Obraz puritanismu v povídkách Nathaniela Hawthorna / Reflection of Puritanism in the Short Stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne

Basíková, Tereza January 2014 (has links)
In its first part, this thesis attempts to explore Nathaniel Hawthorne's influences and sources of writing with an emphasis on his interest in the Puritan past and the historical basis of many of his stories. This part also provides basic information about the origin and characteristic features of Puritanism, focusing on those historical events which influenced Hawthorne's short stories. In its second part this thesis will attempt to analyse selected short stories with the focus on Hawthorne's presentation of Puritanism. Partly, it also focuses on Hawthorne's perception of sin in his stories. As a conclusion, the thesis tries to show the connection between Puritanism and sin and uses this connection to demonstrate why Hawthorne's judgement of the Puritans was not impartial, and it attempts to define what he saw as the biggest mistake of his (and generally Puritan) ancestors.

Anglický královský dvůr a jeho proměny v kontextu první poloviny 17. století (1603-1640) / English royal court and its changes in the context of first half of the 17th century (1603-1640)

Vodička, Pavel January 2014 (has links)
The aim of the dissertation is a comparative analysis of the English royal court in the first half of the 17th century. The analytical part of the dissertation focuses on researching processes that influenced the structure and roles in the royal court in regards to the political, religious, economic, social and cultural development of the world. The benchmarks represent the personality of the ruler, institutional structure and personnel composition of the court, its financing and its culture. The comparison is a defined period of time between the beginning of James I (1603) and the end of the personal rule of Charles I (1640). The dissertation is based on critical analysis of the sources and studies of secondary literature. One of the features of the Royal Court during the rule of James I was the rivalry of various factions. In the interest of retaining a balance in power, the monarch revealed selected offices only to members of his Scottish clubs. Targeted strengthening of the influences of selected institutions of court, especially Bedchamber, ended up contributing to a significant weakening of the unitary system of the government, where the Privy Council played a key role up until then. In addition, between 1603 and 1625, there became a strong concentration of power in the hands of the royal...

Jonathan Edwards: sein Verständnis von Sündenerkenntnis, eine theologiegeschichtliche Einordnung / Jonathan Edwards: his understanding of conviction of sin, a historical theological classification

Schmidtke, Karsten 01 1900 (has links)
The thesis tries to answer the question, how Jonathan Edwards understood the term “conviction of sin”. The intention is to find out the significance of his understanding of this term for the revivalmovement of his time. While numerous studies have been done on his theology and philosophy, this aspect has not been thoroughly examined yet. Based on a chronological assessment of his works Jonathan Edwardsʼ understanding of conviction of sin is established from his major works (qualitative content analysis). This reveals a development in his thought-system. In a second part Jonathan Edwardsʼ understanding of conviction of sin is compared with the theology of his predecessors, contemporaries and opponents. This examination is limited to the time of the Puritans, the “Great Awakening” and the “Second Great Awakening” (diachronic comparative analysis). In a third part Jonathan Edwardsʼ understanding of conviction of sin is assessed in a systematictheological way and classified historically. The author intends to make another German contribution to international Jonathan Edwards Studies. This research is historically focused, because of the fact, that the term “conviction of sin” is analysed by means of the biography of Edwards and a chronological classification of his works to compare it with meanings of different historical epoches and classify it in its theological historical context by that approach. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.
