The Biology and Life Cycle of Two Congeneric Corisella Species (Hemiptera: Corixidae) in a North Central Texas Waste Stabilization LagoonLuyendijk, Rudd 12 1900 (has links)
Krum waste stabilization lagoon is a hypereutrophic system with relatively high thermal regimes and primary production. Corixids, particularly Corisella edulis and Corisella inscripta utilize the vast quantities of algae produced.

At-rest and compaction-induced lateral earth pressures of moist soilsIshihara, Katsuji 12 July 2007 (has links)
An instrumented oedometer was designed and constructed for the purpose of investigating at-rest and compaction-induced earth pressures in moist soils. The device has a split oedometer ring, and horizontal stresses are measured using load cells which support one half of the ring. Rapid cyclic loading was applied to compacted soil specimens, using a digital pressure regulator and a computer-based data acquisition system. The performance of the device was validated by performing tests on silicon rubber and Monterey sand. / Ph. D.

Control Design for an Inertially Stabilized RifleWhite, Alejandro Porter 08 January 2008 (has links)
An alternate method for mitigating the depredating physiological affects of a soldiers marksmanship due to combat stressors can be achieved through the design and implementation of a active stabilization system for small arms weapons. The INSTAR system is an innovative active stabilization system designed to decouple the shooter's disturbance effects from the barrel movement. The INSTAR system uses an piezoelectric actuator separating the barrel of the rifle from its stock to stabilize barrel movement. This paper uses various control techniques to develop control algorithms for simulation. The level of performance for each control algorithm is based on how well each they measure up to the criteria developed from the INSTAR system. This paper furthers research on INSTAR by developing and comparing four control designs that may be implemented within the INSTAR system. / Master of Science

Preliminary Study of Artificial Intervertebral DiscYeh, Ming-Chiang Jerry 08 1900 (has links)

This study is one of the projects of the artificial joints group conducted by Professor W. R. Newcombe, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Dr. G. R. Viviani, Department of Surgery.

A summary of the literature survey of the lower back which is pertinent to the design of a replacement for the lumbar spine is reported. Motions, force system, and
strengths of the lumbar intervertebral joint are obtained from the literatures and calculation.

Advantages of silicone elastomer and titanium as the biomaterials for the artificial disc are presented. An experiment to test the bond between titanium and silicone reveals that the strength provided by only applying primer is insufficient.

Surface structure for prosthetic stabilization and initial fixation is discussed. Proposed design alternatives for artificial discs are presented with the attempts to reduce the number of moulds needed by introducing a prosthesis with a more regular shape.

An important part of this thesis is to indicate the direction in which further work in this area should proceed.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)
