: En text- och bildanalys av två läseböcker i ämnet svenska ur ett genusperspektiv för årskurs 3 / Active boys and passive girls or vice versa? : A text and image analysis of two textbooks in the subject of Swedish from a gender perspective for third grade students in schoolGiraldo Gómez, Natalia January 2016 (has links)
Since 1991 government control of textbooks no longer takes place and the pedagogical framing is influenced by production relations in a rectified global mass culture where impressions and role models from the media have greater influence on students’ worldview and their socialization. Norms, ideas, values and attitudes are conveyed through language which is therefore seen as central in the creation of ideas about what is considered male or female. The purpose of the study is to examine, from a gender perspective, how girls/women and boys/men are portrayed and represented in both text and image in two textbooks in the subject of Swedish for kids in the third grade. Furthermore, the study aims to investigate the type of professions and/or activities occurring as masculine and feminine. The theories used for the analysis of the material are Yvonne Hirdman’s gender theory, Raewyn Connell's conception of gender relations and Bronwyn Davies sociological theory. The questions that are answered in the study are the following: * In what way is gender constructed in the representation of girls/women and boys/men by image and text in textbooks? * Which professions and/or activities are linked to masculinity and femininity? I have in my investigation concluded that boys/men and girls/women are represented differently in both textbooks. In the textbook ”LäsDax 3” I found that both genders are represented in a stereotypical way, while the other textbook “ABC-klubben, Nyckeln till skatten” is trying to move beyond the stereotypical representation. In the latter mentioned textbook, men and women are both allowed to exceed the prevailing genus contract of society by describing girls as active and men as emotional. Regarding professions and/or activities I could also find that they differ in the textbooks. ”LäsDax 3” follows the norms of society regarding what is seen as masculine or feminine, while “ABC-klubben, Nyckeln till skatten” exceeds society’s norms.

The Japanese History Textbook Controversy Amid Post-War Sino-Japanese RelationsRomeu, Maria Gabriela 27 March 2013 (has links)
The relations between China and Japan are strained and continue to foster negative emotions partly because of China’s grievances about Japan’s actions during World War II and the allegedly false historiographical accounts found in Japanese history textbooks. This study will utilize historical analysis of the events leading up to the Nanjing Massacre in December of 1937, examine the Japanese Ministry of Education’s (MEXT) critical and contentious role in the selection of textbooks, used for primary and secondary schools, and will also juxtapose the controversial 2001 Atarashii rekishi kyōkasho with current Japanese history textbooks. The study will also include a syntactical analysis of key terms through my own original translations of multiple Japanese history textbooks, which are currently used in the Japanese school curriculum, to reveal that the textbook publishers, MEXT, and regulation councils are involved in adjusting the content causing the information to reveal various degrees of whitewashing.

Previous issue date: 2015-06-17 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / This research aimed to identify and analyze the space that occupies indigenous issues in teaching history in the face of changes and / or stays caused by Law 11,645 / 2008 institution. Such writing was produced in order to raise and broaden the discussion of the silenced and marginalized history of indigenous peoples of Brazil. The research presents a qualitative approach to documentary character, which we use as the main document analysis texts and images contained in the textbook collections History Society & Citizenship and History of the Third Millennium Caves approved by PNLD 2008 and 2011 and intended for Primary Education II (6 th to 9 th year). Given that textbooks are important tools in the consolidation and spread of representations. The analysis of the sources allowed us to discuss about the privileged approaches and despised in the history of Brazil present in textbooks, as well as see that the representation of indigenous peoples in textbooks of history yet has undergone positive changes, but it is necessary that the results advances in academic research and historiography can reach the readership of textbooks.

Elementos do ensino superior : o livro didático, a biblioteca e a química geral teóricaVassão, Carolina Fauth January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation proposed to investigate the didactic book in Higher Education, through the tripod students-library-teachers. The general objective of this work was to investigate the contribution of university textbooks in the professional training of students of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering at UFRGS, attending to General Theoretical Chemistry. In order to reach the objective, the specific interests of the research were the students' vision, the conception of the teaching professors of the discipline, and the reflexes on the use of the library of the Institute of Chemistry. All these interests were based on the list of books cited, that is, the bibliography recommended in the discipline's teaching plan. The research adopted the mixed method (qualitative-quantitative) and used three types of data collection throughout the work: 1) statistical data collection of the circulation of books in the library; 2) a questionnaire with open and closed questions addressed to students; 3) interview with teachers. After this step, the information were analysed and described in three articles, where each presents the results according to the type of method chosen. The results of the quantitative descriptive analysis indicate that in the Library the most borrowed books are those listed in the categories of essential and basic bibliography, especially Peter Atkins' Principles of Chemistry. In the qualitative approach, the descriptive results derived from the students' responses to the questionnaire suggest that they prefer books with accessible textual language and good quality images, as well as effectively using the books recommended as support for their studies. The intervention with the teachers resulted in a detailed text based on Discursive Textual Analysis, as proposed by the authors Moraes and Galiazzi. Emerging statements and categories established the positive conception of teachers regarding the use and indication of recommended books to students. At the end, it is possible to conclude that the university textbooks are useful to their purpose, help in the understanding of the content developed in the classroom, and have their access facilitated via University Library.

Skol-orientalism : En religionsdidaktisk analys av hur läromedel framställer islamDostal, Jan-Roman January 2021 (has links)
This is a study that with critical eyes, studies schoolbooks that are meant for upper secondary school in the curriculum – Religion. I am studying how schoolbook authors portray Islam and its practitioners. Is there possibly any tendency towards orientalism to be found in them? Hopefully, none or very little. There are earlier studies that show how Muslims are portrayed as “the other”, the lesser, while Christians are portrayed as “we”, the normal. To be able to do this study I am using qualitative content analysis as a method. That way it is possible to systematically work through a larger text and cut it down to smaller themes. How are the authors portraying God? How is Islam´s view of man presented versus the Christian view of man? Finally, in what way has the representation of Islam changed over time?By using Edward Said’s theory of orientalism, I have been able to get the following result. It shows that the presentation of Islam and Christianity is still othering Islam and its practitioners, but differs on how easy you as a reader can see it. By using the theory of religious literacy, I have been able to identify how the author uses his/her language, if the author thought of conveying a deeper explanation and not just focus on small factual parts.

Vocabulary in English Textbooks for Swedish Secondary School : A Study about the Frequency of Vocabulary in Textbook Wordlists and the Selected Vocabulary ExercisesTanriverdi, Taner January 2020 (has links)
This study examines the level of frequency of wordlists, and the selected vocabulary exercise type in two English textbooks aimed at first year (English 5) and third year (English 7) Swedish secondary school students. A quantitative analysis was conducted by inserting the wordlists into an online tool, which generated a frequency list based on lemmas in accordance with the BNC corpus. The analysis of the wordlist indicates a majority of low frequency lemmas and a minority of high frequency lemmas, which studies report that students are not familiar with. The results of the frequency analysis support findings of previously conducted studies regarding insufficient number of high frequency words in EFL textbooks. Vocabulary exercise types were also identified, counted and analysed. The analysis of the vocabulary exercise types indicates a preference for production exercises in the textbook aimed at English 5, and a preference of interpretation exercises in the English 7 textbook. The effectiveness of commonly found exercise types in the textbooks are supported by previous research.

Developing An Evaluation Checklist for Identity in ESOL TextbooksJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: Language Textbooks often play a major role in English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) classrooms, not only to provide information but also to help students construct their identities. Several studies showed that identity and language learning are inseparable, due to the simple fact that every learner has his/her own identity aspects like race, gender, social class, and speaker status (i.e., native speaker vs. non-native speaker of the target language). These aspects should be acknowledged because providing the students with limited identity options might cause the students to resist learning the language or be less invested in this practice (Norton & Toohey,2011).
However, there is limited support for teachers who wish to examine identity in ESOL textbooks. Several scholars attempted to evaluate the range of identity options offered in ESOL textbooks, but they all used either Critical Discourse Analysis or Content Analysis which can be effective; however, these procedures require training and can take a long time, so they may not be practical for teachers. This suggests that there is a need for a less complicated evaluation tool that can be easily used by teachers.
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a teacher-friendly identity-focused checklist for ESOL textbooks, and the thesis is guided by the following questions: (a) what would an evaluation checklist for identity in ESOL textbooks look like?; (b) what can this checklist reveal about ESOL textbooks? The purpose of this thesis was achieved by developing a qualitative checklist that covers, race, gender, social class, and speaker status, and demonstrating how to use it on a collection of five adult ESOL textbooks. The checklist revealed similarities and differences between the textbooks, including important shortcomings, and that kind of information can be useful for the teacher to make decisions about the textbook he/she uses. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Applied Linguistics 2019
