Based on the theoretical and methodological foundations given by Variational Sociolinguistics, 24 personal experience interviews with informants from the community were carried out, from where we collected the sample. The statistical analysis of data has shown us that the rule we focused on has a modest recurrence in the community, being the /o/ heightening more frequent than the /e/ heightening. The following linguistic variables were relevant to /o/ heightening: Syllable Type, Previous Context, Stressed Vowel Context, Following Context, Unstressed Vowel Location in the Word, and the extralinguistic variables Age, Job and Schooling. The statistical analysis revealed that the relevant linguistic variables for final unstressed /e/ heightening are Grammatical Class, Previous Context, Unstressed Vowel Location in the Word, Stressed Vowel Context, and the social variables Schooling and Gender.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research focuses on the use of the first person plural in the speech of speakers from the state of Goiás, Brazil. The study is supported on the theoretical assumptions and methodology (Goldvarb X) of the Variationist Sociolinguistics of a Labovian base, as well as on the historical registries and ethnographic descriptions. This paper presents statistical results on the alternation of the pronoun ‘nós’ (we) and the pronoun form ‘a gente’ (we), and the subject- verb agreement for each of them. A total number of 2412 tokens derived from the speech of 55 people with at least 10 years of formal schooling revealed that related to the alternation of both pronouns there is 77% of ‘a gente’ and 23% of ‘nós’. According to sociolinguistic studies, this configuration is similar to the ones in the rest of the country. Regarding the non subject-verb agreement, when using the first person plural forms, the results were: 22% singular verbal inflection with ‘nós’ (we), and 3% plural verbal inflection with ‘a gente’ (we). The dimension of non subject-verb agreement with ‘nós’ by the people who had more than 10 years of formal schooling characterizes a linguistic identity based on cultural country origins, which are highly praised in this State. In its history, for a long period of time, Goiás maintained a lack of social and economic exchanges with the dynamic centers throughout the country. As a matter of fact, its urbanization process had increased more emphatically during ththe second half of the 20 century while a new capital city for the State (Goiânia) and a new capital city for the country (Brasília which is located in the state’s territory) were settled. The statistical results of Goldvarb X for non subject-verb agreement with ‘nós’ (we) indicated the variable rhythm which points to the avoidance of the proparoxitone term (a word with the accent on the antepenultimate syllable); as well as the social variables, age group, schooling and gender indicating the youngest, the speakers with up to 10 years of schooling and the women as the truly supporters of the singular verb with 'nós' (non-agreement). This arrangement presumes a linguistic change in Goiás increasing the non subject-verb agreement with 'nós' (change from below). The results for non subject-verb agreement with ‘a gente’ pointed out the linguistic variables type of subject, rhythm, verb tense, and clause type, likewise the social variable, age group. Concerning the alternation of first person plural forms by the native speakers of Goiás, focusing the a gente, the following linguistic variables stand out: verb tense, rhythm, and type of subject. Furthermore, the following social variables were emphasized: age group, schooling, and gender.

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation presents a study on the approach to linguistic variation in Portuguese Language textbooks, which have been approved by the Ministry of Education for high school level use. In general, our purpose is to evaluate the language concepts in the textbooks and the way such concepts ascertain socio-linguistics aspects for both the student and the teacher, as the meaning of “right” and “wrong”, linguistic variation, language change and language prejudice. Thus, by believing that school is the best way for granting the population education and that the textbook is the major instrument used in this assignment, it is important to ensure how these textbooks are presenting the linguistic variation.

O objetivo é investigar o papel dos fatores linguísticos e não-linguísticos no uso variável do imperativo, ampliando o entendimento do fenômeno. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This thesis consists of the analysis of the linguistic variation and change in the use of the grammatical imperative in Brazilian Portuguese in the theoretical and methodological perspective of Variationist Sociolinguistics. The main objective of the study is to investigate the role of linguistic and non-linguistic factors in the use of the imperative variable, enhancing the understanding of the phenomenon. The main sample used in this study consists of a group of men and women who are originally from Fortaleza and at the time when the interviews were made lived in Brasília. The analysis of the linguistic variables reveals the weight of factors such as the affirmative and negative polarity of imperative structures as well as the role of discursive parallelism in the process of linguistic change. Furthermore, it brings elements that contribute to the discussion on the indicative/subjunctive alternation in the use of the imperative in the discursive context of the pronouns tu or você1. In relation to the analysis of non-linguistic factors, the vigorous effect of the variables “gender” and “speaker identity” stands out in the process of variation and change in the speech of people who leave Fortaleza – a region where the use of forms such as leve, pegue and venha2 prevails – to a region where the predominant forms are leva, pega, vem2. The sample of the study reveals significant differences between male and female speakers in the use of the imperative. The statistical analysis shows that the average frequency of the use of the indicative form of the imperative by women is 74%, while men use those forms in 31% of the occurrences. In order to comprehend these results, identity characteristics of the speakers were investigated. Considering the studied corpus, the statistical results proves that the speakers who keep themselves closer to the cultural values of Brasília favour the use of the indicative form of the imperative; on the other hand, the speakers who keep farther from those values tend not to favour the use of this form. The final reflection on the analysis presented on this thesis is made in the light of the ideas of Eckert (2005), who analyses variationist research in the last 40 years in an effort to divide them in three big waves, on which we find elements that situates our work.

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The objective of this research is to apply interactional sociolinguistics studies, to form a sociolinguistic profile of the people that live in the northern rural area of Goias, through ethnographic description that highlights the comprehension of the surrounding areas. The study tries to demonstrate the lexical repertoire of these people, which presents among many determiners, their archaic lexical characteristics held over from the first explorers routes. And bring to light the interactional behavior in different environments in which they occur, such as in the family circle, institutional, and so on. Starting with the analysis of the corpus that was created, it was possible to verify the linguistic speech contribution relating to the lexical formation in this community that was influenced by the first explorers trails that spread out into the central areas of Brazil during the colonial period.

The present work aimed to identify and analyze - in regard to local linguistic variety - the sociolinguistic attitudes of the natives from Cáceres, MT, as well as of the inhabitants - migrants - who have been living here in the region for the past eight years The great flow of immigrants to the Center-West region of Brazil, for the last three decades provoked impacts and ruptures into the physical, biological, political and cultural structures of the referred region. A alteração dessas posições acarreta alteração do valor discursivo. The purpose clauses codify a goal, whose execution manifests the movement :from X to Y in the intention world that can realize in the physical word simultaneously. The purpose clauses which come up from the data are the canonical and discursive hypothetical clauses; the afterthought and parenthetic purpose clauses. The non-marked form is TO + INF, that realize in the final position em relation to main clauses. The initial, medial and intercalated positions correspond to the non-marked forms; the first is more common in written language and the second, in spoken language. The alteration in the positions let us to change the discursive value. The hypothetical clauses codify a subject, which is coreferential to the subject of main clauses. This subject plays an agentive role. The main clause is structured with SVO, whose subject is expressed by SP noun in the writlen language and by SP pronoun or verbal affix in the spoken language. The afterthought and parenthetic clauses have as scope the speech act that they help to realize. The afterthought occurs after a polar answer or as additional information in long talk turns.
