________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Many Spanish−speakers who live in Brazil and learn Portuguese as a foreign language develop a premature fossilization in their interlanguage. This interpretativist research verifies the attitudes of native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese about oral utterance in Portuguese of Spanish−speakers and their reasons. The sources of the data collected are individual interviews, recorded on tape and transcribed afterwards. The data from the subjects is analized.Conclutions shedd light on the very important interference of mother language on the speak of Spanish−speakers. After that, six native Brazilian Portuguese speakers listen to rate the analysed utterances selected from subjects productions with the aim of knowing their reaction. The work finds instances of positive and negative attitudes towards the oral production of Spanish−speaker by Portuguese native speakers. Positive reception privileges comunication. Negative reception privileges grammatical correction. These attitudes serves to identify the incidence of a Brazilian interlocutor reception in the process of interlanguage fossilization of Spanish speakers.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / With the conviction that human language creates meanings in social contexts, that it is a sociosemiotic system which enables us to represent the world and interact via texts and that it is one of the elements of the social scale which affects and is affected by factors of ideological, symbolic, political and institutional order, among others, this thesis aims to interpret how texts, realized in different genres, organize and build the discursive moment of social events. Another theoretical conviction that guides this work, of qualitative character, is that that discourse includes modes of representation, constitutes the structures, practices and social events, and builds identities and power relations, legitimizing or transforming them. The conclusions of this thesis point to the fact that the discursive moment of social events can be encompassed, solely for analytical and educational purposes, by a more rhetorical dimension, the genre matrix, and by a more ideological dimension, the discursive matrix. The first corresponds to the functional structure predominant in events, causing them to act in society in the rhetorical planes of argumentation, narration, injunction, exposition/explanation, prediction or dialogue. The second, the discursive matrix, corresponds to the set of ideological and symbolic configurations which are constructed on each event that takes place in society. The indissoluble junction of these two matrixes constitutes the "voice" of social events, a construction which occurs by the action that texts, realized in different genres, make possible in terms of events. The main theoretical framework on which this thesis is based comes from the Critical Discourse Analysis (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001, 2003 and 2006; CHOULIARAKI & FAIRCLOUGH, 1999), the Systemic-Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1994, HALLIDAY & MATTHIESSEN, 2004; EGGINS , 2002 and 2010) and the Theory of Multimodality (KRESS & van LEEUWEN, 2006; KRESS, 2010, JEWITT & KRESS, 2008).For the considerations about the concept of (textual) genres, their role in social organization and the structure of their composition, contributions lie in the propositions of Bakhtin (2010), Adam (2008), Bronckart (1999), Fairclough (2001 and 2003 ), Miller (1994), Jordan (1997), Marcuschi (2005 and 2008), Trimble (1985) and Swales (1990).

_________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation describes and analyses the estrategies of relativization of prepositional syntagmae of Brazilian portuguese. It aims on studying the appearence and frequence of standard patterns of processes in a context of a high stilistic self-monitoring. To do so, it has teachers, with college degrees, and last semester letters students as information sources. It proposes to deal with variation in a very descriptive way, connecting its appearences to intra and extra linguistic factors, detecting the incorporation of the standard varieties to the most formal uses of language. The learning of the standard relative clause is very related to formal education, because its appearence in everyday spoken language is almost zero. The empirical data show that there are two possible relative clauses in the battlefield: the standard one and the severing one pp-chopping. Besides the fact that the severing relative clause is very productive in written texts, the greatest number of occurrencies found was that of the standard variety. The results also draw to the fact that using standard relative clauses is conditioned to very strict structures of the language, so much so that they end up behaving as fixed language cluters, therefore there is very little real acquaintance with gramatical metalinguistics. The socio-cultural profile of the informers may lead to factors that privileges one variety over the other, bringing implications to portuguese language teaching in brazilian schools.

Ao lado disso descreve a situação linguística atual da comunidade, considerando-se sua organização sócio-cultural e suas relações com a sociedade regional envolvente / Abstract: Pomeranos' community, this research's object, is formed by seventy families who belong to Linha Figueira, from kilometer 19 to 21, bordering Cacoal and Espigão D'Oeste, in Rondônia. It is a community formed by descending of immigrants who came from ancient Pomerânia (today part of it belongs to Germany and the other part belongs to Poland), to Brazil at the end of last century (1870). The most of the first imigrated pomeranos came to Espírito Santo and others moved themselves by Brazil. Several families from these pomeranos who were in Espírito Santo established themselves in Rondônia in 1970. Because they maintained themselves together, pomeranos preserved many of their traditions, as their Luteran religious, their cookery habits, residential architecture. Their traditional parties as marriages represent one of the appearance better conserved of their beginning culture. Pomeranos'community got, in Espigão D'Oeste, to maintain a kind of geographical and cultural isolation, but the actual contact with the .regional society is promoting an uncultural process which is reflected in social, religious, cultural and linguistic areas. Pomerânia's language is the traditional language of the group, available in their living together and in their economics and cultural activities. But, in a slow way, portuguese language is starting entering the community and we can assert that Espigão D'Oeste's pomeranos suffer a linguistic change. The situation of linguistic contact with the regional society promoted a disturbance in pomeranos language into the community because the introduction of portuguese language. This study presents those pomeranos' history, details their usages and customs and it has as principal objective their linguistc route's history, promoting, in a special way, the sociolinguistics factors of that route. The investigation about the linguistc route in this community comes from dates of her history, trying to understand the changes suffered during the time. Beside that, it describes the actuallinguistc situation in the community, considering the socio-cultural organization and their relationship in the regional involved society / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

In addition to a brief introduction to outline the problem, this work consists of four chapters: the first one deals with the history of Arab immigration to Brasil, its motives and waves and the present panorama of the Arab descendents in the Brasilian society. This information is derived mainly from Knowlton (1951), Safady (1973), Hajjar (1985) and Zeghidour (1982). The second chapter examines the various extralinguistic factors that favour or impede the assimilation of the Arab immigrants in São Paulo and has as a theoretical basis Gaarder (1979), Grosjean (1982), Fasold (1984), Giles et al (1977) among others. The third chapter investigates the present linguistic situation of the Brasilian Arabs in São Paulo by analyzing the process of language shift from Arabic to Portuguese. The analysis is carried out in the light of Weinreich (1952), Fishman (1965), (1966), (1972) and other relevant studies. Finally, the fourth chapter deals with the attitudes of the Arab descendents in relation to Arabic and Portuguese. Shuy and Fasold (1973) and Ryan and Giles (1982) were of great utility in this respect. This work shows that the majority of the Arab descendents in São Paulo have Portuguese as the first language and that Arabic is being threatened of extinction as a living language used by them on a daily basis / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

Como ponto de partida, foram definidos formalmente / Abstract: This work compares the behavior of adjuntcts (and adjunctions) and discursive "fillers" in constituent boundaries of spoken and written Brazilian Portuguese, from the perspective of X-bar theory and other principIes that holds the Generative Theory. As a starting point, syntactic pattems of predication and complementation that forms the syntactic "background" were defined formally and elucidate positions, with attending restrictions, that the different kinds of "fillers" (syntatics and discursives) holds between constituent boundaries. The adjuncts examined referred only to non nuclear adjuncts such as adverbial phrases, adverbial clauses, topics and antitopics. Adjunction was understood as referring to a process which the constituent adjoins an X or XP position, directly by merge, such as adverbs that do not require movement or by movement for the "fillers" that occupy some positions by movement. This process included aspectual adverbs, clitics, some focus structures and floating quantifiers. In contrasting spoken and written language, the methodology followed previous works of the Grupo de Relações Gramaticais do Português Falado (Grammatical Relations of Spoken Portuguese Study Group) that analysed data using quantitative measures that considered the factor group as organizers of the universe sampled. The analysis showed that the major difference between spoken and written Portuguese, in terms of boundary "fillers", is displayed by filling in the margins whereas spoken language privileges the left margin and written language privileges the right margin. In addition, filling distribution displays that adjuncts are the "fillers" that occurs primarily in written language, whereas in spoken language more adjuncts and discursive "fillers" occur' Finally, syntactic and discursive "fillers" displayed similar behavior in the two modalities, differing only in terms of percentages / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística

Evidence in favor of this view is provided by the variety of Portuguese spoken in Rio Branco, the capital city of the state of Acre, in the Amazon. Having as theoretical basis the principles of Quantitative Sociolinguistics, this work discusses the variation in verbal agreement with third person plural subjects, which correlates with both linguistic and extralinguistic factors. The data, base is recorded oral speech of inbabitants of Rio Branco of lower class and of about the same age. The variation process is highlighted by means of the analysis of the data derived through the use of the Varbrol 2 program. The linguistic factors found to strongly correlate with the application of the verbal agreement role, in the speech of the subjects, are the verb-subject position, and the phonetic saliency inthe singular/plural opposition. The extralinguistic factor considered, namely level of schooling. has also proved to play an important role in the application of the rule / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

This work deals with the description and analysis of number agreement in the noun phrase (NP) in a variety of Brazilian Portuguese, based on a corpus of recorded oral speech of lower class inhabitants of the city of Rio Branco (the capital of Acre - a Brazilian state in the Amazon). It follows the Quantitative Sociolinguistics model of data processing combined with some aspects of the linguistic functionalistic theory. The introduction of the theoretical framework within which theinvestigation is developed is followed by the description and analysis of the linguistic variable Phonetic Saliency comprising three main dimensions: Morphophonological processes in plural formation the tonic accent Position, and Number of syllables of the lexical item in its singular form. Besides these dimensions, other linguistic factors are considered, such as, the phonetic/phonological Environment after the item, the linear Position of the constituents of the NP, the grammatical Class, and the plural Marks preceding the item under analysis. The social variables studied were Sex, individual Performance, and level of Schooling, subdivided in three categories: (a) illiterate, (b) one to four years of primary school instruction, and (c) one to four years ofhigh school instruction. The results of the analysis were then compared with those of tive other studies on the same subject in order to fmd out possible generalizations concerning the behavior of nominal agreement in Brazilian Portuguese. The correlation of linguistic and social variables with the formal marking of plural in the NP shows that agreement in the NP in Brazilian Portuguese is a case of synchronic variation rule, favoring the tendency to guarantee the presence of plural indication in the first constituent of the NP, and to significantly reduce the nominal inflection marks in the other elements / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

Such a change can be related to the reduction of the inflectional paradigm, which evolved from six distinctive fonns to a paradigm showing no more than three distinctive endings, as a result of the replacement of the 1rs! person plural nós by the expression a gente, which combines with the T person singular verb fonn. As a consequence, the Avoid Pronoun PrincipIe that leads to the null representation of the subject whenever full identification is possible is lost, and the null subject becomes an infrequent option. The present study, based on the speech of 13 upper educated people, belong;ng to three different age groups, follows the track of the loss and makes it possible (a) to identify the contexts which were fírst defeated by the full pronominal variant, as well as the ones which still resist to it; (b) to confínn the implementation of the change through the comparison of the three age groups' perfonnance; (c) to fínd evidences of the embedding of the change in the system, represented by the irrestrict use of left dislocated subjects - complete/y absent in the above mentioned pro-drop languages; and (d) to support the status of pro to the null subject in Brazílian Portuguese / Doutorado / Doutor em Ciências
