Flow induce vibration of a circular cylinder with different mass ratio in shear flow

Wu, Yi-Hsin 09 February 2010 (has links)
This thesis is an experimental study of shear effect of a two-degree-of-freedom cylinder in fluid flow in terms of different mass ratio. This study is done using an elastic cylinder of high natural frequency, and the free stream velocity is 0.2m/s to 1.5m/s. The results show that as mass ratio increases, the motion of cylinder becomes more stable and small, and the frequency response of cylinder self-excited is bigger than vortex-shedding response when spring constant is bigger enough. Thus it is not easy to observe the vortex-shedding frequency variation with respect to various velocities by dint of cylinder vibration. When it come to the shear effect, the effect of shear flow could decreases the drag force, and increases the lift force. Orbits of cylinder vibration is not symmetric; the displacement is more significant on low velocity side.

Flow induce vibration of a circular cylinder with different sheer parameters in sheer flow

Chuang, Chun-Cheng 06 September 2010 (has links)
Elastic cylinder vibration due to different shear parameter in the water flow is investigated experimentally in this research. The water flow ranges from 0.4 m/s to 1.06 m/s. It is found from the experiment that shear parameter has a significant influence on the amplitude of the cylinder vibration. The greater the shear parameter becomes, the later the delaying phenomenon also becomes. The delaying phenomenon will bring about resonant procrastination. Additionally, the greater shear parameter lessens the cylinder¡¦s drag force, but the lift force will be augmented, and the vibration orbit will be asymmetric. At lower flow velocity, cylinder¡¦s displacement is greater. With the enhancement of the shear parameter or the reduced velocity, the flow type and the vortex street behind the cylinder will turn more and more impalpable, and eventually become chaotic.

Numerical simulation for flow induced vibration of three circular cylinders with various arrangement

Lin, Yu-Hsuan 02 August 2011 (has links)
The present study aims to explore dynamical behavior of the fluid- elastic vibration of a single cylinder and three cylinders in shear flow by numerical simulations. This paper investigates the effects of the shear parameter, mass ratio, and spacing(P/D) on fluid-elastic vibration of the cylinders. Continuity equation and momentum equations are solved alternatively using a CFD package, Fluent 6.3.26. Dynamic meshing techniques together with the cylinder motion equations are employed in the simulation. Under different flow conditions, flow types, and cylinder motion models, lock-in and fluid-elastic vibration are studied. The results show that motion and flow types of a single cylinder in uniform flow are in agreement with the previous studies in literatures. In shear flow, however, as the shear parameter increases, the fluid-elastic vibration of the cylinder is induced, and thus amplitude of the cylinder increases considerably. Further, three cylinders in the shear flow are studied. Three cylinders arrangements (classified as side-by-side, tandem ,and stagger) and the distance between cylinders are the factors to cause fluid-elastic vibration. Compared with the single cylinder motion, three cylinders motion¡¦s critical flow velocity is smaller than that of the single cylinder motion, which means two cylinders motion are more subject to fluid-elastic vibration.

Fluid-elastic vibration of a circular cylinder in the shear flow of an air jet

Yang, Chao-cong 11 September 2007 (has links)
In the study, vibrations of small elastic cylinders mounted in the shear flow of an air jet are investigated experimentally. In such cases, the amplitude of the cylinder oscillation changed along with the variation of the jet velocity gradient is due to the influence of fluid elastic instability. The experiment is based on the method of the magnetic field induction to measure the motion of the small cylinder, and it involves measurements of the varying velocity in a jet through the hot- wire anemometer. We focus on the fluid-elastic instability of a circular cylinder in shear flow. The vibration behaviors of the cylinder above the critical condition are be examined with different velocity gradients, mass ratios and damping factors. The vibration amplitude of the cylinder is also larger as velocity gradient is larger. With lower mass ratios and damping factor, moreover, the orbit of cylinder is larger. When the velocity gradient is increasing, the frequency of cylinder vibration becomes higher.

Numerical simulation of flow induced vibration of two circular cylinders in shear flow

Sung, Yung-lin 17 August 2009 (has links)
This research is aimed to investigate the fluid-elastic instability of the motion simulation using a single cylinder and two cylinders within the context of shear flows. T/D, shear parameter and mass ratio are parameters to be investigated. Besides, cylindrical motion treks and the amplitude are also analyzed. Continuity equation and momentum equations are solved alternatively using a CFD package, Fluent 6.3.26. The force caused by the flow interacts with the cylindrical motion. Thus Motion meshing techniques together with the cylindrical motion equations are employed in the simulation. Under different flow conditions, flow types and cylindrical motion models, lock-in and fluid-elastic instability are studied. The results show that motion and flow types of a single cylinder within the context of the uniform flow have a general agreement with the related literatures. In terms of the shear flow, however, as the shear parameter increases, the fluid-elastic instability is caused, and thus amplitude of the cylinder augments considerably. Further, double cylinders in the shear flow are studied. Double cylinder arrangements( classified as side-by-side and tandem) and the distance between cylinders are the factors to cause fluid-elastic instability. Compared with the single cylindrical motion, double cylindrical motion¡¦s critical flow velocity is smaller than the single cylindrical motion, which means double cylindrical motion are more subject to fluid-elastic instability.

Rheo-NMR and synchrotron X-ray diffraction characterization of nanostructures of triglycerides crystallizing from solutions

20 April 2011 (has links)
The characteristics of crystallized fats depend on their solid fraction (SF) and fractal structures, which are affected by shear during crystallization. Binary mixtures of trilaurin (LLL) and trimyristin (MMM) diluted in triolein were used as samples. Pure diluted LLL and MMM were also studied. Samples were examined at different crystallization temperatures either statically or at shear rates of 800, 80, and 8 1/s. The sample cell combined a rheometer with a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) device to measure SF value and apparent viscosity. The measurements were compared to equations that describe the dependency of viscosity on solid volume fraction, to understand the effect of crystallites orientation at higher shear rates. Phase transitions during crystallization were observed by time-resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction under similar conditions. Shear induced a strong reduction in phase onset and transition time and variations in phase distributions and the crystal size.
