Rodrigues, Leandro Sperandio January 2008 (has links)
There are few examples in literature about the integration of project tools along the product development phases. The main research objective in thesis is to integrate some tools that facilitate the information flow along the product development phases, more specifically in Informational Project, Conceptual Project and Detailed Project phases. The product improvement “support for Vehicular Natural Gas” was the object of study in thesis. The main idea is that the information output from one tool is the input information of the subsequent tool. Starting from the Informational Project phase it was performed qualitative and quantitative market researches with the purpose of identifying the customers' demands for the studied product. The customers’ demands were the entrance data of the QFD (Quality Function Deployment) tool resulting in the product requirements and their respective specifications-goal. In Concept Project the product requirements were converted in functions and further different concepts were generated through the Morphologic Analysis. In the sequence, it was used the DOE (Design for experiments) tool to evaluate the estimate price to the possible products' configurations. The Pugh Matrix tool was used for concepts evaluation and choice. The FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) tool integrated with QFD was useful for current and potential failures identification and impact analysis in the system and process. With the application of these five tools the users’ demands were identified and improvements to the product were performed. The chosen tools proved to be adequate for integration, assuring that a continuous trackable information flow was attained with presumable reduced information loss, along the Product Development Process phases.

Customer & Supplier Integration in the Innovation Process : A quantitative study on how external integration affects product innovativeness in Swedish manufacturing firms

Johansson, Conny, Möllefors, Simon January 2013 (has links)
Background: The needs of the consumers seem to develop at the same rate as the technology advancements and put more pressure on firms to produce new and innovative products at a faster pace. Research has shown that external sources can have a significant effect on the firms’ innovation performance, but the results are partial contradicting and more research is needed. Purpose: Investigate customer and supplier involvement in product innovation in Swedish manufacturing firms. Delimitations: The study was carried out to manufacturing firms in Sweden, as Swedish firms are the most innovative in Europe at this point in time. Only large and medium sized firms were under investigation as larger firms are more eager to innovate than smaller firms. Method: The research had a deductive quantitative approach. The data was collected through a questionnaire sent out by e-mail and 124 firms participated in the study. After assessing validity and reliability, the hypotheses were tested by multiple and single regression analysis. Conclusions: Firms that strives to improve their new product development process should seize their customer’s knowledge and use it to co-develop new products. Another important factor was to use lead users, as these will improve the innovativeness even more than “ordinary” customers. The study found no support for early supplier integration in the new product development process.

Integration of Environmental Aspects in Product Development Process and Ship Design : a LEAP towards environmental awareness at Kockums AB

Karlsson Sundqvist, Therese, Källmar, Karin January 2012 (has links)
The Swedish company Kockums AB, at the forefront within maritime and naval technology, is in need of a tool, document, and/or method to include environmental aspects in their product development process. This is mainly because of additional requirements put on Kockums AB from their main customer. Ship recycling is the major issue that has to be addressed and included in Kockums AB’sworking procedures. Moreover, ship recycling is a pressing issue to handle due to horrible conditions in South Asian countries, where most ship dismantling is taking place. For these reasons, the objective of this M.Sc. thesis was to integrate environmental aspects in the product development process at Kockums AB by designing and proposing a way of implementing a tool, document, and/or method. Environmental product requirements that Kockums AB is demanded to fulfill mainly derives from customers, classification societies, laws and legislations, and themselves. The Hong Kong Convention has been adapted, in 2009, but is yet to enter into force. Ship recycling is covered by the convention, and an ‘Inventory of Hazardous Materials’ has to be provided from the ship builder, and hence this is the main aspect for Kockums AB to consider. Naval ships are, however, excluded from the Hong Kong Convention. Kockums AB does not have a routine on how to handle environmental requirements nor are environmental aspects included in their product development process. Consequently, Kockums AB’senvironmental ambition should not be put too high and rather aim at follow laws. In an empiricalstudy, regarding environmental aspects at Kockums AB, difficulties were identified. Lack of environmental knowledge, communication problems, and misunderstandings regarding the ambiguous term environment showed to be most notable. The three most prominent success factors for asuccessful integration of ecodesign, from the conducted literature review and empirical findings, are education for employees, existence of an environmental champion, and top management support. A Long-term Environmental Action Plan (LEAP), which took the success factors into account and contains 18 Actions, was developed for Kockums AB, and is the ultimate result of this research. The LEAP was developed in accordance with ISO 14006, a new standard for incorporation of ecodesign in Environmental Management Systems, with the aim of reducing adverse environmental impactsthroughout a product’s lifecycle. Moreover, the proposed way of implementing the LEAP was based on a ”Plan, Do, Check, Act” methodology from Product-Oriented Environmental Management Systems (POEMS). POEMS focus on a product’s environmental efficiency throughout its lifecycle, by a systematic integration of ecodesign in the company’s strategies and practices, and hence continual improvements. This way of implementation should be familiar to Kockums AB because the company is certified according to ISO 14001, where continual improvement of environmental performance is a key factor. The proposed LEAP includes tools, documents, and methods that are to be used in daily work and product development at Kockums AB. It is a step towards environmentally conscious design and enhanced environmental knowledge at Kockums AB. Additionally, as a result of the LEAP, the expectation is that environmental conscious mindsets of employees arise.

Unknown Date (has links)
Target costing is widely adopted by Japanese enterprises. It advances the time of cost-down evaluation to the product design and development stage. By considering into the product life cycle, it lowers the cost effectively. Therefore, for enterprises target costing is not only an effective means of cost reduction but also an useful method of profit projection. A systematic and flexible new product development (NPD) process is the key of profitability of the product. Most enterprises have abandoned the traditional sequential phases of NPD for overlapping phases of development. In overlapping phases of development, cooperation between cross-functional teams is important. Among all, accountants are especially essential because their work affects the practice of target costing. In order to further understand the differences of NPD process and accountant’s activities in different companies, this study has conducted case studies of Yulon and China-motor. The conclusions of this study are: 1.Yulon and China-motor basically adopt the same NPD process. However, the strategies emphasized are different, which cause differences in the idea generator generating, feasibility analysis and the management of target cost. 2.Under target costing, the accountant’s activities in the NPD process include “setting, allocating, controlling and managing the target cost”, “understanding the strategies and cooperating with other participators in cross-functional team”, “analyzing the capital expenditure and providing related law and foreign currency information”, “providing the cost information” and “preparing related financial statements”. 3.The defined roles of accountants in NPD in both enterprises are influenced by their selected strategies. 4.The consensus of accountant’s activities between the accountants and other team members is helpful to the practice of target costing.

These are no questionable demands in the actual market conditions. The utilization of Product Development Processes and Portfolio Management are some of the main manners to achieve these goals. The Product Development Process adopted in a specific organization should be essentially aligned with the product-life-cycle. In addition, companies need to evaluate and make decisions on the products / projects based in an overall view provided by the Portfolio Management systematics and tools. This research focuses in these issues. The main objective is to analyze the integration between the Product Development Process and the Portfolio Management in a company from the automotive industry aimed at identifying the best practices and improving opportunities. The research methodology is the realization of a literature review followed by a case-study. The main result is the proposal of a Portfolio decision model, and the realization of a case-study based on this model proposal. The main contribution is to detail the Portfolio decisions, based in a PDP model, along the product-life-cycle.
