Hrabalova Příliš hlučná samota v anglickém překladu / Bohumil Hrabal's Too Loud a Solitude in the English Translation

Michalíková, Adéla January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is deals with Hrabal's novella Too Loud a Solitude in the English translation and its reception. First, it briefly describes Hrabal's life and work in the context of the co called normalization period in Czechoslovakia, focusing on the novella itself and the three variations of the original Czech text. Before the translation analysis, the possible source text for the translation is discussed since the endings of the Czech text and the English translation are considerably different. The source of the difference was determined by consulting the French translation and related commentary. The analysis compares the ending of the original with the endings of the English and the French translation, translation of proper names and three selected sections of the Czech and the English text. Afterwards, the thesis describes the reception of the novella in Czech and English literature and also readers' reviews at the Goodreads website. The analysis and the reception are assessed on the basis of the theory of cultural manipulation. The most important achievements are: identifying the source text for the English translation, description of translation method and shifts and discussion of differences between the Czech and the English attitude to the novella.

Gambus, Aurélie 17 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Vidas no singular : noções sobre "mulheres sos" no Brasil contemporaneo / Singular lives : notions on "lone women" in the contemporary Brazil

Gonçalves, Eliane 24 August 2007 (has links)

In this thesis, I explore how contemporary notions of ¿single women¿ are constructed in three different contexts: Population studies (Demography), the Brazilian media, and the narratives of middle class childless women living alone in the city of Goiânia. In population studies, women living alone are considered in the discussion of ¿new families¿ and the increasing number of ¿single person households¿ observed beginning in the 1970s. The media emphasizes the ¿evidence¿ of the high proportion of ¿single¿ women in Brazilian metropolitan areas, drawing attention to their ways of life, in what is seen as a worldwide phenomenon. The debate becomes relevant in the Brazilian social sciences and draws the attention of the news in a process in which living alone is often associated with the idea of being single (unmarried), understood as the absence of partnership and sexual life, and therefore translated as ¿loneliness¿. Several notions attributed to single women in the three different contexts resonate with ideas proclaimed by feminism, where education and professional and paid work are perceived as central to the autonomy of women. Regarding recurrent terminologies such as the ¿new woman¿, ¿independent¿ woman, ¿free¿ and ¿autonomous¿, etc, I question the potential connections between the production of the notion of the ¿single woman¿ and key ideas in feminist thinking / Doutorado / Ciencias Sociais / Doutor em Ciências Sociais

Ensamhet på särskilt boende (Säbo). : En kvalitativ intervjustudie. / Experience of loneliness in residential care.

Zara, Katalin January 2017 (has links)
Background: Involuntary loneliness has adverse effects on the physical and mental health of the elderly. Few interview studies have investigated older people's experience of loneliness in residential care. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to highlight thoughts about loneliness in individuals 70 years or older, living at nursing homes and their experience of loneliness related to the accommodation. Method: The study design was qualitative with an inductive approach. Semistructured interviews with 13 individuals 70-98 years old, was performed. The text was analyzed  and interpreted using qualitative content analysis. Result:  Five categories emerged; The move to the nursing home linked to loneliness, Individual aspects of loneliness, Loneliness and aging body, Significance of social factors for loneliness and Individual strategies to deal with loneliness.            Conclusion: Some older people were bothered by loneliness and asked for an increased community, in the context of meal, in the form of  group activities. It was common for the elderly with increasing age not to participate in all activities and instead chose to be for themselves, usually in a positive loneliness (solitude).

Éthique des soins palliatifs / Ethics in Palliative Care

Geschwind, Herbert 14 December 2015 (has links)
A coat is modestly covering the unwell body of a severely diseased patient who is aware that he/she is shortly going to die. To make it softer palliative care is prone to act as a substitute for curative medicine that is no longer effective in recovering the patient from the disease. In order to endow specificity, palliative care is evolving in the framework of curative care that is thought to result in more discomfort, harm and pain as far as both sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic tools are concerned. Women are thought to be more deeply adjusted for care giving that is likely to soothe pain and absorb the emotional, spiritual and anxiety shock that is getting ahead of death. Lay people, caregivers and philosophers as well as people concerned with religion do think that doing so would be able to convert death tragedy into a more serene episode that the previous one without any help issued from conditions that used to leave dying patients living in loneliness.

Being Alone Together : Spatial investigations on ways to live with loneliness

Minami, Sonoka January 2023 (has links)
In modern society, loneliness is often talked about as an undesirable thing and something that should be eliminated, which makes it obvious that many people are suffering from it.  Considering that the physical spaces we inhabit significantly shape our social interactions and relationships, this project aims to highlight the importance of spatial design in fostering connections with others beyond oneself. Specifically, the gaze is directed toward co-living. Slakthusområdet is a slaughter industrial area that is going to be developed from an industrial area into an urban district with lots of housing.  On the site, I have examined how spatial design can create a lifestyle on our own initiative and feel a sense of belonging in a new environment. Through personal observations, this project explores a way of life that accepts loneliness and seeks to live with it. In this project, I call this way of living “Being alone together”. By using physical models as the primary medium, I proposed a housing complex that offers diverse forms of living spaces to accommodate all residents. This new approach to communal living holds the potential to unlock new possibilities of life, particularly for urban dwellers. Furthermore, it offers a fresh and unique solution in response to the housing challenges faced in Stockholm.

Assessing the Reliability of Computer Simulation Modeling for Monitoring and Managing Indicators of Wilderness Solitude in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Kiser, Brett Christopher 17 July 2007 (has links)
Several studies in the field of outdoor recreation management and planning have used computer simulation modeling to demonstrate its utility as a tool to help managers monitor encounters and similar visitor use-related indicators of quality. However, previous applications of computer simulation modeling to outdoor recreation planning and management have generally done little to assess the reliability, or precision, of model estimates. The purpose of this research is to explore several questions concerning the reliability of computer simulation model estimates for monitoring wilderness solitude-related indicators of quality. In particular, can reliable estimates of solitude-related indicators be generated for low use recreation environments, such as backcountry and wilderness areas? Is there a spatial component to questions about the reliability of computer simulation estimates for low use visitor landscapes? The research presented in this thesis examines the reliability of computer simulation estimates of wilderness solitude indicators that account for the timing and location of hiking and camping encounters in the backcountry of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This study was designed to model visitor use and inter-group encounters in the Cosby and Big Creek areas of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which are located within the park's proposed wilderness area. Two primary types of information about visitor use in the study area were collected to construct the computer simulation model in this study. First, information was gathered about the amount of visitation to the study area; second, information was collected about visitors' travel routes within the study area. Three alternative methods were used to estimate the number of replications needed to obtain desired levels of precision for the visitor-based and spatially based computer simulation model outputs. The results suggest that computer simulation models of visitor use can generate precise estimates for a small to moderate number of visitor-based and spatially-based outputs. However, there are constraints to generating precise estimates of use-related outputs as the number of outputs estimated simultaneously becomes large. This challenge is particularly pronounced in cases where at least some of the outputs are derived for low use attractions, trails, or camping locations. / Master of Science
