The relevance of Moltmann’s concept of hope for the discourse on hope in Zimbabwe

Many Zimbabweans experienced its 18 April 1980 independence of Zimbabwe as ushering in an era of hope. However, it is shown that events like Operations Murambatsvina and Makavhotasei, the Land Reform Program, and the Economic Structural Adjustment Program significantly and negatively impacted on the initial hope of independence. The study traces and explores the potential of Moltmann’s work on hope for the Zimbabwean context. It is concluded that Moltmann’s work can make a constructive contribution the meta-discourse on hope in Zimbabwe. 'A good education sets up a divine discontent': the contribution of St Peter's School to black South African autobiography

Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Arts, 2000 / This thesis explores in empirical fashion the contribution made by St Peter's Secondary School to South African literary history. It takes as its starting point the phenomenon of the first black autobiographies having been published within a ten-year period from 1954 to 1963, with all but one of the male writers receiving at least part of their post-primary schooling at St Peter's School in Johannesburg. Among the texts, repositioned here within their educational context, are Tell Freedom by Peter Abrahams, Down Second Avenue by Es'kia Mphahlele, Road to Ghana by Alfred Hutchinson, and Chocolates for My Wife by Todd Matshikiza. The thesis examines the educational milieu of the inter-war years in the Transvaal over and against education in the other provinces of the Union, the Anglo-Catholic ethos of the Community of the Resurrection who established and ran the school, the pedagogical environment of St Peter's School, and the autobiographical texts themselves, in order to plot the course which the autobiographers' subsequent lives took as they wrote back to the education which had both liberated and shackled them. It equipped them far in advance of the opportunities available to them under the colour bar, necessitating exile, even as it colonised their minds in a way perhaps spared those who never attended school, requiring a continual reassessment of their identity over time. The thesis argues that their Western education was crucial in the development of their hybrid identity, what Es'kia Mphahlele has termed `the dialogue of two selves', which was in each case worked out through an autobiography. The typical, if simplified, trajectory is an enthusiastic espousal of the culture of the West encountered in their schooling at St Peter's, and then a rejection out of a sense of betrayal in favour of Africa, eventually leading to a synthesis of the two. The thesis concludes that it was the emphasis on all-round education and character formation, in the British boarding school tradition, with its thrust of sacrifice and service, which helped to fashion the strong belief systems of Abrahams and Mphahlele's later years, namely Christian socialism and African humanism, which inform their mature writings.

During Jesus' earthly ministry He taught the pure doctrine of corporeal resurrection to His disciples. Some of them became special witnesses to the literal bodily resurrection of Jesus after His death. Over time, men's philosophies perverted the true doctrine of the resurrection. Those teachings became the orthodoxy of the early Christian church and were handed down to modern Christianity. The pure doctrine of corporeal resurrection was weakened, and in some sects, was lost.The Lord restored the gospel through Joseph Smith. Part of the Restoration qualified him as a special witness of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through him pure doctrines were restored. One of those doctrines was the Resurrection and its importance to eternal man.

A crise sanitária se transportou para uma crise humanitária e, assim, desvelando os lados obscuros de um mundo que parece caminhar para sua derrocada, em rota de colisão consigo mesmo. A partir do cenário pandêmico e suas consequências, a questão que nos impulsiona será a esperança e como ela nos moverá para um mundo (pós) pandêmico e, por sua vez, pavimentar o terreno que nossos pés tocarão para seguir em direção a uma realidade que desautorize as pérfidas e mórbidas perspectivas desse mundo (pós) pandêmico. A metodologia a seguir se realiza por meio da bibliografia escolhida e com ampla adesão de escritos do autor em questão. From the pandemic scenario and its consequences, the question that drives us will be hope and how it will move us towards a (post) pandemic world and, in turn, pave the ground that our feet will touch to move towards a reality that disavow the perfidious and morbid perspectives of this (post) pandemic world. The following methodology is carried out through the chosen bibliography and with a wide range of writings by the author in question. This dissertation argues for the hope that is found in G. C. Berkouwer’s doctrines of providence and bodily resurrection in relation to the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, and the rising pervasiveness of the doctrine of hyperpreterism among American Reformed circles. In Part I of the dissertation, Berkouwer’s doctrine of providence is explained and then evaluated and applied. By way of explanation and exposition, Berkouwer’s knowledge of providence is examined, along with his theology of providence in sustenance and government, in relation to miracles, and the dilemma of the existence of God and evil. Following that is an evaluation and application of the doctrine to the 9/11 terrorist attack on America. In Part II, a theological/doctrinal study is undertaken concerning the doctrine of resurrection. Hyper-preterism is examined, along with its leading proponents, and placed into interaction with Berkouwer’s views of the doctrine of the physical resurrection of the body at the eschaton. / Theology / M.Th. It argues about the eschatological understanding of time with regard to the afterlife, ancestors and the afterlife, Christ the eschaton and the incarnation of Christ as redeeming of the ancestors. Such a model of local theology can result from a comprehensive reflection based on the Scriptures. As such, this study suggests some principles and praxis that appropriately address mission in the African context. A Research Project Submitted to the Faculty of Education University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg for the Degree of Master of Education / THE COMMUNITY OF THE RESURRECTION'S INVOLVEMENT IN AFRICAN SCHOOLING ON THE WITWATERSRAND, FROM 1903 TO 1956 This research project is an historical reconstruction of the schools established and run by the Community of the Resurrection (CR) on the Witwatersrand from 1903 40 1956. The aim of this research is to contribute to knowledge and understanding of missionary education in South Africa, through a study of the educational work of this particular missionary body, as embodied in their schools. The report examines key aspects of the schools, including their financial and organizational structures, the education they offered and their ethos. The CR schools varied in physical size, numbers of pupils and level of sophistication, from the well established St Peter's Secondary School, to numerous one-roomed wood and iron shacks. Similarly, the products of these schools varied from well-known African leaders and academics to domestic servants. Although a definitive judgement on the merits of missionary education is not the focus of this study, the project concludes that the initial Eurocentric attitude of the CR towards Africans and their education was transformed to one of genuine sympathy and the CR brethren became leaders in the fight for equal education for Africans in the face of Government opposition. This project is based on primary source material located in the Church of the Province Archives of South Africa at the University of the Witwatersrand and is influenced by secondary sources such as historical works and theories on missionary education. as well as works by CR members themselves. / Andrew Chakane 2019

Visual pigment evolution and the paleobiology of early mammals

Auf der Basis von Fossilien wird angenommen, dass die ersten Säugetiere nachtaktiv waren. Diese Arbeit untersucht diese Hypothese mit bioinformatischen und molekularbiologischen Techniken. Der Fokus liegt auf dem Rhodopsin, ein Sehpigment im Wirbeltierauge, das für Sehen unter schlechten Lichtverhältnissen verantwortlich ist. Zunächst wurde das Rhodopsin der monotrematen Echidna, einem basalen Säugetier, sequenziert und mit zwei Mutanten mit Mutationen an Positionen 158 und 169 in vitro exprimiert. Die biochemische und funktionelle Charakterisierung ergab, dass das Echidna-Rhodopsin farbpigment-typische Charakteristika aufweist, was auf eine Expression auch in Zapfen hindeutet. Dies ist die erste Charakterisierung eines Rhodopsins eines nachtaktiven Tieres. Dann wurden anzestrale Rhodopsinsequenzen für die Knotenpunkte Amniota, Mammalia und Theria mithilfe der Maximum-Likelihood-Methode berechnet. Die in vitro Expression und biochemische und funktionelle Charakterisierung zeigt funktionale und rhodopsin-typische Sehpigmente. Das Mammalia- und Theria-Rhodopsin zeigen eine hohe Meta II Halbwertszeit. Dieses Ergebnis wird als eventuelle Anpassung an Sehen unter schlechten Lichtverhältnissen interpretiert, wobei, aufgrund von Unstimmigkeiten in der Literatur, Schlussfolgerungen auf ökologisch-bedingte Anpassungen basierend auf einzelnen Funktionstests problematisch sind, da die visuelle Signalkaskade ein sehr komplexes und durch viele Proteine vernetztes System darstellt. Zuletzt zeigen Selektionsanalysen, dass das Rhodopsin entlang der Theria-Linie positive Selektion auf nicht-synonyme Substitutionen erfahren hat, was zu Anpassungen in einem Protein führt. Der Fossilbericht belegt entlang dieser Linie mehrere Einnischungsevents in neue Lebensräume. Entlang der Mammalia-Linie wurde positive Selektion auf synonyme Substitutionen gemessen, was zu einer Zunahme an Rhodopsin-Molekülen führt und damit eine Anpassung an Sehen unter schlechten Lichtverhältnissen darstellt. / Based on information from the fossil record, the first mammals are thought to have been nocturnal. This thesis investigates this popular hypothesis using bioinformatic and molecular techniques, focusing on the rhodopsin, a visual pigment in the vertebrate eye that is responsible for vision at low-light levels. First, the rhodopsin gene of the monotreme echidna, a basal mammal, was sequenced and successfully expressed in vitro, together with two mutants with substitutions at sites 158 and 169. Biochemical and functional analyses revealed that the echidna rhodopsin displays cone-like characteristics, likely due to being also expressed in cones. With the echidna being nocturnal, this thesis comprises the first characterisation of a rhodopsin of a nocturnal animal. Second, ancestral rhodopsin sequences for the tetrapod nodes Amniota, Mammalia, and Theria were inferred using Maximum likelihood estimates. All expressed pigments were successfully expressed in vitro, functional and rod-like. Mammalia and Theria rhodopsins display a high meta II half life time, a pattern that is usually interpreted to facilitate better vision at low-light levels. However, due to inconsistency in the available data, the result also suggests that, with the visual signaling cascade being a complex and interconnected system, erecting ecological interpretations based on single biochemical and functional reactions is problematic. Third, selective constraint analyses performed on a set of tetrapod rhodopsin sequences indicate that positive selection on non-synonymous sites, was acting along the branch leading to Theria. This result reflects the rapid diversification into modern ecological habitats during the Triassic and Jurassic, as indicated by the fossil record. In addition, positive selection on synonymous sites, leading to an increase of rhodopsin molecules, was found along the branch leading to Mammalia and suggests adaptations to vision at low-light levels.

This movement of expectation suggests a completion of the fundamental ontology of the free volitional subject within an event like Resurrection. This hope in the event of the resurrection suggests a philosophical place in Ricœur's writings from 1947 to 1972. In the light of these writings, hope is the connector, a threshold theme, between philosophy and theology, that articulates these two disciplines in an excellent way. For Ricœur, Hope is not a theme that comes after the other themes, the idea that closes the system, but an impulse that opens the system, which breaks the closure of the system: it is a way to reopen what was improperly closed. Hope, in the end, unveils the aspects of reality and opens the transcendente dimension of the existence of man. To do so, we will analyze the writings of Paul Ricœur in the period suggested above, which does not prevent us from citing texts after the period, without the pretension, however, of trying to cover the whole trajectory of the hermeneutics of Ricœurian / A nossa tese consiste em mostrar que, em Ricœur, a esperança é um movimento da existência no evento da Ressurreição. Esse movimento de esperar que sugere um acabamento da ontologia fundamental do sujeito volitivo livre dentro de um evento como o da Ressurreição. Essa esperança no evento da ressurreição sugere um lugar filosófico nos escritos de Ricœur de 1947 a 1972. À luz desses escritos, a esperança é o conector, um tema limiar, entre filosofia e teologia, que articula de maneira excelente, essas duas disciplinas. Para Ricœur, A esperança não é um tema que vem depois dos outros temas, a ideia que fecha o sistema, mas um impulso que abre o sistema, que rompe o encerramento do sistema: é uma maneira de reabrir o que fora indevidamente fechado.
