"Desirable models of behaviour" : learning to teach as a rite of passage : an historical study of initial teacher education in New Zealand : a dissertation presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Ball, Teresa January 2009 (has links)
This thesis critically examines the historical construction of initial teacher education at the turn of the 20th century. It focuses particularly on the extent of state involvement in the process of learning to teach, arguing that this process fulfils the necessary conditions of a rite of passage. The investigation utilises a different theoretical and methodological approach which combines the post-structuralist analyses of Michel Foucault with the cultural-anthropological work of Arnold van Gennep. Together, they provide a framework which enables an archaeological examination of teacher training at the macro-level of the state and its institutions, whilst providing a complementary, genealogical analysis of student teachers at the micro-level of their everyday lives. The investigation found that, in order to transform colonial society into an enlightened rural democracy, the state needed to transform its teachers. It did this through ensuring neophyte teachers passed through a carefully orchestrated rite of passage within a highly centralised and regulated system of training colleges. This necessitated a shift away from the devolved, differentiated pupil-teacher training system. The study traces this move, examines the state?s rationale, and explores the implications for all three phases of the trainees? rite of passage: separation, transition and incorporation. It also explains how specific „ceremonial rituals? and „sacred knowledge? prescribed what new teachers should know and do in order to become productive, docile and economically useful members of society. The study also emphasises that student teachers became subjects-in-their-own-making within this regime of order. The study then shifts its focus to the present, „re-meeting? history by comparing the ritual practices and specialist knowledge of past rites of passage with those of the present. It challenges teacher educators and teachers to take control of teacher education and suggests ways in which they should take advantage of its location in the university by opening up new political spaces and reasserting the importance of professionalism in action.

Blaszko, Caroline Elizabel 02 October 2014 (has links)
The teaching of science is incipient in the early years, and it is barely explored and worked in the school context due to the lag in teacher training directed to this area of education. A strong demand for the continued education of teachers emerges from this problem. In this context, the educational blog may become an important tool for the continued education of teachers regarding the teaching of science. Thus, the aim of this work was to present the contributions that the educational blog may offer to courses of continued education of teachers and the implementation of science education in the early years of elementary school. Regarding the methodology, we opted for the quantitative and qualitative methodological approach with exploratory nature. The research involved four different stages, in which: at first, a survey of data, by means of questionnaire, occurred with the participation of 25 students, who are studying in the 4thyear of elementary school. In the second stage, we applied a questionnaire to 50 teachers of municipal schools seeking to know the needs and difficulties that these professionals have to mediate the knowledge in the area of Science. On the third stage, facing the investigations conducted with students and teachers, an educational blog was created and a course of continued education articulated with this technological resource was proposed. The data that emerged from the first and second stages of the research were useful as guidance for the preparation of the proposal of an educational blog for the continued education of teachers. The fourth stagecame in handy to verify the effectiveness of the educational blog regarding the teachers who attended the course for continued education in science, in which the proposed training tool was used. The developed product was a manual of guidelines for the creation of a blog, which enables teachers and other interested parties to obtain information to create a blog according to the need. After the approval of teachers, the main results indicate that the use of the educational blog as a resource allied with the continuous training of teachers, contributed to greater effectiveness and greater improvement of teachers.

The present work has as its object of study the cultural investment done by teachers who work concurrently in private and public schools in the state of São Paulo from Bourdieu's sociological perspective, especially from the notions of habitus and cultural capital. The starting point is the hypothesis that good quality teaching is expressed by the high quality cultural capital built by the teacher throughout his life journey when participating in different sociocultural spaces as well as the existence and use of institutional resources that assist and enrich the exercise of their professional practice. The aim of this study is to characterize the cultural investment made by teachers throughout their training process as well as those already acting as professionals in order to provide indicators to shed some light on educational public policies that can strengthen teacher participation in different cultural spaces so as to broaden different knowledge and culture acquisition by these individuals. Sixteen teachers, who had at least three years of professional experience by the time of the interview, participated in the research. All of them completed a questionnaire, which was about academic background, professional activity, leisure and participation in cultural events for the last twelve months. Nine out of the sixteen, for acting concomitantly in public and private schools, gave us semistructured and autobiographical interviews formulated on three guiding macro-axles: i) personal journey; ii) school and academic journey and iii) professional career. Data analysis was performed by using the technique 'Content Analysis', according to Laurence Bardin (1988). We conclude that the search and use of strategies and cultural practices that enable the raising of formal and informal knowledge, i.e. school-related and non-school-related throughout the formative path of the social agent, particularly in this case the subject teacher, culminates ...
