Searching for a charged Higgs boson and development of a hardware track trigger with the ATLAS experiment

Gradin, Joakim January 2017 (has links)
This thesis describes searches for a heavy charged Higgs boson decaying into a top and bottom quark pair, and the development of a hardware track trigger with theATLAS experiment. The data for the two searches was collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider(LHC) with pp collision energies of √s = 8 and 13 TeV, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 and 13.2 fb-1 respectively. The main background for this signal is the production of tt̄ pairs with additional heavy flavor radiation. The searches with a single lepton in the final state found no evidence of a charged Higgs boson, and set 95% CLS upper limits on the production times branching ratio for masses ranging between 200-1000 GeV. The preparation of using the final state with two leptons in future searches is discussed. The design of a hardware track trigger based on pattern matching and linear track fitting was studied for the purpose of reducing the high event rates of the High-Luminosity LHC, which is expected to provide pp collisions with a luminosity about five times the nominal value, in the second half of the 2020’s. A simulation framework was developed to emulate the pattern matching and was used to test its ability to filter hits in high pile-up environments. The results of this simulation, together with simulations of the track fitting and latency, show that such a track trigger is a viable option for the ATLAS experiment in the High Luminosity-LHC era.

Search for the Higgs boson in the WH->lvbb channel with the ATLAS detector : development of high performance b-jet identification algorithm

Mochizuki, Kazuya 27 October 2015 (has links)
In July 2012, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations announced the discovery of a new particle at a mass of about 125 GeV, compatible with the Higgs boson predicted by the Standard Model (SM) ofparticle physics. Although all measurements as of Summer 2015 show a full consistency with the SM predictions, the H->bb decay channel has not been seen yet as clearly as the other decay channels. This thesis presents a search for the Higgs boson in the WH->lvbb channel, using proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV taken with the ATLAS detector in the year 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1. This document details in particular one of the contributions made by the author in this search: the additional analysis region with muon events triggered by missing transverse momentum. An excess over the background-only hypothesis has been found with a significance of 1.8 sigma while 1.5 sigma was expected. The observed (expected) upper limit on the cross-section times branching ratio for WH->lvbb at 95% confidence level is found to be 2.35 (1.37) times the SM prediction at mH = 125 GeV. This search highly relies on the identification of jets originating in b-quark fragmentation, so-called b-tagging. In order to improve the H->bb search and other physics analyses using b-tagging in ATLAS, the development of high performance b-tagging algorithms has been performed and is presented also in this thesis. A new b-tagging algorithm, called MV2, is introduced: it improves the b-tagging performance significantly and is now the baseline b-tagging algorithm in ATLAS for the Run-2 analyses.

Mesure des propriétés du boson de Higgs avec l'expérience ATLAS au LHC / Measurement of the Higgs boson properties with ATLAS experiment at the LHC

Delgove, David 05 October 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, I show my contribution to the study of the properties of the Higgs boson. My work has consisted in combining the different searches of the Standard Model Higgs boson to measure the rate of production, decay and the couplings. For example, the overall rate of production measured with the ATLAS dectector has been measured. These measurements can also be interpreted in the constext of models beyond the standard model such that composite models or models inspired from the MSSM (hMSSM). I have also participated to the studies of the performance of a particle flow algorithm to reconstruct the jet with a large radius. My contribution to the search of a pseudoscalar Higgs boson decaying into a Z boson and a Higgs boson and the search of the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson and decaying into a pair of b quarks are also shown.

Zkoumání vlastností Higgsova bosonu v experimentu ATLAS / Zkoumání vlastností Higgsova bosonu v experimentu ATLAS

Mlynáriková, Michaela January 2014 (has links)
The Standard Model of elementary particles (SM) predicts the existence of a neutral scalar Higgs boson. However, there are also extensions of the SM (such as the MSSM) in which a number of Higgs bosons is predicted. Especially the additional presence of pseudoscalar and charged Higgs bosons represents one of the crucial differences between the SM and its exten- sions. This work develops a method for determination of the spin and parity of the Higgs boson in several H → ττ decays, namely: H→ τ+ τ− → (h+ ντ )(h− ¯ντ ), H→ τ+ τ− → ( + ντ ¯ν )(π− ¯ντ ) and H→ τ+ τ− → ( + ντ ¯ν )( − ¯ντ ν ), where h denotes π or ρ meson. The method is based on the angular and energy correlations of charged final products from the decays mentioned above. Additionally, the work studies the possibility of signal (Higgs boson decay) and background (Z → ττ decay) discrimination, when one considers a decaying boson with spin 1. All calcula- tions are done in the leading order of perturbation theory. 1

Cross-section measurements of the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of tau leptons with the ATLAS detector / Cross-section measurements of the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of tau leptons with the ATLAS detector

Mlynáriková, Michaela January 2019 (has links)
The ATLAS experiment is one of the two general-purpose detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. ATLAS is designed for precision mea- surements of particle properties, the search of the Higgs boson and new physics beyond the Standard Model. The experiment got worldwide atten- tion in 2012, when after the collaborative efforts with the CMS experiment the Higgs boson discovery was announced. After the discovery, the preci- sion measurements of its properties became one of the main objectives of the LHC physics programme, since a potential observation of deviations from the Standard Model predictions might lead to the discovery of new physics. In this thesis, the measurements of the Higgs boson production cross-sections in the H → ττ decay channel are presented. Based on the proton-proton collision data collected at the centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in years 2015 and 2016, the signal over the expected background from the other Standard Model processes is established with the observed significance of 4.4σ. Com- bined with the data collected at 7 and 8 TeV, the observed signal significance amounts to 6.4σ, which constitutes a single experiment observation of the H → ττ decays by ATLAS. All presented results are found to be consistent with...

Measurements of the Higgs boson properties through its decay to four leptons in the CMS detector with 13 TeV pp collisions at LHC / Mesure des propriétés du boson de Higgs via ses désintégrations en 4 leptons dans le détecteur CMS dans les collisions pp à 13 TeV au LHC

Šćulac, Toni 05 December 2018 (has links)
This thesis reports on measurements of Higgs boson properties in the four-lepton channel in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector. Significant improvements in many aspects of the analysis are introduced. My contribution is twofold, improving the electron selection efficiency measurements and leading the analysis of data recorded in 2017 as the main author. Results of the analysis of Run II data are presented for two data sets recorded in 2016 and 2017, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 35.9 fb−1 and 41.5 fb−1, respectively. The signal strength modifiers relative to the standard model prediction, the mass and decay width of the boson, differential and inclusive cross sections are measured. All results are in good agreement with standard model expectations for a 125 GeV Higgs boson within the uncertainties. Finally, a measurement of the signal strength modifiers on combined 77.4 fb−1 of data collected in 2016 and 2017 is also performed and is again found to be compatible with the SM predictions. New frontiers are reached as the statistical and systematical contributions to the total uncertainty on the inclusive signal strength measurement are found to be of the similar size.

Identifying the Higgs Boson with Machine Learning Methods / Identifiering av Higgsbosonen med maskininlärningsmetoder

Frisk, Filip January 2024 (has links)
This report introduces a signal discrimination framework for particle physics processes, including a novel ensemble learning method using multiple machine learning models. The framework is tested with a signal region of the Higgs boson decay channel H → WW∗ → lνlν with two or more jets. The final state consists of leptons with the same flavor but opposite electrical charges, and the Higgs bosons are produced by Vector-boson fusion (VBF). The background region consists of the three largest processes with the same final state without originating from the signal process. Multiple models are trained and evaluated on Monte Carlo samples corresponding to a subset of the full Run 2 dataset of proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The analysis in this report shows that ensemble methods improve background rejection leading to increased discrimination between the signal and background region compared with individual machine learning models.
