Investigating non???pedagogical sociability of asynchronous computer supported collaborative learning environments

Abedin, Babak , Information Systems, Technology & Management, Australian School of Business, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
While technologically Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) systems have been considerably improved, previous studies have shown that the social aspect of CSCL is often neglected or assumed to happen automatically just by creating such virtual learning environments. Several studies on the other hand showed sociability of CSCL environments strongly relate to online learning enjoyment and effectiveness of learning. Social interactions in CSCL can be broadly categorized as pedagogical/on-task and non-pedagogical/non-task interactions. Accordingly, this thesis investigates the non-pedagogical sociability of CSCL environments and primarily demonstrates that non-pedagogical/non-task interactions do occur in these environments. In addition, this thesis operationalizes the notion of non-pedagogical sociability of CSCL environments and determines factors that impact on it. A multi method approach for data collection and analysis is used. Results of a content analysis extend the Transcript Analysis Tool (TAT) instrument, the tool used for the content analysis, and show the presence and pattern of a substantial amount of nonpedagogical social exchanges occur in both virtual task-related as well as non-taskrelated spaces. The findings from the survey data, on the other hand, support the SIP theory and SIDE theory predictions and revealed that the sense of cohesion and awareness of others significantly impact on the non-pedagogical sociability of CSCL. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the perception of self-representation and perception of compatibility affect the sense of cohesion and awareness of others and indirectly contribute to the perceived non-pedagogical sociability of the environment. The findings of this thesis can be used in future research for investigating the relationship between the non-pedagogical sociability of CSCL and other CSCL factors. It also provides CSCL lecturers and facilitators with a conceptual model by which sociability can be explicitly addressed in their course planning and delivery processes. From a practical point of view, this study develops and validates an instrument that guides required changes in the CSCL for improving the non-pedagogical social functionality of the environment. The findings also stress the importance of virtual spaces in CSCL design exercises in order to provide opportunities for students to have non-task discussions and to reflect on their own and others??? experiences and ideas.

Projeto vizinhança : em análise a sociabilidade no espaço urbano

Krammes, Adriana Delbrücke January 2017 (has links)
In the urban environment governed by the capitalist logic, there are few moments to strengthen ties, to make new friends and to enjoy conversations for the simple satisfaction that moments like these provide. Sociability, in the sense attributed to it by Georg Simmel, is hampered by the imperatives of modern life which result from a logic in which human relations are permeated by monetary economy. Given that sociability is a human need, people organize themselves in such a way as to avoid this isolation produced by the capitalist city. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate in the light of the theoretical contributions of the German sociologist, the way in which people organize spaces that provide opportunities for sharing and fraternal coexistence in the urban environment. Through a qualitative approach, we take the Neighborhood Project (PV) as an object of empirical research and use semi-structured interviews and exploratory research as data collection techniques. The PV is an open collective that activates idle spaces by transforming them, for a determined time, into places for people to get to meet each other, exchange experiences and share ideas while doing many activities. With the help of content analysis, it was possible to verify that initiatives such as the PV contribute to soften the isolation in urban life insofar.

Shopping and Sociability at an Embedded Market in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico

Trevizo, Elizabeth Victoria 01 August 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the anthropology of markets and shopping practices in Mercado Pino Suárez, an indoor market located in Centro Historico in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico. The research objective of this anthropological fieldwork is to investigate how markets are a center for social relationships that influence shopping and consumption. Sociability between consumers and vendors is significant as it defines a market. The field research is a two-month-long summer project conducted to understand why people shop at the market, with a major focus on shopping for food related products. Interviews and participant observation, including participation as a consumer or as a volunteer vendor, support observations of social shopping practices that occur within the market. Shoppers attend the market for various reasons, such as purchasing for convenience, price, and quality of the products. However, this thesis will elucidate how shoppers visit the market for the experience of socializing which contributes to familiarity and trust from knowing vendors and their products. Mercado Pino Suárez exemplifies how the market is a shopping experience where vendors and shoppers can be neighbors, friends, and family. Shopper and vendor interactions go beyond economic reasons where people share ideas about food and cuisine, thus illuminating the market’s significance in shaping local culture.

Comunicação e sociabilidade comunitária:no ritmo dos fotologs

Kalyandra Pontes Vaz 09 September 2005 (has links)
This dissertation has as main goal the comprehension of contemporary sociability, how it presents itself and which are the influences of the communication technologies in the social environments through the Internet, especially in photologs. Starting from the concept of contemporary sociability, strutctured in networks, it is hightlighted by the tension between the high-speed pace of the technologies and the slow-motion futilities of the everyday life. The return of the communal ideal, the desire for a permanent link with the world and other individuals, the identification with different life styles, along with a sharing of emotions and intimacies and the valuing of individual personal stories, are the main characteristics of this communal sociability, which gains strength in a world where communication is increasingly mediated by computers.

O choro que se aprende no colégio: a formação de chorões na Escola Portátil de Música do Rio de Janeiro / The choro learned at school: the formation of choro musicians in the Escola Portátil de Música of Rio de Janeiro

Carolina Gonçalves Alves 07 October 2009 (has links)
The aim of this study was analyze the formation of choro musicians in the Escola Portátil de Música (EPM) of Rio de Janeiro. In this project of musical formation, which brings together students interested in choro, we can see how the musicians share certain tastes and preferences and how they undergo certain rules on how to play. There are rules in the formation of the pandeirista of choro that distinguish him of the pandeiristas of samba, for example. In Escola Portátil the rules are formed, what strengthens the group formed and increase distance from other groups that dont have the same training. The use of the skin tambourine is one of the rules that increase the strengthening of the group. These rules, which are passed by a group of teachers, directly or indirectly, to their students are captured and incorporated to the daily of the School, strengthening the group identity. The result is the formation of a group of musicians, unreceptive to other types of formulations. Moreover new configurations of choro arise from the spread of music that is translated in the School nationally and internationally. In short this work arises from the attempt to evaluate the universe of rules that appears in theEscola Portátil de Música ofRio de Janeiro, taking into account the statement of identity from the difference.

Machado, Carlos Eduardo. January 2017 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The focus of this dissertation lies in the theme of temporalities, thought here in its multiple dimensions, constructions, perceptions, representations and uses. To approach this universe, I start from the narratives of the inhabitants of Borá, a small municipality located in the interior of the State of São Paulo (West region), considered by IBGE (2010) as the smallest population in Brazil, totaling 805 time. Most of the Boraan population (as they are identified) is composed of families descendants of the pioneers who populated the locality in the first decades of the twentieth century. Over the years, more families have come to the city by forming a sociability based on kinship ties and alliances based on neighborhood relations. This apparently cohesive universe was marked by a process of demographic, economic, social and cultural transformation due to the advance of the sugar-alcohol agribusiness in the region. Years earlier, between 2003 and 2004, an old sugar and alcohol processing plant located in the limits of the municipality resumed its activities. In addition to the local workforce, in the harvest seasons, the mill hired workers from other states, generating a migratory movement to Borá. In 2013, a housing complex was inaugurated to accommodate these workers and their families. In the same year, a significant increase in population was registered in Borá, being no longer the smallest in the country. In view of this, we turn our gaze to the universe of understanding ...
