Avaliação do uso de um polietileno de alta densidade e baixo peso molecular oxidado como agente de compatibilização em asfalto modificado com copolímero SBS / Analysis of the use of an oxidized, high-density polyethylene with low molecular weight as a compatibilizing agent in asphalt binders modified with SBS copolymer

O copolímero SBS é o aditivo mais empregado mundialmente na modificação de ligantes asfálticos, por melhorar diversas de suas características. Um dos principais problemas deste tipo de formulação é a separação de fases, que pode ser minimizada com a incorporação de aditivos. Um novo polietileno de alta densidade e baixo peso molecular oxidado (com denominação comercial TITAN 9686) foi utilizado nesta pesquisa, com o objetivo de testar a hipótese de que a adição de proporções adequadas deste aditivo possa melhorar as características reológicas do asfalto+SBS. O experimento laboratorial foi delineado com base na técnica de experimentos com misturas, englobando um total de nove formulações compostas com asfalto, SBS e TITAN. O teor de SBS variou entre 0 e 5% em peso e o de polietileno variou entre 0 e 2% em peso. Foi utilizado óleo aromático no teor de 4% em peso para todas as nove misturas. As misturas foram analisadas em três condições de envelhecimento: virgem, curto prazo (na estufa RTFO) e longo prazo (na estufa PAV). Foram realizados os seguintes ensaios reológicos: (i) de cisalhamento em regime oscilatório em diferentes condições de temperatura e frequência (para medida do módulo complexo e do ângulo de fase, usados na determinação do grau de desempenho, no cálculo dos parâmetros G*/sen(δ) e G*.sen(δ) e na construção de curvas-mestre), (ii) de viscosidade Brookfield, (iii) de fluência e recuperação sob múltiplas tensões (para medida do percentual de recuperação e da compliância não-recuperável), (iv) de varredura de amplitude linear (para cálculo do parâmetro a f e para ajuste do modelo de fadiga) e (v) de estabilidade à estocagem. Acerca das características escolhidas para mensurar a melhora ou piora das propriedades das misturas asfalto+SBS com a adição de TITAN, podem ser feitas as seguintes observações: (i) a estabilidade à estocagem é melhorada com a adição de TITAN, em particular no teores entre 1 e 2%; (ii) a sensibilidade ao envelhecimento tanto a curto quanto a longo prazos diminui com a adição de TITAN; (iii) a adição de TITAN aumenta a resistência à deformação permanente, à luz dos parâmetros Jnr e R e aumenta a sensibilidade dos ligantes asfálticos modificados com SBS a mudanças bruscas nos níveis de tensão aplicados; e (iv) a adição de TITAN contribui com o aumento da resistência à fadiga, à luz dos parâmetros Nf , a baixos níveis de deformação, e af , e a prejudica reduzindo o parâmetro Nf a altos níveis de deformação e aumentando a temperatura crítica de fadiga ou o parâmetro G*.sen(δ). Tendo por base estas evidências, é possível concluir que a adição de TITAN, em linhas gerais, melhorou a estabilidade dos ligantes asfálticos modificados com até 5,0% de SBS. Com base nas análises realizadas, é possível afirmar que teores da ordem de 1 a 2% de TITAN, para teores de SBS entre 3,0 e 5,0%, são recomendáveis, à luz das propriedades, índices e parâmetros analisados neste trabalho. / The SBS copolymer is the most widely used additive in asphalt binder modification, since it enhances many of the properties of the original material. A critical problem that arises from this type of modification is phase separation, which can be minimized by adding other modifiers to the formulation. A new oxidized, high-density polyethylene with low molecular weight (commercial designation of \"TITAN 9686\") was used in the study with the purpose of verifying the hypothesis that the addition of suitable contents of this modifier can improve the rheological properties of the SBS-modified binder. The laboratory matrix of formulations was based on the experiments with mixtures, and nine types of materials were prepared with asphalt binder, SBS and TITAN. The SBS contents ranged from 0 to 5% by weight, whereas the polyethylene contents ranged from 0 to 2% by weight. These formulations also contained 4% of aromatic oil by weight. Three aging conditions were selected: unaged, short-term aged in the rolling thin-film oven (RTFO) and long-term aged in the pressurized aging vessel (PAV). The following tests were carried out: (i) dynamic oscillatory shear at different temperatures and frequencies of loading for the determination of the complex modulus, the phase angles and the master curves, as well as the performance grades and the numerical values of the parameters G*/sin(δ) and G*.sen(δ); (ii) rotational viscosity; (iii) creep and recovery at multiple stress levels for the determination and the percent recovery and the nonrecoverable compliance; (iv) linear amplitude sweep, in order to calculate the parameter a f and fit the fatigue model to the data; and (v) storage stability. With respect to the characteristics used in the evaluation of the properties of the AC+SBS mixtures after the addition of TITAN, the following observations can be made: (i) storage stability is improved when TITAN is added to the formulation, especially at contents ranging from 1 to 2%; (ii) the sensitivity to the short-term and long-term aging processes decreased with the incorporation of TITAN; (iii) the changes in the R and the Jnr values indicate that the addition of TITAN makes the asphalt binder more resistant to rutting, and also increases the sensitivity of the SBS-modified binders to sudden increases in the stress level; and (iv) the presence of TITAN in the material leads to an increase in the fatigue resistance as based on the parameters Nf and af at low strain levels and the increases in the critical fatigue temperature and the parameter G*.sen(δ). With reference to these evidences, it is possible to conclude that the addition of TITAN generally improves the storage stability of the SBS-modified binders with no more than 5% of copolymer by weight. Based on the results of the present study, it is possible to say that percentages between 1 and 2% of TITAN by weight are recommended for SBS contents between 3 and 5% by weight.

Investigação da relação entre parâmetros da compactação giratória e de deformação permanente em misturas asfálticas densas / Investigation of relationship between the gyratory compaction and rutting parameters of asphalt mixtures

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo estudar a relação entre parâmetros de compactação e de deformação permanente à luz dos ensaios de compactação giratória Superpave ® e de ensaios de compressão uniaxial estática e dinâmica. Foram estudadas 8 misturas asfálticas com a mesma granulometria (Faixa C) e tipo de agregado mineral (granito) porém variou-se o ligante asfáltico (CAP 50/70 e CAP 50/70+SBS), o volume de vazios (4% e 7%) e a adição de cal hidratada. A partir dos resultados do ensaio de compactação observou-se que a inclinação das curvas de compactação das misturas compactadas a 7% foram mais acentuadas do que as de 4% e os parâmetros incidentais deste ensaio foram sensíveis à presença de cal e à variação do asfalto das misturas testadas. Quanto aos resultados dos ensaios de creep estático e dinâmico, notou-se que as misturas com Vv de 4% e as com asfalto modificado apresentam menor suscetibilidade à deformação permanente, no entanto, essas vantagens do asfalto modificado foram observadas somente nos ensaios de creep dinâmico. No que se refere às relações entre os parâmetros de compactação e de deformação permanente, os ajuste não se mostraram promissores como verificado pela qualidade dos ajustes (R2) exceto para algumas relações com CDI e TDIm. / This research aims to study relations between compaction and permanent deformation by means of Superpave® gyratory compaction and static and dynamic creep tests. Thus, eight asphalt mixtures were evaluated which were composed by same type (granite) and gradation (dense) of mineral aggregate but two types of asphalt binder (Pen 50/70 AC and Pen 50/70+SBS AC), two different levels of air voids (4% and 7%) and the addition of hydrated lime. Compaction results indicated that curve slopes of 7% air void asphalt mixtures were stronger than the 4% ones, and compaction parameters were sensitive to lime addition and asphalt type change. Static and dynamic creep test results indicated that 4% air void and modified asphalt mixtures presented lower susceptibility to rutting, but, these modified asphalt advantages were observed only in dynamic creep tests. In regard to relation between compaction and rutting parameters, linear models did not fit accurately, excepting some CDI and TDIm ones.

Structuration de nanocomposites à partir de copolymères à blocs : expérience et modélisation / Structuring nanocomposites from copolymers block : experience and modeling

Les copolymères à blocs sont des matériaux très intéressants en raison de leur capacité à s’auto-organiser pour former des domaines de quelques dizaines de nanomètres. Cette organisation peut être mise à profit pour obtenir des matériaux hybrides organiques/inorganiques dans lesquels la phase inorganique peut être structurée dans un des domaines plutôt que répartie de façon aléatoire. Ceci peut conférer des propriétés particulières aux copolymères hybrides. Notre travail de thèse s’inscrit dans cette problématique. Des copolymères à blocs ont été modifiés soit par greffage en solution de molécules organiques/inorganiques du type POSS réactif (polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane), soit par mélange en solution ou à l’état fondu de POSS non réactif. Les copolymères triblocs considérés sont du type SBS (styrène-butadiène-styrène) et SEBS-g-MA (styrène-éthylène-butène-styrène greffé anhydride maléique). L’ensemble de ces copolymères a été caractérisé expérimentalement afin de déterminer leur morphologie et leur comportement thermo-mécanique. En parallèle une approche théorique a été proposée, basée sur la modélisation moléculaire de ces copolymères à l’échelle mésoscale. La méthode sélectionnée ‘Dissipative Particle Dynamics’ a permis de modéliser la morphologie de nos copolymères avec succès ainsi que celle de nos matériaux hybrides modifiés par les POSS. Ces derniers peuvent être dispersés à l’échelle moléculaire ou au contraire former des agrégats, selon le procédé de mise en œuvre et la structure chimique des POSS. / Experimental approaches and a modeling method have been carried out in parallele. The simulation method was used firstly to confirm the experimental results, and then will be applied to more complex nanocomposites. A series of hybrid systems based on triblock copolymer of polystyrene-butadiene-polystyrene (SBS) grafted with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(POSS) molecules with a dimethylsiloxy group (DMIPOSS) were synthesized by a hydrosilation method. The characteristics on incorporation of an unreactive POSS with constituent cyclohexyl (CyPOSS) in SBS matrix have been compared with above systems. The nanocomposites obtained were analyzed by atomic force microscopy, Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray scattering and dynamic mechanical.The same strategy has been carried out on polystyrene-b-poly (ethylene-co-butylene)-b-polystyrene-g-maleic anhydride (SEBS-g-MA) with other type of POSS. Dynamic particles dissipative (DPD) simulation methods in Materials Studio (Accelrys) were employed to study morphology of SB, SBS, SEBS and hybrid system. In this mesoscopic method, the polymer is simplified as a series of connecting beads which contains one or more monomer units. And all monomer units interact with each other following Newtonian Equations of Motion.

Praktiska och Ekonomiska förutsättningar för Solarblinds : En preliminär studie av en Solarblinds prototyp baserad på de praktiska och ekonomiska perspektivet.

This study addresses the use of a Solar blind system (SBS) instead of ordinary glass used on windows of buildings. To investigate the effects of using an SBS for electricity energy generation a fictitious wooden house as a prototype, a real building needed to be constructed. The purpose of experimental studies is to measure the effect and asses the performance by examining the optimal angle of inclination and evaluating the profitability of SBS. To calculate the electricity energy generation by it is then expected that general renovations of a building will be used in the system. To perform the different scenario for each inclination angle, the simulation software PVsyst was used where the measurements are validated according to the simulation results to confirm that models are suitable and which inclination angles produced the most electricity. After the validation process, a financial assessment, and an annual electricity production of the system for a fictitious building where SBS is applied were performed. The result for the annual electricity production at different angles of inclination turned out to be 2457 kWh/year at 30, 2235 kWh/year at 60   and 1781 kWh/year at 90 . The optimal angle of inclination was 30  , which also has the highest electricity production compared to the other angles. Electricity production does not differ much with the inclination angle of 60. The simulation for the annual electricity production was examined for ten windows in opposite directions. The investment cost for the use of SBS was extraordinarily high, landing at 28,120 SEK/kW. The reason for this high investment cost is that it includes high material costs and that the area for SBS systems is low, which is 1,696 m². The reason is that the low area in m² leads to a lower electricity generation and the higher the area m² leads to higher electricity generation, which turns into affecting the profitability and electricity production.

This thesis deals with the modification of asphalt binder 50/70 with fast reacting SBS. This is a relatively new additive that should be able to improve the binder properties during mixing of the asphalt mix at the plant. In the theoretical part, the issue of asphalt-mixing plant and polymer modification additives is presented. Furthermore, the test methods used such as needle penetration, softening point, determination of the elastic recovery, DSR and MSCR are described. Several modified binder samples were developed for the tests, in which mixing temperature, mixing time and SBS content were combined. The results of each test were compared and evaluated at the end of the thesis.

Este trabalho apresenta alguns resultados de pesquisa laboratorial compreendendo projeto de dosagem, comportamento mecânico da mistura SMA (Stone Matrix Asphalt - Matriz Pétrea Asfáltica), bem como, aspectos executivos relacionados ao desenvolvimento de um trecho experimental em SMA para revestimento de pavimentos. Os resultados de laboratório obtidos mostram que o SMA é um revestimento asfáltico que pode apresentar bom desempenho sob cargas pesadas em climas quentes, pois estas misturas são muito resistentes à deformação permanente, mas preservam a flexibilidade como os concretos asfálticos densos. O SMA é uma solução bem conhecida para tráfego pesado na Europa e mais recentemente na América do Norte. O SMA também tem sido empregado para aumento de aderência em pista molhada e para redução de ruído. / This research presents laboratory test results of mixture design, mechanical behavior of SMA (Stone Matrix Asphalt), as well as some construction aspects regarding to development of Brazilian road trial section as a new bituminous surface course to pavement construction or maintenance.The laboratory results show that SMA can perform very well in hot climate under heavy load conditions due to the mixture to be very resistant against permanent deformation but still flexible like dense asphalt concrete. The SMA is a well Known solution for heavy traffic in Europe and, more recently, in North America. The SMA is also employed to increase the adherence in wet conditions and for noise reduction.

O uso de asfaltos modificados com polímeros tem crescido significativamente nas últimas décadas em função do aumento da densidade de tráfego, da carga por eixo nos veículos e da pressão dos pneus. Estes ligantes proporcionam o aumento a vida útil e a redução do custo de manutenção das rodovias. Os polímeros mais utilizados na modificação de asfalto são os copolímeros em bloco de estireno-butadienoestireno. Esta tese avaliou os efeitos de diferentes agentes compatibilizantes (óleos) e agentes de ligação no comportamento reológico de misturas asfálticas modificadas com copolímeros de estireno-butadieno-estireno, bem como a influência da sua estrutura, se linear ou radial. Para isto foram realizados análises convencionais e testes em reômetro de cisalhamento dinâmico. Os dados obtidos permitiram evidenciar a eficácia do óleo de xisto como agente compatibilizante, proporcionando excelente dispersão do polímero na matriz asfáltica e estabilidade a estocagem a altas temperaturas. Este óleo apresenta-se como uma opção tecnicamente viável para o óleo aromático atualmente em uso no mercado. Foi também verificado que o uso de enxofre como agente de ligação tem um efeito altamente positivo nas propriedades do ligante modificado, com significativa redução da tan ō, da deformação após aplicação de cargas cíclicas e elevação do módulo complexo, o que contribui para obtenção de pavimentos com maior resistência a deformação e ao trincamento por fadiga. / The use of polymer modified asphalts has grown significantly in the last decades due to the increase in traffic density, axle loading in vehicles and tyre pressure. These binders favor the increase of pavement life and the reduction of its maintenancement costs. The most used polymer for asphalt modification is styrene-butadiene-styrene blocked copolymers. This thesis evaluated the effects of different compatibilizers and crosslinkers on rheological behavior of styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer modified asphalt binders, as well as the influence of its structure, linear or radial. Binder’s characteristics were determined by conventional analysis and tests in dinamic shear rheometer. Data obtained provided evidence of the positive effect of sulfur as crosslinker in modified binders properties, with high tan ō reduction, complex modulus increase and deformation reduction after application of cyclic loads, characteristics that turn possible the existence of pavements with greater rutting and fatigue resistance. It was also verified the shale oil efficacy as a compatibilizer agent, providing an excellent polymer dispersion inside asphalt matrix and a stable storage binder at high temperatures. This oil can be considered as a technical available option to aromatic oil presently in use at pavement industry.

An Exploration of a State Mandated Health Education Program

Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is one of the most violent forms of physical child abuse. In 2007, the State of Ohio enacted a health education mandate known as Claire's law. Claire's law requires all birthing hospitals to provide SBS education to mothers prior to their discharge. This law is the result of public demand and advocacy initiatives; however, it was not clear how the mandate was developed or whether or not the mandate and subsequent educational programs have had an impact on efforts to prevent SBS. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the state of Ohio's processes involved in creating legislation to mandate SBS education. Data were collected through document reviews and interviews with SBS workgroup members (n = 5). The precede-proceed program planning model provided the conceptual framework to examine the participatory process involved in the development of the mandate from its beginning. The findings of the study showed that SBS workgroup members believed mandated education would affect SBS incidence and would ensure that mothers receive SBS education in Ohio hospitals during their birth experience. The findings also demonstrated a lack of a formal program planning methodology and no public inclusion in the development of the mandate or its required health education component. The state of Ohio has an additional means to ensure widespread education on SBS through the creation of this mandate. Statutory requirements provide opportunities for health professionals to educate the public on the effects of shaking a baby, resulting in a key implication for social change. Legislation focused on health education should be multifaceted and include varying layers of intervention.

Effect of Nanoparticle Inclusions and Solvent Annealing on Block Copolymer Morphology

Using block copolymers for large-area periodic structure fabrication is of great interest because of the potential for low fabrication costs and simplicity of the processing. The concept is that by selective inclusion of the nanoparticles into one of the blocks of a self-assembling copolymer, the nanoparticles are forced into a defined spatial arrangement determined by the phase morphology of the copolymer. Although copolymers can form well defined structures, they inherently have a 'polycrystalline' structure in the bulk, meaning that there is no long-range order of the domains. This thesis addresses both the effect of inclusion of the nanoparticles and the long range ordering of block copolymer domains. The first part of the thesis focuses on the study of the effect of nanoparticle inclusions on the phase morphology of the poly(styrene-butadiene) diblock and poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) triblock copolymers. For gold inclusions, it was found that even at relatively low concentrations of inclusions (less than 1 wt./vol.%) the block copolymer phase morphology is altered from that of the native copolymer. By contrast to the block copolymer-gold system, no significant changes in bulk morphology is observed for similar fullerene concentrations. In the second part of the thesis, the evolution of the order in cylinder forming poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) triblock copolymer thin films as a function of the type of solvent vapor, exposure time to the saturated vapors and substrate surface energy is discussed. Solvent vapors of dimethoxyethane, ethyl acetate and cyclohexanone were found to be the most effective for our polymer films. Solvent vapors differing in their selectivity towards the block copolymer domains have different kinetics of ordering which is explained in terms of the difference in the interaction of the solvent between the two different copolymer blocks.

The Relationship Between 6th Grade Students

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between 6th grade students&rsquo / problem solving achievement scores after completing instruction on problem solving and their mathematics achievement mean scores related to Least Common Multiple (LCM), Greatest Common Factor (GCF), Sets and Whole Numbers topics obtained throughout the semester. In addition, the relationship between 6th grade students&rsquo / problem solving achievement scores after completing instruction on problem solving and their actual mathematics net scores obtained from Level Determination Exam (SBS) was investigated. In total, 170 sixth grade students from a private school in Istanbul participated in the study. The data were collected via three sources namely / Problem Solving Achievement Tests (PSATs), Mathematics Achievement Tests (MATs) and SBS exam. Quantitative methods were utilized to examine the research questions and a correlational design was used. The results of the statistical analysis showed that there was a significant positive correlation between students&rsquo / problem solving achievement scores after completing instruction on problem solving and their mathematics achievement mean scores obtained through out the semester related to LCM, GCF, Sets and Whole Numbers Topics. In addition, the findings of the analysis showed that there was a significant large positive correlation between the problem solving achievement scores after completing instruction on problem solving and students&rsquo / actual mathematics net scores obtained from SBS.
