Sinfonia is a two movement work for chamber string orchestra and percussion consisting of at least five violins I, five violins II, five violas, five cellos, three string basses, and three percussionists playing timpani, two suspended cymbals, one small crash cymbal, 2 triangles, tambourine, woodblock, five temple blocks, snare, two tom-toms, 2 glockenspiels, xylophone, and chimes. The first movement is approximately nine minutes long, the second lasts five and one third minutes making a total of approximately fourteen minutes and twenty seconds.

In my years as a composer, I’ve had a great fascination with the concept of juxtaposition and superimposition of various moods and styles of music. Although I’d written many pieces before thesis, I had yet to examine the results of this polarization in music. Thus, the purpose of this present composition was to explore contrasting musical elements while combining them in a coherent, competent manner. To begin, I chose two differing instrumentations of which to amalgamate: strings and percussion. música dramática exploits the different timbres and colors of the instruments and presents them by a uniform method. Musical elements of the piece such as style, mood, harmony, melody, rhythm, tempo, register, and dynamics all work together in order to conform to a single composition no matter how jarring the differences may be. Altogether, the various elements of this single movement work for string orchestra and percussion were fused to create a well-balanced, well-proportioned piece of music. The results were spectacular: regardless of the extreme differences in the many factors of music, one coherent composition was formed. This creative project has made a survey of chamber music for bassoon and strings. A representative listing of chamber works for this combination has been included in the work. The listing tells the name of the Composer, his dates, the title of the composition, instrumentation, publisher, and. the composer's nationality.The project has made an analysis of two significant chamber compositions for bassoon and strings. The works analyzed in this project area: Variations on an Ancient Melody, and Karl Almenrader, and Quartet in C Major Opus 73 No. 1, Francois Devienne.In addition to a survey of chamber music for bassoon and strings, the project has male a comparison to other wind-string combinations.The final part has made an analysis of the preparation and performance aspects of the Gordon Jacob Suits for Bassoon and String Quartet. / School of Music

This work for harp and string orchestra uses musical materials derived from a chord taken from the lydian mode. The three major formal divisions are A, B, and A'. The A and A' sections are more homophonic in texture and slower in harmonic rhythm. The B section is mostly contrapuntal. Sections A and A' are dreamy and dance-like while the B section is turbulent and unrestful. These characteristics are represented by sustained sonorities, twoagainst- three rhythmic configurations, and lilting melodic materials in sections A and A', as opposed to the fragmented, ever-changing melodic material of the B section. The interweaving of the musical materials into a consummate form represents the conversations, personalities, and exploits of these Atmosphantoms, giving the music its philosophical and conversational character.
