White Teachers' Racial Identities, Perceptions of Student' Behaviors, and Symptoms of Burnout

Chen, Cynthia Elaine January 2013 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Janet E. Helms / Educational research has examined factors contributing to teachers' burnout symptoms, including their perceptions of student behaviors (Ingersoll, 2003). Interestingly, teacher and students' races have been differentially related to teachers' perceptions of student behavior (Downey and Pribesh, 2004); this disparity in perceptions has been associated with teachers making more negative recommendations for African American students than for White students (Tenenbaum and Ruck, 2007). However, racial categories are not psychological constructs and offer little room for designing interventions to restructure teachers' perceptions of student behavior as a strategy to prevent teacher burnout. Since most teachers are White, using Helms's (1995) White racial identity model could offer a conceptual framework for examining different perspectives by which teachers understand their students' racial dynamics, which in turn, might affect how teachers feel, think, and act. Thus, if teachers' racial identity relates to their burnout symptoms, perceptions of student behavior, and recommendations, educational researchers could investigate more effective means of preventing teacher burnout symptoms and affect teachers' reactions to racially diverse students. White teachers (N = 237) completed an on-line survey containing an abbreviated White Racial Identity Attitudes Scale (Helms, 2011), behavior subscales of the Conners' Comprehensive Behavior Rating Scale - Teacher Form (Conners, 2008), Maslach Burnout Inventory - Educators' Survey (Maslach, Jackson, and Leiter, 1996), two teacher recommendations measures, and a demographic questionnaire. Results from Multivariate Analyses of Covariance suggested that teachers did not react differently to students' ethnic names or pictures with respect to their perceptions of students' behavior or teachers' likelihood of using specific recommendations. However, canonical correlations suggested that teachers' levels of burnout symptoms were related to their perceptions of students' Defiant Aggressive and Conduct Disorder symptoms. Moreover, teachers' biased and confused racial identity perspectives were strongly positively related to teachers' (a) burnout symptoms; (b) perceptions of angry, argumentative, and defiant behaviors; and (c) likelihood of using negative behavior management strategies with their students. Discussion included recommendations for educational training programs, methodological limitations, and implications of the results. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2013. / Submitted to: Boston College. The impact of meditation as a cognitive-behavioral practice for alternative high school students

Wisner, Betsy L., 1955- 15 October 2012 (has links)
The number of students dropping out of school is reaching crisis proportions. Compensatory alternative high schools are successful intervention programs for dropout prevention and school social workers offer services in these schools to support students at-risk of dropping out of school. The potential benefits of meditation as an intervention for this population have not been studied and this study explores the potential benefits of mindfulness meditation as a cognitive-behavioral strategy to help alternative high school students improve social and behavioral functioning. Participants were 35 alternative high school students in Grades 10 through 12 (N = 35; 19 boys and 16 girls). The research design in this study used both quantitative and qualitative methodology. Concept Mapping, a mixed-method approach, developed by Trochim (1989) allowed quantitative statistical analysis of qualitative data. In addition, teacher ratings and narrative qualitative data were also collected and analyzed. Concept Mapping yielded eight clusters reflecting the conceptual domain of student perceptions of the changes from the mindfulness meditation intervention: Improved Stress Management, Enhanced Self-Awareness, Enhanced Emotional Coping, Enhanced Ability to Pay Attention, Improved State of Mind, More Time Spent Being Calm, Improved School Climate, and Enhanced Student Engagement. Particularly important for students was the potential for meditation to relieve stress and to improve school climate. Students may value certain meditation benefits over others based on gender, age, or grade. Student behavioral and emotional strengths showed a statistically significant increase following the intervention as evidenced by teacher ratings on the Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale (BERS-2)/Teacher Rating Scale. The mean for the Pre-Intervention ratings of students (M = 90.03, SD = 11.42) was lower than the mean Post-Intervention ratings of students (M = 100.60, SD = 13.28), t(27) = -3.97, p < .001. Qualitative analysis yielded two overarching themes: the benefits and the challenges of mindfulness meditation for students. Meditation is a cognitive-behavioral intervention that allows vulnerable students to enhance psychosocial, cognitive, and behavioral strengths. / text

Construção coletiva do conhecimento : forma de atuação dos sujeitos em ambientes digitais/virtuais de aprendizagem

Lima, Maria de Fatima Webber do Prado January 2003 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to contribute in the identification how students and teachers act in order to construct of the knowledge in digital/virtual distance learning environments. The identification will supply subsidies for the construction of educational environment whose priority is to develop the students' cognitive structures through groupware. For reaching this goal, the work is based on Vygotsky and Freinet's theories and group theory and on the study of available computational tools. The methodology of this work uses the qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative analysis has came from two cases: a lecture of the Graduate Course Computer Science for Educators (UFRGS) and a lecture of a Network Management Course. Both have allowed to analise now the agents (students and teachers) act in this environment. The quantitative method was a complement of the qualitative one, in order to provide a global view of analysis. By the cases we have noted the agents' behavior of a virtual/digital learning environment and the agents' behavior of a "classical" learning environment are alike: the teachers' empiricist conduct and passive students without autonomy. In a hand from the five initial hypothesis of the work, only two had been proven: (1) in a long-distance environment the communication goes from a 1:1 form to N:N one; (2) Computer-aided educational environments are not ready to provide support for groupware according a social-cognitive perspective. On the other hand, three hypothesis had not been proven: (1) students' participation evolute from a passive participation to a critical participation; (2) teacher's intervention evolute from a intensive support to a soft support, and (3) the students acquire autonomy and learning to work in a colaborative way.
