No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Adelia Cristina Fernandes Silva.pdf: 305496 bytes, checksum: f82a7e3cbe5bde850f4a8f4687e0733f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-12-18 / The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) stands out in Brazil because of its economic and, above all social importance, being an essential source of fiber of the human daily diet. To quantify the fiber content and the genetic variability in Brazilian genotypes is very important because it can ensure the success of breeding programs, evaluating the relative efficiency of the methods for conducting segregating populations. The objective of this research was to compare the genetic potential of segregating populations of the common bean submitted to different breeding methods for the character of crude fiber content and grain yield. Families were obtained by hybridization between the lines CNFC 7812 and CNFC 7829 with 12.7% and 17% of fiber content respectively. The families were conducted by three different breeding methods: Bulk, Bulk within F2 and SSD until the F7 generation. The design to analyze the families was the 14x14 lattice with three replications, conducted in two locations: Santo Antonio/GO and Ponta Grossa/PR. The crude fiber content and grain yield were evaluated in all families from the three methods. The components of variance, genetic and phenotypical parameters were then estimated from the mean square expected values. Based on the results, it can be concluded that for the crude fiber character and the grain yield, the best method was the Bulk within families, which generated the greatest number of families of high rank characteristic. In this research, this method therefore was superior for both SSD and Bulk methods. It was observed among the evaluated families obtained from the crossing CNFC 7812 x CNFC 7829, enough genetic variability to be explored for the characters of crude fiber content and grain yield.

Etudes des propriétés physiques et chimiques de la surface des substrats de Silicium après découpe dans les applications aux cellules solaires photovoltaïques / Studies of the physical and chemical properties of the surface of the silicon substrate after cutting in applications to solar cells

Souidi, Ramzi 26 June 2018 (has links)
For photovoltaic industry (PV), the optimization of cutting silicon ingot into wafers represents both an economic and a scientific issue. Economic challenge in that it is important to reduce the loss of material induced by cutting. Scientific issue in that it is necessary to understand the impact of sawing on the quality of silicon near the surface. This PhD research work aims to characterize the nature and extent of the damage generated by an innovative cutting technique using diamond wires. A major objective is to evaluate the thickness of the subsurface damage layer (called SSD). In order to characterize the SSD, physical and chemical investigations as a function of depth were performed on either as-cut surface, bevel or transverse sectioned samples or by removal of material by sequential etching in diluted solutions. Sample preparation protocols as well as many characterization techniques were used. In particular microscopy techniques (optical, confocal, electronic SEM and TEM), photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and mechanical strength tests allow multiscale characterization of wafers and coupons. A low bevel angle polishing lets to extend the observation zone of deep defects and to make a statistical analysis. Furthermore, methods from measuring the minority carrier lifetime are used to evaluate the recombination processes on the disturbed layer. The lifetime was obtained by photoconductivity decay (PCD) measurements on SiNx: H and Al2O3 passivated surfaces obtained from PECVD and ALD deposition processes respectively. First, characterizing samples from as-cut wafers indicates that the major defects of the SSD are cracks generated by cutting and propagated into the subsurface. These cracks are distributed over varying and heterogeneous depths depending on the sawing conditions. Second, the results of the sequential removal method show, on the one hand, an effect of the SSD in recombination processes. The evaluation accuracy of this effect is conditioned by optimized surface passivation and reliable measurements of lifetime. On the other hand, an interaction of chemical attack with cracks is shown. This is crucial in the evaluation of the absolute thickness of SSD layer that may impact the solar cells performance.

The beans protein content can be improved by breeding programs since the existence of genetic variability for this character can be explored. It is important to have the relative efficiency of the available methods evaluated. The objective of this research was to evaluate the genetic potential for protein content of segregant populations of common beans submitted to different breeding methods and evaluate the potential of the populations of the bulk method inside F2 families for the traits yield and flowering. The parental utilized in this study was from the bean group carioca , CNFC 7812 with 23% of total protein content and CNFC 8056 with 23% of total protein content. Starting with the F1 generation, was obtained the segregant population F2, witch were selected 150 plants wich families was utilized to produce the populations by three methods: Bulk, Bulk within of F2 and SSD method until the F5 generation. The average protein content of the families obtained by this cross was 16,58% for the method SSD, 20,37% for the method Bulk e 20,44% for the Bulk F2:5. Based on the results, it could be concluded that the best method for protein content was the Bulk method, on account of its easiness and its generation of a larger number of families superior than the best parental and the average of the genitors. Among the evaluated families there is enough genetic variability to be explored for the characters protein, grain yield and flowering.

Sexual size dimorphism in medieval period in Bohemia.

Kaupová, Sylva January 2011 (has links)
Differences in height among human populations or changes in height over time may be associated with different degrees of sexual dimorphism in this feature. This thesis compared the height and sexual size dimorphism (SSD) between two groups of the population of Medieval Bohemia - rural residents and inhabitants of Prague. A sample of 179 adult skeletons from five Prague sites and 175 individuals from four rural sites, dating from the 11th to 14th century, was used. Sex was determined following the principle of primary and secondary sex diagnosis, which enabled the derivation of population-specific discriminant functions using the dimensions of the humerus, femur, tibia and talus. A subsequent analysis of body height did not show statistically significant differences either in height or in SSD between the Prague and the rural part of the population of Medieval Bohemia, despite the major changes which Czech Medieval society went through in the 13th century. Comparing our results with previously published data on the height of the Czech population during the early modern period indicates a statistically significant reduction in the magnitude of sexual size dimorphism in the population of the17th century, particularly associated with a decrease in the height of men. A significantly higher stature of...

Improving Dependability of Space-Cloud Payload Processor by Storage System

Said, Hassan, Johansson, Stephanie Liza January 2023 (has links)
Due to the usage of complicated platforms and current high-performance space computing technology, onboard processing in small satellites is expanding. Space-cloud payload processors with Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components, that are required to be radiation-tolerant, are used to perform the onboard processing. In this thesis, the research will aim to increase the dependability of a generic space-cloud payload processor through its Solid State Drive (SSD) storage unit. To achieve this, a more dependable NAND-flash-based SSD Redundant Array of Independent Disc (RAID) storage system is designed and tested. The reliability of NAND-flash-based SSDs can suffer wear-outs due to increased Program/Erase (P/E) cycles, making them more prone to radiation effects. These radiation effects are considered non-destructive events in the form of bit errors (both single bit-flip and multiple bit-flips). Therefore, making the storage system more dependable involves increasing its reliability against non-destructive events and developing analytical models that account for the considered dynamic of the SSD RAID. The challenge that comes with achieving the aim of this thesis is twofold. First, to explore different RAID levels such that a combination of RAID levels can be incorporated into one SSD for better reliability than a RAID-1 setup. Hence, in this thesis, a RAID array of several SSDs is not considered. Furthermore, the combinations of RAID levels need to account for mixed-critical data. Second, to demonstrate, via simulation and analytical models, the impact on the reliability of the storage system. A comparison study is also undertaken due to the support that the Fourth Extended (Ext4) file system or Zettabyte File System (ZFS) may give to enhance the storage system, and since little research exists that compares the file systems in some feature categories. The solution is a RAID-5 + 6 storage system that is Error Detection And Correction (EDAC) protected by Hamming codes and Reed Solomon (RS) codes. Low-critical data is stored using RAID-5 whereas high-critical data is stored using RAID-6. The simulation of the storage system proves that low-critical stripes of data achieve single fault tolerance whereas high-critical stripes of data tolerate a maximum of 5-bit burst errors. In parallel, several Continuous Time Markov Chain (CTMC) models are analysed, which show that the proposed solution is indeed highly reliable. The comparison study is carried out in a systematic way, and the findings are established as substantial,i.e., ZFS provides greater storage system support. In summary, the results of creating the storage system and analysing it suggest that incorporating RAID-5 and RAID-6 offers better SSD RAID reliability than RAID-1.

The Sustainable City Year Program Public Scholarship for Community Development

Braun, Nicholas, Hutle, Thomas, Vonk, Milan Alexander January 2016 (has links)
By 2050, an estimated 6.3 billion people or 66% of the world population will live in cities. Therefore, cities are in a high impact position regarding sustainability. The question is, how do we increase awareness of the sustainability challenge among these populations and gain citywide buy-in and multi-stakeholder collaboration to address this challenge? The Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP) at the University of Oregon offers one approach to tackle this issue by matching higher education institutions (HEI’s), with local and regional cities to address their sustainability related needs through publicly engaged scholarship. The objective of this research was to examine how SCYP contributes to strategic sustainable development (SSD). Our research methods included a peer-reviewed literature review, semi-structured interviews, surveys and further document review. Our sources included SCYP co-founders, partner city program managers, strategic sustainable development experts, and municipal planners from around the world. Our research suggests that SCYP creates a subtle paradigm shift towards sustainability among partner city staff and community members while accelerating practical implementation of sustainability related projects. Furthermore, the added layer of SSD concepts can increase the efficacy of this approach and allow the model to embrace a larger systems level perspective over time.

Towards Design and Analysis For High-Performance and Reliable SSDs

Xia, Qianbin 01 January 2017 (has links)
NAND Flash-based Solid State Disks have many attractive technical merits, such as low power consumption, light weight, shock resistance, sustainability of hotter operation regimes, and extraordinarily high performance for random read access, which makes SSDs immensely popular and be widely employed in different types of environments including portable devices, personal computers, large data centers, and distributed data systems. However, current SSDs still suffer from several critical inherent limitations, such as the inability of in-place-update, asymmetric read and write performance, slow garbage collection processes, limited endurance, and degraded write performance with the adoption of MLC and TLC techniques. To alleviate these limitations, we propose optimizations from both specific outside applications layer and SSDs' internal layer. Since SSDs are good compromise between the performance and price, so SSDs are widely deployed as second layer caches sitting between DRAMs and hard disks to boost the system performance. Due to the special properties of SSDs such as the internal garbage collection processes and limited lifetime, traditional cache devices like DRAM and SRAM based optimizations might not work consistently for SSD-based cache. Therefore, for the outside applications layer, our work focus on integrating the special properties of SSDs into the optimizations of SSD caches. Moreover, our work also involves the alleviation of the increased Flash write latency and ECC complexity due to the adoption of MLC and TLC technologies by analyzing the real work workloads.

Exploration of Erasure-Coded Storage Systems for High Performance, Reliability, and Inter-operability

Subedi, Pradeep 01 January 2016 (has links)
With the unprecedented growth of data and the use of low commodity drives in local disk-based storage systems and remote cloud-based servers has increased the risk of data loss and an overall increase in the user perceived system latency. To guarantee high reliability, replication has been the most popular choice for decades, because of simplicity in data management. With the high volume of data being generated every day, the storage cost of replication is very high and is no longer a viable approach. Erasure coding is another approach of adding redundancy in storage systems, which provides high reliability at a fraction of the cost of replication. However, the choice of erasure codes being used affects the storage efficiency, reliability, and overall system performance. At the same time, the performance and interoperability are adversely affected by the slower device components and complex central management systems and operations. To address the problems encountered in various layers of the erasure coded storage system, in this dissertation, we explore the different aspects of storage and design several techniques to improve the reliability, performance, and interoperability. These techniques range from the comprehensive evaluation of erasure codes, application of erasure codes for highly reliable and high-performance SSD system, to the design of new erasure coding and caching schemes for Hadoop Distributed File System, which is one of the central management systems for distributed storage. Detailed evaluation and results are also provided in this dissertation.

Rozmnožovací strategie vybraných druhů hroznýšovitých hadů (Boidae) / Reproductive strategies in boid snakes

Vejvodová, Tereza January 2014 (has links)
The important part of life history of species is number and size of offspring, which is limited by size of maternal investment. Family of boas (Boidae) comprises species with various maternal investments. The species of study was Cuban boa (Chilabothrus angulifer) having small litter size, but producing one of the biggest neonates from family Boidae. The aim of the thesis was to analyze relationships between life-history parameters and try to find possible evolutionary causes of this huge maternal investment. Results show, that the female's decision to reproduce is under "Capital breeder" strategy, when size of the female positively influence litter size and offspring size. Surprising result is that smaller (younger) females are producing more sons than daughters in accordance with "Local resource competition" hypothesis. Fitness of the young should increase with birth size. That was confirmed only in interspecific survival rate being very high in Cuban boa. Keywords: snakes, Cuban boa, maternal investment, life history, SSD, sex ratio

Comparação dos modelos hidrológicos presentes no SSD ABC6 aplicados a uma bacia urbana / Comparison of hydrological models present in the DSS ABC6 applied to an urban watershed

Galbetti, Marcus Vinícius 08 July 2015 (has links)
In Brazil, the urbanization process was characterized by the lack of planning and adequate infrastructure, strengthening the arising of floods and flooding. In order to mitigate them, it is necessary to conduct hydrological studies that seek to understand and represent the behavior of the watershed when facing rainfall events. One of the most used tools to perform this task is the Decision Support Systems (DSS) applied in the water resources area, highlighting the Decision Support System for Flood Wave Analysis in Complex Watersheds (ABC6). The ABC6 is characterized by being a free Brazilian software and it presents many models to determine the effective precipitation and to generate synthetic hydrographs. When the hydrological data of the study area are available, such as precipitation and flow, the models parameters can be determined. Otherwise, it is necessary to estimate them through empirical formulations so that the application of these formulations is questionable in areas with different characteristics from those of their determination. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the performance of the models presented in ABC6 by using their empirical formulations in order to estimate the time of concentration and the model parameters of effective precipitation and synthetic hydrograph generation for a watershed in the process of urbanization. The results put into question the validity of the parameters values suggested in the technical literature of the SCS model, which is used for the effective precipitation determination and the ABC6 calculation routines for models of Horton and Green-Ampt. The results presented the need of updating the calculation routines presented in the ABC6 in order to make it more robust, and the need of the elaboration of a detailed technical manual of its computational routines, guiding the user in order to make the most of its potential in hydrological studies. In addition, it has been demonstrated a need for regionalized studies in order to incorporate the features and characteristics of each region to the parameters to be used.
