Science Foresight Project

The aim of the Science Foresight Project was to design and assess a simple, objective and cost-effective technique to gather information about emerging short and long-term research developments, primarily in the physical and engineering sciences. International experts were objectively chosen using co-citation patterns in scientific and technical literature, and were invited to submit their predictions about emerging developments in their research fields. They were questioned about how the effects of various factors and driving forces might affect their predictions. The cost and time required to administer the questionnaire and collect the responses was minimised through the use of Internet and Web based technologies. A simple process was used to report the predictions; short excerpts from each prediction were used as the summary and each prediction was classified into one of ten categories of emerging developments. Authors from 114 papers (23.7%) responded, identifying a total of 190 short-term and 111 long-term predicted emerging developments. Expert responses were received from an international group of senior researchers between the ages of 36 and 55, mostly engaged in basic research in academic institutions. Some experts described specific emerging developments, some discussed broad emerging trends in their field and others described both. Emerging development categories such as Atomic & Stellar Matter, Biology & Biosphere, Biomedical & Clinical, Computers & Robotics and Genomics & Proteomics were closely aligned with conventional science areas while other categories such as Mathematical & Computational and Nano Science & Technology contained predictions from almost every area of science. The technique developed and applied here appears to constitute an efficient means of surveying the international research community in order to gain insights into common patterns that evolve from their collective research activities. Dynamically monitoring emerging research developments on a continuous basis could provide valuable information to policy makers, planners and researchers.

Good intentions: Expectations of benefit from technoscience innovation: genetic modification and wind energy in New Zealand

New developments in science and technology are promoted through projections of anticipated benefit that justify research, help secure funding and institutional, political and public support, and encourage technology diffusion. This thesis explores the strategic influence of constructs of expected benefit through analysis of the claims advanced for two technology fields in New Zealand: genetic modification and wind energy. The ways benefits are framed, and the kinds of returns and outcomes that are promoted, have major implications for technoscience. Some technology pathways and applications are supported and fostered, while others are rejected or marginalised. The “downstream” impacts and potential risks of scientific innovation have received extensive academic and policy analysis, while the benefits claimed for R&D and new technologies have largely been taken for granted. However, science and technology futures have recently been addressed in an emerging field of international scholarship – the sociology of expectations. This thesis follows technoscience trajectories back “upstream”, to better understand the work of benefit framings in legitimating and valorising innovation in two sectors in New Zealand. Understanding the dynamics of such optimistic projections is crucial for publics, interested groups, practitioners and policy-makers engaging with the challenges of contemporary technoscience.

The MSM Deferral Controversy: An Analysis of the 2000 BPAC Meeting

I will analyze the transcript from the 2000 BPAC meeting on the reevaluation of the MSM deferral policy and will elucidate the role that scientific data, specifically the data associated with NAT, plays in the 2000 deliberations surrounding the MSM deferral. This examination reveals that while scientific data did play a significant role in the decision making process of the BPAC there were also a number of other factors that influenced their deliberations as well. Ultimately what I will argue is that there were two different platforms present in the meeting and that each platform performs and enacts the body and blood of the donor differently. One platform is all about the inclusionary principles of blood donation and is most concerned by the potential for discrimination toward the body of the donor. The other platform is all about risk regulation and economics and is most concerned about how the body and blood of the donor will affect the safety and integrity of the blood supply. These platforms are not perspectival or dependent on view; this is not an epistemological argument but rather, an ontological one that concerns the reality and materiality of the situation, not the perspective. Thinking about these two platforms gives a handle to the nature of this controversy and contextualizes the committee’s decision to continue with the MSM deferral.

Investigation Of The Preservice Science Teachers

The aim of this study is to investigate the views of preservice science teachers on science-technology-society, STS, issue. A total of 176 preservice science teachers participated in the study. A 26-item &ldquo / Views on Science-Technology-Society (VOSTS)&rdquo / instrument, translated and adapted into Turkish, were utilized to assess participants&rsquo / views on STS. The VOSTS (Aikenhead, Ryan and Fleming, 1989) is a pool of 114 empirically developed multiple-choice items with nine categories. In order to understand participants&rsquo / views on STS in depth, semi-structured interviews were also conducted by 9 volunteer preservice science teachers. The results gave a colorful picture of the views of preservice science teachers on science-technology-society issue. The analysis revealed that preservice science teachers often confuse the definitions of technology with science. Most of the participants of the study had specific views about the reasons of doing scientific researches in their country, for example, to be independent from other countries, to get financial profit. Results displayed a consensus on the possible positive effects of upbringing and the importance of education given to high school students. According to the data obtained from the present study, respondents possess varied views about the influences of society on science and technology. While preservice science teachers claiming that scientists could break the rules of science, they also claimed scientists as objective in their study. On the other hand, participants supported the view that scientists&rsquo / concern on all the effects of their experiments. Preservice science teachers advocated also that technological developments can be controlled by citizens.

Evaluation of Escherichia coli probiotic candidates for combating EHEC in the food chain using competition analysis in bovine feces

Enterohemorrhagic E. coli, EHEC, is a verotoxin producing, zoonotic pathogen, which causes diseases in humans such as bloody or watery diarrhea. Microorganisms compete for limited living space, nutrients and other resources and therefore other microorganisms are EHECs biggest competitors. To avoid outbreaks and infections with EHEC, one possible approach is to use harmless but competitive bacteria as probiotics. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate three probiotic E. coli strains and their ability to outcompete EHEC in bovine feces.     Ten different cattle fecal samples from three different farms were used to mix with the three probiotic and EHEC strains. The mixture was diluted and cultivated at 0 h as a control and then incubated for 48 h at 20°C and 37°C before dilution and cultivation on CT-SMaC. Colonies was counted and ratios between EHEC and probiotic E. coli before and after incubation were calculated. Kruskal-Wallis test with Dunn’s test as post hoc test were used to see if observed reductions of EHEC were significant or not.     In 37°C, strain 10 was the only strain producing a significant reduction of EHEC. In contrast, no significant reduction was observed at 20°C in any of the strains.     Future research studying other factors and performed on live cattle models are necessary to confirm the usefulness of the studied probiotic candidates. However, these results indicate probiotics can be a useful tool to avoid infections and big outbreaks of EHEC in the future.

Development of a dynamic ex vivo culture system for human islets of langerhans

Type 1 diabetes(T1D)is a disease that only gets more common. The etiology of the disease is not known but there are many existing theories about what the cause is. These different theories have been tested in vivoin rodents or invitro. The resultsfrom experiments done in those waysarenotall realistic because rodents differnotablyfrom humans,and when studies areperformed in vitrowith human isletsof Langerhans different hormones will accumulate. The aim of this studywas to establisha dynamic ex vivosystem in which stimulation of human islets of Langerhans can be performed in a more lifelike environment. To study islets in this system couldin the future lead to increased knowledge in the etiology of T1D.The perifusion system PERI-4.2 from Biorep Technologies together with an incubator with 37°Cand5% CO2were used to arrangethe ex vivosystem. An Insulin ELISA from Mercodia was performedto analyze the insulin secretion from the islets. Fourdifferent set ups for the system were tested and the last one showed the best results.In conclusion this study has shown that it is possible to preserve human islets of Langerhans in a dynamic ex vivosystem with a constant medium exchange if it is done under conditionswhere the islets are protected from shear forces from the supplying medium,together with a medium exchange rate which replaces the whole medium in at least one hour.
