The poetry of bucolic genre began in Greece with the Idylls of Theocritus. In Rome, Virgil, the poet of the Classical Period in the Latin Literature, was the first one to describe the rustic-pastoral scenes in his works. Thus, approximately between 42 and 39 BC, Virgil wrote a set of ten poems which is known by the tradition of Classical Studies as Bucólicas. We came into contact with these texts through uninterrupted copies, whose most ancient manuscripts were made of papyrus in the diffusion of the Classical Culture. Besides, it is known that the bucolic poetry exerted influence on many other poets, and it was evoked later on in the Renascence and mainly during the Neoclassicism, which allows us to conclude that the vitality of bucolic poetry is clear since the main themes provided inspiration and still do for poets and other artists. This paper aims to investigate, in five bucolic poems of Virgil, the particular arrangement of poetic language, taking into consideration the expressive construction of the texts and its figurativity. It is intended, therefore, through Literary Semiotics, to gain insight into what we may call vocational imagery of a literary text. Concerning the poems of Virgil, we will analyze the most expressive themes of the even poems, which are considered by the critics and scholars as monodies. Moreover, this paper will also present translations of the studies of the poems accompanied by the necessary cultural references. This dissertation is also an introductory study on bucolic themes, Virgil‟s pastoral and semiotic concept of figurativity, which is based on “seem- to-be” of expression, aiming at the construction of an effect of meaning “reality” in restoring and categorizing the perception of the world

Semiotic change in modern and postmodern Time advertisements

Ferreira, Sidnéa Nunes 26 October 2012 (has links)
This investigation addresses semiotic change in the context of the modern/postmodern transition from the perspective of Systemic Functional Semiotics and Social Theory. By comparing one page print ads from two TIME magazine issues (US edition), one dated January 1929 and the other one January 2009, its three-fold objective is: 1) to identify and describe possible semiotic changes in terms of composition, framing and functional meanings; 2) to interpret these changes according to some of the main themes in the modern/postmodern debate; and 3) to reflect on possible theoretical contributions. At the more descriptive level, results seem to indicate a disposition to fine-grained semiotic changes. Most of the 1929 characteristics are still present in the 2009 data group, with only five slight changes: 1) two top-bottom compositions with image in top leading position instead of one; 2) some degree of connection; 3) more conceptual representations; 4) a stronger presence of the imperative mood; and 5) more images organized in centre-margin compositions. These slight changes, at the more interpretative level, have been read as the duplication of the modern pattern, the distinct ways time and space are experienced in modernity and postmodernity, and the end of the modernizing process and/or the emergence of a new kind of space. Also, in their totality, these changes have been read as a process of modern radicalisation. Lastly, at a more reflective level, this work has shown the possibility of three revisions to Halliday's categorization of process types within the transitity system from the perspective of Wilber's quadrants: 1) that the grammar sets up a clear discontinuity not only between outer and inner experience by also between individual and collective experience; 2) that verbal processes are not subsidiary but prototypical of the collective dimension of interior meanings, the world of interconsciousness; and 3) that behavioural and existential processes are borderline processes, not in relation to three main process types, but in relation to the interior/exterior dimensions and the individual/collective dimensions, respectively.

Mori, Fabiana Miano. January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: This paper entitled The construction of the image in João Guimarães Rosa's O Espelho in Primeiras Estórias and in Pablo Picasso's Las Meninas was developed with the purpose of semiotically analyzing the works O Espelho, a short story present in João Guimarães Rosa's Primeiras Estórias and Pablo Picasso's painting Las Meninas, whose starting point was the baroque artist Diego Velázquez's painting that has the same name, and from this analysis, theoretically based, to point out a possible intersection between both texts, since they clearly belong to the field of interdiscursiveness. It was verified that the plastic language used by Pablo Picasso, a twentieth century painter, distances itself from the sixteenth century baroque plastic elements, and there is in both texts a clear opposition to the classical principles. The author-painter, present in the cubist and baroque paintings, symbolizes Art itself which, in spite of the elapse of physical time, is atemporal. In relation to the short story, the incessant game of words, internal rhymes and other elements punctuates Guimarães Rosa's phrasal baroqueness and, besides demarcating the central point of the collection Primeiras Estórias, questions the form and existence of the image in the diverse ways it can be understood. Since the "mirror-time-image" is the main point of intersection between the verbal text and the visual text in this analysis, it is what initiates the undressing of the forms in Guimarães Rosa's short story and the anamorphoses in Picasso's painting, which is the Other in relation to Velasquez's work - a point that is proposed and worked throughout this study. The element "mirror-time-image", which proposes the discussion regarding different relations, among them the enunciate Art and the presupposed enunciation (enunciator and reader/spectator), generates a path of double sense which, in its turn, mobilizes this dissertation. / Mestre
