Text in English / This dissertation investigates the problem of significance conflict resolution as a meaningful ministry of the Church in ecclesial, social and political conflict.
Recognising the fact that conflict has been an experience of humankind since the beginning of time the research focuses on the Church's role in socio-political conflict during the years of the National Party rule in South Africa. A number of theological and practical questions arise from the problem of conflict and its resolution in relation to the Church. The question is raised: does conflict resolution as a concept and strategy have a credible theological content. In order to explore this problem the dissertation first develops a theology of conflict. The theology of conflict forms the basis for a theology of conflict resolution. The thesis
is that conflict, inherent in all human experience, is not good or evil. Rather it has the potential for destruction and transformation. It is the transformatory possibility that needs to be promoted.
The thesis examines conflict resolution strategies of leading theorists and
practitioners and tests them as viable approaches to be adopted by the Church.
However it finds that conflict resolution will be accepted as a role of the Church if it can be formulated in convincing theological principles.
An analysis of reconciliation and conflict resolution focuses on the way
reconciliation is perceived in the political context. It then probes the theological relationship between reconciliation and conflict resolution. Reconciliation is more than conflict resolution. The scope of reconciliation includes (a) the initiative of God, (b) addressing the predicament of alienation, brokenness and distress ( c)
through the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ the Mediator (d) who reconciles the universe to God.
However, conflict resolution has an indispensable role in the reconciliation process.
Through the ministry of conflict resolution the Church facilitates confrontation between individuals or groups and contributes towards transformation in relationships where there is conflict.
The thesis then probes the possibilities for conflict resolution to be an integral part of of on-going pastoral ministry in the belief that pro-active conflict resolution is a source of social and ecclesial transformation. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D. The thesis deals with one major issue of how the amaXhosa authors reflect change and transition in the lives of their characters in the period under consideration. This change pertains both to the socio-politico-economic life of the people concerned and the contents of the books and the style of the authors' writings. The study is ground-breaking in that it goes beyond common dissection of the structural elements of the books to a synthetic study of their themes, subject matter, character portrayal and setting. The primary aim is to give a holistic overview of the changing culture of the black people against the backdrop of subjugation and transformation.
Chapter 1 contains all the formal preliminary information such as aim, method, context, relevance and topicality of study.
Chapter 2 anchors the study in the newspaper age as a solid foundation for the amaXhosa literature.
Chapter 3 is an overview of the beginnings of literary endeavours among the amaXhosa and how they reflect the impact of socio-economic pressures in the lives of the people.
Chapter 4 further illustrates the impact of education and Christianisation on the blacks as well as growing political awareness among the authors.
Chapter 5 focuses on culture-clash among the amaXhosa as a result of the alienating influence of both the church and the school.
Chapter 6 highlights changes in society at the height of oppression under the previous political dispensation.
Chapters 7 and 8 reflect the authors' thinking and how they depict changes in post-apartheid South Africa while Chapter 9 focuses on the role of Language Boards in restricting freedom of writing and expression during the apartheid years.

The release of ex-president Nelson Mandela on 10 February 1990, introduced transformation in South Africa. The road to transformation, in a post apartheid era, placed pressure and demands on the social work profession and the professionals. Change was inevitable (Lesnik 1997:164) while the inequities and the disparities of the past had to be eliminated and replaced with transformed services.
This study explores the transformational challenges experienced in contemporary social work practice at The Department of Social Development, Johannesburg, South Africa.
A non-probability sample was selected (Babbie and Mouton 2004:166). A combination of the qualitative and the quantitative approaches, with more emphasis on the quantitative approach was utilized. Questionnaires were used for data collection and analysis was done according to the framework as described by Tesch in De Vos et al., (1998:343). The adoption of the 1996 Constitution in recognition of the historic imbalances that
South Africa inherited from its past, affirms the commitment to the promotion of human
rights including the right to equality. The emphasis on the right to equality in the
Constitution and other related laws discussed in the study represents a guarantee for
both men and women the right to equal treatment and benefit of the law.
The point of departure is based on the premise that views the law as an instrument that
has the potential to effect social change. The primary purpose is to determine various
factors that are an impediment to the significance of the law for the promotion of the right
to gender equality. The objective is to establish with sufficient certainty the substantive
conception of the right to gender equality in post-apartheid South Africa.
This dissertation examines and provides a brief overview of the development and the
intersection of the principles of non-discrimination at the international and regional
spheres and their influence in broadening the scope for enforcement of gender equality
in South Africa. It provides a literature review and an analysis of the equality
jurisprudence of South Africa’s Constitutional Court and its influence to the lowest
structures of the judiciary in promoting the right to gender equality. This undertaking is
reinforced by the primary purpose in this study of examining various factors that are an
impediment to the promotion of the right to gender equality.
It discovers that the establishment of a “just society” is difficult where the significance of
the law is affected by the lack of legal knowledge and other related factors identified in
the study. It establishes that the promotion of the right to gender equality is a gradual
process that should not be undertaken overnight but on a continuous basis.
It can be drawn from the findings in this study that the law “alone” is limited in its
application in addressing socio-legal problems. Despite the limitation, the use of law is
not a goal that should be discarded as it lays the framework for the determination of the
significance of legal measures for social change.

The effects of social and political dislocation on Persianate children's literature : change and continuityAbdelsadek, Nafisa 02 1900 (has links)
This thesis seeks to investigate the various forces that have shaped modern
Persianate children‘s literature - history, revolution, political climate, government,
institutions, writers, education, and so on. The historical origins of tales popular in
modern times, and of themes recurrent in stories from past times to present are
analyzed, along with other factors which have shaped Persianate children‘s literature.
The thesis begins with a historical and theoretical overview relating to change
and continuity in Persianate children‘s literature. It examines the influence of ancient
texts on modern Persianate children‘s stories. The cultural development reflected in
the organizational infrastructure of institutions is also examined, as well as other
contemporary influences, both social and political, in order to assess how these have
affected modern Persianate children‘s literature. The contents of children‘s books are
analyzed from different aspects, including their representation of social values.
Concerns of children themselves are shown in examples of their own work; in
addition, works of illustrators of children‘s books, and examples from the extended
body of Persianate children‘s literature in Tajikistan are analyzed.
Modern children‘s literature is the product of a number of influences and
while differences can be perceived between historical periods, underlying similarities
can also be seen which show a continuity of socio-political purpose, either
supporting the status quo or challenging it. The thesis is concerned with this interplay
between the recurring uses of children‘s literature; moralistic, didactic, the political
agenda of its authors, criticism of the status quo, etc. and the surface changes which
attract attention and which create an appearance of change in its underlying purpose.
Fashions and styles may change, but children still read, firstly in order to learn to
read, and then for information and amusement. The author contends that, in reality a
limited number of changes are possible in the purpose of children‘s literature, and the
age-old arguments likewise continue about what those are: entertainment or
preparation for the harsh realities of life, retreat into fantasy and acceptance of one‘s

Conditional cash transfers as a means of addressing poverty in South AfricaGovender, Megan 06 1900 (has links)
In this thesis the feasibility of making social transfers conditional in South Africa is examined with specific focus on the Child Support Grant. Currently, there are more than 8.7 million children receiving Child Support Grants, which is impacting positively on poverty alleviation. Yet, social outcomes, especially in health and education are poor. The conditionality of transfers will compel the parents/guardians of these children to ensure that the children regularly attend school and also utilise the health services. Conditional cash transfers, by their nature, attempt to address the low demand for these services, which are available but are not being utilised.
The National Income Dynamic Study (NIDS) is employed to test empirically whether it will be feasible to institute conditionality to the CSG. The methodology adopted is to determine if there is any statistically significant difference (education and health outcomes) between the recipients of the CSG with non-recipients of the CSG. Moreover, the population (as extrapolated from the sample) is separated into four groups, namely, children that qualify and receive the grant (QR), children that qualify and do not receive the grant (QNR), children that do not qualify and receive the grant (NQR) and children that do not qualify and do not receive the grant (NQNR). Subsequently, educational and health outcomes are compared between these groups to determine if there is any statistically significant difference between them.
The results demonstrate that school attendance is high among children, and there is no significant difference in school attendance between the recipients and non-recipients of the CSG; as well as between the QR, QNR, NQR and NQNR. Moreover, there is no substantial difference in education outcomes (grade repetition) between the recipients and non-recipients of the CSG; as well as between the four groups. Similar results are found for health where there is no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding utilisation of health services as well as health outcomes.
Therefore, conditionality of the CSG would not be feasible, as it does not address the causes of poor health and education outcomes, which are mainly due to supply-side deficiencies. Government should rather strengthen current poverty alleviation policies which seem to be impacting positively on poverty reduction. / Economics / D. Com (Economics)

This study aimed at determining the impact of three selected local NGO’s programmes at grassroots level. The teaching of civic education in Zambia : an examination of trends in the teaching of civic education in schoolsMuleya, Gistered 08 1900 (has links)
This study focused on the teaching of Civic Education in Zambia. Specifically, the study examined pedagogical practices in relation to the teaching of Civic Education in schools. It is argued in this study that following right pedagogical practices in the teaching of Civic Education can lead to social change and transformation of society. As such, the purpose of the study was to ascertain therefore the extent to which Civic Education was enhancing or impeding social change and transformation in society. In order to realize the objectives of the study, an exploratory research design was used. The study found out that Civic Education in schools was not modelled on practices that can lead to social change and transformation of society; service learning approaches were rarely promoted in Civic Education lessons; teaching approaches in colleges and the university with respect to Civic Education are greatly lacking; teaching and learning materials in Civic Education were not readily available in schools; teachers of Civic Education were not grounded in the key theoretical and pedagogical perspectives underpinning Civic Education. The study therefore concludes that with correct pedagogical practices and approaches Civic Education can lead to social change and transformation of society. / Educational Foundations / D. Ed. Is There a Trade-off? Infant Health Outcomes and Managed Care CompetitionMoore, Shana L. 01 January 2016 (has links)
This study offers insights into the impact of competition among Managed Care organizations (MCOs) on infant birthing charges and birth outcomes. Kentucky provides one of the nation’s first case studies to determine successes and failures of Medicaid MCOs, and by doing so, provides a prediction of the impact of Patient Protection Affordable Care Act (PPACA) competition on healthcare costs and birth outcomes. An analysis of a natural policy experiment in the state of Kentucky reveals that infants insured by a Medicaid MCO stay longer in hospitals, are less healthy, and cost more than those insured under Traditional Medicaid prior to a policy change. Utilizing a difference-in-difference-in-difference (DDD) estimation, this study found initial evidence in a competitive MCO environment of Traditional Medicaid average birth charges substantially more than births under a Medicaid MCO, while outcomes also revealed the incidence of normal delivery increased almost identical to that of private insurance. However, after a short time, average birth charges for infants born under Medicaid MCO climb higher than other payer-types and infant health begins to decline. Outcomes of this study signal that Managed Care infants are actually less healthy and cost substantially more than anticipated but it is possible that these outcomes can be attributed to insurance selection.
