The Design and Analysis of Large Display Groupware

Huang, Elaine M. 11 April 2006 (has links)
Despite the proliferation of large-scale displays in the workplace, creating groupware applications that take advantage of their potential for collaboration and communication remains a challenge. Interactions with large displays yield user experiences that are quite different from interaction with conventional desktop groupware. Thus, unique hurdles exist for designing and deploying large display groupware applications (LDGAs) that are useful and adopted into actual work practice In this dissertation we uncover and address some of the primary challenges for large display groupware applications though the design, development, deployment and evaluation of LDGA systems, as well as through the analysis of existing deployed LDGA systems. We present novel LDGA designs that address the issues of information awareness and informal communication through the use of large shared displays in workplaces and describe the findings from evaluations of their deployments. We then discuss a broad study of several existing LDGAs that we conducted and a framework of adoption challenges that we subsequently derived. We describe the application of this framework to the design a large display groupware application for supporting lightweight communication among workgroup members. We also present a field study of the use of LDGAs within the context of multi-display environments, looking specifically at the display technologies used by NASA scientists and engineers for the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) missions. This work uncovers how the display environment provides flexible support for science tasks as collaboration styles and mission goals evolve. We offer suggestions for how LDGAs should be designed and evaluated in light of our findings regarding the roles of LDGAs within an ecology of displays. Finally, we use the results of this evaluation as input for further refining our framework for LDGA adoption challenges.

Integralidade e humanizaÃÃo em saÃde mental: experiÃncias de usuÃrios em dois centros de atenÃÃo psicossocial / Completeness and humane mental health: user experiences of two psychosocial care centers

AndrÃa Batista de Andrade 20 June 2012 (has links)
The implementation of public mental health policies in the context of the Unified Health System (SUS), based on the precepts of the Psychiatric Reform, has generated new challenges for the mental health area such as the deployment of territorial and substitutive networks aiming the overcoming of the hospital-centered model, the development of the citizenship and the creation of a new social site for experiencing the psychic distress. To guarantee the materiality of changes, it is necessary the effective participation of users in the evaluation of mental health programs and services. Thus, the current research aims to understand the user experiences of two CAPS (Center for Psychosocial Care) in the Fortaleza city, concerning to the care provided by professionals, highlighting the dimensions comprehensiveness and the humanization on the health care. Regarding the methodology of this research, the choice for the qualitative approach is related to the ontological nature of the research object because this nature is pervaded by meanings which the users pose on their experiences on health care services and the way how they understand and interpret such care practices. The techniques used to obtain the empirical material were the detailed interview and the unstructured observation, in a time period of two months, from July to December 20011. The data were analyzed and interpreted under the perspective of the GadamerÂs critique hermeneutics whose method assumes the inter-subjectivity in the interconnection with the materiality to which it binds in a dialectic manner. The results revealed three central themes which constitute the Network of Meanings: A) The experiences on therapeutics itinerary; B) the user perception on the services, C) The quality of the care. We highlight the impact of the distinct models, hospital-centered and psychosocial, in the experience lived by distinct CAPS users. We also observed that the user perceive the embracement, the resolvability, the ambience, the good interaction between professionals and users, the monitoring of medicines and the humanization as the main aspects concerning to the quality of mental health care, although such issues had presented themselves in a singular way in the two CAPS investigated. We conclude that, despite some obstacle, the aspects of care pointed by users of the distinct CAPS corroborate the ideals of the Psychiatric Reform and signalize that the reorientation of the health care model already makes capillary in the daily care practices.

Tanssiesitys auttamismenetelmänä dementoituvien vanhusten hoitotyössä

Ravelin, T. (Teija) 28 October 2008 (has links)
Abstract The aim of this study was to describe and evaluate the use of dance performance as an intervention in the care of elderly persons with dementia. The research task was to describe and evaluate how demented elderly persons experience dance performances and describe dance performance and its essence as an intervention. The method was qualitative evaluation research. The informants were demented elderly persons (13), their family members (4), nurses (7) and practical nurse students (3). Four dance performances based on elderly persons' memories of different seasons were performed in the nursing home. The data were collected using individual interviews of elderly persons, videotaping, heart rate measurements and focus group interviews of family members, nurses and students. The experiences of the demented elderly persons were related to dance performance as an activity, dance performance, performers, themselves, and to the audience and surroundings. Dance performance was evaluated as a process intervention with an effect on the elderly person and his/her interaction with the others and also on the family members. Dance performance as an intervention in the care of elderly persons with dementia has its own special features as does its implementation in nursing. Watching a dance performance is an active event to the demented elderly person. Feelings, memories and sense of community with the others aroused by dance performance are positively significant in the nursing care context. Dance performance is an interactive psychosocial intervention which promotes the well-being and elicits the resources of the elderly person with dementia. It can also be a contradictory intervention. This study has produced information for gerontological nursing. With this information dance performance can be used in similar situations as a goal-directed intervention. Tutkimus on tuottanut tietoa kliinisen, gerontologisen hoitotieteen tietoperustaan tuomalla laadullista tutkimusnäyttöä aiemmin tutkimattomasta auttamismenetelmästä. Tuotetun tiedon avulla tanssiesityksiä voidaan hyödyntää vastaavissa tilanteissa tavoitteellisesti auttamismenetelmänä.

Using the Give-Get Grid to Understand Potential Expectations of Engagement in a Community-Academic Partnership

Southerland, Jodi, Behringer, Bruce, Slawson, Deborah L. 01 November 2013 (has links)
Research suggests that stakeholder investment is maximized when partnerships understand the assumptions held by partners of the benefits to be derived and contributions to be made to the partnership. In 2011, representatives from seven rural county high schools and five university departments participated in a planning workshop designed to identify elements of an effective community-academic partnership to address adolescent obesity disparity in Southern Appalachia. The purpose of this investigation was to examine key elements of partnership building by way of the Give-Get Grid partnership tool. Content analysis was conducted to identify emerging themes. University representatives consistently identified more proposed program contributions as well as benefits than their high school partners. University personnel responses generally pertained to their level of participation and investment in the partnership, whereas high school personnel tended to identify contributions fundamental to both partnership and program success. Additionally, content analysis uncovered programmatic facilitators and potential barriers that can be instrumental in program planning and forming program messages. Findings suggest that although partners often share common goals, perceptions of the value of investment and benefits may vary. The Give-Get Grid can be used during the program-planning phase to help identify these differences. Implications for practice are discussed.

Jastremski, Mélanie 09 1900 (has links)
Event though there has been an increased public and research interest in the street youth phenomenon in the past two decades, some aspects of their lives, one of them being parenthood, have not been yet thoroughly examined and therefore, remain unknown to a certain extent. In order to gain a better understanding of street youth’s needs related to becoming a parent, as well as an understanding of the extent to which a service specifically tailored for such a population manages to satisfy their needs, this study had the purpose of describing and understanding the service utilization experience of the Service à la famille from the Montreal street youth agency Dans la rue. More specifically, the objectives were to: gain an awareness and understanding of the persons and resources street youths who become parents turn to for help, and the significance of the Service à la famille among these resources; understand what brings a youth to the Service à la famille and what makes him or her use the services and activities offered; and finally, describe the perceptions and estimate the level of appreciation of the Service à la famille. Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted with nine youths who had used the Service à la famille and had had a follow-up. During the interview, the following themes were explored: help seeking related to becoming a parent, the utilization experience of the services and activities offered by the Service à la famille, the portrait of the service, and level of satisfaction regarding the service utilization experience. At the time of the interview, all youths were parents of at least one child, and the majority had first sought help at the Service à la famille during pregnancy to satisfy different needs related to becoming a parent. A variety of needs brought the youths to seek help at the Service à la famille. These needs could be satisfied, but not necessarily at all times, through meetings with the staff and participation in group activities offered by the service. At times, their needs corresponded to the explicit intervention goals of the service. In general, the interviews suggest that youths have a positive perception of the Service à la famille, and more precisely, of the staff. The interviewees named a considerable number of elements they appreciated from their service utilization experience. Youths nevertheless perceive limitations in the ability of the Service à la famille to give help, especially budgetary constraints and the staff’s workload related to high demand of services. Even though youths did not necessarily seek help from the service in order to prevent family violence or negligence, which is the mandate of the Service à la famille, much of them acknowledge having received valuable assistance in this regard on the part of the staff, especially when they reported having been in a violent intimate relationship. They also recognize different ways through which the staff encouraged them to feel good and take care of themselves in order to do the same with their child or children. All interviewees were satisfied with the follow-up they received from the Service à la famille and claimed they would recommend the service to others. The intervention approach advocated by the service is considered to be a strong element in responding appropriately to youths’ needs. This approach appears to have allowed youths who became parents to get the help they needed at a specific moment in time. According to youths, an aspect of service utilization which could be improved is access to help; since the help interviewees needed was not always available when they asked for it. Since youths perceive a lack of staff availability, they offer suggestions for improvement that would allow the aid supplied by the service to be more accessible to youths when they seek help.
