An exploration of tutors' experiences of facilitating problem-based learning. Part 1: An educational research methodology combining innovation and philosophical traditionHaith-Cooper, Melanie January 2003 (has links)
Yes / The use of problem-based learning (PBL) in Health Professional curricula is becoming more wide spread. Although the way in which the tutor facilitates PBL can have a major impact on students’ learning (Andrews and Jones 1996), the literature provides little consistency as to how the tutor can effectively facilitate PBL ( Haith-Cooper 2000 ). It is therefore important to examine the facilitation role to promote effective learning through the use of PBL. This article is the first of two parts exploring a study that was undertaken to investigate tutors’ experiences of facilitating PBL. This part focuses on the methodology and the combining of innovative processes with traditional philosophical traditions to develop a systematic educational research methodology. The study was undertaken respecting the philosophy of hermeneutic phenomenology but utilised alternative data collection and analysis technique. Video conferencing and e-mail were used in conjunction with more traditional processes to access a worldwide sample. This paper explores some of the issues that arose when undertaking such a study. The second article then focuses on exploring the findings of the study and their implications for the facilitation of PBL.

An analysis of the works of G.C. Oosthuizen on the Shembe ChurchZwane, Protas Linda 02 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The membership of the African Independent Churches is growing day by day. Research into the growth ohhis phenomenon is being conducted by various scholars. G.C. Oosthuizen studied the African Independent Churches in general, and the Shembe Church, in particular. This study
examines Oosthuizen' s research of the African Independent Churches by analysing the three books that he devoted specifically to the Shembe Church. A set of five criteria is developed to evaluate Oosthuizen as a researcher. The study finds that his background and formation affected the research he conducted and contributed to the type of picture he portrayed of the Shembe Church. Oosthuizen, as a scholar of religion, sometimes allowed his theological interests to influence his research. As an empirical researcher Oosthuizen attempted to let the AICs "speak for themselves" but his theological interests caused him to make value judgements which influenced his research findings. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. A comparison between Plato and Zoroaster : aspects of the philosophy in the Timaeus and the GathasViviers, D. S. (Daniele Siobhan) 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The analysis of the system of speculative thought of Plato and Zoroaster, as found in
Plato's Timaeus and Zoroaster's Gathas, seeks to compare a well-known philosophy,
that of Plato, to a lesser known and often misunderstood system of speculative
thought within a religion, namely Zoroastrianism. The purpose of such a comparison
is to show that the speculative thought found in religion is often comparable to
philosophy, as is the case in the doctrines postulated in the Gathas. It serves to
illuminate the philosophy within a lesser known religion (Zoroastrianism) by
comparing it to a well-known philosophy (that of Plato), and in doing so, to cast new
light on both.
The comparison of Plato and Zoroaster has been proposed and sometimes executed by
other scholars as well. The main problem in these other comparisons, thus far, has
been the fact that no historical contact or definite doctrinal influence of Zoroaster on
Plato has been or is likely to be established. Though Plato might well have been
familiar with Zoroastrian doctrines, this cannot be satisfactorily proven. This study
does not depend on historical contact or doctrinal influence (though the possibility of
the latter has been discussed), but compares the two doctrines independent of
historical factors and is based solely on the striking similarities between these two
systems of thought.
This study has focussed on some of the basic concepts within the two doctrines, such
as creation, the soul, and dualism. In this study I have emphasised the philosophical
aspect of Zoroastrianism, though it is classified as a religion, because I believe that
much of what has been classified as religion also incorporates speculative thought that
can be analysed separately, and as a system of speculative thought it is comparable to
other traditions of speculative thought, such as Greek philosophy. This comparison
therefore seeks to counteract some of the assumptions about religions, and how they
are studied, by focusing on the philosophical basis underlying the doctrines in the
Zoroastrian religion.
Another aspect to the comparison is a focus on the similarities of doctrine originating
in two cultures previously held to be vastly different, namely Persian and Greek. There has previously been a tendency to consider the cultures of the classical and the
ancient Near Eastern world as separate and completely distinct from each other, and
in doing so, ignoring important historical contact. Although the historical interaction
between these two areas has received increased attention, comparative investigations
have emphasised the differences between the cultures of these regions, although
similarities do abound and the comparison of analogous aspects of the various
cultures could prove valuable to the study of the ancient world. Recognition of the
larger context within which the various cultures of the ancient world operated can
only add to the understanding of the ancient world, and pave the way for reassessing
the traditions and world-views of various cultures.
binne 'n religie, naamlik Zoroastrisme.

Trust management of social network in health careChomphoosang, Pawat 12 November 2013 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The reliability of information in health social network sites (HSNS) is an
imperative concern since false information can cause tremendous damage to
health consumers. In this thesis, we introduce a trust framework which captures
both human trust level and its uncertainty, and also present advantages of using
the trust framework to intensify the dependability of HSNS, namely filtering
information, increasing the efficiency of pharmacy marketing, and modeling how
to monitor reliability of health information. Several experiments which were
conducted on real health social networks validate the applicability of the trust
framework in the real scenarios.

Lysine acetyltransferase Gcn5-B regulates the expression of crucial genes in Toxoplasma and its function is regulated through lysine acetylationWang, Jiachen 02 April 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Histone acetylation has been linked to developmental changes in gene expression and is a validated drug target of apicomplexan parasites, but little is known about the roles of individual histone modifying enzymes and how they are recruited to target genes. The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii (phylum Apicomplexa) is unusual among invertebrates in possessing two GCN5-family lysine acetyltransferases (KATs). While GCN5a is required for gene expression in response to alkaline stress, this KAT is dispensable for parasite proliferation in normal culture conditions. In contrast, GCN5b cannot be disrupted, suggesting it is essential for Toxoplasma viability. To further explore the function of GCN5b, we generated clonal parasites expressing an inducible HA-tagged form of GCN5b containing a point mutation that ablates enzymatic activity (E703G). Stabilization of this dominant-negative form of GCN5b was mediated through ligand-binding to a destabilization domain (dd) fused to the protein. Induced accumulation of the ddHAGCN5b(E703G) protein led to a rapid arrest in parasite replication. Growth arrest was accompanied by a decrease in histone H3 acetylation at specific lysine residues as well as reduced expression of GCN5b target genes in GCN5b(E703G) parasites, which were identified using chromatin immunoprecipitation coupled with microarray hybridization (ChIP-chip). We also demonstrate that GCN5b interacts with AP2-domain proteins, which are plant-like transcription factors in Apicomplexa. The interactions between GCN5b, AP2IX-7, and AP2X-8 were confirmed by reciprocal co-immunoprecipitation and revealed a “core complex” that includes the co-activator ADA2-A, TFIID subunits, LEO1 polymerase-associated factor (Paf1) subunit, and RRM proteins. The dominant-negative phenotype of ddHAGCN5b(E703G) parasites, considered with the proteomics and ChIP-chip data, indicate that GCN5b plays a central role in transcriptional and chromatin remodeling complexes. We conclude that GCN5b has a non-redundant and indispensable role in regulating gene expression required during the Toxoplasma lytic cycle.

Role of a putative bacterial lipoprotein in Pseudomonas aeruginosa-mediated cytotoxicity toward airway cellsAkhand, Saeed Salehin January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The patients with Cystic fibrosis (CF), an inherent genetic disorder, suffer from chronic
bacterial infection in the lung. In CF, modification of epithelial cells leads to alteration of
the lung environment, such as inhibition of ciliary bacterial clearance and accumulation
of thickened mucus in the airways. Exploiting these conditions, opportunistic pathogens
like Pseudomonas aeruginosa cause lifelong persistent infection in the CF lung by
forming into antibiotic-resistant aggregated communities called biofilms. Airway
infections as well as inflammation are the two major presentations of CF lung disease. P.
aeruginosa strains isolated from CF lungs often contain mutations in the mucA gene, and
this mutation results in higher level expression of bacterial polysaccharides and toxic
lipoproteins. In a previous work, we have found a putative lipoprotein gene (PA4326)
which is overexpressed in antibiotic-induced biofilm formed on cultured CF-derived
airway cells. In the current work, we speculated that this particular putative lipoprotein
affects cellular cytotoxicity and immune-stimulation in the epithelial cells. We found that
mutation of this gene (ΔPA4326) results in reduced airway cell killing without affecting
other common virulence factors. Moreover, we observed that this gene was able to stimulate secretion of the proinflammatory
cytokine IL-8 from host cells. Interestingly, we also found that ΔPA4326
mutant strains produced less pyocyanin exotoxin compared to the wild type. Furthermore,
our results suggest that PA4326 regulates expression of the pyocyanin biosynthesis gene
phzM, leading to the reduced pyocyanin phenotype. Overall, these findings implicate
PA4326 as a virulence factor in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In the future, understating the
molecular interplay between the epithelial cells and putative lipoproteins like PA4326
may lead to development of novel anti-inflammatory therapies that would lessen the
suffering of CF patients.
