'Being in the wrong place at the wrong time' : ethnographic insights into experiences of incarceration and release from a Mexican prisonCorral Paredes, Carolina January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the moral life worlds of people who have been imprisoned in Mexico, while considering how they incorporate the fate of imprisonment into the story of their lives through cognitive, discursive, sensory, affective, recollective and imaginary processes. The midst of a war on drugs in Mexico confirms that structural factors like political premises and poverty, as well as class backgrounds and racial discrimination largely determine who goes to prison. However, this research is not only confined to a structural analysis, since prisoners also explain their imprisonment in relation to other contingent encounters and coincidences occurring in their every day life. As such, imprisonment seems for prisoners like an unimagined possibility and a latent daily risk. Using a variety of ethnographic methods and modes of representation, this research sheds light on how imprisonment is related to stories of love, treason, memories and hopes. I draw from prisoners and ex-prisoners’ personal sources of expression like their writings; I recur to eliciting their memories through their objects and crafts; I pay attention to the role of the gaze in crafting identities in prison; I also draw attention to prisoners and ex-prisoners’ expressions of feelings and emotions. I argue that such sources and sensorial realms and methods offer relevant insights into their existential experiences. They are also important devices to represent stories from below. Through inmates’ narratives and practices my work offers stories, explanations and effects of incarceration alternative to the official reasons legitimating incarceration. Central to my work is my film Time will Tell that documents the lives of three ex-prisoners and represents their every day duties, and the sensory and corporeal implications of the aftermath of imprisonment. Film has been a central piece of my ethnographic research since it allows audiences to engage with realms of experience that go beyond the one offered by language and text; so as to also help evoke – and not only illustrate- the whole of the journey out of prison as an ontological and sensuous experience.

Roles of Calcium Ions and Cyclic AMP in Olfactory TransductionWinegar, Bruce D. (Bruce David) 12 1900 (has links)
The roles of Ca2 + and cAMP in olfactory transduction were explored using agents which affect calcium channels and second messenger systems. These agents were applied at certain calculated final concentrations onto olfactory epithelia of urethane-anesthetized frogs (Sana PiPlens) by two-sec aerosol spray. During extracellular recording, saturated vapors of isoamyl acetate were delivered every 100 sec in 0.3 sec pulses to produce an electroolfactogram (EOG). Inorganic cations that block inward calcium currents inhibit EOG responses with the following rank order: (La3+) > (Zn2+, Cd2+) > (Al3+, Ca2+, Sr2+) > (Co2+). Application of 7.5 mM La3+ eradicates £0G's, while Ba2+ (which can carry more current that Ca2+) initially produces significant enhancement (F=43.04, p<0.001, df=19). Magnesium ion has no effect on EOG's at 7.5 mM, while 1.5 X 10"4M Ca2+ is significantly inhibitory (F=5.74; p=0.0355; df=12). Control aerosol sprays of distilled water depress EOG's by an average of 5%. The organic calcium channel antagonists diltiazem and verapamil inhibit EOG's by 17% and 36X, respectively, at a concentration of 1.5 X 10~*M. Verapamil produces significant inhibition (F=17.17; p=0.002; df=ll) at 1.5 X 10" 5 M, while the 1,4-dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonists, nicardipine and nifedipine, do not inhibit beyond 1% DMSO controls. Several calmodulin antagonists decrease EOG's, but without correlation to their anti-calmodulin potency. Application of 1.5 X 10"*M chlorpromazine and N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-l-naphthalenesulfonamide inhibit EOG's by 31% and 27%, respectively, while trifluoperazine inhibits by 23%. Dibutyryl cAMP, a lipophilic mimic of cAMP, produces 54% inhibition at 1.5 X 10" *M. Dibutyryl cGMP, cGMP, cAMP, and adenosine all decrease EOG's by less than 15% compared to distilled water controls. Forskolin, a reversible activator of adenylate cyclase, inhibits EOG's by 57% at 1.5 X 10"5M, which is significant beyond the 1% DMSO controls (F=17.17; p=0.002; df=ll). These data support the hypothesis that Ca2+ participates in olfactory transduction. Calcium ions could serve as charge carriers, second messengers, or both. Cyclic AMP could be involved with the primary excitatory process or sensory adaptation, or both.

“Fake It!”: An Exploration of Cinematography, Societal Expectations, and Artist CollaborationPerry, Sullivan 01 December 2021 (has links)
An exploration of cinematography, societal expectations, and artist collaboration, “Fake It!” challenges the traditional definition of art. Part one follows the journey of creating a music video for an original song titled “Fake It!” by the band Model City. Location, lighting, camera, and editing choices are explained and connected to the song's themes of teenage angst, regret, and a rejection of societal norms. Part two explores the process of creating art by translating the hexadecimal color values from the music video into a new musical composition. This is accomplished through a mathematical process that converts the computer-identified RGB letters and numbers into notes on the musical scale.

Vilka omvårdnadsåtgärder kan vidtas för att främja näringsintaget hos äldre?Linde, Caroline, Weideberg, Marie January 2021 (has links)
Background: The nutrition intake can be greater for an elderly person, even if they are less physically active. A low nutrition intake can increase the risk of malnourishment, pressure ulcers and the risk of falling. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe which nursing measures healthcare staff in nursing homes can take to promote the nutritional intake of the elderly. Method: Descriptive literature study that included 12 articles, six articles with qualitative approach, four articles with quantitative approach and two mixed approaches were included. Article search was performed in the database Pubmed and Cinahl. Results: The results showed that with the use of different aid it's possible to promote nutrient intake and increase appetite. Among other things, with the help of pleasant and home-like environments in the dining room with nicely set tables or familiar background music. Conclusion: Understanding the need of nutrition is vital to prevent sickness and increase the overall quality of life. This literature study can help healthcare staff get a wider understanding of the connection between mental and physical health and the nutrition intake.

A multi-sensory curriculum for young children : [a paper] ...Stark, Mary Barbara 01 January 1976 (has links)
Since many educators and philosophers, including Montessori and Piaget, advocate training of the sense as a prerequisite to formal learning, and since two ERIC searches failed to turn up such research it was decided to test out it the use of a multi-sensory curriculum does influence the achievement level of young children.

Revelations to Others in Medieval Hagiographical and Visionary TextsJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation concerns “revelations to others” in medieval hagiographical and visionary texts. Revelations to others take many forms—spiritual visions, dreams, visual and tactile witnessing of miracles, auditions—but they all are experienced by someone other than, or in addition to, the holy person who is the subject of the text. This type of revelatory experience is common and, I argue, highly significant. Most straightforwardly, revelations to others serve to further authenticate holy women or men, confirming their devotion to God, their miraculous abilities, and/or their favored position with Christ. But revelations to others do much more than authorize the visionary. They voice the possibility that one could learn to have visions, which has interesting connections to modern ideas of guided seeing, such as meditation. They suggest circumstances in which holy persons served as devotional objects, helping their viewers achieve a higher level of religious experience in a similar manner to stained glass windows, crucifixes, or images of Veronica’s veil. For women, revelations to others sometimes offer access to spaces in which they could not physically step foot, such as the altar or the bedrooms of abbots. Moreover, by showcasing the variety of persons participating in divine experiences (monks and nuns, lay persons, nobility, and sometimes other holy persons), revelations to others speak to the larger visionary communities in which these holy persons lived. Through a series of close readings, this dissertation creates a taxonomy of revelations to others and argues for their necessity in understanding the collaborative nature of medieval spirituality. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation English 2019

Sinnenas arkitektur : I vilken utsträckning planeras och utformas dagens svenska arkitektur med de mänskliga sinnena i beaktning? / Sensory Architecture : To what extent is Swedish architecture of today planned and designed in consideration to the human senses?Rehn, Linda January 2021 (has links)
This thesis investigates to what extent Swedish architecture of today is planned and designed in consideration to the human senses. A few decades ago the human senses had the light directed to itself in the world of architecture. But what about in the 2020’s, is the light still on or has sensory architecture fallen into oblivion? The objective of the thesis has been to map out whether the visual sense is currently dominating, together with closely related aspects such as whether architectural specialization or the architect’s sex affects how the senses are seen upon, how present the human senses are in today’s Swedish academic architectural programs and what effect this could have on the architecture of tomorrow. The research method encompasses two structured, quantitative surveys; one aimed at professional architects and one aimed at architectural students/teachers. 114 professional architects responded and 48 students. The surveys concluded that the visual sense is in fact considered the most important by the respondents and therefore hold a leading position. The human senses are overall considered very important for the user experience, despite this they are not often discussed within the professional field, displaying a lack of debate. Further analyzes establish that professional architects sometimes meet resistance and a lack of understanding among other occupations they collaborate with. The abstract nature of the human senses and the difficulties measuring them mean they can easily be downgraded to “optional aesthetics” by other occupational groups. Teachers at the academic architectural programs also has an important standing in weighing up, through their teaching, for the limited presence of aspects of the human senses in the current required reading at the universities.
