Displacement and Emotional Well-Being among Married and Unmarried Syrian Adolescent Girls in Lebanon: An Analysis of NarrativesRoupetz, Sophie, Bartels, Susan A., Michael, Saja, Najjarnejad, Negin, Anderson, Kimberley, Davison, Colleen 19 April 2023 (has links)
Lebanon hosts over one million refugees displaced from Syria as a result of the armed conflict—of whom, approximately 15% are adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years of age. Many female adolescent migrants report a decrease in quality of life and an increase in family tensions. This study sought to investigate the emotional well-being of adolescent Syrian girls in Lebanon. We hypothesized that married girls may experience additional hardships and thus greater feelings of dissatisfaction in daily life, given their young marriage and responsibilities at home. This study was part of a large mixed-methods study on the experiences of Syrian refugee girls in Lebanon (n = 1422). Using line-by-line coding and thematic analysis, 188 first-person narratives from Syrian girls were analysed. Our results highlight poor emotional well-being among married and unmarried girls, with sadness, fear and anger commonly mentioned. Some participants expressed feelings of hope, happiness, gratefulness and empowerment. Unmarried girls (n = 111) were more likely to associate their shared stories with negative feelings such as sadness (47% vs. 22%), disappointment (30% vs. 19%), and frustration (32% vs. 22%) than were married girls (n = 77). Four themes emerged as important determinants: access to education, perceived safety, peer support, and longing for life back in Syria. Continued efforts to improve emotional well-being for married and unmarried refugee girls are needed in Lebanon, in particular those that address the nuances for these groups.

Glimmers in the Dark : Enhancing Museum Experiences Through Interaction Design at the Natural History Museum of DenmarkZimmermann Maya Simoes, Aline January 2023 (has links)
In a digital and fast-paced world, museums are constantly updating their practices to support visitors’ experiences and interactive exhibits are increasingly gaining popularity. I collaborated with the Natural History Museum of Denmark to design an interactive room for their upcoming new building, specifically for the exhibit with the working title “Night in the Open Land”. The project adopted a design methodology that focused on playfulness and senses and included experience prototyping with museum visitors. The final prototype was designed to replicate a slow and contemplative experience of being outside at night. A playful interactive flashlight was used to find hidden animals and interact with the exhibition, enhancing exploration. The torchlight and the sounds and movements of visitors served as input for an interactive system, which produced sounds, video and smell as outputs. The flashlight enhanced the playful and explorative aspect of the room and allowed for shared and focused attention by all family members. Furthermore, olfactory stimuli were highly appreciated by visitors. At the intersection between museum studies and Interaction Design, this project is relevant to Interaction-as-Experience and reinforces how multisensory interactive exhibits are effective in catering to diverse audiences. The results of this project suggest that incorporating interaction design into public spaces like museums can enhance visitors’ experiences, fostering engagement, learning, and enjoyment.

Mellan omsorg och kontroll : En litteraturstudie om våld mot personer med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning på stöd- och omsorgsboende / Between care and control : A literature review on violence against people with intellectual disabilities in residential care settingsPalmqvist, Måns January 2024 (has links)
Violence against people with intellectual disabilities is a significant social problem. Extensive previous research shows that this group is over-represented as victims of violence and abuse both within and outside the domain of disability services. Despite this, research on the phenomenology of violence is lacking. This scoping review aims to examine the nature of violence in residential care settings for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This review shows that these settings for are an environment where violence of both an interpersonal and institutional nature thrives. Residents' vulnerability is reinforced by factors such as their level of functionality and gender. The negative effects of violence are also amplified by the fact that it is frequently the care organisation or individual representatives of the organisation who carry out acts of violence. By highlighting risk and protection factors linked to violence and power in disability care and residential care settings, the picture emerges of an organisational culture as a central factor in violence and abuse linked to the environment in residential care settings. Legislation and guidelines in disability care have developed considerably in recent decades, but still an educationist ideal with institutional roots lives on both inside and outside disability care.

Impact Evaluation in Post-conflict Environments : A Critical Appraisal of Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT)Walid, Rania January 2021 (has links)
Impact evaluations in development interventions has been growing in recent years. The increasing demand for evidence-based outcomes has led to a debate of what methodology is best to evaluate the impact of development interventions. Accordingly, Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) has been labeled as a gold standard for impact evaluations. The RCT method functions in a unique way, as it removes the selection bias and ensure high validity of a study. The aim of this research study is to critically assess the RCT as an alternative approach for impact assessment in relation to post-conflict countries; whether this claim holds in a conflict-affected environment or that the context-specific factors of post-conflict countries challenge the implementation of an RCT. This study implements mixed method approach by using simple descriptive statistics and semi-structured interview to answer the research questions. The findings of this study indicate that context-specific factors of post-conflict environments pose challenges on the implementation of an RCT. As a result, these challenges threaten the quality of the RCT method which lies in reliability, internal validity and external validity. The findings also indicate that feasibility of RCT which lies in ethics, logistics and security, cannot be addressed individually, as the feasibility has a direct impact on the quality of the RCT method.

Digital Co-Design : Designing for Remote Co-design in Digital SettingsSiebeneicher, Hannes January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to through a series of co-design explorations develop guidelines for how analogue co-design methods and tools can be digitalized and used for the initial phase of a co-design process in remote settings. To nurture the discussion around how co-design practices can be digitalized several aspects are investigated and focused upon, presenting an overview of relevant factors for future researchers to delve deeper into. Found challenges revolve around the lack of a shared physical environment, the implementation of physical materials and sketching, and the building of trust and relationships in remote settings. The final product of this thesis is a set of guidelines that have been established through a series of co-design explorations drawing on perspectives found in both academia and the current industry.
