Great expectations : the relations between expectancies for success and academic achievementMoore, Caryl 04 1900 (has links)
The main aims of this broad exploratory study were (a) to gain insights as to the
possible interrelations between Unisa students' expectations for success and a
variety of significant variables (such as their academic performance, self-perceptions,
confidence, motivation, self-determination, others' expectancies, locus of control and
attributions relating to previous performance), and (b) to discover possible
differences relating to various groups (i.e. racial and gender groups; 'pass' and 'fail'
groups; and 'realistic' and 'unrealistic' groups).
The results of 61 hypotheses are compared with a variety of theoretical
suggestions and past findings. It was found that, on the whole, the various groups,
inter alia, expected to succeed, were confident about the accuracy of their
expectations, perceived themselves to work hard, considered themselves to have
considerable ability and to be above class average. Despite this rosy outlook many
students failed the examinations. Two of the most striking findings of this study were
that (a) those who failed overestimated their future performance to a significantly
greater extent than those who passed, and (b) overestimations were negatively
correlated with achievement. In contrast to theory and numerous research findings,
the psychological profiles of 'overoptimists', 'realists', and 'underestimators' revealed
that overoptimistic expectancies and self-perceptions appear to be maladaptive in an
academic context. Indeed, the findings suggest that accurate or even underoptimistic
self-assessments may be more conducive to academic success. It is proposed that
overoptimism may reflect ignorance of standards required, of adequate study
methods, or may result in inappropriate preparation. In light of the findings, the
implications and possible benefits and dangers of overoptimistic expectations and
self-perceptions are discussed.
The subjects are 715 third year Unisa psychology students, who are more
heterogeneous than most other university students as they not only vary

A psycho-educational intervention program to enhance the mental toughness of secondary school cricket playersGriffith, William Charles 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of a psycho-educational intervention program on the mental toughness of secondary school cricketers. The general aim of the study was to use psychological skills and psychological techniques to enhance the mental toughness of secondary school cricketers, within a psycho-educational framework. This general aim of the study was actualised by employing the following specific aims:
• A literature review was conducted to explore the psycho-educational model. It was found that the psycho-educational model was an appropriate model to use as the framework of the intervention program.
• The literature review investigated and evaluated different psychological skills and psychological techniques that influenced the mental toughness of cricketers positively.
• A questionnaire was designed. This questionnaire (CMTQ) fulfilled the role of a psychological skills measuring tool.
• A psycho-educational intervention program was designed around the findings of the literature study.
• Guidelines were compiled to follow when coaching mental toughness to secondary school cricketers.
• The intervention program was presented over a six week period.
• An empirical study was conducted to evaluate the successfulness of the intervention program.
The first phase of the empirical study was done before the presentation of the psycho-educational intervention program. The data suggest that Confidence and Motivation were the two main psychological skills that the participants employed in their mental game of cricket. The second phase of the empirical study was only done after the completion of the six week intervention program. The selected data analysis method employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the program was the t-test for dependant groups.

The results of the data analysis indicated that the participants in the experimental group improved in their mental toughness performance significantly. When the findings of the literature review and the results of the empirical study are combined, it appears as if this intervention program will have a positive influence on the cricket performance of secondary school cricketers. / Psychology of Education / D. Perceptions of sexual harassment amongst university students : a case study of the South African Military AcademyDaniels, Peter Isaac January 2002 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Tertiary institutions worldwide as well as locally have investigated sexual harassment on
their campuses. This was done partly because of the negative consequences of sexual
harassment on students and staff, particularly their work performance. Incidents of sexual
harassment reported at universities range from rape and sexual assault to threats and
sexist remarks by lecturers. When researching this phenomenon, difficulty is normally
encountered partly due to the uncertainty that surrounds this activity. This is because
perceptions differ as to what kind of conduct constitutes sexual harassment. Research
further indicates that there are gender and racial differences in the assessment of sexual
harassment. The current study investigates the uncertainty, gender and racial differences
that exist regarding sexual harassment at a specific university campus. By means of a
survey the perceptions of students regarding these three issues were determined at the
Faculty of Military Science, a satellite campus of the University of Stellenbosch. With the
utilisation of statistlcal packages, frequencies and statistical differences amongst the
various sub-groups at the campus were determined. This was done in order to compare
these findings with those of other universities who conducted similar sexual harassment
surveys on their campuses in South Africa. It was found that no clear idea of what
constitutes sexual harassment exist amongst these students. In particular women in the
survey consistently viewed more incidents as contributing to sexual harassment than men.
As oppose to other findings, Blacks registered a more conservative attitude when
assessing whether certain incidents can be viewed as sexual harassment. The above was
found notwithstanding the differing social context, especially the socialisation process and
the fairly rigid codes of conduct, that students at the Military Academy are exposed to. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Verskeie tersiêre instellings, wêreldwyd sowel as plaaslik, het seksuele teistering op hul
kampusse ondersoek. Dit was deels gedoen as gevolg van die negatiewe gevolge wat
hierdie aktiwiteit op studente en personeellede het, veralop hul werksprestasie.
Gerapporteerde insidente by universiteite wissel vanaf verkragting en seksuele aanvalle tot
dreigemente en seksistiese opmerkings deur dosente. Probleme is ondervind tydens
navorsing oor die verskynsel wat deels toegeskryf kan word aan die onsekerheid wat
hierdie aktiwiteit omhul. Dit hou verband met persepsies wat verskil ten opsigte van die
soort gedrag wat seksuele teistering teenwoordig. Navorsing wys verder daarop dat
geslags- en rasverskille bestaan by die assesering van seksuele teistering. Die huidige
studie ondersoek die onsekerheid, geslags- en rasverskille ten opsigte van seksuele
teistering by 'n spesifieke universiteitskampus. Deur middel van 'n opname word die
persepsies van studente rakende die drie kwessies bepaal by die Fakulteit Krygskunde, 'n
satelietkampus van die Universiteit van Stellenbosch. Met behulp van statistiese pakkette,
word frekwensies en statistiese verskille tussen die verskillende subgroepe op die kampus
bepaal. Dit was gedoen ten einde in staat te wees om die bevindinge te vergelyk met die
van ander Suid-Afrikaanse universiteite wat seksuele teistering opnames op hul kampusse
gedoen het. Daar word bevind dat geen duidelike idee van wat seksuele teistering behels
bestaan onder die studente nie. In besonder word bevind dat vroue in die opname
deurlopend meer insidente aanslaan as seksuele teistering, as mans. In teenstelling met
ander bevindinge, registreer swart persone 'n meer konserwatiewe houding wanneer
bepaal word of sekere insidente seksueel teisterend van aard is, al dan nie. Bogenoemde
was bevind desondanks die eiesoortige sosiale konteks waarin studente hulself bevind,
veral die sosialiseringsproses en die redelike streng gedragskodes, waaraan studente van
die Militêre Akademie onderwerp word.

Learners' aggressive behaviour in secondary school: a psycho-social perspectiveGasa, Velisiwe Goldencia 30 June 2005 (has links)
This study was undertaken to determine the extent of aggressive behaviour exhibited by secondary school learners.
Many factors were considered when investigating the problem of aggressive behaviour. The problem was traced from the theorists' perspectives and factors related to the family, school and community. An extensive literature review showed that the above factors contribute to aggressive behaviour among adolescents.
In order to support or reject the findings of the literature study, quantitative (questionnaire) research and qualitative research (interviews) were conducted. The results of the quantitative research concerning learners' aggressive behaviour in secondary schools were analysed and interpreted while at the same time a deeper understanding of aggressive behaviour was revealed through qualitative research.
The results of the empirical research indicated that the more negative the family climate, school climate, community climate or influence of friends are, or the more negative the emotional self-concept of the adolescent is, the more aggressive the adolescent is, and vice versa. Based on these findings recommendations for the implementation of prevention programmes were made. / Educational Studies / D. Ed. (Socio-Education)
