Since the 1970's, the frequency of vector-borne diseases such as Dengue, Chikungunya or Zika has significantly increased in the Pacific region. Understanding the factors and mechanisms underlying the spatio-temporal distribution of these diseases provides useful information regarding their control and prevention. In this thesis, we identified dengue spatio-temporal patterns and used modeling tools to identify the factors associated to an increased epidemiological risk at a regional scale (Pacific), a territorial scale (New-Caledonia), and a city scale (Noumea, the capital of New-Caledonia).Every five to seven years, dengue spreads over the entire Pacific as large epidemics caused by the introduction and regional diffusion of one of the four dengue virus serotypes. In New Caledonia, dengue has a seasonal epidemic pattern. The emergence of an epidemic requires specific climatic conditions. The identification of these conditions led to the implementation of an operational early warning system to predict dengue annual epidemic risk. Spatially, at the territorial scale, during epidemic years, high levels of viral circulation are found in areas with higher mean temperature and higher local population densities. Whether at the territorial scale or at the city scale, the spatial diffusion of the virus during epidemics caused by the re-emergence of the same serotype seems limited by the population immunity created by past epidemics. This thesis highlights the complexity and the multi-factorial aspect of vector-borne diseases, and discusses the usefulness of a multi-scale approach in modelling their epidemiology. Besides enhancing our understanding of dengue epidemiology over the Pacific area, we also developed a methodological framework that can be used in other geographical or epidemiological settings for the spatio-temporal analysis and modeling of epidemiological surveillance data.

This PhD thesis presents new models and new results in ruin theory, in the case where claim amounts are heavy-tailed distributed. Classical assumptions like independence and stationarity and univariate analysis are sometimes too restrictive to describe the complex evolution of the reserves of an insurance company. In a dependence context, asymptotics of univariate finite-time ruin probability are computed. This dependence, and the other model parameters are modulated by a Markovian environment process to take into account possible correlation crisis. Then, we introduce some models which describe dependence between claim amounts and claim interarrival times we can find in earthquake or flooding risks. In multivariate framework, we present some risk criteria like multivariate ruin probability or the expectation of the timeintegrated negative part of the risk process. We solve some problems of optimal allocation for these risk measures. Then, we study the impact of the risk dangerousness and of the dependence between lines on this optimal allocation.

In this paper we employ a spatio-temporal model proposed in Rojas (2004) to evaluate the social interaction in crime in São Paulo metropolitan area. We carry out Monte Carlo simulations to test the model estimation capability in different scenarios. We notice that the estimation gets better as the number of observations in time raises. The results point out that São Paulo metropolitan area is a hot spot in the state since we found out a greater social interaction for the homicide index, compared to robbery and thievery.

Recursive movement patterns, by which an individual returns to already visited sites, are very common. Memory use, hypothesized to be advantageous when the environment is predictable, could underlie the emergence of these patterns. However, our understanding of the memory-movement interface has been limited by two knowledge gaps. We still lack appropriate methodologies and theoretical knowledge of the advantages of memory use and of the patterns that emerge from it. During this PhD project, I aimed at filling in some of these gaps. I present here three new frameworks for the analysis of recursive movement patterns. The first one delimits the areas most frequently revisited by an individual, the second one detects periodic revisit patterns, and the third one formally defines and quantifies routine movement behaviour in terms of movement sequence repetitiveness, and presents an algorithm that detects the sub-sequences that are repeated. Using an individual-based model, we show that memory use, when the environment is predictable, is very energetically advantageous compared to foraging strategies that do not use memory, including in a situation of competition, and that it leads to the emergence of stable Home Ranges and spatial segregation between individuals. Memory use invalidates several hypotheses very commonly made in population studies, by leading to a stronger environmental depletion, to a higher equilibrium population size, and to a nonlinear relationship between the total population size and the individually-experienced intensity of competition. Therefore, my PhD thesis contributes to a better understanding of the consequences of memory use for the fitness of individuals, for movement patterns, and for population dynamics. It offers innovative methodologies that quantify and characterize recursive movement patterns that can emerge from its use. These methods should open new opportunities for the comparison of the movements of individuals from different populations and species, and thus the testing of hypotheses about the pressures that select for memory use.

Analyse et interprétation de scènes visuelles par approches collaboratives / Analysis and interpretation of visual scenes through collaborative approaches / Analiza si interpretarea scenelor vizuale prin abordari colaborativeStrat, Sabin Tiberius 04 December 2013 (has links)
During the last years, we have witnessed a great increase in the size of digital video collections. Efficient searching and browsing through such collections requires an indexing according to various meaningful terms, bringing us to the focus of this thesis, the automatic semantic indexing of videos. Within this topic, the Bag of Words (BoW) model, often employing SIFT or SURF features, has shown good performance especially on static images. As our first contribution, we propose to improve the results of SIFT/SURF BoW descriptors on videos by pre-processing the videos with a model of the human retina, thereby making these descriptors more robust to video degradations and sensitivite to spatio-temporal information. Our second contribution is a set of BoW descriptors based on trajectories. These give additional motion information, leading to a richer description of the video. Our third contribution, motivated by the availability of complementary descriptors, is a late fusion approach that automatically determines how to combine a large set of descriptors, giving a high increase in the average precision of detected concepts. All the proposed approaches are validated on the TRECVid challenge datasets which focus on visual concept detection in very large and uncontrolled multimedia content.

Costly victories? : The dynamics of territorial control and insurgent violence against civilians within civil warJansen, Remco January 2018 (has links)
Limited systematic research has investigated how conflict events shape the spatial-temporal variation of insurgent violence against civilians. Although previous research has investigated how degrees of territorial control relate to general levels of violence against civilians, it remains largely an open question how the dynamics within territorial control determine violence against civilians by insurgents. This study aims to address this gap by hypothesizing that (1) insurgents become more likely to commit fatal violence against civilians, and (2) kill more civilians in contested areas when they lose territorial control. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Dataset (ACLED) was used along with Peace Research Institute Oslo’s (PRIO) GRID Dataset to create a novel data frame of all territorially contested area-weeks on the African continent between 1997 and 2017 (n = 3035). Contrary to theoretical expectations, logistic regressions indicate a lower risk of insurgent violence against civilians in contested areas following an insurgent territorial loss than following a break-even. Zero-inflated negative binomial regressions moreover tentatively indicate that insurgents kill more civilians following territorial wins in the short-term, and following territorial loss in the long-term. These results suggest that proactive counterinsurgency campaigns are in the interest of civilians in civil war.

Climate projections for the end of the century indicate drier summers and more intense precipitation in the Mediterranean. In this respect, the characterization of rainfall in the region is necessary to understand its future changes.Regional climate models (RCM) are essential tools to understand the regional climate and to project its future evolution. This thesis aims at characterizing and evaluating rainfall simulated by RCM in Southeast France, typical of the mediterranean coastal regions. The description of observed rainfall at the same scales as RCM is a prerequisite.Observed and simulated rainfall is described in terms of values and spatial and temporal structure of occurrence and intensity.Weather types are used to explore the relation between rainfall features and the underlying physical processes. In the RCM, the annual total volume of water precipitated over the study region is closed to the observed values. However, this total volume is not distributed the same in space and time in the RCM simulations and in the observations.Among the multiple facets of the rainfall climatology, this study highlights the influence of the relief and of the solar cycle both in the triggering and in the intensity of rain.Rain appears to occur preferentially in the late afternoon, in connection with the daytime heating of the surface. However, the maximum of rain occurrence simulated by the RCM is earlier than in the observations, suggesting a too quick response of the convection scheme to the diurnal cycle of surface fluxes, in relation to the absence of transition between shallow and deep convection in most schemes.Besides, within the study region, the orographic forcing appears to be quite different for the two ranges of the domain and is much more pronounced over the Cévennes. The RCM reproduce the influence of the topography on rainfall features.Yet, the contrast between plains and mountains is more pronounced in the models than in the observations, especially when the large-scale forcing is weak and the convection is prevailing in the study area. The contrast accentuation between plain and relief in the models seems to be due to a too high sensitivity of the convection schemes to the air mass convergence and instability favored by the relief.

Previous issue date: 2012-12-13 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / The growing concern with the support of the decision-making process has made companies to search technologies that support their decisions. The technology most widely used presently is the Data Warehouse (DW), which allows storing data so it is possible to produce useful and reliable information to assist in strategic decisions. Combining the concepts of Spatial Data Warehouse (SDW), that allows geometry storage and managing, and Temporal Data Warehouse (TDW), which allows storing data changes that occur in the real-world, a research topic known as Spatio-Temporal Data Warehouse (STDW) has emerged. STDW are suitable for the treatment of geometries that change over time. These technologies, combined with the steady growth volume of data, show the necessity of index structures to improve the performance of analytical query processing with spatial predicates and also with geometries that may vary over time. In this sense, this work focused on proposing an index for STDW called Spatio-Temporal Bitmap Index, or STB-index. The proposed index was designed to processing drill-down and roll-up queries considering the existence of predefined spatial hierarchies and with spatial attributes that can vary its position and shape over time. The validation of STB-index was performed by conducting experimental tests using a DWET created from synthetic data. Tests evaluated the elapsed time and the number of disk accesses to construct the index, the amount of storage space of the index and the elapsed time and the number of disk accesses for query processing. Results were compared with query processing using database management system resources and STBindex improved the query performance by 98.12% up to 99.22% in response time compared to materialized views.

Previous issue date: 2016-03-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This Master thesis studies the spatio-temporal variability of soil moisture in the Guaraíra experimental watershed, located on the southern coast of Paraíba. As it is an experimental basin, it is of great importance to know how its variables work and interact together, in order to allow inferences in similar basins. In that case, the soil moisture play a role responsible for several factors in the watershed, like flow generation, drought development and groundwater recharge, for example. Initially, being a small watershed, (5,84 km²) it was believed that its results related to soil moisture should be very homogeneus, however, a hypothesis was made about how the different soil and vegetation cover between each station could make an influence in the results. The research had as its main objective to study the spatio-temporal variability on the soil moisture on the said study area, in order to use these information as subsidy to similar basins, even bigger ones. For this it was used data from the TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) soil moisture probes installed at five stations and pluviographs in the study area combined with manual collection for calibration and validation of the probe’s results since april 2013 until September 2014. This way, it was possible to apply the methods used by Vachaud et al. (1985( and Mittelbach & Seneviratne (2012), with the disconnection of the resilts of soil moisture into its variable and invariable parts on time, which consist in the spatio-temporal variability of soil moisture analysis. As the TDR probes used to measure soil moisture give a temporal resolution of one hour, an analysis of temporal resolution was proceeded, allowing to use diary data in order to represent the soil moisture, without significant variation of results. The results confirmed the homogeneity of spatio-temporal variability of the soil moisture in the basin, except for the station with less vegetation cover, where the spatio-temporal variability of soil moisture differed significantly from the rest of the basin. Thus, it was perceived the similiraty between the results of soil moisture in the terms of temporal mean and anomalies, for the stations with similar vegetation cover. This way, it was concluded that the fact that the results of the
station with less vegetation cover had been so different is due to its lack of vegetation cover, being very different from the rest of the basin, thus enhancing the importance of vegetacion cover as a natural controller of soil moisture. As to the temporal variability, that is more susceptible to climatic effect, like precipitation for example, while the spatial-variability is more related to the invariable terms on time. Yet, the calibration of the probes was successfully executed and they do represent well the soil moisture for that study area, allowing continuous monitoring on that experimental basin.
