An Analysis Of Metafictional Self-reflexivity In Laurence Sterne

Okuroglu, Sule 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis evaluates metafictional self-reflexivity, and presents it within the scope of certain structuralist and post-structuralist approaches especially by referring to William Gass&rsquo / definition of metafiction and Raymond Federman&rsquo / s theories on the devices of metafiction. Then aspects of the works of William Gass&rsquo / Willie Master&rsquo / s Lonesome Wife and Laurence Sterne&rsquo / s The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy are discussed within this framework.

An investigation into a dramatic writing toolset for the creation of a new work of drama

Player, Glen J. January 2007 (has links)
In this exegesis I have attempted to formulate a primary toolset for dramatic writing that I can apply to create dramatic structure in plays, the chief example being my play Albatross (included herein). This toolset is contingent upon Aristotle's basic tenet of drama, that "tragedy is an imitation of an action" (2002: 10). This exegesis theorises that the work of modern writers on drama such as Spencer, Packard, Catron, Lamott, See, Hicks and many others, fundamentally accords with Aristotle on this point, such that the tools they espouse can collectively be considered a standard set for dramatic writing. Beyond this, my research has led me to believe that there is a primary subset of tools specific to creating dramatic structure. These tools, formulated from dramatic theory, best capture my own way of thinking about my writing practice. I divide them into two types: the first, tools of creation, comprise Theme and Values; Character and their Values; Characters and Action; Character Orchestration and Obstacles; and Event and Significant Change. The second, tools of evaluation, are Passivity; Stakes; and Premise. Together these eight tools have been responsible for creating dramatic structure in the play, Albatross.

Flexibla gränser : det fria valet?

Dennland, Carina, Liestam, Marika January 2015 (has links)
This study aims to get an understanding about how the self-employed draws boundaries between work and private life in modern society and how the boundaries is managed. The purpose of the study is to get an understanding of which role the modern phenomenon Hoffice have as both as a workplace and a workmethod. Furthermore the study illustrate how the increasing freedom and individualism in modern society affects the individual and the boundaries. The study is based on five semi-structured interviews with self-employed workers who are members of Hoffice. The study shows that boundaries can be divided into three parts, by time and space as well as mentally. External factors controlling the boundaries are for example children, finances and customers, something the respondents have to relate to and at the same time have no control over. Common is that the respondents feel they have freedom to shape their own life and identity. The study shows that there is no clear limits between work and private life, they blend together. A self-employed have many choices they have to do both for the business and the personal life, it has emerged that they are helped by Hoffice when it comes to boundaries between work and private life.

Rethinking conflict resolution research in post-war Bosnia and Hercegovina : a genealogical and ontological exploration

Muir, Rachel January 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores how research is implicated in the constitution of post-war environments, and gives an account of being and becoming a researcher in post-war Bosnia. My main contention is that when peace and conflict researchers conduct research in post-war contexts, their presence, practices, and the consequential production of knowledge and representations, have political effects. I argue that the implications of this have not been fully explained, acknowledged, or problematised within Conflict Resolution, which tends to rely on research approaches and assumptions taken from ‘normal’ science. This thesis suggests how reflexivity and alternatives methodologies, including visual research might be used to represent the emotional, sensory, and often intangible elements of post-war realities. It enacts an engagement in the politics of research and uses reflexive writing and visual methods to draw attention to the importance of the relational aspects of research in postwar environments. Visual journeys are also used to argue that visual methods can provide a way of revisiting the epistemological and ontological assumptions about lived experiences and realities in post-war settings. The thesis is based upon one year of ethnographic fieldwork undertaken in Bosnia, and is also informed by eighteen months of volunteer work with a Bosnian Community Centre in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

Student stories about mathematics : a tool to understand more about the teaching and learning of mathematics

Brennan, Jean January 2017 (has links)
This qualitative study sets out to explore the experiences of secondary school students while they are learning mathematics in school. By using student stories of learning mathematics as my main data collection method I began to understand the view of mathematics that my students were constructing as they negotiated the complicated terrain that I know as the mathematics classroom. This method of student stories to communicate student voice was selected by me to allow the students the freedom to express themselves in a variety of comfortable, differentiated formats. My methodological approach evolved as the action research phases progressed, allowing for methodological inventiveness (Dadds and Hart 2001). This was a deliberate decision by me so that my research progress could be best served by a suitable methodological approach. The end result was a qualitative study that embraced a living theory model of action research (McNiff 2013), where practitioners can develop their own personal theories of practice (Whitehead 1999). Within this action research structure I used a narrative approach, considering narratives both as a data collection method and as a transformative phenomenon. Using the ideas of narrative research for data collection, I facilitated storytelling workshops with my students, collecting stories to inform the research interest. In this research, using narratives was also considered as a phenomenon because of their influence in allowing authors to model and re-model their experiences through their stories. I found that considering narrative as phenomenon complemented and supported a portraiture methodological stance (Lawrence-Lightfoot 2005). Narrative as a phenomenon also became apparent by the influence the student stories had on my 9 ability to understand my classroom and my subsequent teaching practice. To analyse the story data I utilised the ideas of Anderson (2011) who developed a transpersonal research method that incorporates the researcher's intuition, emotional and personal capacities into the research process. By using a multi-method approach of thematic analysis, symbolic interactionist perspective, input from colleagues and my reflexive intuition, I formed an analysis of the data that could be used to look at similarities and trends in the student stories. In addition, working with the student stories encouraged levels of empathy between the reader and the student author that transformed classroom practice and understandings. There are several ways that this thesis can contribute to practice. Firstly this research develops a pedagogical tool that encourages student voice, celebrates individuality and helps create an approachable interface between mathematics teacher and student. Secondly, it models how this way of working could be used to inform the practice of the classroom teacher by developing a deeper understanding of their students. Thirdly, the identification of particular themes is invaluable to subject department development and planning, and these themes can feed into a department and whole school ethos. Finally, it models a form of action research that encourages critical reflexive practice and utilises the knowledge, experience and intuition of the researcher with the sole purpose of improving the experiences of their students.

Samhällskunskapsläraren: Praktikern men framförallt taktikern : En kvalitativ studie av samhällskunskapslärares förhållningssätt till kontroversiella frågor inom politik / Social science teacher: The practitioner but above all the tactician : A qualitative study of social science teachers approach to controversial issues in politics

Larsson, Maria, Andersson, Anna January 2018 (has links)
How do social science teachers handle controversial political issues in their teaching and how are those difficulties affecting their ways of teaching? What kind of role does the teacher adapt into while entering the classroom and what does teachers in general think of the fostering assignment that has been given to them? This study investigates what approach six social science teachers in the municipality of Helsingborg think of controversial policy issues in the classroom. The method of this study is based on a qualitative study where observations and interviews are the main sources to the following investigation in the problematic area. Several different components have been used to analyse the results of our collected empirical data. The conclusion is that teachers handle controversial political issues in their teaching situations in different ways. Difficulties mainly arises within situations where student are encouraged to unreservedly express themselves without violating anyone or when controversial issues are dealt in ways that students experiences as offensive. The survey contains examples of different roles and approaches and the effects after dealing with controversial issues. A conclusion of the survey is that there is no consensus on how the teacher should act. In assumption, the survey suggests, despite the fact that controversial political issues are often considered as a complex area in educational contexts, they are not to be avoided. This is because it is a contributing factor in the students developing process of becoming understanding and good citizens in our society.

Oliveira, Manoela Ziebell de January 2010 (has links)
Reflexivity is a universal human nature that characterizes human beings in the same general way at any time and place. This thesis investigates the reflexive process of professionals in the context of contemporary careers. Therefore, five studies were conducted. The first study revised articles related to protean and boundaryless careers published in the last ten years. The second, proposed and explored the psychometric properties of the Reflexivity Scale. The third involved the validation of the Protean Career Attitudes Scale and of the Boundaryless Career Attitudes Scale. The fourth study investigated correlations between career styles, reflexivity and organizational values, and compared different groups. Finally, the fifth study investigated the relationship between different styles of reflexivity and the implementation of protean and boundaryless career attitudes.

Reconceptualising resilience : a guide to theory and practice

Louw, Penelope Lee Kokot 11 1900 (has links)
How people survive and thrive through adversity is a question which has prompted much research. There is little agreement on the definition of resilience beyond the basic idea of "bouncing back", resulting in many studies which offer contradictory and confusing information. This study sought to organise the literature into broad conceptual categories, and attempted to explain some of the differences in definitions and research methods at the level of paradigm. A need to reconceptualise resilience was identified and undertaken in view of input from ecosystemic, cybernetic and postmodem paradigms. Attention was given especially to the role oflanguage, meaning and description, and the role of the observer/researcher in such a reconceptualisation. Guidelines were offered for approaching research in future. Finally, the context of the researcher was examined in an attempt at self-reflexivity as part of the process of research as proposed in the reconceptualisation. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Torres, Carla Simone Doyle January 2016 (has links)
The study about television – heir of Medias like radio and cinema – doesn’t share the same scientific support with its predecessors. Specific TV work groups in Brazil, with Obitel as an example, became more frequent since 2000’s. This media style and aesthetic aimed studies are even rarer. This thesis suggests a starting point to the aesthetic discussion through metaTV, with the prime objective of stablishing an outline to the reflexivity aesthetic within Brazilian TV shows, verifying the possibility to set up a promise of a television genre that still needs to be defined. The reflexivity is, here, theorized from metaTV and conceptualized as an art field irradiating process. Its television form is verified upon a group of Brazilian shows, since 1980’s until 2000’s first decade. From a previous analysis, according to Metiérs and Techniques, Updates and Backstage and Program and Channel Promotion (SPIES, 2004), the corpus of this thesis is defined and constituted by Cena Aberta (REDE GLOBO, 2003), Profissão Repórter (REDE GLOBO, 2006) e No Estranho Planeta dos Seres Audiovisuais (TV FUTURA, 2008 – 2009). From this perspective, work with the possibility that the study will embody Natalie Burtin (1998) idea that metaTV would be the foundress of a television genre, as well as fulfill the aesthetic promise, argued by Virginie Spies (2004). In such verification, an analysis has been made, guided by style activation factors, like: Intermediality (CALDWELL, 1995), Plasticity, Morphology, Presentation Modes and Sounds, inspired by Elizabeth Bastos Duarte (2004). These analysis shows us that there are some arrangements among the possibilities offered by an aesthetic that inherits a big variety of audio-visual language characteristics shared with cinema that still maintain a great verbal language support boundage, wich points the persistent radio influence on television. This ensemble defines its audiovisuality (ROCHA et al, 2013) gives to television a peculiar way that reflexive promise can be accomplished.
