to investigate the awareness of the Rights of Nature among the inhabitants of the Equatorian small-town of Esperie and how they perceive and relate to the Rights of Nature in practice and whether the implementation has brought about any changes in their lives and community. The central findings of the study demonstrate that the majority of the respondents are aware of the Rights of Nature, also led to changes in society but also in respondents' lives and environment. The results also revealed various challenges that have arisen in the implementation of the Rights of Nature in practice and Due to stricter environmental laws and pressure from the people, the authorities have started to take measures to protect and respect Nature.

A Trojan Horse of Concrete : The Trajectory of the Belo Monte Dam Project In the Amazonian Rainforest of Brazil: A Case StudyBjörkman, Elias January 2024 (has links)
Emerging in the 1970s as part of Brazil’s energy infrastructure development plans, the Belo Monte dam project has been a hot topic throughout the years. With decades of legal battles, the construction eventually started in 2011 and was inaugurated at its full capacity in 2019. But how did power dynamics and social inequalities shape the trajectory of the Belo MonteDam project? By conducting a deep thematic analysis, drawing from multidisciplinaryframeworks such as Political Ecology Theory, Post-colonialism, and perspectives fromscholarly discourse, this thesis delves into the intricate connections of how power dynamicsintersect with political, environmental, and economic dimensions and finally how these contribute to the decision-making process of major infrastructure projects such as the Belo Monte Dam. By creating a historical timeline, leading up to the inauguration and later on analyzing the major events from the multi-/interdisciplinary perspectives presented throughout, the thesis sheds light on the interplay of the power dynamics and social inequalities shaping the project’s trajectory. The thesis ultimately reveals a complex narrative marked by historical colonial legacies, political maneuvering, as well as a globalizing governance prioritizing development and economic interest over environmental and social concerns.
