Among these processes, emphasis will be placed on the aesthetics of the grotesque and the spectacular, present both in his printed works and in the language used in its inner workings. The text corpus researched here covers the following sample of short stories by Fonseca: Livro de ocorrências, Corações solitários, Relato de ocorrência, Dia dos namorados, Duzentos e vinte e cinco gramas, Nau Catrineta and A arte de andar nas ruas do Rio de Janeiro. This text corpus was published between 1963 and 1992. It was selected due to the fact that its production provides a kind of narrative of the consolidation of mass communications media in our country. The main theoretical references on which our research is based include Mikhail Bakhtin, Wolfgang Kayser and Muniz Sodré, notable scholars of the grotesque; Guy Debord, a scholar of the society of the spectacle; Patrick Charaudeau, who describes and analyzes media discourse and is staging and expression strategies; Rildo Cosson, a scholar of hybrid texts, above all those that involve Brazilian journalism; David le Breton, who studies contemproary culture from the perspective of the body; and Zygmunt Bauman, for insight into human coexistence in the urban space. Our methodological procedure consists of allusive bibliographical research on the state of the art in studies and Brazilian media. The primary result is intended to be an observation of the potential for exchange between the spheres of literature and more popular media forms. We also intend to contribute to research that tries to comprehend the processes of literary creation from an inter-semiotic perspective / O objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar os procedimentos do discurso midiático presentes na obra de Rubem Fonseca.

Azevedo, Patrícia Aparecida de 26 May 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-15T19:46:50Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Patricia Azevedo.pdf: 641329 bytes, checksum: 2516084aa7af7b09ac799026ef9c585a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-05-26 / This dissertation aims at presenting an interpretative analysis of female characters in Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, by Machado de Assis, by examining the theoretical perspectives of those characters and of the grotesque images especially focusing Virgília and Eugênia establishing a paradigm with the remaining female characters in the novel. In order to weave Machado de Assis diversity while composing these characters, we present the subsidies pertaining not only to character composition, but also to the grotesque per se. This can be found in the first chapter of this dissertation. To discuss the grotesque and the characters in literature, we used theories such as those presented by Foster, Bakhtin, Rosenfeld, Antonio Candido and Kayser, among other authors. Our assumption is that the female characters in Machado de Assis are strong-minded. Some are always in the command of the situations that they live; others, though presenting less selfexpression, also make a stand wherever they go. Virgília and Eugênia, the female characters studied here, as well as others in Machado de Assis s work and here analyzed are not the main characters in the plot, but to such extent are they strongly portrayed in the novel, that they stand out even more than Brás Cubas himself. This occurs due to their behavior, their social position and the extent of the decision they make under the conditions they are forced to face. The analysis carried out here shows that Machado is the first author to innovate in the composition of female characters, especially in terms of autonomy provision. For this reason, though written in the late nineteenth century, the novel investigated passionately surprises its reader at every new perusal.

Weird Fiction: An Exhibition of Paintings

Jahnke, Heidi January 2011 (has links)
Each painting in this exhibition is a transformed documentation of a specific experience culled from my daily, ordinary life. These encounters are not monumental; however their impact is significant because of their disturbing, disgusting, puzzling and humourously entertaining qualities. The awkwardness and resulting ambiguity of my imagery is defined through connections to the uncanny, the surreal, the grotesque and the literary genre of tragicomedy. The work also acknowledges a strong relationship to historic traditions within painting and aspires to use comedy to provide an opportunity for viewers to retrieve and recreate a moment of personal history.

A Carnivalesque Perspective of Graham Swift's Last Orders

Willis, Catherine Jane 07 January 2009 (has links)
Graham Swifts novel Last Orders has yet to be viewed as containing carnivalesque elements as defined by Mikhail Bakhtin in Rabelais and His World. Through the examination of Bakhtins theory of the carnivalesque and through a corresponding close reading of Last Orders, this article details the carnivalesque nature of the locations visited by the characters in the narrative, of the grotesque incidents that occur in these locations, and of the narrative style and structure of the novel itself.

Ryšys tarp katalikiškų, grotesko ir pietų aspektų Flannery O'Connor trumpose istorijose / The relationship or Catholic, Grotesque and Southern Aspects in Flannery O'Connor Short Stories

Binkevičienė, Jolanta 01 June 2005 (has links)
This work attemptes to disclose the aspects of Catholicism, Grotesque and Southernism in Flannery O’Connor’s short stories. It proves that the author used the three aspects in order to reveal the core of Southern society through the looking-glass of Catholicism for that purpose that employing grotesque characters and situations, which also provided the tools for a critique. Catholic, grotesque and southern aspects, although sometimes in disguise, are the subject freely canvassed in Flannery O'Connor's fiction because she was in the position to see things in a way that was denied to many others. She was a devout Catholic all her life; she possessed a gift for writing coupled with emotional maturity; and overriding all, she had both vision and humility. She was also born and raised in the American South (Georgia) and lived most of her adult life there. Consequently, as a fiction writer, O'Connor was furnished with the unique opportunity to both observe and record the Protestant South with its Calvinist backdrop, through the lens of her Catholic faith. The stories O'Connor wrote are a valuable testament to a region that she once described as "no longer Christ centred but still Christ haunted". (62, 527) She saw the South as a region where most people were merely grotesque in the way they lived, thought and acted lacking a central authority that unified faith, morals and liturgical practice, but with definite empathy, she saw those same people attempting to wrestle in various and... Le Corps grotesque dans «Les Cent Contes drolatiques» d'Honoré de Balzac

Charette, Caroline 08 1900 (has links)
Honoré de Balzac is mostly acknowledged, today, as the father of the novel and as the writer of La Comédie humaine. But we often forget that between 1830 and 1832, at the beginning of his career, the author wrote, mainly and like many writers of his time, short stories. Multiple factors can explain that interest, for example, Hoffman’s Contes fantastiques had been translated from German to French and their success was immediate. Moreover, the new mediums of literary publication, in magazines and newspapers, favoured the proliferation of the genre. One corpus will keep our attention through these pages: Les Cent Contes drolatiques, a project, unpopular in his time, with which Balzac aimed to « restaurer l’école du rire » in France. In the middle of the nineteenth century, the author recreated short stories like the ones that Rabelais, Verville and the reine de Navarre have written in their time, three or four centuries before. To do so, Balzac invented a language that simulated the old French and created grotesque characters. What is, in Honoré de Balzac’s work, the aesthetic of laugh, and how does the author express that concept in his Cent Contes drolatiques? To answer these questions, we will study the manifestations of the grotesque in the entire production of the writer. Also, according to Mikhaïl Bakhtine, in L’Œuvre de François Rabelais et la culture populaire au Moyen Âge et sous la Renaissance , the grotesque, linked to laugh, is related to the body : « Le trait marquant du réalisme grotesque est le rabaissement, c’est-à-dire le transfert de tout ce qui est élevé, spirituel, idéal et abstrait sur le plan matériel et corporel. » Consequently, it is the representations of the body that, in a further reflection, we will examine. Finally, the study of the grotesque body in Les Cent Contes drolatiques will show another facet of Balzac’s writing, often ignored by researchers : the importance of laughter and the vision of the world that it communicates through literature.

Trauma and the psychological grotesque in the novels of Laura Hendrie, Laura Kasischke, and Gloria Naylor

Bliss, Adrienne L. January 2005 (has links)
This research uses the interpretive framework of the Psychological Grotesque to address a protagonist's response when she is unable to integrate the experience of interpersonal trauma into her psyche. The framework reveals a survival mechanism, identity incorporation, with roots in the transgressive and evolutionary nature of the grotesque as discussed in the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, Mary Douglas and Leonard Cassuto. The psychological grotesque is explicated using Stvgo by Laura Hendrie, The Life Before Her Eyes, by Laura Kasischke, and Linden Hills by Gloria Naylor. The psychological grotesque reveals how the protagonist within each of these novels, when positioned within a specific matrix of contributing factors engages in flawed survival strategies to reconcile psychic fragmentation. Drawing on theories of trauma from the work of Bessel Van Der Kolk, Dori Laub, Sigmund Freud, Mardi Horowitz, Ronnie Janoff-Bulman, Laurie Vickroy, Cathy Caruth, Peter Woods and Tim Middleton, the definition of the matrix includes: interpersonal trauma, prior history of emotional problems, no social support network, and self-perceived complicity in the violence. Where these criteria are present, the protagonist is incapable of achieving the repair of her damaged psyche in order to reintegrate into society and relief from the pain of trauma. In an effort to repair her brokeness through the incorporation of parts of the identity of others, the protagonist creates a grotesque mental hybrid living in fractured time. The protagonist experiences destabilization of time due to incorporating the temporal perspective of the other identities. A flawed survival strategy, identity incorporation leads to further psychic fragmentation. The psychological grotesque takes up the challenge of communicating the effects of trauma and addresses the lack of a literary interpretive mechanism for trauma literature in which a critical component of the narrative is the story of female victims of interpersonal violence. This framework confronts the fact that representations of women and trauma are problematic due to how trauma resists linguistic representation and because women have historically been denied a voice in the canon. Therefore, by drawing on elements of the grotesque, specifically hybridity and transgression, this interpretive framework recuperates the experiences of traumatized protagonists. / Department of English

Sátira e crítica social no romance Os tambores silenciosos, de Josué Guimarães / Satire and social criticism in the novel Os Tambores Silenciosos, by Josué Guimarães

Seckler, Katia Luisa 09 March 2009 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation examines the novel Os tambores silenciosos (1977), by Josué Guimarães, and attemps to verify how the elements of the grotesque, the satire and carnivalization are used to construct the characters and the plot with the purpose of a critical representation of two critical historical periods corresponding with each other: the 1930 s and the contemporary construction of the text - the 1970 s. The censorship, the authoritarianism and the political repression are common to both periods. These aspects are dramatized in Os tambores silenciosos, which employs satirical elements and the construction of unusual situations that represent military and their arbitrary attitudes, flattering and weak politicians and violent policemen, denouncing the arbitrariness of a dictatorial regime. This work aims to highlight the grotesque, the carnivalization and the menippean satire, based on the Mikhail Bakhtin s theoretical formulations, in order to understand adequately the relations suggested by the presence of comic and unusual events in the novel under consideration.
