How Nudging Inspires Sustainable Behavior among Event Attendees: A Qualitative Analysis of Selected Music Festivals

Bär, Sören, Korrmann, Laura, Kurscheidt, Markus 08 August 2023 (has links)
This research answers the question of which nudges can be created to subtly influence event attendees in such a way that they contribute to the implementation of a green event. Using the qualitative content analysis according to Mayring, three music festivals were analyzed in detail with regard to their measures for ecological sustainability. All available online resources—in particular, the websites of the music festivals, blog entries, online newspaper articles and, also, observations during several personal visits—were used as sources of the qualitative data. A key result was the development of a model for nudges that can generally be used and implemented for events. The goals, the nudges developed and the possible measures with regard to ecological sustainability are defined in the areas of transport, garbage, electricity, gastronomy, sanitation and compensation of emissions. The more music festival participants already behave in an ecologically sustainable manner, the more others will join them. This can be exploited by using social nudges that consciously inspire group social dynamics. In order to be able to use nudging sensibly, organizers have to internalize that they act as decision-makers, which entails a great ethical and moral responsibility. Even inconspicuous nudges can be very effective.

How far are you willing to go when the prices are so low? : A mixed-method study on how ultra-fast ecommerce marketing strategies affect consumers sustainability beliefs.

Holma, Matilda, Junestrand, Alva January 2024 (has links)
The surge in online shopping, catalyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic, has reshaped consumerbehavior worldwide. Ecommerce platforms account for a substantial portion of retailtransactions, and as the digital marketplace continues to expand, the allure of ultra-fastecommerce platforms such as Shein, Temu, and AliExpress grows exponentially. Theseplatforms offer an extensive array of products at unprecedented response to immediate trendsand affordability, leveraging aggressive marketing strategies to capture consumer attention. However, the convergence of ultra-fast ecommerce raises concerns about environmentaldegradation, unethical production practices, and labor exploitation. Brands operating withinthis business practice often prioritize profit margins over sustainability, perpetuating a throw-away culture that undermines efforts towards ethical consumption. The environmental andsocial implications of this rapid consumption trend remain underexplored, and what this mixed-method study aims to investigate is the intricate relationship between ultra-fast ecommercemarketing tactics and consumer sustainability beliefs, focusing on Swedish consumers. Afterextensive literature review and empirical research involving a survey of 122 consumers and 6follow-up interviews, this study examines the multifaceted influences of ultra-fast ecommercemarketing on Swedish consumers' shopping behaviors and sustainability attitudes. Ourinvestigation focuses on the complex interplay between price consciousness, impulsiveness, trend seeking and opinion seeking behavior, and the persuasive power of marketing tacticsemployed by ultra-fast ecommerce platforms. Our findings suggest that while Swedishconsumers express a strong commitment to sustainability in principle, the attraction of lowprices often eclipses environmental and social considerations when making purchasingdecisions on ultra-fast ecommerce platforms. Marketing strategies such as paid advertising, influencers, UGC, and aggressive discounts play a pivotal role in driving opinion seeking, impulsive and compulsive buying behaviors among consumers. Empirical findings reveal a lackof consumer awareness regarding the environmental and ethical consequences of ultra-fastecommerce purchases, and skepticism toward sustainability claims made by low-pricecompanies. However, consumers demonstrate high trust in influencers, who play a significantrole in shaping purchasing decisions, particularly regarding ultra-fast ecommerce. By shedding light on how ultra-fast ecommerce marketing strategies affect consumer behavior, this research contributes to academic scholarship and offers a range of practical implications. We offer a deeper insight into how consumers make choices and suggest ways to encouragepro-sustainable shopping habits in the ecommerce marketplace. Ultimately, this studyunderscores the urgent need for more studies focusing on regulatory frameworks, industrystandards, consumer education initiatives together with tailored marketing strategies that alignwith consumer values and how to promote ethical consumption practices to reduce the negativeimpact of ultra-fast ecommerce on the environment and on ethical aspects. By empoweringconsumers with knowledge and promoting ethical alternatives, we can encourage moreconscious and responsible purchasing decisions, ultimately contributing to a more sustainableand equitable digital marketplace.

In pursuit of a greener municipality : A qualitative study on the municipality of Borås work with climate change on it’s units.

Rydholm Allard, Mattias, Insgård, Erik January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines how a Swedish municipality can work with climate change to reduce its ecological footprint and negative effects on the environment. Environmental issues are something that every municipality encounters daily to forward the work on sustainable development. Two research questions were formulated that would determine the factors that employees in a Swedish municipality experience increases environmental awareness and usage of electrical bikes as work vehicles. Three different home care service units in Borås municipality has been examined based on a qualitative approach together with a literature study. By focusing on an infrastructure that encourage e-bike usage, provide education on ebikes and creating campaigns that increases the availability of e-bikes, municipalities can create a cultural change in the selection of vehicles. Environmental education, environmental management systems and e-bikes are working ways of climate compensation, with different preferences from person to person, depending on previous knowledge and experience. The three types of climate compensation alternatives are perceived as different ways to help people act more sustainable. For example, through better resource management, education in eco-driving and lesser CO2-emissions per trip by changing vehicle.

Consideration of value chain actors in the analysis of environmental performance for eco-design and incentive for sustainable behavior : case study of energy-using products road transport refrigeration units

Heslouin, Charlotte 11 December 2017 (has links)
To implement ecodesign strategies, it is necessary to evaluate the environmental performance. The use of Environmental Performance Indicators (EPI) is a good way to achieve this. These EPI, to be effective, must be adapted to the various value chain actors, internal and external to the company, susceptible to be involved in the improvement of the environmental performance. These different actors have different needs regarding information (details, type of information) and these needs may be contradictory. In this work, we propose a method for selecting EPI that take into account the value chain actors and their needs. Once the EPI have been defined, they must be able to assess the situation, define ecodesign strategies and monitor the evolution of environmental performance. For some energy-using products, the usage scenario can significantly vary the environmental performance. A focus is thus put on the development of sustainable behavior strategies. It is necessary that the strategies put in place allow customers/users to reduce their environmental impact and that the company takes a competitive advantage while improving the environmental performance of its products. In this study, this is reflected in: 1) the adaptation of existing ecodesign tools for the integration of value chain actors; 2) the definition of a method of personalized diagnosis of the use of products. These methods have been applied and validated by the case study of road transport refrigeration units.

Hinderot-Flogin, Tindra January 2023 (has links)
The project has explored how product design can contribute to sustainable development by providing an alternative to cigarette butt littering and instead encouraging correct waste disposal . The study is based on the design theories sustainable development, design for sustainable behavior and nudging. Using qualitative context exploration methods such as probes and observation, data has been collected and analyzed. The study presents a self-selected approach based on theory to best answer the research question. As a result, an idea generation process has been designed and a brainstorming, morphological chart and modboard was carried out. Under the framework of sustainability, the concept of sustainable behavior emerges, covering, in addition to CPE, new psychological dimensions such as: the future time perspective (PTF) and the ecological worldviews (VEM). The current study intended to explore the concept of sustainable behavior of university students, by means of the association among some of its dimensions: CPE, PTF and VEM. For this purpose, 380 undergraduate students of biology, ecology, nursing, geography, and social service answered a form containing: socio-demographic questionnaire, a question on self-assessment of environmental care, the Scale of Ecocentric and Anthropocentric Environmentalisms, the Scale Consideration of Future Consequences, and the Scale Ecological Worldviews. Based on descriptive and correlational procedures, it was found that 78% of the participants practice or have practiced environmental care (caregivers) and the spread of information has been the practice more frequently reported, and the source of influence for such practices were the school, social networks, and the contact with nature It was also observed the association between practice of environmental care and ecocentric environmentalism, consideration of future consequences and egalitarian worldview (worldview of fragile nature). The lack of environmental care was associated with anthropocentric environmentalism, apathy, and individualistic worldview (worldview of passivity). As expected, and suggested by the literature, positive association were found between the sustainable behavior dimensions investigated in this study and the practice of environmental care / O compromisso pr?-ecol?gico (CPE) se constitui como t?pico importante no ?mbito dos estudos pessoa-ambiente, sendo entendido como uma postura frente ?s quest?es ambientais que predisp?e pr?ticas que resultam na prote??o do meio ambiente.

Application of persuasive systems design for adopting green information systems and technologies

Shevchuk, N. (Nataliya) 04 October 2019 (has links)
Abstract Critical environmental situation requires academics and practitioners of various disciplines join efforts at planning sustainable development of the society. In information systems research, Green Information Systems and Technologies domain is the one that directly contributes to strengthening environmental values of individuals, communities, and organizations. Abundance of technology influences people most of the time. Although this influence is not always positive, research on persuasive technologies and behavior change support systems searches for the beneficial ways to utilize the impact of information systems on the daily activities of individuals. Ability to assist with encouraging certain behaviors is a defining characteristic of many contemporary systems and devices. Building on the knowledge obtained from the health domain, this dissertation investigates using persuasive technologies for fostering pro-environmental behavior change. Theoretical frameworks of the articles included in the dissertation are based primarily on the Persuasive Systems Design (PSD) model, accompanied by the other prominent socio-psychological theories commonly utilized in information systems research. This dissertation focuses on finding out how to encourage people to adopt and continue using mobile applications designed to assist with acquiring sustainable habits and behaviors. The dissertation is composed of the historical analysis, systematic literature review, and four experimental studies that explore different aspects of persuasive Green IS/IT. Besides analyzing existing research using PSD model as a tool for evaluation, new empirical studies provide fresh insights on Green IS/IT designed for behavior change. Addressed topics include technology adoption and continuance intention, perceived persuasiveness, self-disclosure and risk, endogenous motivations, gamification, and cognitive absorption. Conducted statistical analyses investigate relationships among PSD constructs and other related concepts to discover factors that can convince people initiate and continue using Green IS/IT to develop or maintain environmentally sound practices. Overall, the results reveal a high potential of the PSD model to become a vehicle for enhancement of the existing Green IS/IT. The dissertation provides implications for both academics and practitioners as well as suggestions for the future evolvement of persuasive Green IS/IT research.

Agera hållbart : Hur en påverkar vuxna gamers konsumentbeteenden genom design / Act sustainable : How to affect adult gamers consumer behaviors through design

Pennerup Nilsson, Alexander January 2021 (has links)
This study examines how design can promote positive behavioral change for adult gamers, focusing on sustainable behaviors. Gaming is the fastest growing segment within the entertainment industry and the growth is contributing to a raised number of accessories gamers consume. Electronic waste is a growing concern where the user doesn’t see themselves as a part of the problem, but at the same time pressure the manufacturers to act sustainable. A design process shows how motivation from norms and social pressure can facilitate interactions that shapes the user behavior in a positive way. By identifying an unwillingness to change from both the manufacturers and consumers of gaming accessories, the study shows that it is not enough to develop sustainable alternatives if one aims to facilitate a sustainable behavior. From the design process the study creates a design proposal, Kolla klockan, that exemplifies how a designer can work with sustainable development from the use of behavioral change as a tool to do so, instead of the more traditional methods more commonly promoted within the field of design.

Framtidens e-handel och hur den kan förbättras / The future of online shopping and how it can improve

Persson, Henrik January 2023 (has links)
Online shopping is a problem for the environment that continuously gets worse and opens up for other areas of problems. The largest growing problem is the simple process in order to shop online. This leads to other problems, such as underpacking. The purpose of this study is to explore future solutions in order to reduce online shopping by making it more difficult to order and reduce the underpacking that occurs.    The project has revolved around Ceschin and Gaziulusoy´s (2016) study regarding design for sustainable behavior in order to build an understanding how to make an impact on the individual to make a change regarding online shopping. This was then used in a speculative design process that started in a deep literature study that was used to find design openings.   This study was then developed further into four scenarios that were put up against each other in a polarity mapping in order to find the problems within each scenario. The scenarios were then used in a generative idea generation workshop in order to see how different users would act in order to find a solution for each scenario.    The result of this was an interesting case where the most interesting scenario was reusable packaging. This was seen as the most interesting and best suited for the future due to it minimizing production of new packaging. The ideas were continued in a sketching process that resulted in a concept of a new packaging.
