Justice and the River: Community Connections to an Impaired Urban River in Salt Lake City

Local communities have the right to participate in decision-making about environmental resources near where they live. Local governments have tried to gather feedback from communities to help improve the decisions they make, but have not always done a good job getting feedback from minority or urban communities. This dissertation provides one step toward obtaining this kind of public input in a majority minority community surrounding the Jordan River in Salt Lake City. Children and adults participated in this research. I present findings from two surveys, from work with children, and from adult interviews to understand how this community relates to their local river, what they like and do not like about it, and what they would like to see improved. This research revealed that communities have both positive and negative views of the river, but overall see it as an important community resource that is highly valued. Communities would like to participate more in river decision-making and have suggestions for how they would like to see that happen. The results in this dissertation can help bridge the gap between local city government officials and this minority community to help improve the river environmental quality and connections to the community.

New Dimensions in Water Conservation; An Inter-animation of Writing and Water

Water is a finite resource which is increasingly valued as a commodity. This thesis explores the use and appreciation of water, in the context of community response and exchange. Its focus is a community writing practice, and in particular a project entitled new dimensions in Water Conversation based in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. This project was a non-crisis driven investigation into a wide range of interests in water. The central proposition of the thesis is that techno-scientific and broader cultural world views on water rarely connect, and that bringing them together reveals awkward tensions between specialist and non-specialist standpoints. These disparities are shown in the group writings and outcome of the project, which bring water provision into closer perspective. A story emerges from the project and its influences. It is one of material relationships to water over testings, tastings and visits to a water treatment works. It suggests links which would not normally be anticipated, for example between a regional bulk water supplier and a group of water writers. The study combines fiction and contemplation with critical analysis and the thesis crosses disciplinary boundaries, drawing on insights from critical cultural theory and the philosophy of science. The writing is performative rather than accumulative in nature, yet is a concrete record of the interplay between water users and water specialists, in a local and global dimension which includes the Northern Rivers, Australia more generally and Varanasi in India. Using this transcultural approach, it decentres theory and locates value in the situated contexts and views of different stakeholders in water, which range from sacred values to indifference. The work calls out for a way of thinking about water that is not yet in the public discourse. Through the practical connection of the project with an Australian water instrumentality, it draws in developments in contemporary water management, and raises questions and doubts about how instrumentalist and market values have come to dominate imaginings of a global water future. At the same time it points to the importance of putting the values of the arts and humanities into practice in the increasingly inter-disciplinary environment in which the resource of water is managed and maintained.

Neural network based decision support framework for the assessment and management of freshwater stream habitats.

Modelling of stream macroinvertebrate communities has been widely accepted as an interesting and powerful tool to support water quality assessment and management. Stream Decision Support Framework (SDSF) offers an alternative approach to the current statistical models as Australian River Assessment Scheme (AusRivAs) for the derivation of scientific basis to support management applications regarding fresh water systems. Implementation of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) offers a possibility to overcome constraints of the statistical methods in dealing with high nonlinearity of stream data. This thesis includes several case studies illustrating application of Self Organising Map (SOM) and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks to various tasks involving analysis, assessment and prediction of stream macroinvertebrates in three Australian states. The data for this study have been provided by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources (NR&M), EPA Victoria and the Department of Land and Water Conservation, New South Wales (NSW). SDSF approach utilises predictive models for both 'referential' and 'dirty-water' approaches. Applicability and high accuracy of ANN models for the purpose of prediction both occurrence of individual taxa and taxonomic richness of stream macroinvertebrates have been demonstrated using data from Victoria and NSW. A comprehensive analysis of salinity sensitivity of stream macroinvertebrate has been demonstrated using both types of ANNs plus statistical methods, and pressure specific Salinity Index was suggested as a measurement of changes within macroinvertebrate communities in response to the secondary salinisation. Scenario analysis of the combined effect of increasing salinity and nutrient load demonstrated predictability and ecological meaningfulness of the Salinity Index. Application of SOM has been demonstrated using the data from Queensland and Victoria in order to analyse natural variability of macroinvertebrate communities between reference sites. SOM component planes provided a valuable insight into the relationships between abiotic variables (as water quality and geoclimatic factors) and distribution of taxa and trophic structure of macroinvertebrate communities. Potential of SOM as data exploration tool has been also demonstrated for the analysis of the output of scenario simulation in order to understand the difference in response to salinisation in different sites. Flexibility and potential of SDSF have been illustrated by using the combination of SOM and MLP, and combination of ANNs with statistical methods. Application of both SOM and Canonical Correspondence Analysis allowed the extraction of additional information and provided convenient visualisation of the relationships between water quality factors and the structure of macroinvertebrate communities. In general, SDSF provides convenient, flexible and accurate approach for the analysis, assessment and prediction of stream biota. In addition to the freedom from the limitations inherent to the traditional statistical methods it allows many more options than currently used modelling frameworks, namely: highly accurate predictions using both 'referential' and 'dirty-water' approaches, sensitivity analysis, scenario analysis and pattern exploration using SOM. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, 2005.

Plant recolonization following dam removal : a phytometer experiment

<p>In the spring of 2007 the Kuba Dam in Nätra Stream was removed for restoration purposes, mainly to give free passage to migrating fish. This action gave an opportunity to study the effects of dam removal on organisms both on land and in water, a type of study which is in demand for planning purposes of future dam removals. This study focuses on the effects upon the vegetation along the stream where the former reservoir was situated. Willow cuttings and sunflower seeds were used as phytometers to assess the growth conditions one year after removal at three different elevation levels at four different sites along the Nätra Stream. The reaches studied were the former reservoir of Kuba Dam (Site A), the area just downstream of this former dam (Site B), further upstream in the reservoir of the existing Nyfors Dam (Site C), and even further upstream at Myreforsen, a reference area not affected by dams (Site D). Willow cuttings and sunflower seeds were planted at three different riparian levels at the sites in June and left to grow until August when growth results were collected. Many of the cuttings had died but statistically significant differences between sites could still be detected. They showed that the former reservoir shorelines in Kuba (Site A) had a plant growth significantly higher than the other regulated site. In other words, it was no longer equal to an existing reservoir but not yet similar to a free-flowing reach. The western side of the stream at this site had a higher growth than the eastern side and also higher than all the other sites. As for the three levels, the results showed a higher growth at the lowest elevation level at site A than all at the other levels and sites. This suggests that a combination of good access to sunlight and nutrients and fine-grade moist substrate results in a good growing conditions nearer the water in this former reservoir. The results for the sunflower seeds showed that the reference reach had a higher colonization success than the other sites.</p> / <p>Utrivningen av Kubadammen i Nätraån våren 2007 gav möjlighet att studera och följa upp hur en sådan förändring påverkar organismer på land och i vatten både uppströms och nedströms den tidigare dammen. Phytoplankton Communities in Temperate Rivers

The structure of phytoplankton communities was examined seasonally across five rivers with a focus on small cells and their relative importance. Picophytoplankton (0.2-2 μm), previously considered insignificant in rivers, reached densities as high as those observed in lakes and oceans (~ 10e4-10e5 cells/mL). Their relative importance was not a function of trophic state with the highest contribution to algal biomass found in the most eutrophic river. Body size distributions were analyzed from both chlorophyll-a size fractions and taxonomic enumerations; no significant effect of river or season was detected, suggesting that phytoplankton size distribution is not a useful metric of change in rivers. Unlike lake ecosystems, the rivers were uniformly dominated by small cells (< 20 μm). Taxonomic analyses of the seasonal succession did not reveal a common periodicity of particular divisions (e.g. diatoms). However, strong dominance was more typical of eutrophic rivers even though taxa richness was similar.

Distributions and variations of dissolved organic carbon in the Taiwan Strait and Taiwanese rivers

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is one of the largest pools of carbon in the ocean, and is of the same size as the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Estuaries connecting the land and the ocean are one of the most important DOC sources to the ocean, and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Because of their complex chemical, physical, geological and biological properties, estuaries have become rich ecological environment. In this study, we investigated the seasonal distributions of DOC in the Taiwan Strait (TS) and Taiwanese rivers, aiming to understand the distributions and variations of DOC in different seasons. The results show that DOC concentrations are generally the highest in the upper estuary, and then decrease downstream due to mixing with the low DOC seawater. The process of river flow constantly accumulates terrestrial material, and the DOC shows positive correlations with Chl. a, CH4 and BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), suggesting that biological activities and pollutions could be sources of DOC in the estuary. The DOC concentrations (salinity<1) varied in dry (Nov.-Apr.) and wet (May-Oct.) seasons with ranges of 42-1185 £gM (mean=245¡Ó254£gM; n=32) and 18-565 £gM (mean=183¡Ó151£gM; n=24), respectively. The total DOC flux of 25 rivers is 87.8 Gg C/yr, which can be translated to the fluxes of all rivers in Taiwan to be 101.9 Gg C/yr. The amount of DOC flux in Taiwan is only about 0.07% of the tropical area, but the per unit area flux (3.92 gC /m2 /yr) is almost twice those of the tropical rivers (2.13 gC /m2 /yr). In Taiwan, the population density and land use are higher than the world average. Consequently, the impacts of the environment by human activities reveal the utmost export of DOC, and need further investigation. Next, in the TS, the DOC shows significant negative correlations with Sigma-T, and the distributions of DOC are mainly controlled by physical mixing in both winter and summer. In the western TS, DOC concentration is relatively high, compared to the eastern part, and is because of low temperature and salinity, but high DOC coastal China current flowing from north to south. DOC concentration decreases with increasing depth owing to the intrusion at depth by the Kuroshio, which contains relatively low DOC. In winter, the import of coastal China current brings more nutrients from north to south, and supports the growth of bacteria which depletes the DOC and oxygen. As the result, DOC decomposition rate is higher in winter than in summer. The TS¡¦s DOC fluxes in summer (northern TS: 3.85¡Ñ1012mol C/yr¡Fsouthern TS: 3.75¡Ñ1012mol C/yr) are higher than in winter (northern TS: 3.69¡Ñ1012mol C/yr¡Fsouthern TS: 2.84¡Ñ1012mol C/yr). Main differences are due to the prevailing southwest monsoon winds in summer transporting more water from the South China Sea to the TS, and the river discharge brings more terrigenous organic matters into the TS. Therefore, the DOC export in summer is higher than in winter.

The spatial and temporal variability and budget of suspended sediment in Taiwan major rivers

¡@¡@Sediment loads of Taiwan rivers have increased in recent years because of frequently recurring typhoons. In addition to the dry and wet seasons causing sever erosion and deposition of the riverbed, the long-term records from 1967 to 2009 of suspended sediment concentration and daily discharge observed by the Water Resource Agency in Taiwan Rivers were used in this study. ¡@¡@To understand the sediment deposition or erosion in the rivers, we need to find how the discharge and sediment load interact with each other under the natural and human influences. The hydrological data we used in this study were from Water Resources Agency¡¦s annual reports, including the Danshui River, the Lanyang River, the Zhuoshui River, the Beinan River, and the Gaoping River. ¡@¡@High turbidity happen when sediment concentration exceeds 40 g/L. Judging by this threshold, taking upstream stations of the Zhuoshui River for example, the Nei-Mao-Pu Station (1973-2009) reached this threshold 6 times, Bao-Shih Bridge Station (2004-2009) 19 times, and Yun-Feng Bridge Station (1995-2009) 19 times. But Yen-Ping Bridge Station (2004-2009), which is at the middle part of Zhuoshui River, has never reached the threshold, became the erosion rate and sedimentation rate are balanced here. Chi-Chou Bridge Station (2000-2009) at the downstream reached the threshold for 11 times too. ¡@¡@According to the river graded profile, in the Danshui River, obvious erosion occurred at the Liu-Kwei Bridge Station in 2000, the Po Bridge Station in 2001, and San-Hsia (2) Station in 2004 and 2007. In the Zhuoshui River, significant deposition took place at the Yun-Feng Bridge Station in 2006 and 2010. In the Gaoping River, deposition occurred at the A-Chyi-Ba Bridge Station in 2000, while erosion occurred at Liu-Kwei Station in 2001 and at the A-Chyi-Ba Bridge Station in 2007 and 2008. ¡@¡@Above results show that the major sediments are deposited upstream, forming a temporary sediment storage source region, such as at Li-Lin Bridge Station, Liu-Kwei Station, and Yun-Feng Bridge Station at the Gaoping River, all of which have reached the threshold when a typhoon comes. Investigating daily rainfall data from Taichung Weather Station in 2005, we find that besides typhoon influences, when the rainfall is exceeding 200 mm High turbidity events would occur in the Jhoushuei River. ¡@¡@According to our study, we find that most sediment deposits at the upper reaches, forming temporary sediment storages, so when a typhoon comes, we can see the sediment downstream is often mixed with the sediment coming from upstream storages. That is because the slope in the upper reaches is steeper, and heavy rain makes the temporary deposit easy to erode. On the contrary, the slope in the lower reaches is more gentle so it is easier for sediment to deposit, which is the reason why the stations at downstream often reach the threshold. When the extreme weather occurs, the temporary sediment storages along the entire river course become the source regions to release the sediment out to the sea.
