Drivers and barriers in digital scholarly communicationDallmeier-Tiessen, Sünje 11 March 2014 (has links)
Two major Open Science innovations, Open Access and research data sharing, have been studied in detail in this thesis. A large-scale survey and personal interviews are used to gain detailed insights from a range of disciplines. In addition, a case study in the High Energy Physics (HEP) community was used to study the results in practice. The results show that a rather positive attitude towards both, Open Access and research data sharing is not reflected in the researchers’ practices. Disciplinary differences prevail and relate to the different publishing cultures and research workflows. The results indicate that quality and prestige of research output are perceived as very important in determining a researcher’s reputation. Researchers prefer community-approved publication outlets. They hesitate to explore new innovations, such as data sharing, for which only few established workflows exist in digital scholarly communication. Interviewees highlight the significance of a (missing) link between such approaches on the one hand and the current incentive system and the research assessment schemes on the other. The results indicate that barriers can be overcome. In the case study, a strong collaboration with the community facilitated enhanced feedback loops to develop tailored and targeted services for Open Science. Researchers in the case study were successfully engaged in new innovative workflows: a crowdsourcing tool and data sharing in a digital library. The results highlight that opportunities of Open Science are not yet explored widely. But with targeted support, it is possible to build on best practices and develop strategies that engage communities in new innovations. The results furthermore demand new strategies to establish links from Open Science services to the academic incentive system. It is needed to revisit the current research assessment scheme in regard to potential support mechanisms for Open Science.

An analysis of open access scholarly communication Tanzanian public universitiesDulle, Frankwell Wilson 08 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate factors affecting the adoption of open access
in research activities within Tanzanian public universities in order to device
mechanisms of enhancing the use of this mode of scholarly communication. The study
adopted the UTAUT model to formulate an open access research model comprising of
six constructs and five moderators for guidance of this investigation. A triangulation
approach for data gathering was adopted. In the first instance, a semi-structured
questionnaire was used to collect data from 398 respondents selected using the
stratified random sampling from a population of 1088 university researchers from six
public universities in Tanzania. The interview involving 63 policy makers and
structured records review were also conducted to complement the questionnaire
survey. The descriptive and binary logistic regression statistics of the Statistical
Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) were used for data analysis.
The study established that majority of the policy makers (90.5%) and researchers
(72.1%) were aware of open access. Attitude, awareness, effort expectancy, and
performance expectancy were established as the key determinants for researchers’
behavioural intention of open access usage while age, awareness, behavioural
intention, facilitating conditions and social influence were found to significantly affect
researchers’ actual usage of open access. It was concluded that researchers’ and
policy makers’ general perceptions about open access were very positive signifying
the acceptance of this mode of scholarly communication in the study area. Current
poor research conditions and researchers’ low Internet self-efficacy such as
inadequate information search and online publishing skills were cited as the main
hindrances for researchers to use open access in scholarly communication. The study
recommends institutionalisation of open access publishing in Tanzanian public
universities and other similar research institutions so as to improve the dissemination
of research output emanating from such institutions. Six areas for further research to
establish more insights regarding the feasibility for open access development in the
country are also recommended. / Information Science / D. Litt. et Phil. (Information Science)

Scholarly communication as a situated learning process for PhD students : an exploratory study about publishing as a community of practice / Vetenskaplig kommunikation som situerat lärande för doktorander : en utforskande studie om publicering som en lärandegemenskapWennström, Sofie January 2017 (has links)
This master’s thesis aims to explore the practice of becoming a researcher and the learning process embedded in this activity by looking at the communicative practices of PhD students, within the context of academic publishing. It is likely that the way in which these soon-to-be researchers reason about the task of communication is related to their way of approaching their field of research as well as the lived world, which makes it relevant to explore further. The study was performed based two sets of data, first open-ended semi-structured interviews with eleven PhD students at Stockholm University, where they talk about their current situation, their motivations and goals and about how they plan to publish their dissertation. Secondly, an analysis of data about publications focusing on work by PhD students at Stockholm University between 2013–2016, and information about how the intended audience, i.e. the readers, have interacted with the published material. These two sets of data were analysed with the use of theories about personal epistemology, sociocultural learning and the rationality of actions. The study shows that the majority of the PhD students at Stockholm University publishes their research findings as scholarly articles in English. The conclusion is also that the publishing process can be understood as a pedagogical tool, as it provides a vehicle for the PhD students to immerse themselves in their community of practice. These findings suggest that it could be useful to further emphasise the publishing activity as a learning process that may lead to a deeper understanding of the role of the researcher in society.

Kiš, Kish or Kiški? : A Bibliometrics study of the domain Assyriology / Kiš, Kish eller Kiški? : En bibliometrisk studie av domänen assyriologiLarsson, Olivia January 2021 (has links)
This thesis aims to examine how the domain Assyriology can be analyzed with bibliometrics. It uses the domain analytic perspective by Birger Hjørland and Hanne Albrechtsen. The metadata was collected through the Web of Science and the dataset covers the years 2016-2020 from the journals Akkadica, Journal of Near Eastern Studies, Ancient Near Eastern studies, Journal of Ancient Near Eastern Religions and Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und Vorderasiatische Archäologie. The domain was studied by analyzing citations, the documents, languages, place of publication, the age of references and the authors by visualizing patterns in figures and tables. Co-authorship analysis was used to display collaboration between countries. The content was analyzed with co-citation analysis of references and co-word analysis of title words to visualize the knowledge structures within the domain. The study found that Co-word analysis did give a general idea of different knowledge patterns but there were few clear structures. The co-citation analysis was found to reveal more clear structures though the references had a low citation rate and so might not be representative of the whole domain. It was found to be effective to use tables and figures to visualize certain aspects and patterns within the domain. In conclusion, bibliometrics was found to be effective to gain knowledge about the domain Assyriology. This is a two years master's thesis in Library and Information Science. Metadatan har samlats in från Web of Science och datasetet består material från tidsperioden 2016-2020 från tidskrifterna AkkAncient Near Eastern studies, adica, Journal of Near Eastern Studies, Journal of Ancient Near Eastern Religions and Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und Vorderasiatische Archäologie.

Developing and managing information collections for academics and researchers at a university of technology : a case studyVan Zijl, Carol Wendy 30 November 2005 (has links)
This study examines the efficacy of collection development and management practices, policies, guidelines and standards in universities of technology to meet the information needs of academics and researchers at such institutions. In South Africa, as in Australasia, technikons or polytechnics have been upgraded first into degree granting institutions and then, at the beginning of the 21st century, into universities of technology. The researcher was concerned that library collections in South African universities of technology have not grown to meet the research and teaching needs of academics at the level of universities offering instruction up to a doctoral level. As research funding, government grants and the general prestige of the institutions depend on the research output of the institutions, it is essential that academics and researchers find the information resources they require in their institutional libraries. Case studies of universities of technology in New Zealand and South Africa reveal that, while Auckland University of Technology has been successful in extending its collection to meet the increasing demands placed on it, the collection development policies, standards and guidelines in a South African university of technology need to be upgraded in order to meet the information needs and information behaviour of their researchers and academics. Current levels of funding for the acquisition of information resources in South Africa lag behind those found at the New Zealand university of technology. The university of technology that was the object of the South African case study needs to bring its collection in line with that of similar institutions worldwide. This entails adapting goals and objectives stating how the collection is to develop, evaluating the collection and the needs of users, changing the Collection Development Policy to reflect the direction collection development will take and ensuring that the institution and the government back this project financially. To this end, a model Collection Development Policy has been drawn up that can be adapted to the local requirements of South African universities of technology to assist with the process of developing and managing library collections that will be worthy of such an institution. / Information Science / D. ICTS: A catalyst for enriching the learning process and library services in IndiaChandra, Smita, Patkar, Vivek January 2007 (has links)
The advances in ICTs have decisively changed the library and learning environment. On the one hand, ICTs have enhanced the variety and accessibility to library collections and services to break the barriers of location and time. On the other, the e-Learning has emerged as an additional medium for imparting education in many disciplines to overcome the constraint of physical capacity associated with the traditional classroom methods. For a vast developing country like India, this provides an immense opportunity to provide even higher education to remote places besides extending the library services through networking. Thanks to the recent initiatives by the public and private institutions in this direction, a few web-based instruction courses are now running in the country. This paper reviews different aspects of e-Learning and emerging learning landscapes. It further presents the
library scene and new opportunities for its participation in the e-Learning process. How these ICTs driven advances can contribute to the comprehensive learning process in India is highlighted.
