A Hammerstein-bilinear approach with application to heating ventilation and air conditioning systemsZajic, I. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis considers the development of a Hammerstein-bilinear approach to non-linear systems modelling, analysis and control systems design, which builds on and extends the applicability of an existing bilinear approach. The underlying idea of the Hammerstein-bilinear approach is to use the Hammerstein-bilinear system models to capture various physical phenomena of interest and subsequently use these for model based control system designs with the premise being that of achieving enhanced control performance. The advantage of the Hammerstein-bilinear approach is that the well-structured system models allow techniques that have been originally developed for linear systems to be extended and applied, while retaining moderate complexity of the corresponding system identification schemes and nonlinear model based control designs. In recognition of the need to be able to identify the Hammerstein-bilinear models a unified suite of algorithms, being the extensions to the simplified refined instrumental variable method for parameter estimation of linear transfer function models is proposed. These algorithms are able to operate in both the continuous-time and discrete-time domains to reflect the requirements of the intended purposes of the identified models with the emphasis being placed on straightforward applicability of the developed algorithms and recognising the need to be able to operate under realistic practical system identification scenarios. Moreover, the proposed algorithms are also applicable to parameter estimation of Hammerstein and bilinear models, which are special cases of the wider Hammerstein-bilinear model class. The Hammerstein-bilinear approach has been applied to an industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, which has also been the underlying application addressed in this thesis. A unique set of dynamic control design purpose oriented air temperature and humidity Hammerstein-bilinear models of an environmentally controlled clear room manufacturing zone has been identified. The greater insights afforded by the knowledge of the system nonlinearities then allow for enhanced control tuning of the associated commercial HVAC control system leading to an improved overall control performance.

Dans cette thèse, nous étudions la robustesse dans le contexte de la modélisation de systèmes complexes par les automates cellulaires. En effet, si l'on cherche à reproduire un comportement émergent à partir d'un modèle d'automate cellulaire, il nous semble nécessaire de se demander si les comportements observés sont bien le résultat d'interactions entre entités constituantes, ou bien s'ils dépendent d'une définition particulière du modèle. Nous allons ainsi être amenés à considérer la robustesse du modèle, à savoir la résistance de son comportement à de petites variations sur les attributs de sa définition. Dans un premier temps, nous montrons la pertinence de cette approche en considérant plusieurs définitions possibles d'une perturbation de la mise à jour globale et en les appliquant à une classe simple et représentative de modèles d'automates cellulaires, les Automates Cellulaires Elémentaires. Nous observons que, malgré le fait que nos perturbations soient proches et qu'une majorité des modèles considérés ne change pas de comportement, quelques cas particuliers montrent des changements qualitatifs du comportement que nous étudions plus en détail. Dans un second temps, nous appliquons cette approche en nous penchant sur un modèle particulier d'automate cellulaire, qui simule le phénomène de formation d'essaim à partir d'un modèle évolué d'automate cellulaire, le gaz sur réseau. Nous explorons la robustesse du comportement du modèle en considérant la perturbation de deux attributs du modèle, la forme de la grille cellulaire et la mise à jour globale, et en tirons les conclusions sur la relation entre l'observation du comportement et la définition précise du modèle / In this thesis, we study the role of robustness in the context of the modelling of complex systems by cellular automata. Indeed, if we consider a cellular automaton which aims at reproducing an emergent behaviour from a similar structure, we want to determine whether its observed dynamics are the result of the interaction of entities, or whether it depends a precise definition of the model. We thus consider the model's robustness, that is, the resistance of the behaviour to small perturbations on the model features. First, we show the relevance of this approach by considering several definitions of a perturbation of the global updating and by applying them to a simple and representative class of cellular automata, the Elementary Cellular Automata. We observe that, despite the fact that most models show little or no change between the different perturbations, some particular cases show qualitative changes that we study in detail. Second, we apply this approach to a particular model of cellular automata, which simulates a swarming behaviour based on a lattice-gas model. We then explore the model robustness by considering the pertubations of two of the model's attributes, the lattice shape and the global updating, and discuss the relationship between the observation of the behaviour and the precise definitions of the model

L'île de La Réunion, inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO pour la beauté de ses paysages et pour sa biodiversité exceptionnelle, va accueillir dans les prochaines années une population de plus en plus importante. Les documents de planification réglementant l'évolution de l'urbanisation dans l'île doivent donc en tenir compte afin de gérer au mieux l'évolution et la structuration du foncier local. Dans un contexte de recherche pluridisciplinaire, l'enjeu de nos travaux est donc de proposer des méthodes et outils facilitant les interactions entre les informaticiens et les thématiciens qui apportent leur expertise à la construction de modèles de simulation dédiés à la prospective territoriale et de faire en sorte que ces modèles puissent fournir des pistes de réflexions aux décideurs confrontés aux choix de demain afin d'aider à mettre en place une organisation des territoires qui soit la plus cohérente possible. Après avoir participé à la réalisation de DS, un modèle qui permet de simuler conjointement l'évolution de la population et celle du Mode d'Occupation des Sols à La Réunion, nous nous sommes focalisés sur l'étude de l'émergence, une notion qui apparaît dans nos simulations en environnement spatialisé, mais pour laquelle il n'existe pas d'outils génériques permettant de la manipuler. Nous l'avons définie comme étant une méta-connaissance, ce qui nous a permis de proposer une méthodologie de conception de simulations et un cadre formel qui ont abouti à la mise en place de structures émergentes dans la plateforme de simulation GEAMAS-NG. Celle-ci, ou les entités de la SOA elles-mêmes, peuvent ainsi prendre conscience de l'émergence de phénomènes et les matérialiser en ayant recours à la connaissance des thématiciens. Nous avons alors montré l'intérêt de ces propositions en expérimentant la réification de phénomènes émergents observés dans DS. / Reunion Island will be hosting in the coming years an increasingly important population. Documents dedicated to land-use planning should take this into account to better manage the evolutions of the island. In the context of multidisciplinary research, the challenge of our work is to propose methods and tools to facilitate interactions between computer scientists and thematicians who bring their expertise to the construction of simulation models dedicated to territorial prospective. We co-constructed DS, an agent-based model that simulates the evolutions of the population and of the land-use on the island, and then we focused on the study of emergence, a concept that appears in our simulations in spatial environment. We defined it as a meta-knowledge; and that enabled us to propose a modelling methodology and a formal framework that lead to the introduction of emerging structures in the Agent-Based Simulation platform GEAMAS-NG. The systems, or the entities of the models themselves, can now be aware of the emergence of phenomena and can materialize these phenomena by using the knowledge of thematicians. We finally demonstrated the usefulness of these proposals by experimenting the reification of an emergent phenomenon observed in DS.

An evaluation of the effectiveness of differing levels of extension assistance in improving the adoption and management of small-scale forestry in Leyte Island, the PhilippinesJohn Baynes Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis presents an evaluation of the effectiveness of an agroforestry extension program to smallholder farmers on Leyte Island, the Philippines. The imperative for reforestation is well recognised in the Philippines and was the impetus for this program which provided farmers with assistance to establish and silviculturally manage timber trees on their land. Because the cost-effectiveness of agroforestry extension is increased if farmers develop self-efficacy without extensive training, the extension program was offered in two regimes to test the necessity for extended assistance. In the extended assistance regime, farmers were offered on-site assistance to collect seed, grow seedlings, prepare sites and establish trees, whereas in the limited assistance regime, farmers were only offered assistance to collect seed and grow seedlings. Descriptive statistics were collected of farmers’ acceptance of technology and the manner in which technology was adapted to suit their personal circumstances. Translated conversations between farmers and extension staff also provided a rich source of data which provided insights into farmers’ motivation. Extension activities were reviewed at a mid-program workshop, a final on-site inspection and an end-of-program workshop. Farmers responded positively to the extended assistance program which helped them to grow and out-plant seedlings. The limited assistance program was relatively unsuccessful. Overall, the extension program was successful in shifting the initiative for further planting from extension staff to participating farmers. However, farmers showed little interest in applying silvicultural thinning or pruning to existing plantations of trees because extension advice was not congruent with their existing mental models of these procedures. Systems modelling of socio-economic variables which had been found to affect program outcomes was used to predict critical success factors. A key constraint to program recruitment was found to be farmers’ perception of harvest security, even when their needs for technology and planting materials are met. Modelling also cast doubt on the usefulness of written extension materials and emphasised the necessity for extended face-to-face technical assistance. Although conducted in Leyte, the findings of this research provide guidance for issues which affect the adoption of agroforestry both in the Philippines and in other countries. The research found that it was possible to recruit and motivate farmers without providing material incentives. If farmers experienced unexpected problems, providing extended face-to-face contact and assistance was critical if catastrophic losses of participating farmers were to be avoided. The failure of attempts to introduce advanced-age silviculture also indicated a need to elicit farmers’ mental models as a precursor or parallel enquiry to extension activities. In a situation where little was initially known about farmers’ understanding of agroforestry technology or the variables which affect their acceptance or rejection of extension assistance, the results of this research have shown that it is possible to build the capacity of farmers to establish timber trees. This result is in contrast to the acknowledged failure of the logging concession system in the Philippines and the difficulties faced by some industrial plantations and community-based programs. This investigation has shown that an opportunity exists to lift the level of tree planting in Leyte, provided that system variables which are either critical success factors or impediments are addressed.

Optimisation and operation of residential micro combined heat and power (μCHP) systemsShaneb, Omar Ali January 2012 (has links)
In response to growing concerns regarding global warming and climate change, reduction of CO2 emissions becomes a priority for many countries, especially the developed ones such as the UK. Residential applications are considered among the most important areas for substantial reduction of CO2 emissions because they represent a major part of the total consumed energy in those countries. For instance, in the UK, residential applications are currently accountable for about 150 Mt CO2 emissions, which represents approximately 25% of the whole CO2 emissions [1-2]. In order to achieve a significant CO2 reduction, many strategies must be adopted in the policy of these countries. One of these strategies is to introduce micro combined heat and power (μCHP) systems into residential energy systems, since they offer several advantages over traditional systems. A significant amount of research has been carried out in this field; however, in terms of integrating such systems into residential energy systems, significant work is yet to be conducted. This is because of the complexity of these systems and their interdependency on many uncertain variables, energy demand of a house is a case in point. In order to achieve such integration, this research focuses on the optimisation and operation of μCHP systems in residential energy systems as essential steps towards integration of these systems, so it deals with the optimisation and operation of a μCHP system within a building taking into account that the system is grid-connected in order to export or import electricity in certain cases. A comprehensive review that summarises key points that outline the trend of previous research in this field has been carried out. The reviewed areas include: technologies used as residential μCHP units, modelling of the μCHP systems, sizing of μCHP systems and operation strategies used for such systems. To further this, a generic model for sizing of μCHP system’s components to meet different residential application has been developed by the author. Two different online operation strategies of residential μCHP systems, namely: an online linear programming optimiser (LPO) and a real time fuzzy logic operation strategy (FLOS) have been developed. The performance of the novel online operation strategies, in terms of their ability to reduce operation costs, has been evaluated. Both the LPO and the FLOS were found to have their advantages when compared with the traditional operation strategies of μCHP systems in terms of operation costs and CO2 emissions. This research should therefore be useful in informing design and operation decisions during developing and implementing μCHP technologies in residential applications, especially single dwellings.

Evaluating electrolyser setups for hydrogen production from offshore wind power: A case study in the Baltic SeaFranzén, Kenzo January 2023 (has links)
As part of the transition towards a fully sustainable energy system, green hydrogen shows great potential to decarbonise several hard-to-abate sectors. To provide the fossil-free electricity required for electrolysis, offshore wind power has emerged as a suggested option. In this report, four scenarios using different electrolyser placements and technologies are compared and applied in a 30-year case study considering a 1 GW offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. The scenarios are evaluated through the optimisation of electrolyser capacities, full system modelling and simulation, a techno-economic assessment, as well as a literature review of technological readiness, safety aspects and operational considerations. It is shown that a range of installed capacities offers only slight differences in levelised costs and that the optimal sizes to a large part depend on future electrolyser cost developments. A 1:1 sizing ratio between electrolyser capacity and maximum available power is not suggested for any of the studied configurations. Further, the simulations indicate that electrolyser inefficiencies constitute 63.2–68.5% of the total energy losses. Power transmission losses are relatively small due to the short transmission distance, while the power demands of several subsystems are nearly insignificant. Onshore H2 production using an alkaline electrolyser system is highlighted, offering the highest system efficiency and largest hydrogen production, at 55.93% and 2.23 Mton, respectively. This setup is further shown to be the most cost-efficient, offering a levelised cost of hydrogen at 3.15 €/kgH2. However, obstacles in the form of social and environmental concerns and regulations are seemingly larger compared to the scenarios using offshore electrolysis. Further, rapid future cost developments for electrolysers are likely to strengthen the case for offshore and PEM electrolyser configurations. A range of research opportunities are highlighted to fill the identified knowledge gaps and enable further insights. / Como parte de la transicion hacia un sistema energético totalmente sostenible, el hidrógeno verde muestra un gran potencial para descarbonizar varios sectores en los que es difíciles de conseguir. La energía eólica marina ha surgido como una opción para suministrar la electricidad libre de fósiles necesaria para la electrólisis. En este informe se comparan y aplican cuatro escenarios que utilizan diferentes ubicaciones y tecnologías de electrolizadores en un estudio de caso a 30 aoñs que considera un parque eólico marino de 1 GW en el Mar Báltico. Los escenarios se evalúan mediante una optimización de la capacidad de los electrolizadores, la modelización y simulación de todo el sistema, una revisión bibliográfica de la disponibilidad tecnológica, teniendo en cuenta los aspectos de seguridad y las consideraciones operativas. OPTIMIZATION-BASED OPERATION AND CONTROL APPROACHES FOR IMPROVING THE RESILIENCE OF ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMSDakota James Hamilton (17048772) 27 September 2023 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">The safe and reliable delivery of electricity is critical for the functioning of our modern society. However, high-impact, low-probability (HILP) catastrophic events (such as extreme weather caused by climate change, or cyber-physical attacks) pose an ever-growing threat to the power grid. At the same time, modern advancements in computational capabilities, communication infrastructure, and measurement technologies provide opportunities for new operation and control strategies that enhance the resilience of electric power systems to such HILP events. In this work, optimization-based operation and control approaches are proposed to improve resilience in two power systems applications. First, a real-time linearized-trajectory model-predictive controller (LTMPC) is developed for ensuring voltage, frequency, and transient (rotor angle) stability in systems engineered to operate as microgrids. Such microgrids are capable of seamlessly transitioning from grid-connected operation to an islanded mode and thus, enhance system resilience. The proposed LTMPC enables rapid deployment of such systems by reducing engineering costs and development time while maintaining stable operation. On the other hand, some power systems, such as distribution feeders, are not designed to operate as standalone microgrids. For these cases, a method is proposed for forming ad-hoc microgrids from intact sections of the damaged feeder in the aftermath of a HILP event. A feeder operating center-on-a-laptop (FOCAL) is introduced that coordinates the control of possibly hundreds of inverter-interfaced distributed energy resources (e.g., rooftop solar, battery storage) to improve system resilience. Theoretical analysis as well as numerical case studies and simulations of the proposed strategies are presented for both applications.</p>
