Women's perceptions of quality of household work

Colton, Tamara Lynn 12 January 2009
Womens roles in the work force have increased, however, womens positions in the household have not changed greatly (Lennon & Rosenfield, 1994). While paid work research has focused significantly on the qualities of roles, household work research has not (Janzen & Hellsten, 2007). As the few existing instruments that do measure the quality of household work roles lack psychometric evidence (Janzen & Hellsten, 2007), a new instrument assessing all aspects of the quality of household work roles and possessing evidence of validity and reliability is required. The first step in the instrument development process is the identification and definition of relevant constructs. Thus, the main purpose of the study was to identify household work themes. Four focus groups of triple role women were performed with a total of 20 participants. A snowball sampling technique was used to recruit participants. Thematic analysis of the transcripts identified eight themes: No End Result, Scheduling, Time Constraints, Psychological Strain, Equality in Work, Value, Money, and Reward. The results found women to enjoy certain aspects of household work, but that they lead busy and hectic lifestyles. The themes created in the study were placed into a table of specifications this is to guide future instrument development research in which items can be included for each of these eight themes.

A multi-centre study of the impact of endometriosis on health-related quality of life and work productivity

Nnoaham, Kelechi Ebere January 2011 (has links)
Background: Endometriosis is a common condition in women of reproductive age, causing pelvic pain and subfertility, but little is known about its impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and work productivity worldwide. Methods: In 10 countries across five continents, this study recruited 1,418 women, aged 18-45, without a previous surgical diagnosis of endometriosis, scheduled to undergo a laparoscopy to investigate symptoms suggestive of endometriosis or to be sterilised. Pre-operatively, women completed a standardised questionnaire assessing symptoms, diagnostic delay, HRQoL and work productivity using validated instruments. Surgeons completed a standardised questionnaire incorporating findings at laparoscopy including endometriosis stage according to revised American Fertility Society criteria. Results: There was a mean delay of 9.2 years (SD 8.8), principally in primary care, between the onset of symptoms and diagnostic laparoscopy. This diagnostic delay was longer in centres where healthcare was predominantly state-funded (12.8 vs. 7.6 years; p<0.001). In multivariate analyses, the delay was positively associated with the number of pelvic symptoms (chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhoea, dyspareunia and heavy periods; p<0.001) and a higher body mass index (p<0.001). Physical HRQoL was significantly reduced in affected women compared to those with similar symptoms and no endometriosis (p=0.012). Not being in paid employment, severe pelvic pain and moderate-severe disease were associated with reduced physical HRQoL (all p<0.001). Each affected woman lost on average 10.0 hours (SD 10.6) of work weekly, due mainly to reduced effectiveness while working. The annual indirect cost of endometriosis associated with work productivity loss ranged from US$399 per woman in Ibadan (Nigeria) to US$18,586 per woman in Boston (USA). Conclusions: Endometriosis significantly impairs HRQoL and work productivity across countries and ethnicities, yet women continue to experience diagnostic delays in primary care. A higher index of suspicion is needed to expedite specialist assessment of symptomatic women. Future research should seek to clarify pain mechanisms in relation to endometriosis severity.

The impact of chemotherapy for breast cancer on managing daily tasks : a longitudinal study of cognitive, psychosocial and safety outcomes in the home and workplace

Lawrence, Catherine L. January 2012 (has links)
BACKGROUND. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the UK and is often treated with chemotherapy. Psychosocial side effects (anxiety, depression and fatigue) and cognitive side effects (memory and concentration difficulties) are frequently reported by breast cancer patients. Following recent advances in screening and treatment technology for the disease, survivorship rates have increased. Therefore, women are able to continue or resume their daily tasks during and following treatment. The impact of chemotherapy-related psychological side effects on quality of life and work ability are documented, however the impact on safety outcomes has currently been overlooked in this patient population. Evidence from other research fields suggests that anxiety, depression, fatigue and cognitive difficulties are associated with increased risk of accidents and injuries. OBJECTIVES. This research provides longitudinal self-report data on psychosocial well-being, cognitive function, quality of life, work ability and accident frequency outcomes. METHOD. A mixed-methods, prospective, longitudinal approach was employed. Breast cancer patients about to undergo chemotherapy treatment (n = 60) completed questionnaires at pre-treatment baseline, and again four months (follow-up time 1), eight months (follow-up time 2), and twelve months (follow-up time 3) later. A treatment control group of breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy (n = 56), and an age-matched healthy control group (n = 58) were assessed at comparable intervals. In addition, a subsample of participants from the chemotherapy group (n = 11), radiotherapy group (n = 6), and healthy control group (n = 15) kept personal solicited diaries for a four-month period to capture the lived experience of managing daily tasks. The diary data were examined using thematic analysis. The combination of the quantitative and qualitative approaches added breadth and depth to the study with the aim of obtaining a realistic and comprehensive understanding of the impact of chemotherapy for breast cancer on patients daily lives. RESULTS. Chemotherapy patients reported a subtle decline in psychosocial well-being, cognitive function and quality of life, and encountered more accidents, particularly at mid-chemotherapy. CONCLUSION. It is important that healthcare professionals, breast cancer patients, relatives and employers are aware of the temporal fluctuations associated with chemotherapy-related side effects, particularly potential safety outcomes. Interventions could be developed to help patients manage their daily tasks in the home and in the workplace safely.

Qualidade de vida de trabalhadores de enfermagem com distúrbios osteomusculares relacionados ao trabalho / Quality of life in nursing workers with work-related musculoskeletal disorders

Ratier, Ana Paula Pelegrini 26 June 2012 (has links)
This study aimed to capture the quality of life (QoL) of nursing workers affected by Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) and build strategies for its improvement. We investigated the QoL of nursing workers with upper limb disorders in a University Hospital. The study is exploratory and descriptive with qualitative approach and was developed with the nursing staff of a public hospital, constituted of 11 women and two men suffering from disorders in the upper limbs, representatives of all categories of nursing and several units. Data collection was conducted through individual interviews and focus groups. After project approval by the Ethics Committee, data collection began with interviews with the chosen subjects. Five focus group sessions were also carried out, from November to December in 2011. The sociodemographic results show that the average working time in this institution is 19 years, indicating extensive exposure to physiological loads; seven workers perform, concurrently with paid work, full housework and five of them partial; leisure activities are only occasional and the majority of symptoms refers to painful shoulders, which ultimately jeopardize the performance of basic activities of daily living. After treatment of the sociodemographic data, the reports were subjected to content analysis which raised four categories: existing with pain, QoL is having no limitations , my job influencing on my QoL and caring and being cared for. In the first category, the reports reveal the influence of pain in the constitution of the subject, their expectations and its relationship with the emotional picture. Regarding the quality of life, we found that it is hampered by the co-existence of two aspects mentioned in the second and third categories: pain and its resulting limitations and inadequacies in the work organization and process, and some unfavorable factors of daily work mentioned were: too much time at work, inappropriate equipment and improper work organization and processes. Thus, the speeches match with the definitions of Quality of Working Life and Health-Related Quality of Life, these being inseparable from the concept of QoL for these workers, since the perceptions of the value attributed to life are under the influence of pain and that inadequacies in the work process significantly alter QoL. In the latter category, there was satisfaction with the group process, with enhanced awareness and changes in their care. In particular, workers were sensitized to crucial ways to control chronic conditions of WMSDs: attention to themselves and to combinations of personal, physical, social and emotional aspects. Increased attention with the environment also happened, with recognition of its risks and benefits and the use of simple health strategies, learned and built collectively. It was built, along with the workers, an educational program where they were offered new prospects for alleviation of symptoms, as well as behavioral changes related to postural and environmental components, meeting one of the principles of Health Promotion and addressing one of the concepts of QoL for this group. In conclusion, QoL of these workers is closely related to pain and work. It was understood that there is a need for multiple combination of strategies, with accountability of the individuals themselves and the existence of collective actions of the health system and community
