Für einen Datenaustausch ist ein standardisiertes Austauschformat, das auf TEI beruht, dringend erforderlich. Dazu haben sich diese Großprojekte zusammengeschlossen, um einen gemeinsamen Vorschlag zu erarbeiten. In unserem Vortrag möchten wir den aktuellen Stand der Diskussion präsentieren: Was ist der Basistext in der Auszeichnung: hieroglyphische Annotation oder die Umschrift des Textes? Wie geht man mit den verschiedenen Schriftformaten um? Können die Metadatenangaben im Header mithilfe gemeinsamer Thesauri standardisiert werden? Was wird inline, was wird stand-off annotiert?

<p>This thesis explores content design – an area which encompasses the practices and the conceptions of the description, organisation and manipulation of digital content. The overall aim was to identify and examine principles, methods and tools appropriate for content design within the humanities and the social sciences. Another purpose was to investigate the limitations and opportunities of the identified methods and tools by means of modelling and applications of prosopographical materials, designed for research and teaching in history of education.</p><p>The prosopographical collection consists of three different kinds of sources: transcriptions from biographical reference books, written biographical accounts and digitalised archival sources, such as enrolment registers. These resources were encoded according to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) guidelines with the purpose to denote specific structures and semantic features of the content. The thesis demonstrates how the prosopographical collection, stored in a master file in TEI/XML format, was encoded and organised and then further transformed, migrated and manipulated by other tools and to other platforms. This resulted in several examples of applications demonstrating a broad range of uses for research and teaching in history of education and alike.</p><p>One conclusion is that the TEI guidelines serve well as a valuable tool for the markup of rather complex historical materials designed for multiple purposes: for qualitative analyses, and as input to multivariate statistical analyses, and for migration into relational databases. Another conclusion is that such digital collections, provided with markup, could be treated as research tools themselves, because they lend themselves much more than simply access, retrieval or reading. In this prosopographical collection, the markup contributes to make explicit the underlying theories and thus provides scholars, teachers and students with tools to reuse and rearrange the content for other kinds of uses in other areas. </p>

MULTIHIERARCHICAL DOCUMENTS AND FINE-GRAINED ACCESS CONTROL

This work presents new models and algorithms for creating, modifying, and controlling access to complex text. The digitization of texts opens new opportunities for preservation, access, and analysis, but at the same time raises questions regarding how to represent and collaboratively edit such texts. Two issues of particular interest are modelling the relationships of markup (annotations) in complex texts, and controlling the creation and modification of those texts. This work addresses and connects these issues, with emphasis on data modelling, algorithms, and computational complexity; and contributes new results in these areas of research. Although hierarchical models of text and markup are common, complex texts often exhibit layers of overlapping structure that are best described by multihierarchical markup. We develop a new model of multihierarchical markup, the globally ordered GODDAG, that combines features of both graph- and range-based models of markup, allowing documents to be unambiguously serialized. We describe extensions to the XPath query language to support globally ordered GODDAGs, provide semantics for a set of update operations on this structure, and provide algorithms for converting between two different representations of the globally ordered GODDAG. Managing the collaborative editing of documents can require restricting the types of changes different editors may make, while not altogether restricting their access to the document. Fine-grained access control allows precisely these kinds of restrictions on the operations that a user is or is not permitted to perform on a document. We describe a rule-based model of fine-grained access control for updates of hierarchical documents, and in this context analyze the document generation problem: determining whether a document could have been created without violating a particular access control policy. We show that this problem is undecidable in the general case and provide computational complexity bounds for a number of restricted variants of the problem. Finally, we extend our fine-grained access control model from hierarchical to multihierarchical documents. We provide semantics for fine-grained access control policies that control splice-in, splice-out, and rename operations on globally ordered GODDAGs, and show that the multihierarchical version of the document generation problem remains undecidable.

The Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae (TLA; http://aaew.bbaw.de/tla) is the publication platform of the project „Structure and Transformation in the Vocabulary of the Egyptian Language: Texts and Knowledge in the Culture of Ancient Egypt“ (formerly known as “Altägyptisches Wörterbuch”) located in Berlin and Leipzig. It contains the largest corpus of Egyptian texts (ca. 1.4 million text words) and it is a very important tool for linguistic, philological, lexicographical, and cultural research. My paper introduces you to the software behind the TLA. I will show how easy it is to add a new text to the corpus with transcription, translation, Hieroglyphic codes, and metadata and how easy you can add any annotations of different types like rubra, citations from other texts, comments, direct speech. „… ein Gemisch von Gehörtem und selbst Zugeseztem“ / Nachschriften der ‚Kosmos-Vorträge‘ Alexander von Humboldts: Dokumentation, Kontextualisierung und exemplarische Analysen

Diese Dissertationsschrift ist angesiedelt im Bereich Digitaler Edition archivalischer Quellen, deren Erschließung und (computergestützter) Analyse. Im Zentrum stehen die sog. Kosmos-Vorträge, die Alexander von Humboldts 1827/28 in zwei Vortragszyklen in Berlin gehalten hat. Diese werden als gleichwertige, zweifache Publikationen in Humboldts Werkbiographie eingeordnet. In einem zentralen Kapitel (Kap. 7) geht es mir um eine editionstheoretische Fundierung der Edition von Vorlesungsnachschriften, zunächst allgemein und dann bezogen auf die Nachschriften der Kosmos-Vorträge. Zuvor wird das Forschungsfeld beleuchtet, da über die Rahmenbedingungen und Inhalte der beiden Vortragsreihen bislang nur wenig bekannt war. Humboldts Motivation zu diesen Vorträgen, deren Zusammenhang mit dem Kosmos (1845–62) und weiteren seiner Publikationen, sowie die jeweiligen organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen werden untersucht. Inhaltlich sind die Kosmos-Vorträge bislang wenig erforscht worden, unter anderem weil die wichtigsten Quellen nicht rezipiert wurden. Dank der Digitalisierung des Humboldt-Nachlasses und vor allem durch die Digitale Edition der Nachschriften aus dem Hörerkreis sind die Voraussetzungen dafür mittlerweile sehr viel besser. Um die künftige Arbeit mit diesen Dokumenten zu unterstützen, dokumentiere und reflektiere ich in Kapitel 8 die praktische Umsetzung des Editionsmodells gemäß den Richtlinien der Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Anschließend stelle ich die edierten Nachschriften aus beiden Vortragszyklen vor und zeige, wie sich mit den digitalen Volltexten arbeiten lässt. Dabei kommen quantitative Untersuchungen und Verfahren wie automatische Kollation bzw. Plagiatssuche, aber auch ‚traditionell hermeneutische‘ Methoden zum Einsatz. Schließlich geht es mir in meiner Arbeit darum, die Grundlage für die weitere Erforschung der beiden Vortragsreihen wesentlich zu verbessern und anhand einiger exemplarischer Analysen erste Schritte in diese Richtung zu unternehmen. / This dissertation is located in the field of digital editions of archival sources, their exploration and (computer-assisted) analysis. In terms of content, it deals with the so-called Kosmos-Lectures, which Alexander von Humboldt held in two distinct courses in Berlin in the winter of 1827/28. The two series are recognised as two distinct publications of equal value in Humboldt’s oeuvre. In a central chapter (chapter 7), I am concerned with an edition-theoretical foundation for the edition of attendee’s notebooks, first in general and then in relation to the transcripts of the Kosmos-Lectures. Before this, the research field of the long-neglected Kosmos-Lectures is illuminated, as little has been known about the framework conditions of the lecture series. Humboldt’s motivation for these lectures, their connection with the Kosmos (1845–62) and other of his publications, and the respective organisational framework of the courses are being examined. In terms of content, the Kosmos-Lectures have so far been little researched, partly because the most important sources have not been taken into consideration. The conditions for this are now much better thanks to the digitisation of the Humboldt legacy collection and, above all, the digital edition of the transcripts from the audience. To facilitate future work with these documents, I document and reflect the practical implementation of the edition model according to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) in chapter 8. In the following two chapters, I present the attendee’s notebooks from both courses, and show how to work with these digital full texts. Quantitative investigations and methods such as automatic collation or text re-use detection, but also ‘traditional hermeneutic’ approaches are used. Ultimately, my work aims to significantly improve the basis for research into the two lecture series, which has so far been lacking, and to take the first steps in this direction by means of some exemplary analyses.

A practical approach to the standardisation and elaboration of Zulu as a technical language

The lack of terminology in Zulu can be overcome if it is developed to meet international scientific and technical demands. This lack of terminology can be traced back to the absence of proper language policy implementation with regard to the African languages. Even though Zulu possesses the basic elements that are necessary for its development, such as orthographical standards, dictionaries, grammars and published literature, a number of problems exist within the technical elaboration and standardisation processes: * Inconsistencies in the application of standard rules, in relation to both orthography and terminology. * The lack of standardisation of the (technical) word-formation patterns in Zulu. (Generally the role of culture in elaboration has largely been overlooked). * The avoidance of exploiting written technical text corpora as a resource for terminology. (Text encoding by means of corpus query tools in term extraction has just begun in Zulu and needs to be properly exemplified). * The avoidance of introducing oral technical corpora as a resource for improving the acceptability of technical terminology by, for instance, designing a type of reusable corpus annotation. This study contributes towards solving these problems by offering a practical approach within the context of the real written, standard and oral Zulu language, mainly within the medical terminological domain. This approach offers a reusable methodological foundation with proper language exemplification that can guide terminologists in terminological research, or to some extent even train them, to achieve effective technical elaboration and eventual standardisation. This thesis aims at attaining consistent standardisation on the orthographical level in order to ease the elaboration task of the terminologist. It also aims at standardising the methods of word- (term-) formation linking them to cultural factors, such as taboo. However, this thesis also emphasises the significance of using written and oral technical corpora as terminology resource. This, for instance, is made possible through the application of corpus linguistics, in semi-automatic term extraction from a written technical corpus to aid lemmatisation (listing entries) and in corpus annotation to improve the acceptability of terminology, based on the comparison of standard terms with oral terms. / Linguistics / D.
